And just like that, cold weather is upon us! 

The coldest temperatures of the fall, so far, are expected across the region tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Low temperatures tonight will range from 35 to 40 degrees. Patchy frost is possible across central Kansas.

Additionally, frost advisories have been issued.

UPDATE: Cold temps tonight; frost advisories issued

The City of Salina announced this morning that fiber optic line placement is continuing along S. Ohio Street.

Eli Drilling will continue placing Bluebird underground fiber optic lines on the west side of S. Ohio Street south of E. Crawford Street down to Belmont Boulevard.

Work will be in grass areas with minimal sidewalk closures. No road closures are expected at this time.

The fiber optic cabling and related facilities will connect existing cell towers and future 5G cell towers providing exceptional cell service and high speed networks.

Work is this area will continue until Oct. 22.

Fiber optic line placement continues along S. Ohio

CLOUD COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Cloud County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Ford F150 driven by Damon J. Beckman, 20, Concordia, was northbound on 210th Road five miles east of Concordia. The pickup left the roadway, entered the east ditch and rolled.

Beckman was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Chaput-Bouy Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann stopped in Salina Monday during his district manufacturing tour.

Mann was visiting locally owned businesses in the Big First to learn more about what they produce and to find out how he can best serve them, according to information from Mann's office. 

He made eight stops during his week and a half tour. While in Salina on Monday, he visited Vortex and Exline, Inc.

I am on Baby Step 2, and I started a YouTube channel earlier this year that led to a new opportunity to make additional income. I try on and review clothing, and I’m paid $30 for each clip that’s anywhere from 30 seconds to two minutes long. Right now, I have about 1,000 viewers. This requires me to buy items from several brands. I usually return the items when I’m through filming, but I’m currently funding this with a credit card I only use for this project. I only pay the minimum each month until I get the refund, so at any given time there can be up to $4,000 on the card in rotation. I make about $86,000 at my normal job, so is this an okay way to fund my project and chalk it up as a business expense?

You’re taking a risk here, from a business perspective, by playing around with $4,000&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">in debt</a>&nbsp;to make $30 a pop. That’s inordinate. And you shouldn’t be paying for the clothes in the first place. These brands should be&nbsp;giving&nbsp;you clothes to review—that you keep—for the marketing exposure, but I’m not sure you’ve got enough eyeballs on you yet to justify them giving you the clothes for free.

Basically, it sounds like you’re trying to put yourself in a position to be an influencer. And the way influencers get paid is by monetizing eyeballs. Obviously, YouTube and other platforms will pay you if you can get the eyeballs. But 1,000 viewers really aren’t a lot these days. You’re getting there, though, and I’m glad you’re working at it and trying to make things happen.

There are three things you can always be sure of in business. One, it’s going to cost twice as much as you think it will. Two, it’s going to take twice as long as you think it will. And three,&nbsp;you&nbsp;are not the exception to these things. On Oct. 9, officers with the Salina Police Department investigated a residential burglary that occurred in the 1000 block of E. Elm Street. The burglary occurred between 1:30 p.m. Oct. 7&nbsp;through 8 a.m. Oct. 9.

The victim said items were stolen from a detached garage, and were valued at $10,000. Items taken were a red Mac Tool toolbox with wheels containing multiple Snap-On and Mac Tools.

County closing part of E. Cloud Friday for culvert work

The first tiger cubs born at Rolling Hills Zoo will be relocating to their new homes in the next few weeks. 

Sasha will be moving to Bramble Zoo in Watertown, S.D., while Nadya is going to Dakota Zoo in Bismark, N.D. Now two years old, separation from the family unit naturally occurs in the wild at their age.

Born to Andrea on Aug. 14, 2019, and sired by Dhenuka, the cubs weighed less than 8 lbs. at birth. Now weighing 260 lbs. each, they are almost the same weight as their mother who weighs 300 lbs.

Once they reach sexual maturity at four years old, Sasha and Nadya will be recommended for future breeding by the Species Survival Plan (SSP) – which is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, of which RHZ is an accredited member.

As of 2020, there were 107 tigers (42 males and 65 females) at 47 institutions in the U.S. and Canada, with this pair being the only successful Amur cub births of 2019. For that reason, their breeding is vitally important for the SSP population.

“It’s been a lot of fun watching these girls grow, and learning their personalities,” commented Brenda Gunder, RHZ Curator. “While it is sad to see them leave we are proud of our contribution to the SSP population and look forward to watching them mature at their new homes.”

Conservation status: The Amur tiger is found primarily in the Russian Far East. Just in the past one hundred years four of the nine subspecies (Bali, Caspian, Javan, and South China tigers) have all disappeared in the wild. Amur, Sumatran, and Malayan tigers are all thought to number fewer than 500 individuals in the wild.

The wild population fell to less than 20-30 animals in the 1930s, contributing to the low genetic variation found in this population. Population growth in recent decades led to its reclassification from Critically Endangered to Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2007. Poaching of tigers and their prey are the primary threat to this population, with habitat loss, tiger-human conflicts, and infectious diseases posing as threats as well.

Rolling Hills Zoo's tiger cubs heading north soon

The City of Salina today announced that Jeff Hammond has been appointed interim director of Parks &amp; Recreation.

He will assume his interim duties in November, according to a news release issued by the city this afternoon.

The appointment was made necessary by current Salina Parks &amp; Recreation Director Chris Cotten’s recent appointment as the director of parks and recreation for the City of Kansas City, Mo.

“I sincerely congratulate Chris on his new role in Kansas City, Missouri, and I wish him well with his next endeavor. Our Parks and Recreation Department has a lot of significant projects and opportunities underway, and we will do our best to maintain and build upon our current momentum," City Manager Mike Schrage said.

Schrage noted that the search process for a new director will begin immediately.

"I certainly appreciate Jeff’s willingness to serve as interim and look forward to working with him. Jeff’s knowledge and experience in general as well as his tenure with the City of Salina will be helpful as we move forward with a transition in leadership,” Schrage said.

Cotten began working for the City of Salina in July 2016. Hammond joined the city staff in November 2016.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the closing of part of Sunnyside Road for culvert work.

Sunnyside Road will be closed Thursday between W. Farrelly Road and Rollman Road for the replacement of a cross road drainage culvert. The work should be completed during the daytime hours with Sunnyside Road reopened by the end of the workday. 

Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies. Through traffic is asked to find alternate routes during construction.

Two churches are asking local residents to help give the gift of warmth.

Salina's Sunrise Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church are collecting new and clean, gently used coats to be distributed to those in need.

"If you would like to purchase coats to donate, we suggest that you purchase children's coats or children's socks and underwear," the churches noted in information provided to Salina Post.

Those wishing to donate items are asked to take them to Salina First Presbyterian Church by Wednesday. The church is located at 308 S. Eighth Street.

Distribution of the items will be during the Salina Coat Drive, scheduled for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 23 in Blair Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 308 S. Eighth Street.

If you have unused medications that you no longer need, you have multiple options for safely disposing of them. 

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Oct. 23 and the Saline County Sheriff's Office is partnering with Salina Regional Health Center for a drive-through drop-off location. Persons wishing to get rid of unneeded prescription drugs can drop them off in the circle drive at the main entrance of Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue, between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 23.

Additionally, the sheriff's office plans to have a second collection location at Dillons, 1235 E. Cloud Street from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 23.

If you're unable to make it to either location, you can drop off unused medications in the dropbox located in the lobby of the sheriff's office, 251 N. 10th Street, between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. On weekends, unused medications can be turned in anytime at the Saline County Jail visitation window. The jail entrance is located on the W. Elm Street/N. 12th Street side of the building.

The sheriff's office makes sure that all collected medications are safely disposed of.

WICHITA –&nbsp; A new AAA survey of Kansas first responders, including police, fire fighters, tow drivers&nbsp;and utility workers, sheds an alarming light on dangerous driving behaviors that have resulted, nationally, in hundreds of deaths at the roadside.

92% of Kansas first responders and other roadside workers polled* said they have had at least one near miss incident or felt their life threatened &nbsp;- with 24% saying it happens "routinely" - because motorists do not slow down or move over for those working along the roadside, despite the fact that Kansas law requires them to do so.

"Nationwide, an average of 24 first responders are killed every year while working along the roadside – that’s a tragic loss of life every other week," said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas. "AAA and our traffic safety partners pushed for passage of the Move Over law here in Kansas but, clearly, there is still work to be done to ensure the safety of any motorist disabled at the roadside and the first responders who come to their aid."

The AAA Poll of Kansas First Responders* found:

●Almost 60% percent of first responders including law enforcement, EMS, tow truck drivers and roadside workers say that, in their experience, Kansas motorists do NOT slow down and move over for those working along the side of the road

●50% of first responders say they do NOT feel more safe since the Move Over law was put in place

●92% say that they personally have been involved in a near miss incident or had their life threatened because a motorist failed to move over

●With 24% saying it happens ‘ROUTINELY’

The findings of the first responders’ poll are in sharp contrast to an earlier AAA poll of Kansas drivers – more than 96% of whom said that they do slow down for first responders at the roadside and 95% of whom said they move over a lane whenever safe to do so. But first responders say that is not what they are experiencing.

"Troopers across Kansas have noticed that drivers are not moving over when approaching and passing emergency vehicles and roadway maintenance vehicles," said Lieutenant Candice Breshears of the Kansas Highway Patrol. "First responders and roadway workers are dedicated to making our Kansas highways safer for everyone traveling in and through Kansas. Not only is it a Kansas law to move over, but it is also the courteous thing to do. We want everyone, including our first responders, to make it home safely to their families. Please do your part and Move Over and Slow Down for all roadway workers."

"All first responders should be able to do their jobs along the roads safely, without fear of being struck by a passing vehicle," said Kansas Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz. "Their service to the public is vital. Please follow the law and give these workers the respect they deserve – move over and slow down for everyone who works along the roadway."

Already this year, two AAA tow drivers have been killed while assisting motorists at the roadside - but it’s not just first responders who are at risk. Since 2015, more than 1,600 people have been struck and killed while outside of a disabled vehicle.

Some states have extended Move Over protections to include stranded motorists and everyone at the roadside.

"The goal is not just to make motorists aware of the law. The goal is to change driver behavior and put an end to these senseless tragedies," AAA Kansas’ Steward adds.

AAA: Kansas first responders sound alarm about deadly roadside risks

Statewide winners of two contests have been announced as part of the national safety campaign Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day.

FOR THE POSTER CONTEST&nbsp;– Annika Mick of Manhattan, Emma Kuhlman of Topeka, and Raynee Eddy of Inman are the statewide winners. Each student was selected as a regional winner and will receive a bicycle donated by the Kansas Turnpike Authority and a helmet donated by Safe Kids Kansas. A total of 638 Kansas kids ages 5 to 13 participated.

As statewide winners in their age categories, they will also receive a Kindle Fire tablet from the KTA, a $50 gift card from the Fuel True/Independent Energy and Convenience and movie passes from AAA Kansas. In addition to these prizes, the student’s school, class or booster club will receive $200.

FOR THE VIDEO CONTEST&nbsp;– Students from St. John – Hudson Tigers USD 350 won first place. They will receive first choice of a&nbsp;GoPro, a DJI Stabilizer and a DJI Drone,&nbsp;and the grand prize winner’s school, class or booster club will receive $500.

Two groups of students from Eudora Schools captured second and third place in the video contest. Each will receive one of the remaining prizes listed above. There was a total of 33 entries from teens across the state. McPherson County student among safety poster contest winners

On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Charles E. ("Chuck") Yeager became the first test pilot to break the sound barrier as he flew the experimental Bell XS-1 (later X-1) rocket plane over Muroc Dry Lake in California. 

In 1066, Normans under William the Conqueror defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings.

In 1586, Mary, Queen of Scots, went on trial in England, accused of committing treason against Queen Elizabeth I. (Mary was beheaded in February 1587.)

In 1933, Nazi Germany announced it was withdrawing from the League of Nations. 

In 1939, a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the HMS Royal Oak, a British battleship anchored at Scapa Flow in Scotland's Orkney Islands; 833 of the more than 1,200 men aboard were killed.
