K-State's Sundell selected in WNBA draft

NEW YORK (AP) — Trent Grisham, Ben Rice and Austin Wells each hit a solo home run off Seth Lugo in the fifth inning, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Monday night in their first meeting since last year's AL Division Series.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. tied the score in the fourth with his sixth homer, an inning after Bobby Witt Jr.’s home run against Carlos Carrasco (2-1) on the 10th pitch of his at-bat put Kansas City ahead.

Carrasco and four relievers combined on a two-hitter for the Yankees, whose starters entered with a 5.40 ERA.

New York (9-7) had lost five of its previous seven games. The Yankees beat the Royals in four games during their ALDS last October.

Lugo (1-2) gave up 16 homers in 33 starts last season, when he was a first-time All-Star. Mixing nine different pitches, he allowed seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. He had yielded more than two homers just once before, when Philadelphia hit four on Sept. 17, 2020.

Carrasco allowed one hit in five innings. Fernando Cruz, Tim Hill, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams followed. Williams allowed Witt's leadoff single in the ninth and a one-out walk before retiring Miakel Garcia on a game-ending flyout for his second save.

Kansas City (8-9) wore its new powder blue-and-white caps and helmets with dark blue bills along with powder blue uniforms.

Jonathan India went 0 for 3 with a walk as the designated hitter after missing a game with tightness in his right quadriceps.

Royals first baseman Mark Canha (left abductor strain) will start a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday. Left-hander Sam Long was seen by a doctor who confirmed the pitcher has elbow inflammation. Long won't throw for five days, then will ramp up for five days.

Grisham's home run was his fourth this season; last year he hit his fourth on June 22.

Coyotes complete sweep of Tabor in 14-8 victory

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cole Ragans managed to pitch through a left hamstring cramp for 7 2/3 innings and get his first win this season.

“The hammy started to tighten up and I just didn’t want to push it,” Ragans said after leading the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 on Sunday.

A 27-year-old left-hander who finished fourth in AL Cy Young Award voting last year, Ragans struck out 10 and walked none while allowing two runs — one earned — and four hits.

Ragans (1-0) felt a nagging pain in his hamstring throughout the game, but it intensified after he got Austin Hedges to pop out for the second out of the eighth inning. Lucas Erceg relieved and got the last out of the inning. Carlos Estévez allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, then struck out three straight batters for his fifth save in six chances.

“You don’t want it to where it turns more serious than it actually is," Ragans said. "There was no reason to keep trying to pitch.”

Kansas City was optimistic Ragans will take his next turn, likely Friday in Detroit.

“He was honest with us throughout the game and was honest with us when he started feeling in more in the eighth inning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He was trying to be smart and not push through it, which was the right thing to do.”

Ragans threw 89 pitches and became the second pitcher in Royals’ history to have 10 or more strikeouts in three consecutive starts after Kevin Appier in 1996.

Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the second when Daniel Schneemann hit an RBI double and continued home on shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.’s throwing error. Ragans then retired nine straight batters and 17 of his last 18.

Kansas City rallied when Salvador Perez hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Maikel Garcia had a two-run double in the fifth.

“I try to get quick outs,” Ragans said. “If I’m filling up the strike zone, then (the hitters) are going to have to swing the bats. I just try to get ahead in the count and stay ahead and trust the guys behind me to make plays. If they are swinging early in the count, it might help you later to get them to chase some pitches.”

The Salina Liberty mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday night but dropped their fourth straight AF1 contest at the hands of the Southwest Kansas Storm by a final score of 22-20.

With this result, the Liberty fall to 0-4 while the Storm improve to 3-2.

Salina started this game with a bang as Jamario Benson found Malik Honeycutt twice on the opening drive, including a shot to the end zone to put the Liberty on top 6-0.

The Liberty kept the momentum when they intercepted an errant Jalen Morton pass in the end zone on the Storm’s first drive but lost a bit of steam when a bad snap rolled to the back of the end zone for a safety.

Southwest Kansas picked up the pace offensively in the second quarter as Morton found Demarius Washington for a touchdown pass of his own, giving the Storm their first lead of the game 9-6.

In his return to Tony’s Pizza Events Center, the former Liberty star showed out, as Washington would catch 10 passes on 19 targets, finishing his day with 144 yards and two TDs.

A field goal late in the third quarter and the second touchdown pass to Washington put the Storm up 19-6, and it appeared to be all Southwest Kansas going into the fourth.

With a chance to put the game out of reach, the Storm threw a pass that was caught, jarred loose, deflected into the air, and tipped into the hands of DeWayne Autrey for the Morton’s third interception of the game.

In the midst of their next drive, Salina changed things up, returning Javin Kilgo under center, and Kilgo delivered, finding Honeycutt in the back of the end zone for his second touchdown catch of the day.

The Storm would stretch the lead back to nine with a made field goal, but Salina wasn’t done yet, scoring on a toss play to Tracy Brooks from the four-yard line to cut the lead to two.

Salina got the stop they needed on the ensuing drive but couldn’t find the score they needed with under a minute to go.

Seemingly out of the game, the Liberty stalled for time, but three straight stops, including one on third down that stopped the clock, and another on fourth down in the closing seconds, bought the Liberty one final chance to take the lead.

Austin Nuefield came out to attempt his second field goal of the day, but another bad snap rendered a kick impossible, as holder Tracy Brooks scrambled around and threw a desperation pass through the back of the end zone to secure the Liberty’s fate.

Salina will continue the homestand next Saturday at 6:30 when they play host to the Oregon Lightning while the Storm remain on the road to play the Corpus Christi Tritons on the same night.

WICHITA - Kansas Wesleyan Women's Track and Field continued its season this weekend at the KT Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State University and Cessna Stadium.

Competing against some top NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior college athletes, the Coyotes had some outstanding performances.

Coyote Track and Field with strong performances at KT Woodman

BALDWIN CITY - Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football had their backs to the wall at the end of the game on Saturday against Baker University.

A huge defensive stand by the Coyotes would secure a 14-13 win in the Kansas Conference game between the teams.

It was the final KCAC game for Wesleyan, who still has two regular-season games left against Ottawa on Tuesday and Midland on Thursday, but both are non-conference games.

KWU will head into the KCAC tournament with an 8-1 record in conference play, and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament which starts April 25 in Kansas City.

KWU was holding onto the 14-13 advantage when Baker got the ball back at its own 11 with 1:45 left in the game. Baker drove to the KWU-8 when Wesleyan's defense kicked into high gear. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f90d26d3-685c-4bae-98ef-c465019dbb2b?elinkdata=24506">Alexa Mansur</a> was the hero for the Coyotes stopping Llorente for a 1-yard gain, then on back-to-back plays breaking up passes, including on fourth and goal at the KWU-2 to give the ball back to the Coyotes and secure the win.

Baker took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter with 2:17 left on an 11-yard play where Tara Llorente lateralled to Gabriella Zabaletta to finish the final seven yards.

The Wildcats took a 13-0 with 9:41 left in the second quarter on a 2-yard Llorente touchdown run.

The Coyotes finally got on the board as time expired in the first half. HILLSBORO - Kansas Wesleyan Baseball picked up a pair of crucial Kansas Conference victories on Saturday as the Coyotes swept the Tabor Bluejays 11-8 and 17-9 at the Tabor College Baseball Field.

Coyote baseball sweeps Tabor to win series

Kansas Wesleyan Softball team hosted a KCAC foe as the Avila University Eagles came to town for a regular season double header. The Coyotes and Eagles would split one each on the day.

Game one the Coyotes put <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/63f42d17-bd2f-4b7a-96f2-08fb5fb25d87?elinkdata=24444">Caitlyn Collier</a> in the circle for the top of the first. KWU defense got out of the first with no damage after the Eagles left three runners stranded on base. The Coyotes couldn't find any runs themselves either as the Eagles held them to no hits through two innings.

AU would tack on 2 runs in the top of the third and 2 more runs in the top the 5th as the Coyotes offense remained silent though six innings. All four runs would be unearned.

KWU softball earns split with Avila

CLEVELAND (AP) — Luis Ortiz allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high 10 in his home debut for Cleveland as the Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Saturday night to extend their winning streak to five games.

Ortiz (1-2) had his second straight strong outing, giving up just a home run in the fourth inning to Vinnie Pasquantino before leaving after 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander was acquired in December from Pittsburgh.

Gabriel Arias homered and José Ramírez hit a sacrifice fly off Mike Lorenzen (1-2) as the Guardians remained unbeaten at home. Arias connected in the sixth inning. He has three homers this season — all against Kansas City.

The Royals entered the ninth with just two hits before getting four straight singles and scoring twice against Guardians All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase, who hasn't been himself through the season's first two weeks.

⚾ Ortiz strikes out career-high 10 as Guardians beat the Royals 

The Abilene and Southeast of Saline baseball teams played to a doubleheader split on Friday, with the Cowboys taking game one 8-5 and the Trojans coming back to secore the split 11-8.

Game One: Abilene 8, SE of Saline 5

The opener of this series was a thrilling 12-inning affair, with neither side giving an inch until the final frame.

Southeast got the party started with a run in the second and third but the Cowboys came back to tie it up with two of their own in the fourth.

The Trojans found two more runs in the home half of that inning but once again, Abilene responded with two of their own in the visitor’s sixth.

With the 4-4 tie holding, the game went to extras, where Abilene brought what could have been the decisive run to the plate in the ninth, were it not for Southeast again responding with a run of their own to keep the marathon going.

Another scoreless inning took the game to the 12th, where the Cowboys finally got to the Trojan bullpen and broke the game open with a three-run inning.

Heath Hoekman closed out his heroic seven-inning relief appearance by slamming the door shut and securing the win for his team.

Hoekman would allow just one run on five hits, recording five strikeouts while walking just three.

At the plate, Abilene was led by Tyler Holloway, who drove in two runs on three hits as one of five Cowboys to record a multi-hit game.

Game Two: SE of Saline 11, Abilene 8

After the marathon game one, both teams returned to the field with the sun setting fast, and while Abilene would equal their run total from the opener, the Trojans would have their revenge.

Things looked good for the Cowboys early, who took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but Southeast picked up the pace with four runs in the fourth and a whopping six in the fifth.

Down just 11-8, this game was still well within reach for Abilene, but the extra inning win in game one came at the cost of a light-shortened game two, and the Trojans took the victory in five.

The top two spots in the Trojan order led the charge, as Grady Gebhardt went 2-4 with 3 RBI, while Sam Knopf finished the day 2-3 with 2 driven in.

With these results, Southeast moves to 5-3 on the year, while Abilene advances to 2-6.

The Trojans will travel to Saline to face Sacred Heart on Monday, while the Cowboys make the trek to Marysville.

 </figure>Game One: Abilene 8, SE of Saline 5The opener of this series was a thrilling 12-inning affair, with neither side giving an inch until the final frame.Southeast got the party started with a run in the second and third but the Cowboys came back to tie it up with two of their own in the fourth.The Trojans found two more runs in the home half of that inning but once again, Abilene responded with two of their own in the visitor’s sixth.With the 4-4 tie holding, the game went to extras, where Abilene brought what could have been the decisive run to the plate in the ninth, were it not for Southeast again responding with a run of their own to keep the marathon going.Another scoreless inning took the game to the 12th, where the Cowboys finally got to the Trojan bullpen and broke the game open with a three-run inning.Heath Hoekman closed out his heroic seven-inning relief appearance by slamming the door shut and securing the win for his team.Hoekman would allow just one run on five hits, recording five strikeouts while walking just three.At the plate, Abilene was led by Tyler Holloway, who drove in two runs on three hits as one of five Cowboys to record a multi-hit game.Game Two: SE of Saline 11, Abilene 8After the marathon game one, both teams returned to the field with the sun setting fast, and while Abilene would equal their run total from the opener, the Trojans would have their revenge.Things looked good for the Cowboys early, who took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but Southeast picked up the pace with four runs in the fourth and a whopping six in the fifth.Down just 11-8, this game was still well within reach for Abilene, but the extra inning win in game one came at the cost of a light-shortened game two, and the Trojans took the victory in five.The top two spots in the Trojan order led the charge, as Grady Gebhardt went 2-4 with 3 RBI, while Sam Knopf finished the day 2-3 with 2 driven in.With these results, Southeast moves to 5-3 on the year, while Abilene advances to 2-6.The Trojans will travel to Saline to face Sacred Heart on Monday, while the Cowboys make the trek to Marysville.

⚾️ Cowboys and Trojans split eventful doubleheader

The Southeast of Saline softball team continued their reign of terror over the area on Friday night in a clean sweep of Abilene, defeating the 4A foe 12-0 in the opener and 13-8 in the nightcap.

Game One: SE of Saline 12, Abilene 0

After a hot performance against Republic County, the Lady Trojans took a slower, steadier approach in game one, plating three runs in the first, two in the second and third, and five in the fourth en route to a comfortable victory.

Reese Heinrich epitomized the leadoff hitter with a perfect 4-4 day at the plate, while Abby Wyatt flexed her muscle in the 3-hole, leading the team with 4 RBI.

Those two were far from the only damage dealers on the day as five different Lady Trojans turned in multi-hit performances while Heinrich, Wyatt, and Emma Zurfluh all drove in two or more runs.

In the circle, Karlee Zurfluh was close to unhittable, shutting out the Cowgirls while surrendering just three hits and two walks to six strikeouts.

Game Two: SE of Saline 13, Abilene 8

The nightcap of this two-game set saw the floodgates open offensively, but SES was up to the challenge, coming back late to score 11 runs in the final four frames in an offensive win.

After a slow start for Southeast, the Cowgirls struck for three runs in the third and fourth to take a 6-1 lead at the halfway mark.

That lead wouldn’t last long as the Lady Trojans tacked on eight runs in a monster fourth inning, adding two more in the fifth and one in the sixth to secure the 13-8 win.

Abby Wyatt’s assault on softballs continued as the senior went 3-4 with 5 RBI on the day, while Ashley Whelchel drove in two runs of her own in the winning effort.

Madelyn McFadden and Karlee Zurfluh came in to clean up the final four innings in the circle, allowing just three runs and two walks while recording two strikeouts.

With these wins, the Lady Trojans move to 5-1 on the year and are on a four-game winning streak, while Abilene’s hunt for a win continues at 0-8.&nbsp;

SES will be back in action on Monday when they make the short trip to Salina to take on Sacred Heart.
