MANHATTAN, Kan. – Max Urick, a 2017 NACDA Hall of Fame and 2018 K-State Athletics Hall of Fame selection, passed away Friday in his home in Manhattan. He was 85.

“Today is a sad day for K-State,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “Max was one of the most respected athletics directors in our history, both institutionally and across all of college athletics, and had such a big impact on our entire University community during his tenure. He continued to support our mission and efforts as a Manhattan resident and personally was a tremendous friend and mentor to me. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lynn and the Urick family during this difficult time.”

Urick’s dynamic leadership, sense of direction and expectation of a high level of professionalism within the department catapulted Wildcat athletics into the 21st Century and as a leader in the Big 12 Conference. He served as the department’s athletics director from 1993-2001 in the midst of Bill Snyder’s well-documented first tenure as football coach.

He was a key player in the development of the Big 12 Conference and its ongoing transition. In doing so, he solidified K-State’s athletic future in one of the premier athletics conferences in college sports. But, as a team player, Urick was always quick to give credit to the many people involved in success at Kansas State.

Under Urick’s guidance, the athletics department made tremendous strides toward stabilizing financial balance while continuing an exciting growth period for athletic facilities at K-State. Urick placed a high priority on gender-equity issues at K-State by implementing several plans to enhance and increase women’s opportunities at K-State. The annual operating budget doubled during Urick’s tenure, proving that the financial health of the K-State athletics department stabilized and thrived under Urick’s direction.

Urick came to K-State after spending 19 years at Iowa State, including 10 as the Cyclones’ director of athletics. He originally joined the ISU staff as assistant athletics director in 1974 and then took over as athletics director in 1983. Before his arrival at Iowa State in 1974, Urick spent 13 seasons as a collegiate football coach at several levels.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior P.J. Haggerty earned his first career Big 12 Player of the Week award on Monday afternoon after averaging 31.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists in helping Kansas State to a 2-1 record and a runner-up finish at the Hall of Fame Classic.

Haggerty was joined on this week’s Starting Five by Arizona’s Jaden Bradley and Koa Peat, UCF’s Jamichael Stillwell and Iowa State’s Tamin Lipsey.

Haggerty averaged 31.7 points on 57.6 percent (34-of-59) shooting, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from 3-point range, and 88 percent (22-of-25) from the free throw line to go with 7.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.3 steals in 34.6 minutes per game in victories over Tulsa (85-84) and Mississippi State (98-77) and a narrow loss to Nebraska (86-85). He posted back-to-back 30-point games against Tulsa and MSU, including a season-high 37 points in the win over the Bulldogs.

Haggerty is the first Wildcat to open a season with 6 consecutive games of 20 or more points, while his 168 points are the most by a player in that span. He is the first player to post consecutive 30-point performances since Markquis Nowell (vs. Texas and Baylor) in January 2023.

Haggerty opened the week by posting a rare 30-point, 10-rebound double-double against Tulsa on Nov. 17, as he poured in 31 points on 10-of-17 field goals and 11-of-12 free throws to go with a career-tying 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 32 minutes. He is the first Wildcat to post such a double-double since Michael Beasley had 33 points and 14 rebounds against Colorado on March 4, 2008. His 27 second-half points are the fifth-most in any half and the most since 2009.

It was his fourth career double-double and his second in a Wildcat uniform.

Haggerty became the first Wildcat to post a stat line of 30 or more points, 5 or more rebounds and 5 or more assists in the win over Mississippi State to open the Hall of Fame Classic on Nov. 20, as he scored a season-high 37 points on 13-of-21 field goals, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and 7-of-8 free throws to go with a game-high 8 assists and 7 rebounds in 34 minutes. It was the most points by a K-State player in 49 career games played at the T-Mobile Center and the most over since Barry Brown Jr’s 38 points against Oklahoma State on Jan. 10, 2018.

Haggerty capped the week with 27 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in a heartbreaking 86-85 loss to unbeaten Nebraska in the Hall of Fame Classic Championship game. He tied the game at 85-all on a layup with 27 seconds left before the Cornhuskers converted on the game-winning free throw with .06 seconds left on the clock.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Flory Bidunga had 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five blocks, Bryson Tiller added 17 points and nine boards, and Kansas beat Notre Dame 71-61 in the Players Era Tournament on Monday for its first power-conference victory of the season.

Tre White chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds for Kansas (4-2), which was coming off a 78-66 loss to then-No. 5 Duke in the Champions Classic. Melvin Council Jr. scored 12 and Darryn Peterson, averaging 25 points in two games, did not play.

Markus Burton led Notre Dame (4-2) with 24 points and Jalen Haralson added 13.

Bidunga scored 14 points in the first half on 6-of-9 shooting to help Kansas take a 39-32 lead. Notre Dame got as close as four points in the second half.

Council made back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half to give Kansas a 51-40 lead. A White 3-pointer made it 62-54 with 5:33 left and Jamari McDowell made his only 3 at the 2:41 mark for a 10-point lead

The last meeting between the schools was on Jan. 23, 1988, a Notre Dame 80-76 win at home.

Jackson’s accolade was the 31st&nbsp;time a Wildcat has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the first since running back DJ Giddens earned the nod following the 2023 UCF game. It is the first time ever the Wildcat offensive line has picked up the unit honor as the Big 12 began that award this season.

A native of Haines City, Florida, Jackson rushed for 293 yards and three touchdowns against the Utes to break Darren Sproles’ school record of 292 yards set against Louisiana in 2004. It was also 20 yards more than Sproles’ conference-game record of 273 yards against Missouri in 2003. When adding in his 19-yard reception, Jackson’s 312 scrimmage yards ranked second in school history and was the ninth-most all-purpose yards in K-State history. He became the first Wildcat to eclipse 300 all-purpose yards since Tyler Lockett had a 321-yard output at West Virginia in 2014.

• A proven winner with a championship history, Chris Klieman holds a 125-47 career record, as his 72.7% career winning percentage ranks fourth among current FBS coaches that have completed at least 10 seasons. He is also one of just 15 current Power 4 full-time head coaches with at least 100 career victories.

• Klieman, who is 53-34 since arriving at K-State, has led the Cats to five victories over teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Top 25, the most of any active Big 12 program since 2019.

• K-State enters this week’s game ranked ninth nationally in fewest penalties per game (4.1) and 11th in fewest penalty yards per game (37.2).

• Since 2022, the Wildcats have averaged 42.59 penalty yards per game (51 games) to rank eighth among Power 4 teams, while their 4.86 penalties per game rank seventh.

• K-State is the nation’s best in non-offensive touchdowns over the last 25-plus seasons as it has 139 since 1999, 11 more than the next closest team (Alabama – 128) and 18 more than the next Big 12 program (Utah – 121).

CAREER RECORD FOR OAKLEY• Tight end Garrett Oakley has tallied 13 career receiving touchdowns, which is the most ever by a K-State tight end.

• The previous record of 10 was shared by current Washington Commander Ben Sinnott (2021-23) and Henry Childs (1971-73).

• Oakley, a product of Columbus, Nebraska, has six touchdown catches this season, which is tied for third in the nation among tight ends and is tied for the school record at the position.

• Two of Oakley’s touchdowns came against TCU as he is one of three Big 12 tight ends with a multi-touchdown game in conference play this season.

• Oakley also ranks fourth in school history among tight ends in career catches (71) and fifth in yards (779). He has 38 catches this year to tie for second in school history at the position.

DEFENSIVE NOTESOPENING DRIVE DEFENSE• Kansas State has allowed points only four times on opponents’ first drive of the game or second half, which was a field goal to open the game at Baylor, a short-field touchdown by Kansas following a fumble on the opening kickoff and scores by Texas Tech and Utah to start the second half.

• Of the 22 total drives to start a half, the defense has forced 14 punts – including eight 3-and-outs – an interception, a fumble recovery, a missed field goal and a turnover on downs.

This season, conference coaches decided to select the All-KCAC teams for the entire conference combined instead of in the two divisions. Last season's teams were selected by division, and in 2023 coaches selected the All-KCAC teams by combining the divisions.

Luna and Lanza Ruffino were part of KWU's offensive line that helped the Coyotes average 397.9 yards per game this season, and they were instrumental in blocking for the top running back in the KCAC. The duo were also key in helping the Coyotes allow only 13 sacks on the season.

Skerik had 44 tackles on the season for the Coyotes, which ranked 27th in the Bissell Division. His six sacks on the season ranked second best in the Division and his 8.5 tackles for loss ranked ninth in the Division. His sack total ranked 27th in the entire NAIA and was sixth best in the entire KCAC conference.

Collins had four interceptions on the season, the second highest total in the Bissell Division. He had 54 tackles which ranked 13th in the Division. He ranks 20th in the entire NAIA in interceptions.

🏈 Ten Coyotes named to All-KCAC Football teams

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Kansas Wesleyan Men's Basketball dropped a 77-64 decision to the No. 13 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Saturday night at Mueller Sports Complex.

A 14-3 by Oklahoma Wesleyan after the Coyotes had cut the difference to two points to start the second half was enough cushion for the Eagles in the game.

The run made it 50-37 in favor of the Eagles with 15:12 left in the game.

The Coyotes pushed back, cutting the lead to seven at 53-46 with 12:32 left on a bucket by Gabriel Phillips, but KWU got no closer the rest of the night.

KWU fell behind 11-3 to start the game with 16:32 left in the first half.

OKWU led 25-17 with 5:43 left in the first half but the Coyotes would use a 9-1 run to tie things up at 26 on a bucket by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d37ae420-5265-4c83-a4e9-e545851b6556?elinkdata=33699">Caiden Punt</a> with 3:28 to go.

The Coyotes could not grab the lead, and trailed by four at the half at 36-32.

Punt led the Coyotes with 19 points and 12 rebounds. KWU shot 25 of 64 from the field for 39.1 percent, but were just 3 of 24 from 3-point range for 12.5 percent. The Coyotes did outrebound the Eagles 40-38.

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Kansas Wesleyan Men's Basketball dropped a 77-64 decision to the No. 13 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Saturday night at Mueller Sports Complex.A 14-3 by Oklahoma Wesleyan after the Coyotes had cut the difference to two points to start the second half was enough cushion for the Eagles in the game.The run made it 50-37 in favor of the Eagles with 15:12 left in the game.The Coyotes pushed back, cutting the lead to seven at 53-46 with 12:32 left on a bucket by Gabriel Phillips, but KWU got no closer the rest of the night.KWU fell behind 11-3 to start the game with 16:32 left in the first half.OKWU led 25-17 with 5:43 left in the first half but the Coyotes would use a 9-1 run to tie things up at 26 on a bucket by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d37ae420-5265-4c83-a4e9-e545851b6556?elinkdata=33699">Caiden Punt</a> with 3:28 to go.The Coyotes could not grab the lead, and trailed by four at the half at 36-32.Punt led the Coyotes with 19 points and 12 rebounds. KWU shot 25 of 64 from the field for 39.1 percent, but were just 3 of 24 from 3-point range for 12.5 percent. The Coyotes did outrebound the Eagles 40-38.

It was the Coyotes' third consecutive victory and their fifth in the last six games (5-2, 3-0).

Chauncey, a junior forward and the team's lone returning starter, was 7 of 10 from the field, 4 of 5 at the free throw line and had four rebounds and four assists.

"I've been really excited about her progression and just how she's been able to contribute with our team," coach <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/4a8db5c3-4b48-4b64-a29c-1c46563637e7?elinkdata=33664">Harper Taylor</a> said on the postgame radio show. "And I feel like her confidence is really helping some of our other players gain that confidence as well. When she goes in it's a dominating force to be reckoned with and I'm really proud of that."

The Coyotes promptly answered with a 13-0 burst of their own and trailed 28-26 at halftime.

A 7-0 Eagles' run gave them a 37-30 lead with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Wesleyan responded with a 16-6 spurt and led 46-43 with 8:02 remaining - the last three points on <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/20adf1fc-b759-4617-a030-eb5affab11d9?elinkdata=33664">Adriana DiPrima's</a> 3-pointer.

The game remained close until the final 2½ minutes. Trailing 57-56 <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/e0584948-0a13-4701-b6f0-0a329a9836f6?elinkdata=33664">Emma Gertken's</a> 3-pointer gave the Coyotes a 59-57 lead and ignited the pivotal last run. Two Ozuna free throws with 10.2 seconds left made it 61-58 and OKWU missed a shot and two free throws in the waning seconds. DiPrima clinched it with a free throw with 1.2 seconds left.

"We're trying to find the open person at the right time," she said. "Some of our timing and pacing is there but I just think as a young team we are still trying to work through a lot of those X's and O's."

The Coyotes shot 47 percent (23 of 49) including 6 of 14 from 3-point range. They were outrebounded 27-25 but had just 10 turnovers and got 28 bench points compared to OKWU's 10.

Gracie Alexander led OKWU (3-3, 0-3) with 16 points. The Eagles shot 45.5 percent (24 of 54), were 5 of 19 from deep and had 12 turnovers.

"Excited about it, ecstatic about it, but I know that we've got a lot to work on," Taylor said. "I am happy with how much fight our team had. I feel like we kind of came out a little bit flat in some different areas but I'm just proud of how they were able to finish."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for a season-high 352 yards, Kareem Hunt ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, and Harrison Butker's fifth field goal of the game gave the Kansas City Chiefs a come-from-behind 23-20 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Rashee Rice had eight catches for 141 yards, including two crucial ones on the Chiefs' tying touchdown drive in regulation and another in overtime, after Kansas City (6-5) had forced the high-powered Colts (8-3) to punt on a fourth consecutive three-and-out.

Butker ended the game with a 27-yard field goal with just under two minutes left in overtime, potentially keeping the Chiefs' playoff hopes alive. The reigning AFC champions had lost their previous two games, and another defeat against one of the hottest teams in the NFL on Sunday would have left Andy Reid's team needing a whole lot of help to make it back to the postseason.

The Colts blew a 20-9 fourth-quarter lead thanks in part to some questionable play-calling — and some worse execution.

They went almost entirely away from running back Jonathan Taylor down the stretch, putting the game instead in Daniel Jones' hands.

He wound up with 181 yards passing and two touchdowns, but most of that production came in the first half. Jones was just 8 of 18 for 83 yards in the second half, which allowed Mahomes and Co. to mount a comeback that injected some life in a dim season.

Taylor, meanwhile, only carried 16 times for 58 yards in his first game since a record-setting performance against the Falcons, when the Colts' star ran for 244 yards, piled up 286 from scrimmage and reached the end zone three times in an overtime win.

The Chiefs have struggled all season with turnovers at inopportune times, and another set the tone for the first half. Mahomes had a pass from his 4-yard line batted by Laiatu Latu, who brought it in himself for the defensive end's third pick of the season.

Two players later, Jones hit Michael Pittman to give Indianapolis a 7-0 lead.

The Chiefs answered with the first of two grinding, eight-plus minute first-half drives, but each netted just a field goal. And when the Colts moved briskly downfield again, and Jones found Drew Ogletree in the back of the end zone, they had built a 14-3 advantage.

The Colts were still clinging to 20-9 lead as the game headed to the fourth quarter.

Just as he's done so many times in his career, though, Mahomes mounted another comeback. He marched Kansas City 56 yards before Hunt's touchdown dive, then Mahomes found Rice for a 2-point conversion to close within a field goal with 8 1/2 minutes to go.

The Chiefs defense proceeded to step up, forcing a series of three-and-outs by the league's No. 1 offense.

Kansas City took over after the second one with 4:43 left at its 6. Mahomes hit Rice for 47 yards, then he found him again on fourth-and-3 near midfield for a 19-yard gain. Hunt's dive on third-and-1 gave the Chiefs first down at the Colts 2 with a minute to go, but he was stuffed on the next play, Mahomes threw incomplete on the next, and he was sacked on third down.

Butker banged through his fourth field goal, a 25-yard chip-shot as time expired, to send the game to overtime.

Turned out the Chiefs would give Butker another chance a few minutes later, this time to win the game.

Colts: WR Ashton Dulin left in the second half with a hamstring injury.

Chiefs: LG Trey Smith left in the second half with an ankle injury. TE Noah Gray finished the game in the concussion protocol.

The Chiefs visit the Cowboys on Thursday.
