Good One

Sept. 13- Sept. 18

Following the nostalgic throwback, the cinema will debut Good One, a highly anticipated indie drama, running from September 13 to 18. Directed by India Donaldson, the film delves into the complexities of family dynamics, focusing on the strained relationship between teenage daughter Sam (Lily Collias) and her distant father Chris (James Le Gros).

Set during a camping trip in the Catskills, Good One explores how humor and sarcasm act as barriers between people who should be closest. The film tackles themes of broken relationships and miscommunication, particularly between parents and children. The presence of Chris’ carefree friend Matt (Danny McCarthy) further complicates the father-daughter dynamic, adding tension to an already fragile bond.

With stunning cinematography by Wilson Cameron, Good One uses the expansive wilderness setting to emphasize the emotional isolation of its characters. The performances, particularly Collias’ portrayal of 17-year-old Sam, have been lauded as authentic and deeply affecting. While Sam’s vulnerability and struggles with her identity are central to the story, Chris and Matt are portrayed with nuance, making for a powerful exploration of missed connections and unspoken tensions.

Good One is rated R for profanity. Tickets are available on the Salina Art Center Cinema website.
