Forecast looks promising for Kansas’ 2021 upland bird seasons

The airline pilot happened to be in Amsterdam but he had a question. He sent a text to a friend and asked, “When is the world’s fair?”&nbsp;&nbsp;The friend texted the dates in his reply.&nbsp;

The pilot said, “Good, I want to be sure I make it back to Kansas for it.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The self-proclaimed world’s fair to which he referred is a remarkable community fair in&nbsp;rural&nbsp;Kansas. &nbsp;

Last week we learned about a century-long collection of fair books. Those fair books were produced for the annual Kincaid Farmers Free Fair, known today as the Kincaid World’s Fair or Kincaid Free Fair for short. Gary Holloway is the president of the Kincaid fair board.&nbsp;

From newspaper accounts, it appears that the first Kincaid fair was held in 1907. “Of my grandparents, one was 8 (years old) and the other was 5 (at that time),” Gary said. It began as a Farmer’s Institute and corn growing contest, in an effort by local businessmen to attract attention and generate business from the railroad.&nbsp;

Since that time, the fair has been held every year, except when cancelled due to World War II and due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. This year, the fair theme is “110 years and going strong.”&nbsp;

Gary Holloway’s family was always involved in helping with the fair. He grew up on the farm near Kincaid, went away to college and worked in business before coming back to the farm. He and his wife raised two sons, one of whom went to K-State and is coming back to the farm with his family also. “My grandchildren will be the fifth generation to be involved with the fair,” Gary said.&nbsp;

The Kincaid fair, by the way, is separate from the Anderson County Fair which is held in July and at which 4-Hers qualify to go the state fair. The Kincaid fair was held in late September, after the state fair is over.&nbsp;

“Growing up, my brother and I always had two of every kind of livestock,” Gary said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“One we sold at the county fair and the other we saved for the Kincaid fair.”&nbsp;

As president of the fair board, Gary works with experienced volunteers. “Dozens of volunteers make this possible,” he said. “Everybody knows what to do at the fair and they just do it. There’s no egos.”&nbsp;

“We have to have stuff for kids to enjoy,” he said. When the tentatively-scheduled 2021 carnival company cancelled, the fair board arranged for multiple bounce houses to be available for kids every night.&nbsp;

The Kincaid Free Fair includes lots of exhibits and a remarkable set of related activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to the exhibit judging, there’s a kids cash grab, pedal tractor pull, bean feed, pony pull, cornhole tournament, pie baking contest, 5K run, antique farm machinery show, horseshoe pitching contest, horse show, voting for a fair queen, car show, barbecue smoke-off competition, and more. The annual parade has sometimes drawn as many as 4,000 people.&nbsp;

“We’ve had as many as eight marching bands in the parade from communities around the region,” Gary said. Thanks to sponsors, the entertainment is provided free to the public. “It’s called the free fair because we’ve never charged for entertainment,” Gary said.&nbsp;

Along the way, the fair began to be referred to as the world’s fair, and it brings people back to the community from all over. “This is the homecoming event that we come home to,” Gary said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

It’s amazing to find this in a&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community such as Kincaid, population 122 people.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

“This is a reunion,” Gary said. “These things were important to us growing up and we want our grandkids to have a great experience too.”&nbsp;

LINDSBORG - There's a new music ensemble in Lindsborg.

Bethany College recently announced the formation of the Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley. 

The ensemble is scheduled to perform its first concert at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Swedish Pavilion of the Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum. The concert will feature works by Richard Wagner, Frank Bridge, and Ludwig Beethoven. The concert is open to the public at no charge, however, donations are welcomed and encouraged.

Supported by one of Bethany College's Presidential Strategic Grants and further supported by the Lindsborg Arts Council, the chamber orchestra is an auditioned, regional ensemble of professional musicians that includes not only some Bethany faculty members, but musicians from Wichita, Salina, and Hutchinson as well. Seeking to educate and engage audience members through the performance of orchestral masterworks, the ensemble will be under the musical direction of Dr. Keith Dodson, assistant professor of music and director of instrumental studies, and led by Concertmaster Ann Samuelson, instructor of upper strings. 

While there are many symphonic orchestras in the central Kansas area, this ensemble is unique in terms of its smaller size. The size allows the group to create a level of intimacy in their performance and venues that creates a different concert experience from the large halls of symphonic orchestras.

The Friends of the Salina Public Library is hosting the Fantastic Fall Book Sale to culminate Friends of the Library Week. 

In recognition of the organization's support for the library, Salina Mayor Melissa Hodges proclaimed Oct. 17-23 as Friends of the Library week in Salina. The proclamation presented at Monday's City Commission meeting recognized the Friends work as the library is the cornerstone of the community in providing opportunities for all to engage in the joy of lifelong learning.

The organization act as a “booster club” for the library. Members raise funds to support summer reading programs, procure equipment for classes, assist with special programs, and provide scholarships for teen volunteers.

Friends Board President Mary Shaffer said that this book sale is one of the two really big book sales of the year.

Friday, from 4:30-7:30 p.m., will be a preview for Friends of the Salina Public Library members. The sale is open to public on Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. On Oct. 24 from 1-4 p.m., the public may purchase books for $5 a bag.

Laura Rhodenbaugh, Friends of the Salina Public Library board treasurer, said that they have a big variety of offerings—books, audio books, movies, music CDs, and games—all at really bargain prices. 

“If someone is a mystery or romance fan, then they are really in luck because we have hundreds of selections,” she said.

The books the organization prepares for the sales come from book withdrawn from the library collection and from public donations. Donations to the organization can be made during library hours—a donation box is right inside the front door of the library.

Anyone can become a member anytime--but during this special enrollment period, local merchants have given coupons and small prizes to encourage membership. Yearlong memberships are $5 for students, $10 for individuals, and $25 for families.

Advanced voting by mail has begun and voting at the Saline County Clerk's Office is scheduled to begin on Monday for the Nov. 2 general election.

If you would like to request an advanced ballot by mail, you have until Oct. 26 to apply. You can find an advanced ballot by mail application on the Saline County Election Office <a href="https://www.saline.org/Departments/Elections-Office">webpage</a> or the Kansas Secretary of State's Voter Information <a href="https://www.kssos.org/elections/voter-information.html">webpage</a>.

If you would like to vote in advance at the Saline County Clerks Office, you can do so beginning Monday. The office, room 215 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Additionally, the Saline County Clerk's Office will have special Saturday advanced voting hours on Oct. 30. You can vote that day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The First Amendment isn’t just lofty language.

For many Americans, including five we asked about it, it’s 45 words that they are living every day.

The Freedom Forum surveyed more than 3,000 people in late summer 2020 to find how their values and attitudes shape their feelings about the First Amendment. “<a href="http://www.whereamericastands.org/" target="_blank">The First Amendment: Where America Stands</a>” finds near-universal support that the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition are vital and essential today. We interviewed dozens of survey participants to get more insight into their thoughts about the First Amendment. Here are some thoughts from five of them.

Bora Kim&nbsp;emigrated to the United States from South Korea as a young girl. “I was coming from a country and a culture that I should say, maybe didn’t value or prioritize the freedom of expression or holding one’s own opinion as valued. So when I came to the States … being taught to really voice myself and to respect myself as an individual was really validating and … empowering.”

Today, Kim lives in New York City and advocates for artists and their right to free expression — an everyday extension of her First Amendment freedoms. “My work in supporting them is in a way allowing that freedom of speech and expression to be possible for these individuals.”

Eric Arroyo&nbsp;grew up using his freedoms of assembly and petition as a child of the ’60s fighting for civil rights, women’s rights and gay rights. “There was the youthful movement of saying, ‘This is wrong.’ Why can’t Blacks vote? Why must women be told what to do with their bodies? Why must you have Latinos and Asians … being treated as second-class citizens?”

“I marched, sat in, boycotted … all peacefully,” said Arroyo, now retired in the Bronx, N.Y., from economic development work. He worked for progressive candidates and tried to effect change. “Power was challenged, and unfortunately people were killed. And people sacrificed on behalf of that highest principle that we are in fact equal and should have equal access to the law.”

For&nbsp;Ruben Moreno&nbsp;of Tucson, Ariz., speech is his most valued freedom. “I’m a gay American, so I need to be able to express myself doing a Pride parade, during a job interview, for healthcare. It’s important that everybody, no matter who they are straight, gay, trans … that they are able to be who they are and speak their truth with their authentic selves. If that’s taken away, I mean, that’s a huge tragedy, not just for Americans, but for America.”

Raised in a fundamentalist faith, Moreno now exercises his First Amendment freedoms by opting out of organized religion. Speech is his most valued freedom, but press is a close second. “Look, if you want to be like Russia or North Korea or Brazil or any other dictatorships in the world, you’re going to want to limit freedom of the press because you don’t want free thought to get around,” Moreno said. “You don’t want people thinking on their own.”

Rise Briggs, a picture framer and farmer in Roseburg, Ore., is also concerned about freedom of thought. Active on various community boards, Briggs has lately felt that free speech — her most treasured freedom — is under attack.

“I don’t expect people to agree with me, but I expect people to think,” says Briggs, a Native American. “I’ve always written the letters to the editor and things like that as I process. It gets people to either get fired up and do something or … something along those lines. But I didn’t expect a lot of venom and that’s what I’m getting now.”

Still, she opposes the idea of campus “safe spaces” where speech is limited for college students. “You must allow the ideas to be heard,” she said. Nor does she believe in the idea of hate speech, defining the term as “made up to silence people.”

“If you believe in the First Amendment, you can say whatever you want. It affords you the ability to be heard and to have conversations and dialogues and resolve issues that may need to be able to have people debate.”

Religious freedom is most vital to&nbsp;Robert Gray, whose family fled Germany and Switzerland for Pennsylvania in the late 1600s due to religious persecution they experienced as Mennonites.

Gray, a CEO who lives in Terre Haute, Ind., worries about the lack of responsibility people exhibit in exercising their freedoms today. “If I know my speech is going to hurt somebody and take away their rights, maybe I should think a sec … and engage my brain before I put my mouth in gear.”

For Arroyo, it all comes down to five freedoms. “I value the First Amendment because it presents me with five rights that I have to live my life and enjoy my life in the company of my fellow citizens.”

Clay Center's Kissinger wins lottery prize package for K-State-KU game

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly appointed Susan Robson, Marion, to the 8th&nbsp;Judicial District vacancy in Marion County created by the retirement of Chief Judge Michael Powers.

“Susan is an accomplished attorney with decades of legal experience,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“As a longtime resident of Marion County, she has demonstrated her commitment to the law, and to the county and its citizens. I know she will serve the people of the Eighth Judicial District well on the bench.”

Robson has been in private practice in Marion since 2017, representing clients in a wide variety of areas including civil matters, criminal defense, contract, and tax law. She currently serves as the city attorney for Marion, Goessel, and Durham, and is also the prosecutor for Hillsboro.

Robson previously served as the Marion County Attorney from 2001 until 2017. Robson is a member of the Kansas Bar Association and the City Attorney Association of Kansas and has been active in various community organizations. In addition to her legal practice, she volunteers with local baseball and basketball teams. She is a graduate of Kansas State University and received her law degree from Washburn University School of Law in 1990. She resides in Marion with her husband.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“During my thirty years of practicing law, I have taken part in almost every type of case that would come before a District Court Judge,”&nbsp;Robson said.&nbsp;“I’m honored that Governor Kelly and the nominating commission have given me the ability to serve my community as a judge.”

District court judges in the 8th&nbsp;Judicial District are appointed by the governor and selected from nominees chosen by a district nominating commission. Judges in nominating commission districts are subject to retention elections every four years.

Governor appoints Robson 8th Judicial District judge

The City of Salina has announced its curbside leaf collection schedule for this fall.

General Services staff will be conducting curbside leaf collection from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, weather permitting. This schedule is subject to change depending on when the leaves actually begin to fall. 

As the weeks progress, staff will provide public updates to help keep everyone wishing to participate in the program properly informed. To help staff collect all the leaves set out by the public this season, included below are the participant guidelines.

●Rake and pile leaves between the curb and sidewalk. If no sidewalk exists, pile leaves directly behind the curb. Crews will not be picking up bags nor collecting leaves in the alleys.

●Don’t rake or blow leaves into the street as this can be a hazard to traffic and is a violation of City Code. Additionally, placing leaves in the street may cause problems for our storm drainage systems.

●Don’t park vehicles directly in front of or behind leaf piles, as this makes collection more difficult for our crews.

●Have your leaves ready for collection on the first day of the schedule for your respective zone.

●There will only be one round of curbside leaf collection in each zone; however, customers may call in to report locations missed by the leaf collection crew or when weather conditions or late leaf deposits require additional collection.

Salina curbside leaf collection announced

The Diocese of Salina has announced that Heather Hartman has been hired as the new donor advisor for the Catholic Foundation for Diocese of Salina. 

Hartman brings many valuable traits to the foundation and is known for being a strong leader, faith-oriented, dedicated to nonprofit work, and having strong relationship-building skills. She has previous experience working with a local foundation for almost a decade, where she helped facilitate many successful Match Month Campaigns. Hartman and her family reside in Beloit, where they are parishioners of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

“I am thrilled to join the Catholic Foundation and help serve the Salina Diocese. I am thankful for the opportunity to continue to work in rural Kansas and help revitalize our communities. I look forward to building relationships with donors and supporting their charitable aspirations within our Catholic faith,” said Hartman.

Registration now open for 11th annual Frosty Fun Runs

After a frigid start to the weekend, temperatures are expected to be seasonal today.

An overnight low of 34 was recorded at the Salina Regional airport earlier this morning. High temperatures in the area are forecast to be in the upper 60s to lower 70s on Saturday.

A warming trend is expected for Sunday through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Seasonal temperatures will slowly climb above normal by Tuesday with breezy conditions.

The grand opening of Salina's newest retail stores is set.

Glik's has scheduled the grand opening of its two stores in Salina's Central Mall for 9 a.m. Oct. 28. 

"We are excited about coming to Salina in October," the company noted in a news release.

One store will be a women’s boutique featuring women’s fashion, footwear and accessories. The other store will be a Glik’s Mens, which will feature men’s fashion, footwear and accessories, according to information from the company.

Glik’s is a family owned retail company carrying name brand apparel/footwear for men and women. Brands include The North Face, Patagonia, Thread &amp; Supply, KanCan, Hey Dude, Roxy, Nature Backs, Simply Southern, HUK, Ariat, Love Stitch, Billabong, Hurley, 1897, Quiksilver, and more.

"Each Glik’s store location is personally selected by a member of the Glik family, and many of our buyers have been promoted from our boutiques. It’s that local experience and personal insight that allows us to fill our stores with brands and styles specifically chosen for your community. This also means you’ll never find two Glik’s stores that are exactly the same," the company explained.

Since the first Glik’s store opened in 1897, five generations of the Glik family have built a family-owned retail company that now encompasses more than 60 stores in 11 states. The first location in St. Louis may have begun as a menswear store, but the second location in Madison, Ill., expanded into a full-blown department store. And now, more than 120 years later, with recognition as the 14th oldest retailer in the United States, Glik’s is opening new stores with a focus on boutique fashion.

TOPEKA – Humanities Kansas recently awarded a SHARP Recovery Grant in the amount of $8,150 to Salina Public Library. 

The library’s Assistant Director Amy Adams serves as project director. The library serves people of all ages and backgrounds in Salina, Saline County and the larger north-central Kansas region. Its core humanities programs include storytimes, book discussions, exhibits and educational presentations on history, literature and culture.

The SHARP Recovery Grants support Kansas cultural organizations that provide humanities programming and are facing financial hardship due to the coronavirus. Grants are for general operating support, staff retention, and needed digital and/or operational transitions for cultural work in the post-pandemic era. Humanities Kansas awarded 121 SHARP grants statewide.

“Humanities Kansas is honored to be able to support Kansas cultural organizations as we recover from the impact of Covid,” said Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas Executive Director. “This past year has demonstrated that Kansans lean into the humanities during challenging times. Kansas cultural organizations that do work in the humanities provide important social connections and contribute to the economic well-being and strength of our communities.”

Funds have been made available through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to assist cultural institutions affected by the coronavirus as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARP) approved by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Joseph R. Biden.&nbsp;

Salina Public Library receives SHARP Recovery Grant
