Police are looking for a driver who fled the scene of a collision in south Salina Monday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a westbound two-door gray Mazda struck a westbound 2020 Ford Explorer in the 300 block of W. Schilling Road near the entrance to Walmart. Both drivers stopped to check for damage, but when Sherry Dillion, 76, of Salina, said she was going to call the police, the driver of the Mazda fled the scene.

The driver of the Mazda was described as being a white male about 50 years of age who was wearing a gray t-shirt and white shorts, Forrester said. 

Dillion's Explorer sustained scrapes on the driver's side.

Vehicles collide; one driver flees when other driver says she's calling police

A Salina man is in a Wichita hospital after a motorcycle he was driving struck a deer east of Salina Monday evening.

Michiel Unrein, 53, of Salina, was westbound in the 8800 block of Country Club Road at approximately 7:15 p.m. Monday when a deer entered the roadway in front of him, Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Ascher said this morning. 

The 2021 Kawasaki Vulcan that Unrein was driving struck the deer and went into the ditch, where it struck the embankment of a field entrance. The impact launched the motorcycle and Unrein into the air. They came to rest approximately 50 feet away in a field, Ascher said.

Another motorist witnessed the crash, stopped to help, and notified first responders, according to Ascher.

Unrein suffered critical injuries and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. He later was transfered to Wesley Medical Center, Ascher said.

Ascher urged motorists to be especially vigilant for deer crossing roadways this time of year due to mating season or "rut," which is just beginning.

"Every year, around this time, the sheriff’s office sees an increase in vehicle vs. deer collisions.  We urge motorists to slow down and pay extra attention, especially at dawn and dusk," Ascher noted.

MANHATTAN — Twelve Kansas State University students have been selected to join the&nbsp;<a href="https://lib.k-state.edu/about/support-the-libraries/student-ambassadors/" target="_blank">K-State Libraries Student Ambassadors</a>. The ambassadors help promote and advocate for all libraries, including Hale Library. The new ambassadors will serve two-year terms as representatives for K-State Libraries at social, cultural and recruitment activities. They join 21 students currently serving as ambassadors. The ambassadors provide valuable feedback on K-State Libraries' initiatives and services, as well as advocate for the perspectives of the larger university student body. The ambassador program provides students with leadership skills and the opportunity to make a positive impact at the university. Salinan among KSU students promoting libraries, educating peers

CONCORDIA - A Concordia native will discuss his travels in Africa&nbsp;during an upcoming Cook Series program at Cloud County Community College.

Nelsen Petersen is scheduled to discuss his travels in Africa in conjunction with his new book, Selfies with Livingstone . . . I Presume!, on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in Cook Theatre on the Concordia campus of Cloud County Community College. Petersen's presentation is the first 2021-2022 Cook Series event sponsored by the college. A book signing and reception is scheduled to follow his presentation.

Petersen, a Concordia native, is a writer, speaker, and historian based in Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp; His first book, Selfies with Sacajawea, details his modern-day following of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery expedition from Missouri to the Pacific Northwest in the early 1800s.&nbsp; His latest book, Selfies with Livingstone . . . I Presume! recounts his 24-day journey through Tanzania and Zambia where in 1871 Henry Morton Stanley searched for the missing – and presumed dead – Dr. David Livingstone, an English missionary and explorer.&nbsp;

Petersen and his traveling companion, Victoria Nikonenko, a Ukrainian journalist, embark on a journey and find the continent that most people don’t know about, including “Africa’s most valuable resource, its people.” Along the way, he experiences the frustrations and joys of traveling by foot, bus, and train, the harsh conditions for the inhabitants of these African countries and tourists alike, and the exquisite beauty of the African landscape. As described on the book’s cover, “It’s a story of adventure and friendships in the heart of Africa.”

This year marks the 29th year of the Charles and Marian Cook Series at Cloud County Community College. The Cooks were travelers who wanted to bring the world to those who could not travel themselves. More than 75 events have been presented through the sponsorship of the Cook Foundation and the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences and Business at Cloud. It was always Marian Cook’s wishes that all Cook Series events be free and open to the public.

WICHITA –&nbsp;The American Red Cross continues to experience an emergency blood shortage that has caused the blood supply to drop to the lowest post-summer level in at least six years.

With less than a day’s supply of certain blood types in recent weeks, the Red Cross asks donors of all blood types – especially type O − to make an appointment&nbsp;to give blood as soon as possible to ensure patients can receive the lifesaving transfusions they rely on. Blood donations help those with breast cancer

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Red Cross is reminding donors of the importance of blood to those undergoing treatment.&nbsp;According to the National Cancer Institute, roughly 1.9 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. this year, and more than 281,000 of those individuals will have breast cancer.

Patients with breast cancer and other cancers may need blood products on a regular basis during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications. In fact, nearly 25% of the blood supply is used by cancer patients.&nbsp;

People across the country depend on the kindness of blood donors. Donors are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting <a href="http://RedCrossBlood.org">RedCrossBlood.org</a> or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-73-2767).

To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification that are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.

At a time when health information has never been more important, the Red Cross is screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help patients with sickle cell disease&nbsp;who require trait-negative blood.&nbsp;Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donors can expect to receive sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at <a href="http://RedCrossBlood.org">RedCrossBlood.org</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Music teachers from Salina and Chapman have been named Outstanding Teachers by the North Central Kansas Music Educators Association.

Salina's Jenna Eshleman is the 2021-22 Outstanding Elementary Teacher and Chapman's Angeline McGuffin is the 2021-22 Outstanding High School Teacher.

Jenna Eshleman, Outstanding Elementary Teacher

Jenna Eshleman is the proud K-5 general music teacher at Meadowlark Ridge Elementary school in Salina. 

Originally from Geneseo, she earned her undergraduate degree in music education from Kansas Wesleyan University, and her Master of Music Performance degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. 

She has been happily teaching music since 2010, and also serves as the Youth Choir Director for the Salina Symphony's Youth Education program. She is a member of KMEA, NAfME, Kansas Orff Chapter, AOSA, and NEA and has completed two Orff levels. 

Eshleman is an active performer and enjoys leading others in worship weekly at her church, Trinity United Methodist. Eshleman was a featured soloist with the Salina Symphony in 2016, is a frequent music adjudicator, and enjoys a full private studio schedule. 

Eshleman's true passion in life is the love of her family; husband Stuart, and son Benjamin!

Angeline McGuffin, Outstanding High School Teacher

Angeline McGuffin currently teaches 7-12th grade vocal music in Chapman. 

McGuffin received her master's degree in choral conducting with emphasis on voice from University of North Texas and her undergraduate degrees from Arkansas Tech University: a BA in K-12 music education and a BA in vocal music. 

McGuffin has taught for over 20 years in Arkansas, Ohio, Texas, and Kansas. During her tenure in Texas and Ohio, she enjoyed professional singing as a soloist, cantor, and chorister in churches, with orchestras, and professional choirs such as Vocal Arts Ensemble, Texas Choral Artists and Faburden. McGuffin considers herself a teacher through and through and feels that her prior experience with professional singing enhances her classroom instruction. 

McGuffin has enjoyed every minute of the last eight years she has spent teaching at Chapman. Her choirs have consistently received I Superior ratings at state large ensemble competitions and her students have distinguished themselves by outstanding participation in district and state honor choirs. Her students are her joy, and she looks forward to making music with them every day. 

To her, teaching is more than a profession, it is a calling. She is proud to be a part of a singing state like Kansas and a wonderful education community such as Chapman where she is treated like family. 

She is happily married to Kyle McGuffin and owes him a great debt of gratitude for his continuing help and support. McGuffin has two grown children, Nathan and Jon, and she is pleased to say that they are the most talented musicians in the family!

During their meeting Tuesday, commissioners are scheduled to consider authorizing the Guaranteed Maximum Price No. 1 contract amendment and groundbreaking for the new Saline County Jail.

"Traditionally, in a Construction Manager at Risk delivery method, the entire project is guaranteed to be delivered at one fixed price (the Guaranteed Maximum Price). However, because of the complexity of the jail/Sheriff's Office project and the long lead times for delivery of certain materials in the current construction environment, this project will actually consist of two separate Guaranteed Maximum Price contract amendments," County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes explained in commission meeting packet information.

The first Guaranteed Maximum Price contract amendment that the commission is scheduled to consider Tuesday includes earthwork, utilities, building concrete, pre-cast cells, pre-cast concrete panels, detention equipment, and structural steel.

If the first contract amendment is approved Tuesday by the commission, construction on the new jail is scheduled to begin on Nov. 17 and be completed on Sept. 25, 2021.

According to information from Turner Construction, the company hired by the county for construction manager at risk services for the jail project, the total of the Guaranteed Maximum Price No. 1 contract amendment would be $25,035,500.

"Creating the GMP took months of planning and preparation through meetings, project document reviews, multiple estimates and special studies reviewed by the team of Turner, TreanorHL, Saline County and Sheriff’s Office. We also included many local and regional vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors in the process," Dave Dudzik, of Turner Construction, wrote in a letter to commissioners that accompanies the proposed contract amendment.

During Tuesday's meeting, commissioners also are scheduled to hear a presentation about the Stepping Up Initiative, a national program to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses who are in jail. 

Other items on the county commission agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Hear a pre-trial stats update from Andrew Pellant, community corrections pre-trial program coordinator.

●Hear an emergency management update from Michelle Barkley, emergency management director.

Rainfall varies across the area

Police are investigating the theft of a 40-foot recreational vehicle from a north Salina business late last week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 8 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday, someone stole a 2001 Holiday Rambler Endeavor from a business in the 200 block of E. Pacific Avenue. The RV, belonging to a 40-year-old Wichita man, was at the business for repairs. 

The owner of the business told police that the RV was there when he left at 8 p.m. Thursday, but gone when he returned the next morning, Forrester said. 

The RV was described as being 40-foot long, white with gold, blue, and brown stripes. It was valued at $11,000.

A Salina man is missing approximately $10,000 worth of tools and a toolbox after a garage he owns in north Salina was burglarized late last week.

The 41-year-old Salina man told police that his son drove by the property in the 1000 block of E. Elm Street on Saturday and noticed that the door to the detatched garage was open, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Missing from the garage were a red Mac Tools toolbox, valued at $3,000, with multiple Snap-on and Mac tools inside. Total loss was estimated at approximately $10,000.

A witness told police that on Friday a large black truck was backed into the driveway of the property, Forrester said.

Police are gathering surveillance video from neighborhood security cameras, he said.

“I don’t need to learn no science. If I have a science problem, I can just hire a scientist!” That is an occasional response an American teacher may encounter from rich foreign students when teaching at an American school—perhaps in Central or South America, or in the Middle East.&nbsp; It is an attitude of the privileged wealthy. If you have money, you don’t need to waste time on learning. Just hire the educated specialist you need. Only those few will need to study science.

But this fallacy has likewise driven American school curriculum across these last forty years, a time where each new generation has a lesser likelihood of having a better life than their parents. The science curriculum has declined in the U.S. while the rest of the developed world has moved ahead of us. And now the pandemic has revealed our lack of widespread science literacy.

The AAAS science society had long promoted a “Less Science, Not More” philosophy and the teaching of a minimal “Science for All Americans.” Ed Schools have likewise promoted teaching a bogus “scientific method” since there is just too much science to learn. So just learn to think like a scientist and apply the method. Our scores on international science tests declined.

But there was one indicator that seemed to tell us that science education in the United States was just fine: we claimed lots of Nobel Prizes this time each year. But this is the same mistake described above. We have been hiring away scientists educated in other countries and claiming them as our own. This gives the impression that our K-12 educational system is one of the best in the world for producing scientists. It is a false impression, and this year’s awards show this problem again. The U.S. will claim four Nobel Award winners in science. But only one was K-12 educated in the United States.

That would be David Julius, who was one of two awardees for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He was born in New York in 1955 and works at the University of California in San Francisco. But we will also claim the other awardee Ardem Patapoutian who works at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Scripps Research, in La Jolla, California. But he was born in 1967 in Beirut, Lebanon. Their prize was “for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.”

We will likewise claim David W.C. MacMillan who is now working at Princeton University in New Jersey. But he was born in 1968 in Bellshill in the United Kingdom. He shares the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Benjamin List who is Director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung and was born in Frankfurt, Germany, for work on “the development of asymmetric organocatalysis.”

The Nobel Prize for Physics this year was distributed among three researchers. One-half went to Giorgio Parisi born in 1948 in Rome, Italy and now at Sapienza University of Rome. His work was on “the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”

The other half of the prize was awarded jointly to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann for work in “the physical modeling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming.”&nbsp; Syukuro Manabe was born in 1931 in Shingu in Japan but is currently at Princeton University in New Jersey. So we can expect the U.S. to take credit. Klaus Hasselmann, born in 1931 in Hamburg Germany, is at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg.

So the U.S., similar to rich foreign students, is able to disregard providing a richer science education and rely on hiring away scientists trained in other countries that value more science. But now other countries also offer state-of-the-art research equipment, often surpassing the United States.

And note the dates of birth. It takes a long time for the value of new science to be confirmed by a Nobel Award. Our education of just one out of these seven indicates that long ago we indeed did have some schools that did stimulate at least a few American students to pursue careers in science. Today, the proportion of U.S. K–12 schools that offer advanced science coursework is very small. Meanwhile the science literacy of the younger public in other developed countries has moved far beyond us. Unless there is a dramatic increase in science taught in American public schools, the U.S. will move from being near the bottom of developed countries, to joining the undeveloped countries.&nbsp;&nbsp;
