K-State cattle experts share advice on how to get calves to eat from the feedbunk

When dining at a new restaurant and the eating utensil is unexpectedly chopsticks instead of a fork, it can make for a challenging experience.

Similarly, newly weaned calves also have to adjust when they transition from a pasture to a dry lot and are expected to eat from an unfamiliar feedbunk, said the experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/09/01/listener-question-economic-questions-seedstock-producers-what-are-diseases-challenges/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast.

“Cattle need to know that there is feed in the bunk and if you just dump the concentrate in there they may not find it, so I recommend producers also put some long-stem hay in with the feed so the cattle see it,” said K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster.

He also advises starting cattle out on high-quality hay.

“It will take calves two to three days to get adjusted to eating from the bunk,” Lancaster said.

Another decision that producers must evaluate is whether to deliver hay from a round bale feeder or grind the hay and mix it with the other feedstuffs, he said.

Lancaster and the other experts agree that there are pros and cons to that decision.

“Hay that has been mechanically chopped and offered as feed is a smaller particle size so it is more easily digested and will break down faster in the rumen than long-stem hay,” Lancaster said. “Because of this, cattle will consume more energy on a daily basis than they would if they were eating hay from a round bale.”

Cattle eating from a round bale will digest the hay slower and more of that will be absorbed in the digestive tract, he added.

“A downside of feeding hay from the round bale is that cattle will waste hay as they pick through the bale to eat and it ends up falling to the ground and getting stepped on,” said K-State veterinarian Bob Larson.

He added that the benefit of grinding the hay and adding it to the feed is that it is easier to control the portion size, especially in a limited feeding situation.

“Grinding the hay and mixing it with the concentrates allows me to control what they are eating,” Larson said.

While that is true, K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers said there are drawbacks to grinding the hay.

“The downside to this feeding strategy is the cost of the equipment and the labor it takes to grind the hay and feed it,” Lubbers said.

But for producers who already have the equipment and labor available, the experts agree adding chopped hay to the ration is a good strategy.

“If I’ve got the ability to mix all my ingredients together, it is going to improve the feed efficiency of the calves,” Lancaster said.

MANHATTAN – Composting is a simple way to keep the home garden healthy while also helping the environment, but there is a certain art to doing it right, said Dennis Patton, a horticulture agent in K-State Research and Extension’s Johnson County office.

“The science is making sure the composting process works,” he said, “and the art part of it is figuring out what works for you.”

Patton said compost can be any dead plant or animal matter, but don’t be fooled by the definition.

“We put dead stuff in the compost, but the compost is very much alive,” he said.

Within the compost pile, there are live microorganisms that feed off dead matter. Managing the microorganisms is the key to composting, Patton said.

Patton said compost consists of a mixture of green and brown matter, both of which are key to making the microorganisms “happy.”

Brown matter is the source of carbon, and the bulk of what gardeners use in the compost pile; it includes dead leaves and other garden waste. Green matter is the source of nitrogen and somewhat harder to find; it can be grass clippings, vegetable and fruit scraps and animal manure.

Patton recommends about 2/3 brown matter to 1/3 green matter.

Some materials should not be used in compost, he said. Pet feces -- especially cat and dog feces -- should not be used. Nor should food waste that contains fats or oils.

Also, grass, hay or manure from a pasture that uses herbicides should not be added to the pile. Patton said these materials can all taint the compost and damage plants.

Once safe materials are available for compost, Patton said there is not really a bad location for the pile, but he suggests avoiding a low area that will collect water -- which can cause a bad smell.

To maintain the compost pile, Patton suggests watching for the development of heat within a week to 10 days of its initial construction. “If the compost pile is properly constructed, that internal part of the pile should be reaching up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit or more.”

Once the pile begins to cool down, it is time to turn the materials, a process that distributes moisture. Eventually, the pile will heat up again, then turned when it cools.

Patton said it may take between 3-6 months to form compost, but he adds, “the more you leave it in the back corner and leave it up to Mother Nature, it may take a year or more until you have compost.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More than $500 million in unclaimed property and a chance to win $529 into a Learning Quest 529 education savings account will be offered at the State Treasurer’s Office booth at this year’s Kansas State Fair, according to State Treasurer Steven Johnson.

“We are excited to bring the State Treasurer’s Office to the Kansas State Fair once again this year,” Johnson said. “We invite all fair-goers to stop by our booth in the Meadowlark Building to search their name in our unclaimed property database, and enter our giveaway to win $529 into a Learning Quest 529 education savings account for themselves or a loved one.”

Johnson’s office administers the state’s unclaimed property program, which currently holds more than $500 million waiting to be claimed. One in 10 people is estimated to have unclaimed property, which could include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and safe deposit boxes. Kansans can search the online database any time at&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascash.ks.gov/" target="_blank">https://KansasCash.ks.gov</a>.

The State Fair also coincides with September’s recognition as College Savings Month. Johnson’s office will have information at the booth on the savings programs administered by his office, including the Learning Quest 529 plan, KIDS matching grant program, ABLE savings plan, Kansas ScholarShop, and First-Time Home Buyer Savings Accounts. Staff from Johnson’s office will be on hand to answer questions about these programs, and visitors to the booth will be invited to enter to win $529 towards a Learning Quest 529 account. Child Advocacy and Parenting Services seeks new Executive Director

A local man accidentally shot himself in the shoulder after mishandling a firearm at Coronado Heights Tuesday afternoon in Saline County.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, on Tuesday between 4:00-4:30 p.m. two Salina men were allegedly drinking alcohol at Coronado Heights.&nbsp;

"One of the men, a 22-year-old of Salina had with him his 40-caliber pistol," Soldan said. "He's up there drinking and pretty well intoxicated and discharges a few rounds and accidentally shoots himself in the shoulder."

Soldan said the individual with a self-inflicted gunshot wound was transported to his parent's house, where he was subsequently transported to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;

Soldan said when the victim arrived at the hospital he was still highly intoxicated and unable to explain what had happened to his shoulder.&nbsp;

"We had a gunshot victim, but we couldn't quite figure out what was going on. Then we found out who his buddy was and he told us the story," Soldan said. "His buddy said he [the victim] was just kind of dancing around with the gun when it discharged."

The victim left the hospital against medical advice Tuesday night.&nbsp;

Police: Salina man who 'danced with gun' accidentally shot his shoulder

Haner received supervised practical training to help him pursue a career as an aircraft mechanic, technician or maintenance manager. His duties also included assisting in completing routine and non-routine tasks, analysis, investigation and solving problems in the maintenance, servicing, repairing and overhauling of aircraft.Joya Shelton, junior in web development technology and digital media technology,&nbsp;Kansas City, Missouri, interned as a marketing communications and analytics intern for PBI-Gordon.&nbsp; Shelton did social media management and website research to help the company build on its social media and online presence. Her internship concluded with a presentation to management on how they could utilize TikTok to build their brand and sell more products.&nbsp;It is K-State Salina's mission to ensure all students are career ready and prepared to successfully navigate their professional lives. 910KINA/Salina Post Sports Schedule 

Feel the squish of the grapes in the time-honored tradition of grape stomping as you help celebrate the grape and farm winery industries in Kansas. The Kansas Department of Agriculture will host the 17th annual Kansas Grape Stomp on Saturday, September 9, at 1:00 p.m. in Gottschalk Park at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Gather around the grape tubs to watch state and local leaders and others stomp grapes to salute the Kansas grape and farm winery industries. The competitive stomp-off will lead the event and an open stomp for all Kansas State Fair attendees will follow.

As of August 2023, there are 50 farm wineries throughout Kansas.

KDA is committed to advocating for and promoting the agriculture industry, the state’s largest industry, employer and economic contributor, and encourages all fairgoers to attend the grape stomp to have fun while learning about the grape and farm winery industries in Kansas.

KDA to Host 17th Annual Kansas Grape Stomp at the Kansas State Fair

One person was injured following a single-vehicle accident that occurred Sunday afternoon on N. Brookville Road in Saline County.&nbsp;

On Sunday at approximately 3:22 p.m. Cadence Halfhill, 17, of Ellsworth was traveling southbound in the 2800 block of N. Brookville Road when the tire of her&nbsp; 1997 Ford Explorer dropped off the edge of the roadway causing her to swerve.&nbsp;

"She tried to come back onto the road but overcorrected and ended up swerving back to the right again," Saline County Sheriff Soldan said. "The vehicle began to roll and it rolled down through a ditch out into the pasture, taking out a fence and a tree."

Soldan said Halfhill did sustain injuries to her arm and one of her legs broke during the accident.&nbsp;

"She was transported to Salina Regional Health Center by Salina EMS," Soldan said. "She was in a place where the vehicle couldn't be seen from the road so she had to crawl up to be seen by someone on the road."

Soldan said the driver of a passing vehicle saw Halfhill and stopped to call 9-1-1.&nbsp;
