Out-of-state driver involved in single vehicle crash on I-70

A 30-year-old man from San Antonio, Texas, was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday afternoon on I-70 in Saline County.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan at about 3:15 p.m., an out-of-state driver was heading westbound on I-70 in his 2007 Volvo when he allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. When the driver woke up, he realized the vehicle had veered into the median and was approaching oncoming traffic.

"This happened right at milepost 243, right before the Mulberry Creek Bridge," Soldan said. "He went in between the median, there's a flat guardrail, he he was kind of going back towards the northwest, when he went through the guard rail, struck the side of the bridge, and then went kind of backward down the embankment, facing eastbound."

The driver sustained a head injury and was transported by Salina EMS to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment.

The Sheriff's Office did not report any other vehicles involved in the crash.
