SALINE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30a.m. Saturday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Peterbilt semi driven by&nbsp; Luis C.&nbsp; Manzano-Reyes, 33, Houston, Texas, was southbound on Interstate 135 at&nbsp;at E. McReynolds Road.

The driver swerved to miss a deer. The vehicle entered the west ditch. The diver steered back onto the road and overturned.&nbsp; The semi came to rest on the interstate under McReynolds Road.

&nbsp;EMS transported Manzano-Reyes to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The right lane was closed, according to the KHP. Authorities reminded drivers to slow down for those on scene.

Driver hospitalized in Salina after semi overturns on I-135

CINCINNATI (AP) —Kroger and Albertsons will sell more than 400 stores and other assets for about $1.9 billion, seeking to clear a path for a merger with antitrust regulators reviewing a deal that would unify two of the nation’s largest grocery chains.

The 413 stores, along with QFC, Mariano’s and Carrs brand names, are being sold to to C&amp;S Wholesale Grocers. Kroger will also divest the Debi Lilly Design, Primo Taglio, Open Nature, ReadyMeals and Waterfront Bistro private label brands. In addition, C&amp;S will get eight distribution centers and two offices.

All fuel centers and pharmacies associated with the divested stores will remain with the stores and continue to operate.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-albertsons-companies-inc-0cfbd68f81ba8aab7c1d3012c69804d9" target="_blank">Kroger</a>&nbsp;and Albertsons agreed to merge in October. Kroger, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, bid $20 billion for Albertsons. Kroger would also assume $4.7 billion of Albertsons’ debt. The deal is targeted to close early next year. Kroger is the parent company of Dillons.

The grocery chains say they must merge to compete with Walmart, Amazon and other major companies that have stepped into the grocery business. And there is significant consolidation throughout the grocery sector as companies fight with rising prices for everything from food to workers.

Last month, discount grocer Aldi said it&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/aldi-winndixie-harveys-groceries-5a19b6cbf58110b8921c5852d8cbd9ae" target="_blank">plans to buy</a>&nbsp;400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets in the southern U.S.

Before the deal with C&amp;S closes, Kroger may, in connection with securing Federal Trade Commission and other governmental clearance, require C&amp;S to buy up to an additional 237 stores in certain regions. If more stores are added to the agreement, C&amp;S will pay Kroger an additional as-yet-to-be-determined financial amount.

C&amp;S, which was founded in 1918, is a supplier to independent grocery stores, supplying more than 7,500 independent supermarkets, retail chain stores and military bases. It currently runs Grand Union grocery stores and Piggly Wiggly franchise and corporate-owned stores in the Midwest and Carolinas.

C&amp;S has prior experience with divestitures related to mergers and has successfully transitioned union employees and their associated collective bargaining agreements in the past.

“Importantly in our agreement, C&amp;S commits to honoring all collective bargaining agreements which include industry-leading benefits, retaining frontline associates and further investing for growth,” Kroger Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen said in a statement on Friday.

Shares of Kroger Co., based in Ohio, rose 5% Thursday and Albertsons Cos., based in Idaho, rose 3%.

One of the first opportunities for the public to get a feel for the new facility is "Slumber in the Slammer," which will be held on Friday, November 3.&nbsp;

Experience life as an inmate complete with dinner served, cell extraction, DEMO by the SORT team, and equipment demonstrations.&nbsp;

Registration is open until Oct. 1. Registration forms are available at the Saline County Sheriff's Office, 251 N. 10th Street.

As noted on the flyer, occupancy is limited to 120 participants. All minors must accompanied by a parent or guardian of the same gender.&nbsp;

Prevent damage now by using insecticides, says K-State horticulture expert

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Managing plant pests is a common garden task, but Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says using preventive methods in the fall also is important.

“There are typically two generations of elm leaf beetles each year,” Domenghini said. “They overwinter as adults and emerge from their protective shelters in early spring. As elm trees develop leaves, the beetles move in and females begin laying eggs.”

Young Elm Leaf Beetle larvae are dark-colored, hairy grubs. Older larvae are yellow with two long, dark stripes. Adult beetles have green and yellow stripes.

“Larvae hatch and spread throughout the tree to feed. Larvae reach maturity within four weeks and seek shelter to pupate,” Domenghini said. Larvae may travel to the bottom of the tree or in cracks of bark.

Domenghini said larvae cause most of the damage by skeletonizing leaves of elm trees. Adult beetles chew holes through the leaves resulting in a change of color to brown and dropping.

Preventive methods include several insecticides. Healthy trees that have not been greatly affected should not be sprayed in the fall.

Larvae and adult sprays include acephate (Acephate, Orthene), spinosad (Natural Guard Spinosad, Conserve, Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew, Monterey Garden Insect Spray), lambda cyhalothrin (Scimitar, Spectracide Triazicide).

Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. Salina Police Chief meet and greet event planned for Sunday

Salina Post, in partnership with the Smoky Hill Museum, is proud to present Flashback Friday. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays"

In April of 1858, a group of men from Lawrence, Kansas, founded Salina and organized the Salina Town Company. These men were: Col. William A. Phillips, David Phillips, Alexander M. Campbell Sr., A.C. Spillman, and James Muir. It is interesting to note that all of these men were Scotch Presbyterians and with the exception of Muir, were all related. 

Saline County was organized a year later, making both Salina and Saline County older than the state of Kansas, which was not admitted into the union until 1861.

Two townsite locations for the City of Salina were considered : one along the Blue River not far from Manhattan and the second on the banks of the Smoky Hill. Because the Blue River flooded the first site, William A. Phillips and his companions, James Muir, and Alexander Campbell, continued west and selected the Smoky Hill River site for their town.

The original boundaries of Salina consisted of Front Street on the east; Ninth Street on the west; North Street on the north; and South Street on the south. The main north-south street was called Santa Fe because it pointed south towards the Santa Fe Trail, a freight road that ran through present-day McPherson County. The main east-west street, Iron Avenue, ran down from the rise east of town known as Iron Mound.

Col. Phillips’ sister Christina and brother-in-law Alexander Campbell, Sr. started Salina’s first store, Campbell Dry Goods. It was located in a log house at the southwest corner of 5th Street and Iron Avenue. The store operated as a trading post and the first post office. It served both settlers and Native Americans needing supplies.

A natural gathering place, Campbell’s store was the only trading post and outfitting station between Salina and the Rocky Mountains from 1858 through most of 1859. Campbell never refused a customer, treating all equally and trading with both settlers and Native Americans. Fellow town founder Alexander Spilman said, “He is one the best and truest men I ever knew."

The log cabin home and store burned to the ground on March 4, 1861. This is the first recorded fire in the city of Salina.

In the 1860s, the Campbells built and moved their store to a new building at the southeast corner of Santa Fe and Iron Avenues. The Faulkner &amp; Wildman real estate office was located next door. The Goddard Hotel was across the street.

In the late 1870s, Campbell partnered with Wallace C. Tuthill and Arthur C. Sloan. In 1883, Campbell &amp; Tuthill replaced their building with a two-story brick structure for their store and the post office. 

For nearly 30 years, this store served the community’s merchandising needs and encouraged the influx of new businesses to stimulate and sustain city growth.&nbsp;

No one worked harder for the interests of the town during that time than Alexander Campbell. In addition to running the store, Campbell also ran a free ferry across the Smoky Hill River, where Iron Avenue crosses the river today. He also served for more than 25 years as Salina’s postmaster and was elected register of deeds of Saline County. 

Campbell and his wife Christena were life-long residents of Salina. The Campbells hold the distinction of being the first Salina settlers to be married and their daughter, Christina, was the first white child born in the county.

Public Health Advisories for Kansas Lakes Due to Blue-Green Algae

&nbsp;Marshall Motors has supported Kansas Wesleyan for decades, and now vehicles from its fleet will help students, faculty and staff spread the university’s mission across the Midwest. KWU announced Thursday that financial support from Marshall has enabled the university to add six 15-passenger vans to its fleet.

“We’re truly grateful for the generosity of Larry Marshall and the Marshall Motors team,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “This gift will enable us to continue to improve the reach of our brand, and it will enable those Coyotes traveling for official university business to do so using some truly great vehicles.”

While the vans will be used primarily for athletic teams, they will be available to all faculty and staff groups on official university business. All six will be outfitted with KWU branding and logos.

“It’s our honor to help KWU acquire these vans,” said Larry Marshall, owner of Marshall Motors. “We hope it betters the student experience by making travel easier for countless Coyotes in the upcoming years.”

Marshall Motors increases support of Kansas Wesleyan

The Salina Fire Department has announced that the second annual Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Fun Walk will take place next month at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Salina Fire Chief Tony Sneidar said although planning for the climb last year was on a time crunch, there was still great support for the event.&nbsp;

"At last year's inaugural event we had some great support," Sneidar said. "We put the event together in about seven weeks and I got confirmation in March that of the 50 climbs around the country last year, we were 14th in funds raised at $25,800. So I'm looking forward to this year eclipsing that - not by a little bit, but by a lot."

The Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on Sept. 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY member, but it symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others.

Firefighter and community participation can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. Since that fateful day, there have been an additional 300+ firefighters who have succumbed to 9/11 related injuries or illness.

The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk are not a timed race event, but a way for firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, families, friends and the entire community to honor and remember. 

All participants will have the honor of carrying the name badge of one of the fallen 343 firefighters and will also receive a 9/11 Stair Climb/Family Walk T-shirt to commemorate the event.

Following the stair climb and family walk, an after-party event will be held from 6-11 p.m. at the Tumbleweed event Center, 5680 W. Old Highway 40, Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; This year, the event will host Lieutenant Joe Minogue, FDNY Ret., as a special guest. His insight into the events of 9/11 and its global aftermath, will inspire all who hear him speak that night or catch one of his appearances at various civic groups a few days beforehand.

Kansas State University agricultural economics and veterinary medicine staff are taking their knowledge on animal record-keeping to mobile phones with an app that is now available in app stores for IPhone and Android devices.

K-State livestock economist Ted Schroeder said the app, called CalfDex, is free to download. It was developed by agricultural economist master’s graduate Jake Hefley (who now works at the University of Missouri), master’s candidate Audrey Marchek, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson and Schroeder.

The project was funded by a grant from the USDA Federal-State Marketing Improvement Program.

“Our team is eager to provide users with a convenient and easy-to-use modern animal data management tool to keep pace in an ever-changing industry,” Schroeder said. “Considering the growing importance of information exchange in the beef supply chain, there is value in an application that has the ability to store and upload data at the whole-herd and individual animal levels, while also facilitating easy downstream data sharing.”

The app is designed for use in the field even where cell phone service is not available. Schroeder said CalfDex enables producers to maintain efficient and accurate calving, weaning and treatment records – mitigating the risk of clutter, data loss and misplacement that is commonly seen with paper records. The data is also stored across calving seasons for easy access.

Schroeder said the app allows users to protect information with a unique email address and password, established by the user.

“Because it has the capability to track multiple herds and individual animal information, CalfDex is tailored to meet the needs of all sizes of calving operations, from large purebred enterprises to a 4-H or FFA student beginning their first beef breeding project,” Schroeder said.

Freddy’s will partner with the athletes to share their menu favorites on social media channels and the brand’s website.

"What makes Freddy’s so great is that it’s a chill, homey, old-school vibe,” said Alton McCaskill, University of Colorado Running Back. “The burgers taste fresh and real, and the custard is always good with really great flavors.”

Freddy’s is showcasing male and female collegiate athletes excelling in football, soccer, and volleyball. While some of the athletes are new to the growing brand, others frequented the restaurant throughout their childhoods.&nbsp;

“I wanted to partner with Freddy’s because it’s a place that was right by my house, and I grew up eating it with friends, so I thought it would be a really cool opportunity,” said Emma Halter, University of Texas Libero.&nbsp;The Freddy’s Collegiate Athlete Partnership is comprised of the following students:
