A Salina man was pronounced dead at Salina Regional Health Center after allegedly 'shooting himself.'

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) this morning (Thursday, June 26th), officers responded to the Salina Regional Health Center Emergency Room regarding a male that shot himself. It was reported that an 87-year old Salina man walked into the ER and made 'contact with ER personnel.'

Police stated that once the man checked in, he 'produced a handgun and shot himself while in the waiting room.'&nbsp;

There were no reports of anyone who was present in the waiting room or anyone getting hurt.

According to SPD immediate life-saving measures were performed, but the man was pronounced deceased just after 8:00 am this morning.

At approximately 7:08 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, Salina Regional Health Center activated its active shooter protocol in response to an incident in the emergency room.

No patients or staff were harmed during this incident.

The Emergency Room is still accepting patients, however, they will be rerouted to another area of the hospital. The hospital is cooperating with law enforcement in this ongoing investigation.

As always, the safety and well-being of our patients, staff and visitors remain our highest priority.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” said Joel Phelps, President and CEO. “Our thoughts are with all those affected and we are committed to supporting our staff and patients during this time. We are thankful that the SRHC team and patients were unharmed.”

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

Plans available to help Kansans unable to pay for phone, internet services stay connected

ABILENE - A street named after the hometown of the 34th President of the United States was approved to be established in the state of Virginia during a city council meeting.

On Monday, June 23rd during a city council meeting in Alexandria, VA council members proposed a new street named 'Abilene Street' after former U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower's hometown. According to the City of Alexandria, 'Abilene Street' would run perpendicular to 'Eisenhower Avenue' in Alexandria.

During the meeting, a vote of 6-1 was motioned to approve 'Abilene Street.'

Eisenhower served as President of the U.S. for two terms from January 20th, 1953 - January 20th, 1961.

Eisenhower was born on&nbsp;October 14th, 1890 and passed away on&nbsp;March 28th, 1969.

ABILENE - The Abilene Police Department (APD) are seeking tips to identify a female suspect who allegedly is in connection to a 'theft investigation.'

The Abilene Police Department sent a post on their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1LEZNHzUea/">Facebook page</a>&nbsp;to inform the public about a female suspect that is allegedly tied to a theft investigation. Surveillance footage shows the identification of the female, but without a name and age.

APD advises anyone who may recognize the female is asked to contact them at (785) 263-1212 or the Dickinson County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-5DK-TIPS.

Abilene Police seeking tips for female suspect in connection to a theft

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Wednesday, June 25th at around 6:30 am the SPD SWAT team with the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) SWAT team, conducted a search warrant in the&nbsp;900 block of Spruce.

SPD stated that the search warrant was in connection to the <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/99edc0c9-1c4b-4d48-92a7-4322e16d6e55">ongoing shooting that occurred in the parking lot of Pancho's </a>(3029 Riffel) on June 8th, 2025.

Throughout the search warrant, SWAT team authorities arrested 32-year old, Calvin Frenzley Jr. and 30-year old, Sydney Holt. Both live at the residence. 

Frenzley Jr. was initially arrested for a requested charge of Aggravated Assault, regarding the shooting at the <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/99edc0c9-1c4b-4d48-92a7-4322e16d6e55">Pancho's parking lot</a>.

Both Frenzly Jr. and Holt are facing the following requested charges:

Felony Interference, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, and Aggravated Endangerment of a Child since there was a child under the age of 18 at the residence. 

The investigation is currently ongoing and SPD states that additional arrests are anticipated.

A nationwide federally funded educational program that helps high school students learn more about themselves as they prepare for college, was invited for a 'personality workshop' at the campus of KSU Salina this past Tuesday.

Upward Bound, part of the 'TRIO' programs by the U.S. Department of Education was invited to be apart of a workshop that helps high school students&nbsp;(incoming 9-12th graders) learn about what personality/temperament type they align towards. Volunteer, Kay Quinn was the leading advocate in making the workshop possible.&nbsp;

Before the workshop came into fruition, Quinn read the book "Personality Plus" by Florence Littauer and presented it to Upward Bound Academic Services Coordinator for KSU Salina, Brandi Smith. Smith enjoyed the material and collaborated ideas with Quinn to start a workshop that would help students improve on their soft skills.

In order to make the workshop possible, at least 2 other volunteers had to be on board along with Quinn, Smith and Director&nbsp;of Upward Bound for KSU Salina Monshonda Booker. Prior to the workshop, each participant/volunteer had to fill out a&nbsp;one-page personality quiz. This would help identify a temperament/personality type each volunteer was keen towards. The volunteers were also known as 'actors,' as they would portray the specific temperament/personality type during the workshop for the students.&nbsp;

When the workshop took place Booker, Smith and volunteers (Quinn, Jacob Brown and Gary Demuth) came together to make it a 'success.'

"The workshop was a huge success and the kids were really engaged," said Smith. "They (students) were really excited to see what personality types they and their friends were."

Students in the workshop filled out the same quiz as the volunteers and were divided in groups evenly depending on the type of temperament/personality that would fit with their assigned 'actor.'&nbsp;

The personality types included; 'Popular Sanguine Personality,' 'Perfect Melancholy Personality,' 'Powerful Choleric Personality' and 'Peaceful Phlegmatic Personality.'

“The students seemed interested and engaged," said Quinn. "It is always exciting to see students learn more about themselves."

Smith commented on how this workshop was 'one of the best workshops that Upward Bound has probably ever had.'

"Our goal for this workshop was to help our students discover and appreciate each other's temperament," said Booker. "The workshop was engaging and our students demonstrated thoughtful reflections, as they learned to harness their strengths and navigate challenges when collaborating with temperaments."

Booker also commented on some of the key takeaways Upward Bound took from the workshop.

"By blending students with different temperaments and assigning balanced roles, we fostered this workshop that would mirror real-world dynamics," said Booker. "This environment encouraged respect of individual differences and cultivated essential skills like collaborations, empathy and effective communication. Through meaningful team-building activities our students experienced first-hand, how understanding and embracing personality differences can lead to personal growth and stronger group cohesion."&nbsp;

Smith and Booker were representing the Upward Bound program that oversees 4 target school areas, through a grant that includes; Ell-Saline, Clay Center, Lincoln and Newton.

Upward Bound helps incoming 9-12th graders navigate high school, as they prepare them for the college level. Once students have graduate high school, Upward Bound tracks their students for 6 more years on their performance, as they navigate through the college scene.

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 26

SALINE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 10p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by Jagjeevan Singh, 27, Flora Park, New York, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Ohio Street. The vehicle crossed the left lane, traveled off the roadway, struck the south guard rail,&nbsp; left the roadway on the right side, struck the north guard rail, rolled onto its side and came to rest blocking westbound traffic on the interstate.

&nbsp;Singh was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp;Carlson Gesiendorf Funeral Home. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Winter wheat condition rated 9% very poor, 14% poor, 32% fair, 40% good, and 5% excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 97%, near 100% last year and 94% for the five-year average. LINCOLN COUNTY - The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a bridge replacement on K-18 in Lincoln County on Monday, June 30.

The replacement is necessary as the bridge has reached the end of its life expectancy. The new box bridge will be double the length with improved roadside slopes and serve the traveling public for years to come.

The bridge is located about 6.5 miles east of the city of Lincoln on K-18, just east of Beverly.

During construction, temporary traffic signals will direct one lane of traffic through the work zone at a reduced speed.

Klaver Construction Company Inc., of Wichita, is the prime contractor for this $1.1 million project, which is estimated to be completed in early November, weather permitting.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones.

Bridge replacement to begin June 30 on K-18 in Lincoln County

Saline County deputies are currently searching for a male who allegedly ran away from an arrest.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, June 24th at 9:30 am deputies were sent to CKF Addiction Treatment on 617 E. Elm St., in connection to a male 'court ordered patient' who allegedly was not 'following rules' with CKF.

Whenever deputies arrived, the male patient identified as 36-year old Levi Sanderson allegedly ran away and was not apprehended.

Sanderson before CKF, had a warrant for theft and damage to property back in 2023. Moreover, Sanderson had requested charges for trespassing and probation violation in which he was booked into the Saline County Jail on April 4th, 2025.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Sanderson was court ordered to be transported to CKF on June 3rd, 2025 and deputies took him to CKF on June, 5th.

Sanderson was last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.

Saline County Operations Captain Jim Hughes, advises residents to not apprehend or take any law enforcement action on Sanderson if he is discovered, but to call 9-1-1.

WICHITA, Kan. (June 25, 2025)—Kala’i Rosario hit for the cycle in a 10-1 Wichita Wind Surge win over the Springfield Cardinals at Equity Bank Park.&nbsp;

John Klein struck out a season-high nine hitters over five innings with two hits, an earned run, and a walk finishing out his line. He improved to 5-4 on the year with the win, while Ricky Castro earned his second save after throwing for the final three innings with just two walks given up besides three strikeouts.&nbsp;

Rosario smoked a ground ball double the other way to right center to bring in Gabby Gonzalez for a 1-0 Wind Surge lead in the bottom of the first. Jorel Ortega gave Wichita another run on a sacrifice fly to right field in the home half of the second.&nbsp;

JJ Wetherholt grounded an RBI single to right center in the top of the third to make the score 2-1 Wichita, then Kala’i Rosario roped a solo shot off the scoreboard, his eighth of the season, to return a two-run lead for the Wind Surge in the bottom of the inning.&nbsp;

Wichita scored four more times in the bottom of the fourth on just a hit. Kaelen Culpepper drew a bases-loaded walk, and then Ben Ross came home on a groundout. Rosario singled to right center for the latter two runs to score and provide a 7-1 Wichita lead.&nbsp;

Culpepper homered for the second straight game to left field in the home half of the sixth.&nbsp;

Rosario proceeded to complete the cycle with a two-RBI triple to right center in the bottom of the eighth to give the Wind Surge a 10-1 lead that became the eventual final score. He’s the second-ever Wichita batter to accomplish the feat.&nbsp;

(AP) — Drew Rasmussen tossed five innings of two-hit ball, Tampa Bay scored three times in the second on an array of singles and bunts, and the Rays held on the rest of the way to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Rasmussen (7-5) struck out five and walked two before turning it over to the Tampa Bay bullpen on a hot, humid night. Three relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk before Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his 14th save.

The Rays (45-35) have won five straight on the road, nine of their last 12 overall and are a season-best 10 games over .500.

José Caballero had an RBI bunt single and Danny Jansen laid down a sacrifice bunt against Michael Wacha during the decisive second for Tampa Bay. Christopher Morel, Josh Lowe and Chandler Simpson had singles in the inning.

Other than that, Wacha (4-7) was tough on the Rays. He went six innings and struck out nine while walking just one.

His biggest problem has been the Royals' biggest problem: They aren't scoring. Not only have they managed four runs total amid a four-game losing streak, they have given Wacha two runs of support or fewer in 13 of his 16 starts this season.

Kansas City has lost nine straight at Kauffman Stadium since beating Detroit on May 31, its longest home skid since dropping 10 in a row in April and May 2023. The Royals also have lost 10 of their last 14 games overall.

The Royals put runners on the corners in the fourth, but Salvador Perez popped out on his first pitch to end the threat.

Kansas City has not hit a home run in its last 54 innings at Kauffman Stadium.

Rays RHP Shane Baz (7-3, 4.79 ERA) starts the series finale Thursday. RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-7, 4.81) starts for the Royals.

Christian MacLeod, Jacob Wosinski, Mike Paredes, and Tanner Andrews combined for the seventh shutout of the season for the Wind Surge. MacLeod gave up just three hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts in his second start back from injury. Wosinski ended up earning the win to jump to 2-1 on the year with Wichita after two innings of two-hit baseball with two walks.&nbsp;
