Saline County: 3 deaths, 95 new COVID-19 cases since Friday

MANHATTAN – A Kansas 4-H official says the state’s largest youth organization has set the stage for another successful year with a series of videos aimed to train an army of volunteers.&nbsp;

Shane Potter, a 4-H youth development specialist, said the videos –&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/volunteers/project-leaders/index.html" target="_blank">stored online and free to view</a>&nbsp;– are intended to “help keep youth engaged” in many of the approximately three dozen projects that youth participate in each year.&nbsp;

“When we put this video series together, we wanted it to serve as a starting point for those who volunteer for their local 4-H clubs,” Potter said.&nbsp;

He added that the videos teach skills that volunteers can use when guiding youth through such areas as public speaking, STEM lessons, family and consumer sciences, animal sciences, service learning and more.&nbsp;

The videos were first offered in September and continue through the middle of October, but will be archived for viewing anytime.&nbsp;

“We offered the lessons virtually, so we were able to include experts from many states…Missouri, Michigan, Nebraska and all around Kansas,” Potter said. “They were able to provide their particular expertise so that when volunteers go back to work with youth, they have the best content we could find to help them engage youth in their projects.”&nbsp;

In Kansas, approximately 5,000 adults and 5,500 youth volunteer for 4-H programs,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/about/statistics/index.html" target="_blank">according to data from the Kansas 4-H youth development office</a>. In 2019, more than 17,000 Kansas youth were enrolled as club members and took part in at least one 4-H project.&nbsp;

“This year, we are looking at how we can help youth find that ‘spark,’” Potter said. “In the videos, we focused on looking at those activities that could help youth have a spark so that they fully engage in that content area.”&nbsp;

As an example, Potter noted a textiles lessons that incorporated the science involved in designing clothes.&nbsp;

“We had a speaker who wrote a national curriculum about how they’re applying scientific principles into their everyday decisions in creating textiles,” he said. “They were able to talk about the functional properties of textiles and the fabrics that they are using.”&nbsp;

LINCOLN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a reported shooting on Interstate 70 in Lincoln County.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, authorities were advised of a possible shooting near the&nbsp;Beverly/&nbsp;Carneiro&nbsp;exit on Interstate 70, according to a media release.

Officers from the Kansas Highway Patrol and Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded and deputies from Lincoln County located a man in his 50s with a gunshot wound to his stomach, according to the release.

EMS transported the victim to Salina Regional Health Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Authorities released no additional details Wednesday afternoon.

These grants will be dispersed to 10 communities across Kansas, including the City of Salina, according to information from Moran's office.

“As crime rates are increasing, these grants will fund the purchase of new equipment, development of outreach programs and update outdated technology to help our local law enforcement carry out their responsibilities to protect our communities,”&nbsp;said Moran. “Through my role as the lead Republican on the subcommittee that funds these grants, I am working to make certain we provide every officer, captain, lieutenant, chief and sheriff with the resources they need to fulfill their duties.”

KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system due to a waterline break. Failure to maintain pressure can lead to a loss of chlorine residual levels and may result in bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Storms roll through overnight bringing rain, wind to area

Police are looking for four males who allegedly beat and robbed a Salina man in a local park Tuesday night.

A 28-year-old Salina man told police that he was at the shelter near the train in Kenwood Park at approximately 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was approached by a White male who asked him whether he was in the park earlier causing problems, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The person acted as if he wanted to fight. Suddenly another White male and two Black males appeared and the four of them began beating up the 28-year-old Salina man, Forrester said. All four were believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, he added.

They pulled off the man's hoodie, which held his cellphone, and fled with both the hoodie and the phone, Forrester said. The cellphone was a Nuu brand phone valued at $70.

Forrester said the 28-year-old had injuries consistent with what he had reported, including a lasceration above his right eye, scrapes on his knees, and abrasions on his lower front torso and upper back.

Salina man beaten, robbed in Kenwood Park Tuesday night

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of a motorcycle from a garage in the northwest part of the county.

Kyle Hughes, 30, reported that sometime between 5:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and 5:30 p.m. Monday, someone stole his black 2017 RPS Hawk 250 motorcycle from a garage at a residence in the 3900 block of W. Lockard Road, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. The motorcycle, valued at $1,500, had a Kansas license plate of 35EJK. 

The key was with the motorcycle and the garage was unlocked, Melander said.

Motorcycle tracks were found leading from the garage to a nearby field, he added.

Police are looking for someone named David who is believed to have stolen a pickup from behind a building in north Salina Monday.

Leroy Schmidt, 83, of Salina, reported that sometime between 1-7 p.m. Monday, someone stole his white 2000 extended cab Chevrolet Silverado 1500 from behind a building he owns in the 700 block of N. Broadway Boulevard, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The pickup, valued at $6,000 had a Kansas license plate of 788HGV.

Schmidt still has the keys for the pickup, Forrester said.

A witness told police that he caught someone named David attempting to enter the rear of Schmidt's building during the time period that the pickup was stolen, Forrester said. The intruder fled. No description of the person named David was provided.

ABILENE - Memorial Health System in Abilene has announced that Kimmy Hinman, M.D., has joined the medical staff of Heartland Health Care Clinic.

Hinman is a 2018 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. While there, she was inducted to the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2017, awarded the Monte Maska MD Family Medicine Scholarship, and received the Jaydoc Community Clinic M4 Volunteer award. In June of 2021, Hinman completed her residency from Indiana at IU Ball Memorial Family Medicine Residency and soon after, she packed her bags and moved to Abilene!

Hinman said, “I am really enjoying Abilene as my new home and feel so lucky to have moved here. I love being able to walk through town, gaze at the beautiful houses, and meet lots of friendly, welcoming folks along the way. There are also so many fun events that I’ve been able to enjoy, with some COVID distancing of course! I’m excited to keep discovering the beauty of this town and community.”

When Hinman was asked what drives her to be the kind of doctor she strives to be she said, “This job is wonderful because of the people. I have the opportunity to get to know my patients and see them across many years and experiences through their life. I am grateful for the chance to care for others and help in achieving their goals for their wellness.”

My grandparents received exactly one paycheck per year, usually in mid-August when they took calves to market. I was probably 5 or 6 years old the first time I got to go to the sale and sit in the grandstand as the cattle were auctioned off in lots. I don’t remember much from the sale, other than the auctioneer’s cadence was pleasing even if it didn’t make much sense to me. It was the conversation with my grandparents as we were leaving the parking lot that’s stayed with me. It was a good year, and my grandmother said she’d picked up a nice check at the cashier’s office. Upon hearing the word check, the most obvious question spilled forth from my mouth. “How much was it?” I asked. My grandfather stared at the road while my grandmother flatly stated, “We don’t talk about money.” End of conversation. I accompanied my grandparents to lots of sales over the next several years, and the routine was always the same. We’d go to the auction, stop at a restaurant on the way home and, in the good years, I’d come home with a new pair of boots. True to my grandmother’s word, we never talked about money. Years of careful observation eventually allowed me to decipher the general workings of the business side, even if I lacked access to the actual accounting of dollars and cents. By the time I was a teenager, I generally understood the success of the ranch depended on a delicate balance of controlling expenses in down years and setting something aside in the good ones. This all has been running through my mind lately after seeing a consumer post on social media believing ranchers have it easy because their only outlays are minimal, just some mineral and vaccines. He believed grass was free. A couple of questions popped into my mind when I saw that. One, where can one find this free grass? Two, how much does the average consumer know about the business side of agriculture? I know the answer to the first, and I suspect the answer to the second question would scare me. One of the biggest misconceptions about the business of agriculture is that corporations are taking over and displacing family farms. There’s no doubt there are some large corporate farms, but the rise in corporations is driven primarily by family farms and ranches. These are still mom and pop operations choosing to incorporate for any number of reasons, from liability protection and enhanced management to transition and tax planning. It’s a recognition of what’s always been true — agriculture is a business and those who grow our food are its leaders. We tend to gloss over those facts by calling farming and ranching a lifestyle. While it’s undoubtedly true, it also obscures some of the most difficult work those in agriculture do. To grow a crop or raise livestock requires an extensive set of skills, ranging from finance and marketing to logistics and recordkeeping. Even with managing what they can control, farmers and ranchers are still at the mercy of markets and Mother Nature. Those are tough partners, thankfully our food in in the hands of business professionals.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and Child Advocacy and Parenting Services (CAPS) is doing its part to spread awareness of the need to replace bullying behavior with kindness.

CAPS is home to the Bullying Prevention education program that visits elementary and middle school classes in the surrounding area. 

<a href="http://Stopbullying.gov">Stopbullying.gov</a> reports bullying prevention approaches that involve the entire school community show the most promise in creating spaces of safety and respect.

CAPS Bullying Prevention uses strategies to strengthen targets and witnesses to use their power to end bullying. The goal is to empower students to use empathy and reconciliatory justice with their peers. CAPS Bullying Prevention encourages youth to replace bullying with positive behaviors and actions.

Additionally, CAPS is joining forces with DVACK for a Speak Night at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Participants can speak out against bullying and violence with a story, poetry, song or other five-minute performance. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, one out of every five students reported being bullied either in person or online in 2019. The 2021 Kansas Communities That Care Survey data showed a rise in cyberbullying among Kansas students during the 2020-2021 school year. Students who experience bullying are at an increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation or difficulties and lower academic performance (Center for Disease Control, 2019). The effects of bullying on all youth, including those who bully others and those who witness bullying, may continue into adulthood.

The 2021 Kansas Communities That Care Survey data showed a rise in cyberbullying among Kansas students during the 2020-2021 school year. Students who experience bullying are at an increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation or difficulties and lower academic performance (Center for Disease Control, 2019). The effects of bullying on all youth, including those who bully others and those who witness bullying, may continue into adulthood.

Today in History - Oct. 13

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) – Two people from New Mexico were killed Tuesday when a small plane crashed in a wooded area near a suburban Milwaukee neighborhood.

The National Transportation Safety Board tweeted about 12:30 p.m. that a GlaStar aircraft crashed near Waukesha.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office later reported that the plane went down in the Village of Waukesha, which lies just to the south of the city of Waukesha.

Both people aboard were killed, the sheriff’s office said.

Federal Aviation Administration officials told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the plane took off from Lawrence J. Timmerman Airport in Milwaukee and was headed to Salina Regional Airport in Salina, Kansas, when it went down at 9:35 a.m.

2 dead after small plane flying to Salina crashed in rural Wisconsin

The City of Salina has announced crack sealing work this week.

In a news release issued today, the city announced the following crack sealing projects for the week, weather permitting.

Residents will be asked to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and costeffective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and costeffectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

Approximately 31 centerline miles of streets will be sealed in 2021.

The $460,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

Two minor earthquakes shook parts of Saline and Dickinson counties this morning.

A magnitude 2 earthquake struck at 7:48 a.m. Tuesday just northwest of Assaria, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The quake was centered north of Assaria Road between S. Old U.S. 81 Highway and Interstate 135.

Then, a magnitude 2.7 quake struck at 11:23 a.m. Tuesday southeast of Solomon in Dickinson County, the Kansas Geological Survey reported. The quake was centered south of Old Highway 40 between Barn Road and Camp Road.

The Kansas Wesleyan University Alumni Association has selected its annual award winners, individuals who bring particular honor to KWU. 

The recognition of these distinguished alumni and friends will take place from 12:45-2 p.m. on Saturday as part of KWU’s Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The Alumni Achievement Award winner is Olga Silverman ’13.&nbsp;Silverman is an English Studies scholar and educator, a champion Debate and Forensics coach and a 2015 Kansas Horizon Award winner. Born and raised in Riga, Latvia, she completed a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Latvia. In her second career, she received her B.A. in English and Secondary Education from Kansas Wesleyan and an M.S.E. in Curriculum Instruction from the University of Kansas. She currently resides in Salina with her husband, David, and their daughter, Stepha.

The Alumni Service Award winner is&nbsp;Gustaf (Gus)&nbsp;Applequist ’14.&nbsp;A native of Salina, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Management at KWU. Gus met his wife, Hannah&nbsp;’16, through their mutual love of music at KWU. After graduating, Gus worked for several years in manufacturing, followed by three years running a retail business and bakery. In 2019, Gus started Fili Creative, a media production business based in Salina. Gus is an active musician, playing the double and electric bass in the Salina Symphony, Salina Community Theatre and the band, Everyday Lights. Gus serves on the boards of the Salina Symphony, the Friends of the River Project, Covenant Cedars Bible Camp (Hordeville, Neb.) and the KWU Foundation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Young Alumna Award recipient is Hannah Holt ’14, G’16.&nbsp;Holt is the current promotions director at Meridian Media and an on-air personality on Y93.7, as well as an account executive for the company. She co-hosts the Y Wake Up Show with Chad Allen, and enjoys bringing a smile to faces during morning commutes. During her time in Salina, Hannah has been a voice and volunteer for organizations like the Salina Area United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Greater Salina Community Foundation and the Love, Chloe Foundation. She has remained an active member of the KWU community by being the PA announcer for Coyote volleyball, helping at basketball games, providing internship opportunities for Kansas Wesleyan students, attending Coaches’ Luncheons and her favorite KWU event, Night with the Yotes. Hannah met her husband, Garrett Young ’15, G’18 in Wilson Hall while attending college, and the two were married in Sams Chapel in 2018.

Dr. Scott and Annie Boswell are the Alumni by Choice recipients.&nbsp;Scott grew up in Olathe and is a neurosurgeon at Salina Regional Health Center. Annie was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico but moved to the states in 2003 to start a family with Scott. She is a cardiovascular nurse by trade, but she has worked as a full-time volunteer for Kansas Wesleyan for the last seven years. Annie’s involvement in KWU is broad. She has been the host family coordinator and a team mom for the men’s soccer team since 2015. She currently works as a Campus Ministries staff/volunteer, leading women’s Bible studies as well as one-on-one discipleship and mentoring sessions with students. She is the founder and leader of the “Breaking Bread” fellowship ministry for students in partnership with First Southern Baptist Church and University United Methodist Church in Salina. Annie is also the chaplain for the softball team. Lastly, Annie is a Hispanic/Latin American community — and student — liaison, supporting KWU’s goal of embracing diversity and promoting inclusion, as well as ensuring that Hispanic and Latin American students have all the support they need to graduate and an enriching journey at KWU. Annie is a current member of the KWU Foundation board.
