The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a Wind Advisory and a Red Flag Warning for several counties in central and south-central Kansas due to hazardous weather conditions expected throughout Friday.

The Wind Advisory, in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., warns of southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. The affected counties include Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Reno, Harvey, Kingman, and Harper. The following towns are within the advisory area:

Ellsworth, McPherson, Newton, Wilson, Marion, Peabody, Anthony, Salina, Kingman, Harper, Attica, Hillsboro, Hutchinson, Sterling, Great Bend, and Lyons.

The NWS cautions that the strong winds could blow around unsecured objects, down tree limbs, and cause scattered power outages. High-profile vehicles, such as trucks and RVs, may experience difficult driving conditions.

Simultaneously, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the same time frame, covering an expanded area that includes Russell and Lincoln counties in addition to those under the wind advisory. The warning signifies extreme grassland fire danger, with low humidity levels dropping to 20% combined with strong winds. These conditions make any outdoor burning highly dangerous, as fires can spread rapidly and become difficult to contain.

Counties included in the Red Flag Warning are Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Reno, Harvey, Kingman, and Harper. Towns within the warning area include:

Saline County is under Extreme Fire Volatility on Friday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. due to low humidity (20-30%) and strong southwest winds (30-40 mph, gusting 45-55 mph).

According to Saline County residents are urged to take precautions:

⦁ Check past burns to ensure no smoldering embers remain

⦁ Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks from dragging metal

⦁ Do not discard cigarettes out of vehicle windows

⦁ A single spark can start a wildfire. Stay alert and help prevent fires.

Vanessa Pearce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita, explained that Salina’s fire risk level was upgraded from "very high" to "extreme" due to a combination of factors, including dry conditions, intensifying strong winds, and low humidity.

<a href="https://www.weather.gov/ict/Generic_State_County_GFDI">The Grassland Fire Danger Index</a> assesses wildfire risk by evaluating factors such as dry vegetation, wind speed, humidity, and temperature to classify areas into different wildfire severity levels. Temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees today, with Friday’s highs in the lower 70s.&nbsp;

“We’ll see sustained winds of 25 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 45 to 50 miles per hour. The strongest winds will likely peak around the noon hour and continue through the afternoon," Pearce said. "Later in the day, we’ll have a cold front moving in from the northwest, which will bring even drier air and a shift in wind direction.”

Pearce emphasized fire prevention, advising farmers, ranchers, and travelers to avoid activities that could cause sparks, such as welding near dry grass or dragging chains.

Winds will shift with the passing cold front in the evening, around 6-7 p.m., but fire risks will remain throughout the day due to dry conditions and high winds.

A cooldown arrives on Tuesday, with a high near 68 and a shift to north-northeast winds at 9 to 14 mph, gusting up to 23 mph. The night will see partly cloudy conditions and a low of around 38 degrees, with calm winds.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 70. Light northeast winds will pick up slightly in the afternoon. The evening will remain mostly clear, with temperatures dipping to around 42 degrees.

Temperatures will climb again on Thursday, with sunny skies and a high near 76. The mild weather will continue into the night, with mostly clear skies and a low of around 54 degrees.

NWS five day weather forecast, elavated fire danger

The winter of 2024-2025 brought colder-than-normal temperatures, below-average precipitation, and continued drought conditions across Kansas, according to the latest <a>National Weather Service Wichita climate report</a>.

Kansas recorded its coldest winter since 2013-14, with cities such as Salina, Russell, and Wichita experiencing sustained periods of below-normal temperatures. Despite increased snowfall in some areas, precipitation levels remained low, continuing a trend of drought across much of the state.

Winter temperatures were significantly below average, with Salina recording an average of 30.0°F (-2.9°F below normal), marking its coldest winter since 2013-14. Wichita experienced an average temperature of 33.1°F (-2.4°F below normal), making it the coldest since 2020-21.

February 2025 followed a similar pattern, with many locations seeing their coldest February in years. Salina averaged 29.2°F, which was 5.7°F below normal, making it the coldest February since 2021. Russell saw even greater departures from normal, averaging 27.8°F, or 6.1°F below normal.

A particularly cold stretch in mid-February resulted in record-breaking low temperatures across the state. On February 20, Salina dropped to -10°F, setting a new record for the date. Wichita also saw subzero temperatures, hitting -8°F on the same night.

Snowfall Increases Despite Below-Normal Precipitation

While overall precipitation levels were below normal, snowfall totals were above average across much of Kansas.

Wichita recorded 7.5 inches of snow in February, making it the snowiest February since 2022. Salina saw a seasonal total of 18.2 inches, the most since 2013-14.

Goodland, in western Kansas, recorded 17 inches of snow in February, its highest total for the month since 1997. Meanwhile, Topeka saw its snowiest winter since 2010-11, with seasonal totals exceeding 27 inches.

Despite these above-average snowfall totals, overall precipitation remained below normal, contributing to worsening drought conditions across the state.

The lack of rainfall continued to fuel drought concerns across Kansas. February precipitation totals were well below average:

Salina: 0.40 inches (-0.47 inches below normal) Wichita: 0.54 inches (-0.66 inches below normal) Chanute: 0.48 inches (-1.08 inches below normal)

With 47% of Kansas classified as abnormally dry or in drought, the region saw little improvement over the winter months. The latest <a href="https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/">U.S. Drought Monitor</a> shows that light to moderate drought conditions persisted across the state, particularly in north-central and western Kansas.

Drought intensity remained mostly steady over the past two months, with some areas of far western and southern Kansas seeing slight worsening conditions. Soil moisture levels also declined, posing concerns for the upcoming planting season.

As Kansas heads into spring, meteorologists warn that the ongoing weak La Niña pattern could lead to warmer and drier conditions in the coming months.

The March-May outlook from the <a href="https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/">Climate Prediction Center</a> suggests equal chances for above- or below-normal temperatures, but slightly drier-than-average conditions are expected in western Kansas.

Kansas faces coldest winter in a decade, persistent drought continues

Although some days it may not seem like it, spring is on its way and with it the prospect of severe weather, including thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes, and floods.

To remind Kansans to be prepared for such weather,&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;signed a proclamation on Feb. 28 designating March 3-7, 2025, as Severe Weather/Flood Preparedness Week in Kansas.

“Preparedness is key to staying safe during Kansas’ severe weather events,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;said. “I urge all Kansans to ensure they are prepared in case severe weather hits comes their way and to remain vigilant during the coming months.”

Being prepared includes being aware of weather conditions and having a family emergency kit and emergency plan. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management advises everyone to prepare a home emergency kit with supplies to sustain every family member for a minimum of seven days. Kits should include nonperishable foods, a gallon of water per person per day, blankets, flashlights and batteries, a weather radio, extra clothing, necessary medications, and other survival items. Kits should also be prepared for household pets.

As part of the week’s activities, Kansans are urged to take part in the statewide tornado safety drill on Wednesday, March 5, at 10 a.m. The far eastern tier of counties (Doniphan, Atchison, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, Miami, and Linn) will do their test at 11 a.m.

To avoid any confusion to the public, a live tornado warning will not be sent out on the NOAA Weather Radio. Instead, there will be a Routine Weekly Test message asking people to practice sheltering. County emergency management offices may also sound alert sirens at that time.

According to data from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, January 2025 brought bitter cold and significant snowfall to Salina, marking one of the coldest starts of the year in decades.

Salina recorded an average January temperature of 22.9°F, making it the 14th coldest January on record and tying temperatures from 1985. The extreme cold snap was most severe on January 21, when the temperature plummeted to -13°F, setting a new daily record low for that date.

While temperatures stayed well below normal, Salina also experienced above-normal precipitation, ranking as the 32nd wettest January since records began in 1900. The city received 1.07 inches of precipitation, which was 0.36 inches above average, making it the wettest January since 2023.

Drought Conditions Persist Despite Precipitation

Despite increased precipitation, drought conditions in north-central Kansas, including Salina, remained unchanged. As of late January, the area continued to experience abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.

Forecasters predict a weak La Niña will persist through early spring, bringing drier-than-normal conditions to Kansas. While February could bring a mix of temperatures, precipitation chances in western and central Kansas are expected to be slightly below normal.

Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions this weekend as a significant winter storm is forecast to hit the Salina area starting Saturday afternoon, according to Brian Baerg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The storm is expected to begin with light freezing drizzle or freezing rain Saturday afternoon or evening, potentially transitioning through a brief period of sleet before turning into all snow late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

“The timing of that transition from freezing rain to snow is critical,” Baerg said. “It will determine the total snow accumulation, but regardless of the amounts, the combination of ice and snow will make travel conditions very hazardous.”

 </figure>“We’re really encouraging folks with travel plans for Saturday afternoon through much of Sunday to delay or adjust them,” Baerg said. “Travel will be quite difficult during this time.”While current forecasts do not officially classify the storm as a blizzard, Baerg noted that near-blizzard conditions are possible. Saline County is currently under a winter storm watch, and the National Weather Service will continue to evaluate updated models to determine whether the area warrants a winter storm warning.Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis shared that Salina will see its first significant winter weather of the season this weekend. She noted that if enough ice accumulates, the city is likely to implement its slick streets policy, requiring non-injury accident reports to be filed online to free up emergency resources.“If we do get the amount of ice that they're predicting, the city will enact their slick streets reporting for accidents. This just means that for accident reporting, as long as no one's injured and you can safely get out of the roadway, you'll file that report online," Weis said.&nbsp;She also discussed concerns about dangerously low wind chills, with temperatures expected to reach negative single digits on Sunday and double digits polar wind chills on Monday morning.“I applaud the citizens for making it through these events without a single carbon monoxide incident," Weis said. "Sometimes we’re not as lucky, and it’s just from people finding unconventional ways to heat their homes. Use space heaters in a safe environment—not plugged into power strips—and supervise them. If you leave your home, don’t leave it plugged in.”Saline County Emergency Management is exploring the availability of extended warming shelters for those in need over the weekend.“We’re looking to see if we can find something that would extend later hours on Sunday, especially if the dangerously low temperatures hold true," Weis said. "Typical places like the mall and the YMCA might not be enough since this town is known to shut down earlier on Sundays.”Weis said that ice accumulation is expected to be around one-tenth of an inch, enough to create dangerous travel conditions and potentially cause power outages in residential areas with smaller utility lines. “The smaller lines off the main ones, like in residential areas where the lines aren’t as thick, absolutely have the potential to go down," Weis said."If ice accumulates on broken or weakened tree limbs, that can certainly cause its own issues.”For updates check out the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalineCountyOEM/">Saline County Emergency Management Facebook page here.&nbsp;</a><h2>Warming shelters</h2>The Salina Grace Foundation operates a community resource center and a winter-only overnight emergency shelter to assist those in need.
