Police are investigating a robbery that allegedly occurred early this morning in north Salina.

A 38-year-old Salina woman told police that she was sitting on a bench under the gazebo north of The Heritage at Hawthorne Village apartments, 715 N. Ninth Street, shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday when she saw a white Dodge car, either a Challenger or Charger, drive by on N. Ninth Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

She told police that a short while later, while she was looking at her cellphone, someone came up behind her and grabbed her white and black backpack that contained cigarettes and ID cards, and took off running. The woman said the man got into the same white car she had just see drive by on N. Ninth Street, Forrester said. The car left southbound on N. 10th Street, she told police.

The woman described the alleged robber as being a white male wearing a beanie, jacket, jeans, and shoes that all were dark in color, Forrester said. She said the man had a black handgun in his hand.

Total loss was estimated at $70.
