WACO, Texas (AP) — Sawyer Robertson threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns as Baylor won its sixth straight to keep alive its slim hopes for a berth in the Big 12 championship game, beating Kansas 45-17 on Saturday.

The Bears (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) scored touchdowns on three consecutive possessions in the first half to take a 21-7 lead, then found the end zone on all three of their drives in the third quarter.

Bryson Washington ran for 192 yards on 27 carries that included a 10-yard TD run and punching in from the 1 in the second half for Baylor.

Kansas (5-7, 4-5) entered on a three-game winning streak — all against ranked teams — to be in position for bowl eligibility with a win. But the Jayhawks had no answers for Baylor’s offensive.

Baylor, which started 0-3 in league play, had to wait for the outcomes of games later Saturday. Arizona had to beat Arizona State, Kansas State had to beat Iowa State and Houston had to beat BYU for the Bears to get into next week's conference title game.

Robertson was 23-for-31 passing, with TDs of 36- and 39-yards to Monaray Baldwin in the first quarter before a 14-yard score to Josh Cameron in the second. Baldwin caught seven passes for 119 yards, and Cameron added eight receptions for 102.

Devin Neal ran for 133 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Kansas. Jalon Daniels was 12-of-23 passing for 280 yards passing, and had two passes intercepted by Baylor safety Devyn Bobby.

Kansas: The Jayhawks rarely had issues moving the ball in the first half. Despite trailing 21-10 at intermission, the Jayhawks had outgained Baylor 301-283. Their problems came with holding onto the ball and scoring when they had the chance. Tabor Allen missed a 38-yard field goal to end the Jayhawks’ first possession, and they had promising drives end on a Daniels interception and Tevita Noa fumble after a 39-yard reception.

Baylor: The Bears made a remarkable turnaround in the second half of the season. They began the year with coach Dave Aranda’s future considered tenuous at best, and a 2-4 start only made calls for him to be replaced louder. But Aranda and Baylor haven’t lost since Oct. 5 against Iowa State.

Baylor had to wait to see when and where it will play its next game.

SES vs. Nemaha Central 2A state championship LIVE COVERAGE

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs recovered a botched snap while the Las Vegas Raiders were within range of a go-ahead field goal with 15 seconds remaining on Friday, preserving a 19-17 victory for Kansas City and giving the franchise its 10th consecutive playoff berth.

The Raiders (2-10) had taken over at their own 8-yard line with just under two minutes to go, and Aidan O'Connell quickly moved them across midfield, eventually spiking the ball at the Kansas City 32 to stop the clock.

Rather than try a potential winning field goal — Daniel Carlson had already missed three from 50-plus — the Raiders lined up to run a play. Andre James snapped the ball when O'Connell wasn't expecting it and it bounced off the quarterback's shoulder. Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton jumped on the ball, and the recovery stood when a flag on the play turned out to be an illegal shift by the Raiders.

It was the 14th consecutive game decided by one possession that Kansas City (11-1) has won.

The Raiders had a chance earlier in the fourth quarter, and O'Connell similarly drove them across midfield. But the Chiefs forced three straight incomplete passes — George Karlaftis and Justin Reid batted down two — to bring up fourth down. Carlson headed onto the field, but his 58-yard try with 2:21 never got near the uprights.

Patrick Mahomes had 306 yards passing and a TD for Kansas City, while fill-in kicker Matt Wright made four field goals.

O'Connell finished with 340 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Raiders, who have lost eight of nine to their bitter AFC West rivals. Brock Bowers had 10 catches for 140 yards and one of the scores.

The hapless Raiders were able to hang around thanks to the same problems that have plagued the Chiefs much of the season: Their offensive tackles were unable to give Mahomes time to throw, their secondary kept breaking down and they committed too many penalties — three on one offensive possession alone.

In fact, Mahomes was under extreme duress when he found Justin Watson from 6 yards out late in the first half. The pass not only gave the Chiefs a 10-3 lead but sent the two-time MVP past Len Dawson with his franchise-record 328th TD throw.

O'Connell, who was thrust back onto the field when Gardner Minshew went on injured reserve with a broken collarbone this week, got off to a slow start after missing a month with a broken thumb. But while the Chiefs continued to kick field goals, the second-year pro found his rhythm for the Raiders, eventually slinging a pair of TD passes to give Las Vegas the lead.

The first was to Bowers, already one of the most productive rookies in NFL history, with 1:40 left in the third quarter. Then, after the Chiefs went three-and-out, O'Connell hit Tre Tucker with 58-yard strike on the first play of the fourth quarter.

🏈 Chiefs clinch playoff berth with victory over the Raiders

In 2005, Southeast of Saline appeared in and won its first state football championship in school history, defeating Silver Lake 30-28.

The road back to that promised land has been anything but straight and simple, but on Friday night, the Trojans have earned an opportunity to play for a second state title in Hutch against the two-time defending state champs in Nemaha Central.

In the 19 years since their last championship appearance, Southeast of Saline underwent a coaching change, joined a league, and fought through several re-classifications, but one thing has remained the same: the tradition of excellence in Gypsum.

Under 15th-year head coach Mitch Gebhardt, the Trojans have posted 12 winning seasons and made several deep playoff runs, but even amidst all that success, the last five years have been a sight to behold.

Since kicking off the 2020 season, Southeast has an overall record of 53-4, with each of those losses capping off a deep playoff run in a state quarter or semifinal.

Those campaigns served as building blocks as the Trojans grew their program from a feel good success story, into an emerging dynasty, and now, just one box remains unchecked.

“We’ve had so many good teams over the years, and all of those guys helped us build towards getting to this game,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said. “It’s a great feeling to play in this game, and our kids are awfully proud and excited to do it.”

In addition to great teams on the field, Gebhardt has built a small but mighty coaching staff, with Chance Ptacek, Trenton Douglas, Todd Baird and Kent Jacobson helping to elevate the program to new heights.

“The guys I get to coach with are outstanding,” Gebhardt said. “They don’t worry about how long it takes; they just worry about getting the job done, and that’s a big deal when you’re coaching football. Some weeks take longer than others, but those guys do everything they have to put our kids in a position to be successful.”

The Trojans picked up right where they left off in 2024, rolling eight opponents to finish a fifth straight undefeated regular season.&nbsp;

From there, they handed a loss to Larned 76-12, knocked off Norton 34-7, held off Hoisington 30-8, and last week, beat Beloit 34-30 on a thrilling buzzer-beating touchdown.

“I’m really proud of how we handled the situations we faced in that Beloit game,” he said. “Our kids did a great job of not panicking and I think our defense set us up for that finish. We stuck to the game plan, made tackles when we needed to and gave our offense an opportunity to score with 42 seconds left. That was a proud coach moment.”

With 12 wins behind them, just one opponent remains, but the Trojans will have their work cut out for them against a Nemaha Central team that has served as Class 2A’s final boss for three years running.

“Nemaha Central has been outstanding over the years, and their coaching staff does a great job with their guys,” Gebhardt said. “It’s neat that we get to go up against the two-time defending state champs to see how we stack up against them.”

The Thunder have strung together a run rivaling that of SES, winning three state championships since merging Nemaha Valley and Baileyville B&amp;B in 2014.

In addition to two state titles, Nemaha Central boasts a record of 37-1 over the last three years and will be considered favorites by many to three-peat, an outside attitude that suits Southeast just fine.

“If you look at the big picture, they’re the two-time defending state champions, and I think a lot of people will view us as underdogs in this game,” he said. “That’s something that we’ll embrace and talk about, but they’re the champs until they’re not, and we have to take that mentality into this game.”

That lone loss for the Thunder came in a 16-8 headscratcher to Marysville in week one, but since then, Nemaha has been perfect, winning their last seven in the regular season and rolling through Fredonia, Sabetha, Osage City and Council Grove in these playoffs.

Much of Nemaha Central’s success has come on the back of quarterback Carter Hajek, who has completed 60% of his passes for 1,026 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Hajek truly shines on the ground, where he leads the Thunder with 330 carries for 2,148 yards and 38 touchdowns, with just one fumble all season long.

“Their quarterback run game is what that offense revolves around,” Gebhardts said. “You can’t stop that, but you can try to slow it down a little. He gets a lot of the credit but they do a great job with their scheme and blocking for him to make that happen. We’ll have to get a lot of hats to the football and play together on defense on Friday.”

Hajak has certainly garnered a lot of media attention in the buildup to this game and should rightfully be considered the best pure athlete on the field. But with a three-headed monster on offense and a swarming defense that allows just 11 points per game, Southeast will be ready to challenge the kings on Friday night.

Despite being a first-year starter, Gannon Jacobson has already etched his name into the record books at Southeast of Saline, completing 58% of his passes for over 2,000 yards, 31 touchdowns and ten interceptions while also rushing for just shy of 1,000 yards and eight more touchdowns on the ground.

“Gannon works hard, and he’s a good athlete,” he said. “We knew he’d be good, but he’s continued to improve throughout the year. When you struggle with something you get better, and he struggled early on but he’s worked hard at it and things have slowed down for him. He sees things now that he didn’t before.”

While Jacobson rules the air, Grady Gebhardt, the youngest son of head coach Mitch Gebhardt, has owned the ground, toting the rock 176 times for 1,340 yards and 14 touchdowns, adding 20 receptions for 303 yards and two more scores in the passing game.

“Getting an opportunity to coach my kids and the kids in their classes has been outstanding,” he said. “All of them bring something a little different to the table, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it.”

Teams that have managed to slow down Jacobson and Gebhardt have seldom had an answer for Tucker Thaxton on the edge, as the senior has torched opposing secondaries for 935 yards and 14 touchdowns as Jacobson’s favorite target.

“Tucker has great speed but his route running is outstanding,” Gebhardt said. “He’s worked his tail off to get to where he’s at. Defensively, he’s hard-nosed; he’ll come up and make a hard tackle when he needs to but he knows when to hunt that football too.”

All of this is to say nothing of the Trojan defense led by Brody Chambers (66 tackles, 20 TFL, 6 sacks), Kanyon Douglas (98 tackles, 3 INT), Bryson Lippold (66 tackles), and a slew others, who have allowed 21 or more points just one time all season.

While the Trojans have not played in a football state title game since 2005, this group of players is no stranger to pressure, having played through multiple deep playoff runs in almost every sport in Gypsum.

“These kids have played in so many big games between football, basketball, baseball and track,” he said. “I think they’ll handle this moment well. Winning a game like we did last week helps confidence and helps the way you look at things as well.”

A win over Nemaha Central will take nothing less than the Trojan’s best game of football on Friday, but Southeast is ready to leave it all on the field as they look to cap off the first undefeated season in program history with a 2A title.

“We have to make sure that we take care of the football and get first downs on offense,” Gebhardt said. “In games like this every play matters and when we have an opportunity to make a play we have to make a play. Defensively we have to play as a team and get to the football together. In big teams like this a special teams play can also make a big difference.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 on Friday at HCC-Gowans Stadium in Hutch.

 </figure>In the 19 years since their last championship appearance, Southeast of Saline underwent a coaching change, joined a league, and fought through several re-classifications, but one thing has remained the same: the tradition of excellence in Gypsum.Under 15th-year head coach Mitch Gebhardt, the Trojans have posted 12 winning seasons and made several deep playoff runs, but even amidst all that success, the last five years have been a sight to behold.Since kicking off the 2020 season, Southeast has an overall record of 53-4, with each of those losses capping off a deep playoff run in a state quarter or semifinal.<figure>

 </figure>Those campaigns served as building blocks as the Trojans grew their program from a feel good success story, into an emerging dynasty, and now, just one box remains unchecked.“We’ve had so many good teams over the years, and all of those guys helped us build towards getting to this game,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said. “It’s a great feeling to play in this game, and our kids are awfully proud and excited to do it.”In addition to great teams on the field, Gebhardt has built a small but mighty coaching staff, with Chance Ptacek, Trenton Douglas, Todd Baird and Kent Jacobson helping to elevate the program to new heights.<figure>

 </figure>“The guys I get to coach with are outstanding,” Gebhardt said. “They don’t worry about how long it takes; they just worry about getting the job done, and that’s a big deal when you’re coaching football. Some weeks take longer than others, but those guys do everything they have to put our kids in a position to be successful.”The Trojans picked up right where they left off in 2024, rolling eight opponents to finish a fifth straight undefeated regular season.&nbsp;From there, they handed a loss to Larned 76-12, knocked off Norton 34-7, held off Hoisington 30-8, and last week, beat Beloit 34-30 on a thrilling buzzer-beating touchdown.“I’m really proud of how we handled the situations we faced in that Beloit game,” he said. “Our kids did a great job of not panicking and I think our defense set us up for that finish. We stuck to the game plan, made tackles when we needed to and gave our offense an opportunity to score with 42 seconds left. That was a proud coach moment.”<figure>

Trojans travel to Hutch for state showdown with defending champion Nemaha Central

HENDERSON, Nevada&nbsp;– (9/12) K-State blitzed DePaul in the second quarter and used a complete team effort to secure a 92-66 win in its final game of the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic at Lee’s Family Forum.

With the win, K-State head coach Jeff Mittie secured the 650th&nbsp;win of his 33-season coaching career, 650-371 (.637). During his time in Manhattan, Mittie has notched a mark of 195-136 (.589).

K-State was paced by the double-doubles of Ayoka Lee and Serena Sundell. Lee tallied a game-high 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting, a game-high 10 rebounds and four blocks. With her scoring performance, Lee moved to within 25 points of setting the K-State career scoring record.

Sundell carded her first double-double of the season and notched 15 points, tied her career-high with 11 assists and pulled in six rebounds.

Joining the offensive attack were Zyanna Walker with 13 points, including 12 in the second quarter, five assists and four rebounds.

Poindexter chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Sides came off the bench to add 11 points, including a 3-of-4 effort from 3-point range, six rebounds and four assists.

- K-State (6-1) took control of the first quarter midway through the frame. DePaul (2-5) squared the game at 11 with 4:27 to play. The Wildcats answered with an 11-0 run to close the quarter, capped by a Jaelyn Glenn three-pointer to beat the buzzer and build a 22-11 advantage. Lee and Sundell paced the Wildcats with six points each.

- In the second quarter, Walker caught fire from beyond the arc to help stake the Wildcats to a 44-21 lead with 4:21 to play. Q: Does Raider Week have any particular importance to you just looking at NFL history?

REID:&nbsp;“Well, there have been a lot of great games. I know both teams kind of understand that there’s been a rivalry for a lot of years, a lot of great players (on) both sides, (on) both teams. That’s really where the – I’d tell you the history started, back in the AFL (American Football League) with it and both teams have good players, and so they battled each other – violently they battled each other (laughs). Again, great competition against each other.”

Q: Is there anything that you noticed from D.J. Humphries?

REID:&nbsp;“Listen, he (D.J. Humphries) looked healthy moving around, (he) felt good. It’s just a matter of him getting back in the swing and then also compounding with just the offense and making sure that he has the terminology down and he’ll go from there.”

Q: What’s a reasonable timeframe for D.J. Humphries?

REID:&nbsp;“Eh. We’ll just play it by ear. I told him (D.J. Humphries) let’s just keep the communication open and we’ll figure it out. That’s kind of what we’ve done with the other guys that have come in and we’ll just keep open communication. He seems like a guy that’ll shoot you straight so that’s what I’d expect.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you guys like about Matthew Wright?

REID:&nbsp;“I think we all have trust in him (Matthew Wright) from having been around him, so we look forward to welcoming him into the mix. I know guys know him and have made him, I think, feel that way coming back here – (we have) full trust in him, yeah.”

REID:&nbsp;“Listen, there have been some real good things but there (are) some things we have to clean up. The guys are taking accountability for that – and coaches and that’s what’s it all about (and) you work through those things and make sure that you can get yourself where you want to be.”

Q:&nbsp;How are you guys handling Thanksgiving tomorrow and how much family time will you get yourself?

REID:&nbsp;“There are some unique weeks, but we’re making them consistent with what we do and working around it – make sure the guys get enough recovery time. They always have tomorrow off after the walk through and then before they get to the hotel, so they have time to visit with their families (and) do what they need to do there.”

REID:&nbsp;“I think it’s fantastic because it does good for people – all over the world. It’s an amazing thing to look at and watch and see how it’s grown throughout the country. Then, how it’s giving people a chance to have maybe an easier life that don’t have that.”

2A State Championship game between SES & Nemaha Central to be broadcast on KINA

The Kansas Wesleyan Women's Basketball team heads into the Thanksgiving Break on a high note as the Coyotes outscored the Bellevue Bruins 48-22 during the second and third quarters for a 77-59 win on Tuesday night at Mabee Arena.

It is the fifth straight win for the Coyotes who improved to 7-2 overall with the win.

"We played really really well tonight especially from a defensive perspective," Wesleyan head coach <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/3e2d01c9-4165-490c-af05-2cfc3128b5c5?elinkdata=16030">Ryan Showman</a> said. "We were really effective for three lock-down quarters, holding a really good offensive team under 40 percent."

Bellevue shot 52 percent in the first quarter but went just 15 of 49 (30.6 percent) the rest of the game.

The Bruins led 23-12 with just over a minute left in the first quarter when things started coming together for the Coyotes. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ee08d364-0a2f-4b1d-8f18-be9d2142a211?elinkdata=16030">Jill Stephens</a> was fouled on a 3-point attempt and sank all three free throws and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/b6b4a37b-e3d6-42bc-8e8e-2d124a02d423?elinkdata=16030">Odessa Ozuna</a> buried another triple with 24 seconds in the quarter to cut the different to five after 10 minutes.

"You could just tell, we wanted to win this game and that's a really good team over there," Showman said. "They're going to win some games in their league (North Star) and do some things in January and February and we knew that and we talked about it, but for a majority of the game we were the better team."

The Coyotes cut the lead to three on free throws by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/845efe00-478b-4b7c-81b0-d20eab634c37?elinkdata=16030">LaMyah Ricks</a> to start the second quarter, but Bellevue built an eight-point cushion again at 30-22 with 6:29 to go in the half.

Here came the Coyotes after that. A three by Stephens started the Wesleyan run as four straight points by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/9234da29-16a0-411e-9d4c-153fb5b310fb?elinkdata=16030">Hampton Williams</a> cut the difference to a point and free throws by Ricks with 4:04 to go put Wesleyan on top 31-30.

Triples by Stephens and Ricks and then buckets by Ozuna and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/07c18b56-1290-4825-8c07-40d6aa055fd0?elinkdata=16030">Angel Lee</a> closed the quarter as KWU used a 19-2 run to finish the half and lead 41-32 at the break.

Showman was particularly pleased with the play of <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/07ca4a5e-0f4b-4c96-b850-d2916083f7a0?elinkdata=16030">Hampton Williams</a> in the post, who had to step up and play down low due to foul trouble and shorthandedness for the Coyotes.

"<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d412cf59-ac73-4d80-9844-93bd06b59814?elinkdata=16030">Hampton Williams</a> was great having to go up against players bigger and taller than her," Showman said. "She went toe-to-toe with them and battled every play. 10 points and nine rebounds for her is a great night having to step up and battle in the post."

Wesleyan pulled away more in the third quarter, pushing the lead out to 17 points with 5:16 to go on a bucket by Lee. A later three by Ozuna and a Ricks bucket pushed the lead to 20 for the first time at 59-39 with 3:08 left in the third.

The Coyotes led 66-45 after three quarters.

The lead hovered around 20 for the entire fourth quarter as the Coyotes slowed things down and played ball control, with most possessions ending positively for the Coyotes.

Stephens led the way with 19 points and had four rebounds for the Coyotes. Four others hit double figures as Ozuna had 17, Ricks 12, and Lee and Williams 10 each. KWU was 27 of 57 from the field for 47.4 percent from the game, and were phenomenal at the free throw line going 15 of 16. Williams led the Coyotes with nine rebounds and Ricks had eight.

"You're seeing a team come together and find its identity. It's really fun as a head coach to see," Showman said.
