Late summer on our central Kansas farm has consisted of keeping our crops irrigated, checking cattle, working ground and the start of fall harvest.Since the kids are back in school, my main focus has been monopolizing large tracks of uninterrupted time during the day working in our office while my husband is out and about checking fields, switching water gates and running equipment.

In the mornings, my husband usually heads out in the side-by-side to check irrigation and switch water gates while I get the kids ready for school. During the summer mornings, he’d usually have one of the kids with him helping and keeping him company. Since school has started, my husband’s main helper is now our farm dog, Rosie.

Rosie has a constant known presence on our farm. Whether she’s barking at mysterious creatures in the night, welcoming visitors to our home with dirty pawprints, dumping out trashcans or harassing the barn cats, we can’t help but love that dog. Rosie is truly a gem of a farm dog and definitely takes all of her jobs very seriously.When she was a puppy, we wired a plastic egg crate onto the front of the four-wheeler that she’d ride in while checking irrigation.She would trot with pride behind her humans and remind us that she was ready to go to work as we’d pick her up and place her in her little crate.&nbsp; With her two little paws propped up on the edge of her box, you’d see her nose pointed high sniffing the air and her ears blowing in the wind as my husband would zoom down irrigation roads.When she no longer fit in her crate, she’d ride behind the driver. Something she still does to this day.Rosie is a staple in the farm truck when my husband or I are driving. Wherever we go, Rosie generally goes as well. She’s claimed the front passenger seat as her own and will begrudgingly make allowances for others to sit in her seat by scooting over to the middle and sitting right next to the driver only if the passenger will give her scratches behind her ears.

When we take the side-by-side out to check cattle, Rosie will only allow a passenger her seat if she can still either prop her front paws up onto the dashboard to get a full view of what’s ahead of her or if she can lay underneath the passenger’s legs and stick her head out the side of the UTV.Rosie also rides in combines and tractors for hours with one of her humans. One might see her on the lookout for wildlife to bark at while properly sitting at attention in the buddy seat as the tractor makes a turn at the edge of the field.&nbsp;While sitting in the buddy seat, she’s also been known to place her paw on my husband’s leg while he drives a combine for hours keeping him company. When she needs a break, she’ll just jump down to the floor and take a nap while enjoying the cold air coming from the vent.&nbsp;She’s entertainment, protection, motivation and a companion all balled up into one large ball of fur.

From checking the irrigation in the mornings to harvesting fall crops late into the night, our Rosie is living her best dog life this fall on the farm.

Insight: A farm dog's life

During the last month, Smoky View 4-H Club members participated in the Tri-Rivers Fair, learned about each other’s projects during its club tour, and elected new officers for the upcoming 4-H year.&nbsp;

During the fair August 7-12, the club won second place for their float, had Brynna Anderson as the Tri-Rivers Fair queen, and earned awards for 4-H projects.&nbsp;

A few weeks later, the club met again to hold its August meeting, which included officer elections. These elections are held every year to determine which members will get what jobs in the coming 4-H year. Members are elected through parliamentary procedure.&nbsp;

DICKINSON COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue a statewide Silver Alert for a missing Abilene man, according to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The agency is asking for the public's assistance to help locate 72-year-old Alan Duane Carroll. His last known location was westbound from Great Bend. 

Carroll was driving a 2004 Lexus GX with Kansas tag 863DMM.

Carroll is 6 feet tall, 205 pounds and has gray hair. He was last seen wearing a red polo shirt and jeans.

KBI: Silver Alert continues for missing Abilene man

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dan Murray with the Kansas chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business said good help remains hard to find for their members.

"Forty percent of small business owners reported job openings that they could not fill," Murray said. "That's down two points from last month, but it's still very, very high. It is the lowest level since February 2021."

When you know it's going to be a struggle to find a replacement, sometimes you have to open up the checkbook a little more to keep someone.

"More small business owners are planning to increase their compensation in the next three months," Murray said. "The unfilled job openings slipped again in August. Owners are actively working to retain current employees and attract qualified applicants. To do that, they've got to raise compensation."

Murray isn't optimistic about the rest of the year, either.

"Unless we see a significant change in our economy, I don't see the problem improving," Murray said. "We have a population problem in Kansas, as you likely well know. Our population has remained flat or decreased in some respects, depending on where you live in the state. Until we address that problem and attract more folks to come to the state of Kansas, I'm not sure that we're going to see much improvement."

Thirty-five percent of small business owners have job openings for skilled workers and 18% have openings for unskilled labor.

Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois, in tandem with State Treasurer Steven Johnson, is taking proactive steps to ensure that residents are aware of and can easily access any <a href="https://unclaimedproperty.ks.gov/">unclaimed property</a> that may rightfully be theirs. With over $4 million in unclaimed property in Saline County, the push is on to ensure these funds find their way back to their rightful owners.

"We understand the importance of every dollar for our residents, and we're dedicated to bridging the gap between our community members and their unclaimed assets," explains DuBois. "Every unclaimed dollar represents a missed opportunity, unpaid bill, or a treat forgone. It's essential we get these funds back into the hands they belong to."

A dedicated kiosk has been installed in front of the Tag Office within the City/County building to simplify this process. Residents can access this kiosk to search for any property or funds owed to them. HS Football: Week One Area Scoreboard 

By KANDY CROSBY-HASTINGS SALINA PUBLIC LIBRARY Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. We have probably all heard this statement that has, in different forms and wordings, been attributed to Edmund Burke, George Santayana, and Winston Churchill. The message is clear. History is important. History entails many eras, areas, foci, and branches. When we think of history, many of us call to mind important events in the world or American history. (My personal favorites are nineteenth-century British social and literary studies). While it is enjoyable and paramount to examine research that helps us understand the world, it is also imperative to study and understand our local history. Let’s delve into the reasons why this is so.&nbsp;

I love to travel. I have seen and experienced historical sites, nature areas, science museums, cultural festivals (I will probably never forget that St. Patrick’s Day parade in the snow a few years ago), and gorgeous art exhibits. One of my most recent quests found me at a historical church at which I literally (and I do mean literally, not figuratively) gasped when I opened the door to the sanctuary. The art in this building is phenomenal, amazing, magnificent, majestic. It’s no wonder it is one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas Art and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. That said, I have never had the opportunity to travel farther than the four states that border Kansas. Perhaps these are the only states I will ever visit. I may never be able to travel across the United States on my dream literary tour. I may never make that trip to England for my history studies. That, however, has not halted my love of travel, nor has it dulled my traveling experiences. In fact, people are often flabbergasted when I tell them of the locations I have visited. They had no idea these places even existed.&nbsp;

In the same way that it is educational and entertaining to travel to wonderful locations in one’s area, studying one’s own history is a wonderful learning experience. Just as traveling to a closer location does not negate the experience of traveling, so studying one’s local and regional history can be an enjoyable exploration. I remember when my sons were younger, we made a weekly trip, beginning on Kansas Day, to the Salina Public Library to study the history of Kansas. We hit the historical books. We discovered Native American history. We studied John Brown and Bleeding Kansas. We investigated how Kansas was influential at the start of the American Civil War. We explored how and when Kansas was recognized as a state in the Union. (Believe it or not, this study came in handy a few years later when I debated with one of my history professors that Kansas was just as important in the Civil War as the Eastern Theater. There was more to this war than the battles only).&nbsp;

For Labor Day, we have explored the history of workers in Salina itself. We have explored industry in our city. After all, Salina was (and still is to some extent) an industrial city. We saw current industries, such as Tony’s Pizza and Great Plains Manufacturing. We researched the historical Vitrified Brick Facility that produced 4,000 bricks daily (and was housed where Indian Rock Park is now). We then traveled to the city to see which buildings that were made from those bricks are still standing. As one gazes upon these buildings, it is inspiring to think early Salinans created these bricks and built these buildings. Perhaps they were ancestors of yours or mine. The lasting quality of these simple tools and the projects built from them are a testament to the hard work and creativity that is part of our city’s heritage.&nbsp;

In 1858, David Phillips, William A. Phillips, Alexander M. Campbell, Sr., James Muir, and A.C. Spillman traveled from Lawrence to what would become Salina. The first dugout here was built north of what is today known as the Elm Street Bridge. The first building in Salina was on the corner of Iron Avenue and Fifth Street. The first baby born (and who survived infancy) in Salina was Christina Campbell, the daughter of Alexander Campbell and Christina Phillips Campbell. Salina would become a supplier of tools needed by those seeking gold in the Rocky Mountains. The railroad cinched our industrial heritage when it came to town in 1867, bringing more people and opportunities (City of Salina). Salina, Kansas, was incorporated as a city in the year 1870. Knowing this history allows us to celebrate the accomplishments of our ancestors. It motivates us to celebrate who we are as a community and encourages us to understand who we are as a society.&nbsp;

Anyone who knows me knows one of my big passions is the idea that we need to respect and protect our history. Knowing our local history encourages us to become involved in preserving our history. In Salina, we have the fabulous Smoky Hill Museum that I frequently visit. I have attended concerts and other events at the gorgeous, historic Stiefel Theatre. I adore going to the Central Kansas Flywheels Museum to understand more about our farming culture. These are all fantastic locations to explore. I hope everyone takes advantage of these opportunities. However, I want to see more preservation of our historical artifacts. We, as a society, can only understand the pertinence of preserving our history when we know that history – when we perceive what those artifacts are, where they came from, and who they represent. We have to know our history in order to protect it.&nbsp;

I would like to say the good times and the celebrations are the only parts of our local history to study. It always feels good to see the positive. It’s fun to browse antique photographs of graduations and weddings and new babies and blueprints for grand buildings. However, history is not just good. It’s not just something of which we should be proud. History is composed of people. That means there are going to be some negative, not-so-good things, too. If history always makes us proud, I can promise we are not viewing all of history. Our all-American city of Salina (named such in 1989) is no different than the rest of the world. We must explore these gloomy, even bad, areas of our local history.&nbsp;

In Caldwell Plaza, just outside the south doors of the Salina Public Library, there is a sign containing the story of a man who became part of an event I am sure all of us would prefer had not happened. In 1893, Dana Adams was convicted of assault. We cannot truly be sure how fair his trial was. He was an African American man. The man he was accused of assaulting was white. Adams was supposed to be sent to Leavenworth, Kansas. However, he never made it out of Salina. A mob of people ripped Adams from the train he had boarded and hanged him near what is now the Union Station train depot at 419 N. 7th St. Adams is now buried in an unmarked grave at Gypsum Hill Cemetery at 2020 E. Iron Ave.&nbsp;

Why, you may ask, do we want to hear about or study such horrible actions? I can understand that. None of us likes to hear of such atrocities. If you are like me, such studies can make me depressed, anxious, and even physically ill. Consider, however, that the lynching of Dana Adams was not brought to the public’s attention until 2018 – 125 years after it actually occurred. The marker to remember the injustice against him was not placed until last year (Rankin). Not only does Dana Adams deserve to be remembered, we, as a community, must proclaim loudly and boldly that we do not stand for what occurred. Only by recognizing the horror can we make this proclamation. Only by remembering can we do better for the future of our community.&nbsp;

One of the questions I often hear involves where to begin a study of local history. I am going to let you in on some ways historians approach such studies. There are several branches of historical study – and the tree that holds these branches grows more and more as the years progress. Some of the basic branches of history’s tree are pretty self-explanatory: military historians study the military and wars. Economic history is the study of economic systems. Political historians study political actions. Social historians study society. I often say social historians study the stories of people that need to be told – stories that have often been ignored. Cultural historians study the cultural aspects of society. What makes our city’s culture ours? There are branches of art history, scientific history, women’s history, and the list goes on.&nbsp;

How does this apply to our study of local history? Let’s take a moment to discuss. Knowing the history of the founders of Kansas is cultural history. Why did the individuals listed above travel to this area? What was their purpose? What about the railroad? How did it improve the quality of life for Salina’s early inhabitants? Searching for answers will lead the researcher to information about economic history. My family’s study of the workers in Salina, Kansas, is social history. It’s the story of those who may not always be remembered in history books. The story of Dana Adams is also social history. It’s a study of the oppression of a man, based upon his race. It’s a story that needs to be told. That church I recently visited is both cultural history and art history. (Did I mention there is a grotto outside of the larger building that is a part of World War II history?). Understanding the branches of history really brings the stories to life. It gives us a focus. Ask the who, how, and why questions. Find the answers. Discover what branches of history are your favorites and prepare to research.&nbsp;

If I have not convinced you of important reasons to study local history, maybe these fun questions will show there doesn’t have to be a reason. I am a huge proponent of learning just for the joy and sake of learning. Be curious. Be creative. Dig into the archives. Make new discoveries. Expand your horizons. As we here at the library like to say, be a lifelong learner.&nbsp;

We have probably all heard this statement that has, in different forms and wordings, been attributed to Edmund Burke, George Santayana, and Winston Churchill. The message is clear. History is important. History entails many eras, areas, foci, and branches. When we think of history, many of us call to mind important events in the world or American history. (My personal favorites are nineteenth-century British social and literary studies). While it is enjoyable and paramount to examine research that helps us understand the world, it is also imperative to study and understand our local history. Let’s delve into the reasons why this is so.&nbsp;<h2>Traveling the World – or Not</h2>I love to travel. I have seen and experienced historical sites, nature areas, science museums, cultural festivals (I will probably never forget that St. Patrick’s Day parade in the snow a few years ago), and gorgeous art exhibits. One of my most recent quests found me at a historical church at which I literally (and I do mean literally, not figuratively) gasped when I opened the door to the sanctuary. The art in this building is phenomenal, amazing, magnificent, majestic. It’s no wonder it is one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas Art and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. That said, I have never had the opportunity to travel farther than the four states that border Kansas. Perhaps these are the only states I will ever visit. I may never be able to travel across the United States on my dream literary tour. I may never make that trip to England for my history studies. That, however, has not halted my love of travel, nor has it dulled my traveling experiences. In fact, people are often flabbergasted when I tell them of the locations I have visited. They had no idea these places even existed.&nbsp;<h2>To Study History</h2>In the same way that it is educational and entertaining to travel to wonderful locations in one’s area, studying one’s own history is a wonderful learning experience. Just as traveling to a closer location does not negate the experience of traveling, so studying one’s local and regional history can be an enjoyable exploration. I remember when my sons were younger, we made a weekly trip, beginning on Kansas Day, to the Salina Public Library to study the history of Kansas. We hit the historical books. We discovered Native American history. We studied John Brown and Bleeding Kansas. We investigated how Kansas was influential at the start of the American Civil War. We explored how and when Kansas was recognized as a state in the Union. (Believe it or not, this study came in handy a few years later when I debated with one of my history professors that Kansas was just as important in the Civil War as the Eastern Theater. There was more to this war than the battles only).&nbsp;For Labor Day, we have explored the history of workers in Salina itself. We have explored industry in our city. After all, Salina was (and still is to some extent) an industrial city. We saw current industries, such as Tony’s Pizza and Great Plains Manufacturing. We researched the historical Vitrified Brick Facility that produced 4,000 bricks daily (and was housed where Indian Rock Park is now). We then traveled to the city to see which buildings that were made from those bricks are still standing. As one gazes upon these buildings, it is inspiring to think early Salinans created these bricks and built these buildings. Perhaps they were ancestors of yours or mine. The lasting quality of these simple tools and the projects built from them are a testament to the hard work and creativity that is part of our city’s heritage.&nbsp;<h2>To Know the Beginnings&nbsp;</h2>In 1858, David Phillips, William A. Phillips, Alexander M. Campbell, Sr., James Muir, and A.C. Spillman traveled from Lawrence to what would become Salina. The first dugout here was built north of what is today known as the Elm Street Bridge. The first building in Salina was on the corner of Iron Avenue and Fifth Street. The first baby born (and who survived infancy) in Salina was Christina Campbell, the daughter of Alexander Campbell and Christina Phillips Campbell. Salina would become a supplier of tools needed by those seeking gold in the Rocky Mountains. The railroad cinched our industrial heritage when it came to town in 1867, bringing more people and opportunities (City of Salina). Salina, Kansas, was incorporated as a city in the year 1870. Knowing this history allows us to celebrate the accomplishments of our ancestors. It motivates us to celebrate who we are as a community and encourages us to understand who we are as a society.&nbsp;<h2>To Keep Our History</h2>Anyone who knows me knows one of my big passions is the idea that we need to respect and protect our history. OFF THE SHELF: Why it is important to know your local history

The Labor Day holiday on Monday brings with it local government closings.

Most City of Salina and Saline County offices and facilities will be closed Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Both city and county offices and facilities are scheduled to return to regular hours on Tuesday.

Additionally, there will not be a City Commission meeting on Monday, September 4, 2023. 

The Salina Public Library will be closed.

On August 20, 2023, the Saline County Sheriff's Office responded to the 500 Blk of N. Marymount Rd. for the report of a vehicle burglary.

Upon arrival, it was learned that between August 19th and August 20th, the toolbox door on a work truck had been pried open. Once entry was made into the toolbox the suspects) stole a Dewalt Cordless Framing gun, a Dewalt Cordless Bandsaw, an Occidental framing tool belt, an Occidental Stronghold Suspension System, and a Stiletto framing hammer.

Total damage and loss are estimated to be in excess of $1000.00

K-State horticulture expert suggests dividing peonies this fall&nbsp;

While dividing peonies is not required, Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said doing so can increase bloom production, reduce disease and provide more peony plants for the garden.

“If you choose to divide your peonies, it needs to be done this time of year,” Domenghini said.&nbsp;

To start dividing peonies, Domenghini said gardeners should cut the stems just above the soil surface. Next, dig up the entire root system and remove soil from the roots.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Divide the root clump into small sections using a sharp knife,” Domenghini said. “Ensure each section has 3-5 buds as well as healthy roots.”&nbsp;

The planting location should receive sunlight at least half the day. Dig a hole large enough to fit the roots of the divided peonies so the buds will be covered by 1-2 inches of soil.&nbsp;

“Plants buried too deep may not flower,” Domenghini said. After planting, water thoroughly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Space dwarf peonies at least two feet apart and standard peonies four feet apart. To protect the newly divided peonies in cold weather, add a layer of straw, leaves or compost after the&nbsp;soil freezes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Domenghini warns that it may take a couple years for divided plants to return to full bloom productivity.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Submitted Kansas Wesleyan University is proud to announce its support of a project to benefit USD 307, centered around Ell-Saline High School.&nbsp; KWU has joined numerous organizations across the community to partner with Brookville Community Foundation to help the school purchase a new scoreboard.

“So much of what happens in communities revolves around schools, and our marketing strategy certainly reflects that,” said Brad Salois, KWU director of marketing and communications. “This project, however, was a little different. Ell-Saline has a long-term vision of using this board to teach students transferable skills, both in terms of technical operation and digital media. That made this opportunity stand out, and we’re proud to be a partner on the project.”

The scoreboard will be installed and operational for Ell-Saline’s first home football game on Friday, Sept. 1. Signage from each of the sponsoring organizations will be on the board, and numerous businesses – including KWU – will have digital ad opportunities on the new screen, as well.

The Ell-Saline agreement now gives KWU a visual presence at 11 regional high schools or school districts.

KWU supports USD 307 new scoreboard project

Salina Public Schools (SPS)&nbsp;recently hosted a luncheon in partnership with local medical providers to underscore the significance of nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals. The event brought together esteemed doctors, nurses, specialists, surgeons, school counselors and medical investigations instructors. The vital role of mentorship in shaping the future of healthcare was discussed.

During the luncheon, counselors and instructors engaged in dynamic conversations with medical practitioners, emphasizing the immeasurable value of hands-on learning experiences and opportunities for students to shadow medical professionals.&nbsp;

Dr. Curtis Stevens, director of secondary education at Salina Public Schools, explained, “When we work together to create mentorship programs, students gain a profound understanding of the medical field and a sense of confidence in their own abilities.”

Through these programs, students obtain invaluable insights into the skills required to pursue a successful career in the healthcare industry.

"By connecting students with experienced medical experts, we provide them with the guidance and support needed to navigate their journey toward a fulfilling future in healthcare," said Stevens.

In an effort to avoid issues with Saturday's weather forecast, officials at Kansas Wesleyan University have changed the game time for football's contest with Bethany College.&nbsp;

The game will now kick-off at 10 a.m. at Gene Bissell Field at JRI Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.&nbsp;

"Looking at the weather forecast, keeping the health and safety of all the involved student-athletes in mind, and consulting with our athletic training staff, we made the decision to move the game to the morning," said Kansas Wesleyan Athletic Director Miguel Paredes.

EMPORIA&nbsp;– Wild turkey populations have seen declines across the Midwestern and Southeastern United States for the last two decades. And in Kansas, turkey abundance indices, harvest and hunter success have declined substantially, as well. 

To address these declines, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is partnering with the National Wild Turkey Federation to fund key wild turkey research at Kansas State University with researchers within the Kansas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and College of Horticulture and Natural Resources.

The purpose of the study will be to examine wild turkey populations and ecology in Kansas to inform state harvest and habitat management. 

The research team will accomplish this by capturing and marking turkeys across Kansas with transmitters and leg bands to monitor their location and movements on sites inhabited by both Eastern and Rio Grande wild turkeys on public and private lands. Researchers will collect information on nesting, habitat use, reproduction, and survival to ultimately inform population models, and harvest and habitat management decisions.

“We’re excited about this opportunity to improve our understanding of wild turkeys in Kansas,” said Kent Fricke, KDWP small game coordinator. “KDWP staff are committed to learning and to informing our habitat and harvest management decisions. We look forward to working with the research team and NWTF to make this project successful.”

NWTF is helping fund several key components of the research project, including funding a hen and poult foraging ecology study in Kansas, as well as a multi-state assessment of disease in Rio Grande turkeys in Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

“We appreciate the support of NWTF for these important projects,” Fricke said. “These additional projects will greatly enhance our understanding of key aspects of turkey ecology in Kansas and across the Midwest.”

Fieldwork for the research project will begin in January 2024.

The German-native&nbsp;Stiefel&nbsp;brothers, Moses and Sigmund, made Salina&nbsp;their&nbsp;home in the late&nbsp;1880s. During their first years in the United States, the brothers learned the business way of trade. They worked&nbsp;the counters at the Salina Mercantile Co., owned by Jewish immigrant Benjamin A. Litowich before opening their own store.&nbsp;

Litowich &nbsp;tried several business ventures in his first 20 years in Salina. Then in 1896, he opened The Salina Mercantile&nbsp;at&nbsp;112 N. Santa Fe.&nbsp; Unlike his first few businesses, this store became a fixture in downtown through 1969. Part of “The Merc’s” success came from the backing and guidance&nbsp;Litowich&nbsp;received&nbsp;from the Rothschild Brothers mercantile which&nbsp;was owned by his in-laws. Litowich was not just a business owner. He also cared about the development of the city. He served on the&nbsp;streets and alleys&nbsp;committee as well as the&nbsp;corporations and franchise committees and the building committee. The ground where Salina Mercantile once stood is now home to Penny Layne home decor boutique.

In 1904,&nbsp;Stiefel&nbsp;Brothers and Co. opened&nbsp;a&nbsp;two-story building full&nbsp;of merchandise at 117 N. Santa Fe Avenue. It&nbsp;became a successful local business for over 70 years.&nbsp;During that time, the family&nbsp;expanded the store footprint to 119-121 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Moses’ son,Milton,&nbsp;and Sigmund’s son,&nbsp;Frank,&nbsp;carried on the family business and remained active in the community.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Stiefels&nbsp;retired in 1974,&nbsp;and&nbsp;they&nbsp;sold the business to the small retail chain, Kline’s Department Stores.&nbsp;Kline’s kept the&nbsp;Stiefel&nbsp;name with the tag line, “a Kline store.” In 1980, the&nbsp;Stiefel’s&nbsp;sign&nbsp;was removed, and it was known as Kline’s from 1980 to 1994.

Many shoppers remember Stiefel’s pneumatic tube for making change.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Stiefel&nbsp;name returned to Santa Fe Avenue when the Fox-Watson Theatre&nbsp;was restored&nbsp;and renamed the&nbsp;Stiefel&nbsp;Theatre. The&nbsp;Stiefels’ legacy is rooted in years of consistent support of downtown&nbsp;progress and improvement.

On a transatlantic flight to Europe, Éclair is arriving in Ireland. But this isn’t just another jet-lagged tourist: This is a four-legged traveler.

Éclair is a black lab puppy. She went to Europe as part of an exchange to help enhance the service dogs that assist people across the nation, and she was sent by an assistance dog service in rural Kansas.

Bryce Dolan is director of marketing and fundraising for KSDS Assistance Dogs Inc., which sent the puppy Éclair to Ireland as part of an international exchange.

KSDS had its beginnings through 4-H. In 1987, 4-H dog project members from Cloud, Riley and Washington counties began serving as puppy raisers for assistance dog organizations in Ohio and California.

When they realized that very few of these assistance dogs were being placed in the Midwest, they wanted an assistance dog training facility for people in the central U.S.

In 1990, the Kansas Specialty Dog Service (now known as KSDS) opened its doors in Washington, Kansas. KSDS is a non-profit organization that provides professionally trained guide and service dogs for people in need of a canine partner. KSDS is led by CEO Duane Toews and a board of volunteers.

“We began in one old converted steakhouse and now we have a ten-building campus,” Dolan said. That includes canine housing units, agility and training centers, and duplex apartments for human clients who come to get their assistance dogs.

KSDS works with a network of puppy raisers across the nation who care for puppies from age eight weeks to 18 months. Then the puppies come to KSDS for training and vetting before being paired with their human partner.

Clients come to Washington for one or two weeks to train with their assistance dog. “Our clients are so grateful, they come to tears when they are united with their canine partner,” Dolan said.

These dogs change lives. Guide dogs provide independence by helping people who are visually impaired. Service dogs assist those with mobility issues by doing such things as retrieving dropped items, opening handicap accessible doors, or pulling manual wheelchairs.

Remarkably, KSDS assistance dogs are given to clients free of charge. “This is only possible thanks to the generosity of our private donors across the country,” Dolan said. “We don’t accept tax dollars or government funding.”

Hill’s Pet Food is the official dog food sponsor of KSDS. “Hill’s has been huge,” Dolan said. For every client, Hill’s ships free pet food monthly for the life of the dog, and provides free dog food to puppy raisers.

KSDS has many other partnerships providing free or discounted benefits, including the Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University.

KSDS has a long-standing partnership with the Topeka Correctional Facility for a program called Pooches and Pals, where prison inmates are responsible for the dog’s care.

KSDS is accredited through Assistance Dogs International. ADI is affiliated with the International Breeding Cooperative, which helps produce assistance dogs.

In 2021, KSDS was selected as one of only seven North American assistance dog facilities to send a puppy to Europe. In exchange, KSDS received a puppy credit that will be used to diversify KSDS canine bloodlines and improve the genetic disposition of future assistance dog placements.

Through this program, KSDS has shared breeding stock or specimens with four countries on three continents.

In the U.S., KSDS has placed 630 service dogs in 36 states. It’s a remarkable record for an organization in the rural community of Washington, population 1,071 people. Now, that’s rural.

“We’re going back to our roots,” Dolan said. “We want to engage more 4-Hers and FFA members to be puppy raisers in order to help meet the growing demand for assistance dogs.”

Éclair made her transatlantic flight – not as a tourist, but as a puppy that was part of an international exchange to benefit future assistance dogs. But this isn’t just another jet-lagged tourist: This is a four-legged traveler.Éclair is a black lab puppy. She went to Europe as part of an exchange to help enhance the service dogs that assist people across the nation, and she was sent by an assistance dog service in rural Kansas.Bryce Dolan is director of marketing and fundraising for KSDS Assistance Dogs Inc., which sent the puppy Éclair to Ireland as part of an international exchange.KSDS had its beginnings through 4-H. In 1987, 4-H dog project members from Cloud, Riley and Washington counties began serving as puppy raisers for assistance dog organizations in Ohio and California.When they realized that very few of these assistance dogs were being placed in the Midwest, they wanted an assistance dog training facility for people in the central U.S.In 1990, the Kansas Specialty Dog Service (now known as KSDS) opened its doors in Washington, Kansas. KSDS is a non-profit organization that provides professionally trained guide and service dogs for people in need of a canine partner. KSDS is led by CEO Duane Toews and a board of volunteers.“We began in one old converted steakhouse and now we have a ten-building campus,” Dolan said. That includes canine housing units, agility and training centers, and duplex apartments for human clients who come to get their assistance dogs.KSDS works with a network of puppy raisers across the nation who care for puppies from age eight weeks to 18 months. Then the puppies come to KSDS for training and vetting before being paired with their human partner.Clients come to Washington for one or two weeks to train with their assistance dog. “Our clients are so grateful, they come to tears when they are united with their canine partner,” Dolan said.These dogs change lives. Guide dogs provide independence by helping people who are visually impaired. Service dogs assist those with mobility issues by doing such things as retrieving dropped items, opening handicap accessible doors, or pulling manual wheelchairs.Remarkably, KSDS assistance dogs are given to clients free of charge. “This is only possible thanks to the generosity of our private donors across the country,” Dolan said. “We don’t accept tax dollars or government funding.”Hill’s Pet Food is the official dog food sponsor of KSDS. “Hill’s has been huge,” Dolan said.
