The Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau recently was honored by the Travel Industry Association of Kansas (TIAK).

Abilene CVB garnered two of the 2021 Marketing Awards announced last week during the 2021 Kansas Tourism Conference in Liberal.

The TIAK Marketing Awards are chosen annually to recognize excellence in destination marketing initiatives across the state. They are divided into six categories and broken out by the organization’s marketing budget: Large (over $100,000), Medium (20,000 – $100,000), and Small ($19,999 and under).

Abilene CVB wins awards at Kansas Tourism Conference

Approximately $1,000 worth of damage was done to a business in Sunset Plaza early Sunday morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 2-4 a.m. Sunday, someone broke an eight-by-four-foot front window and the glass in a door at Driven Fitness, 1219B W. Crawford Street. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

Police are gathering surveillance video from area businesses to look for clues as to who broke the glass, Forrester said.

Professional teaching has rapidly eroded under pressure to increase graduation rates. The most recent new tool in this “race to the bottom” is a requirement for teachers to adjust their grading scale to “equal interval grading.” Simply, a teacher can keep their traditional 90-80-70-60 percent cutoffs for A-B-C-D grades, but a zero score starts at 50 percent!

The twisted rationale for demanding this change from teachers is that the use of a 60 percent cut-off for passing work is mathematically unfair, does not accurately reflect student knowledge, and is de-motivating. Supposedly redefining the zero will “re-imagine the grading scale” and make it more “mathematically sound and accurate.” &nbsp;

The argument is usually made using a “B” student who is averaging a score of 80–90 percent correct schoolwork, but who misses a required assignment or test. Thus the student’s “B” scores are now averaged with the zero and the student’s average falls below passing. Therefore the grading scales must be a scale of equal slices or intervals. And starting the zero at 50 achieves this “mathematical fairness.” This rationale is both ignorant of professional teaching practices and is mathematically illiterate.

Some educational objectives involve being able to perform a skill that is all-or-nothing, and the grading does not utilize any such mathematical array. Other objective assessments of complex topics may utilize multiple-choice tests with four or five answers to chose among. That provides a 20 to 25 percent chance of getting an answer right merely by guessing and knowing nothing about the subject. Added to the 50 percent baseline, that student who knows nothing is now a 70–75 percent “C” student!

Grading is a teacher’s professional responsibility and varies among disciplines. No administrator should interfere with a teacher’s professional teaching practices or evaluation procedures, just as no hospital administrator should demand a doctor perform uniform diagnosis and surgery for the wide variety of different patients.&nbsp; Patients are different and students are different. In the above example, a professional teacher would very likely discuss with the “B” student why he or she missed the required assignment and would provide a make-up or disregard the requirement if justified.

However, across the United States, more public school administrators are ordering their teachers to use this watered-down grading scale in these last three years. The driving force is the widespread pressure on schools to increase high school graduation rates by any means possible. This counterfeit “equal interval grading” results in a dilution of academics that devalues the grades of the higher performing students who have mastered the academic skills to move ahead into higher education. &nbsp;

This intrusion into teachers’ professionalism has become legitimate due to the No Child Left Behind and ESSA standardized testing that has made one-size-fits-all commands-from-above legitimate, thus de-professionalizing teachers and treating them as assembly line factory workers.

This de-professionalization of teachers is leading to a dramatic shortage of qualified teachers. High school students have personally witnessed their best teachers being handcuffed by top-down commands since 2001. These results are abundantly clear in the report, “Superintendents Struggle During Pandemic” just released and openly available on the National Superintendents Roundtable: “‘Unfortunately, we have begun to place people in the classroom who are not certified teachers. There are no applicants available who are fully certified,’ one respondent reported. ‘No one wants to go into education as a profession anymore. Colleges are not graduating enough educators to go around. Pay is a problem. Respect for teachers is a problem. Mandates and control of every aspect of the job is a problem.’”

This problem extends upward to the state Superintendents of Instruction, Education Commissioners and state boards of education that in 50 different state systems are dictating that graduation rates will increase despite the NAEP and ACT scores showing student performance is falling.

It would be very unprofessional for a healthcare system to mandate a higher survival rate for a particular ailment, by diluting the test that measures the disease. This dramatic grade inflation is likewise corrupt, generating high school graduation numbers based on empty grades and low student performance. &nbsp;

Any school administrator who insists teachers use equal interval grading should be fired.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LINDSBORG - Bethany College Theatre will kick off the 2021-2022 season with Almost, Maine, John Cariani’s romantic comedy about love found and love lost over one slightly magical winter night.

Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Burnett Center on the Bethany campus. Tickets are $5 at the door. There is no charge for Bethany College students, faculty, and staff with ID.

Bethany College Theatre opens season with 'Almost, Maine'

ABILENE - Memorial Health System (MHS) the hiring of a general surgeon: Christopher Young, M.D.

Young attended the University of Sydney where he received his M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) in 1987. From 1997 to 1999, Young completed a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.&nbsp; During this time his son was born, which ultimately played a part in their family’s return to the states all these years later. In 2006, Young earned his M.S. (Master of Surgery), also from the University of Sydney. Over the last 30 years, Young has gained an extensive list of accomplishments to include active roles in surgical education, research, and administration. He has authored more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and his textbook, “Examination Medicine: A Guide to Passing the FRACS Examination in General Surgery” is widely used among the surgical trainees.&nbsp;

Young left Australia with raving reviews from his peers and students, and no surprise he was one of Australia’s leading general and colorectal surgeons given his strong work ethic and undeniable compassion towards his career.

Young wanted to be a doctor since he was 11 years old. He said his family was very religious and strict, and though he may not have appreciated it as a child he does now. 

“My parents constantly reminded me of the importance of service to our fellow man and woman and to make the most of the short time that is given to us on earth,” Young said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With that reminder from his parents, Young became the doctor he is today. 

“I truly believe that I can make a difference in the world, even if only in my backyard. So you will find that even if I may occasionally despair, I will never stop believing or trying to make a difference and improve the lot of my patients and fellow man by my service. I feel very lucky to not only get to do something that I enjoy immensely, but something that helps other people,” he said.

Young and his family arrived in July, and since then he has spent time getting acquainted with his new home and work environment. 

When asked how he enjoys things so far, he said, “Abilene has some of the nicest and kindest people I have ever met. It is a peaceful town with good people, and that is exactly what we were seeking. My son, wife, and I are all very happy and we hope to return the kindness shown towards us.”

Abilene's Memorial Health System welcomes new surgeon

Richard Lehane is the unit head, archives unit, at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna (Austria). He was previously manager of the Digital Archives team at State Archives NSW (Australia). After completing a Ph.D. in history, Lehane obtained his archival qualifications at the University of Liverpool before embarking on a career in the archives.

Dover Development of St. Louis has entered into an agreement to purchase a portion of the land west of the Knox Sandpit on which it would develop an assisted living center/memory care facility. The development being proposed is a 70,000 square foot facility with 58 assisted living and 22 memory care apartment units. It would be a one-story facility facing S. Ohio Street.

The project would begin construction by May 1, 2022, according to information in the city commission meeting packet. Completion of the project and the beginning of tenant leasing is anticipated to begin Nov. 1, 2021.

Other items on the city commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider authorizing the mayor to execute a limited warranty deed with reversionary and limited warrany covenants and retained easement with Salina USD 305 regarding the conveyance of real estate associated with the Jerry Ivey Park tennis courts.

●Consider authorizing the city manager to execute a contract for engineering design services with H.W. Lochner, Inc., in the amount of $196,905.05 for engineering services for the Centennial Road Improvements project.

Hearing for proposed assisted living facility bonds among city agenda items

Winter in our part of the Great Plains looks to be a bit warmer than normal with parts of the area also a bit drier than normal.

That's the word from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/">Climate Prediction Center</a>, which on Thursday issued its 2021 Winter Outlook. The outlook is for December through February.

For the second year in row, La Nina climate condition will be the force behind the forecast winter weather, the Climate Predicition Center noted.

All of Kansas has a 33-40 percent chance for above normal temperatures this winter, according to the winter outlook.

As for precipitation, much of Kansas, including our area, has an equal chance for either below-normal or above-normal precipitation. The southwest corner of the state is leaning toward a below-normal chance of precipitation, while a sliver of far southeast Kansas is leaning toward an above-normal chance for precipitation.

Drought is expected to develop across a wide swath of western and southern Kansas, while in far northwestern Kansas, drought conditions are expected to continue or worsen.

🎥Climate Prediction Center: Warmer, drier in our area this winter

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the closing of part of Lockard Road for drainage work.

Lockard Road between N. Muir Road and N. Lightville Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Tuesday for replacement of a cross-road drainage structure.  The road will be closed approximately two months. 

 Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

 </figure>The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the closing of part of Lockard Road for drainage work.Lockard Road between N. Muir Road and N. Lightville Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Tuesday for replacement of a cross-road drainage structure. The road will be closed approximately two months. Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Prevention of human trafficking will be the focus of a presentation at Kansas Wesleyan University Nov. 4.

KWU will host a presentation on human trafficking prevention by nationally known speaker Brook&nbsp;Bello at 6 p.m. Nov. 4 in Sams Chapel.&nbsp;The event is open to the public at no charge.&nbsp;In accordance with KWU’s COVID-19 policy, face coverings are required indoors regardless of vaccination status.

“Human trafficking is one of the great evils of our time,” said Allen Smith, KWU’s director of diversity and student success, who helped organize the event. “It can strike across all socioeconomic boundaries in a variety of ways and knows no limitations. We are pleased to host Dr.&nbsp;Bello&nbsp;for this seminar on educating our community regarding this scourge.”

Bello&nbsp;is the founding CEO of More Too Life, a non-profit, human trafficking reduction and survivor empowerment organization. She has earned a litany of recognitions and distinctions, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Obama White House, a Florida Advocate of the Year award and a Google Next-Gen Policy Leader.

On Oct. 24, 1940, the 40-hour work week went into effect under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.

Salina man dies after crash with a semi in Ellsworth County

Don't forget: On Sunday, you'll have to dial the area code when making a local call.

As Salina Post first reported in April, Kansans who live in area codes 785 or 620 will be required to use 10-digit dialing when making local calls beginning Sunday. If, on Sunday, you attempt to make a local call without dialing the area code, your call will not go through and a recording will inform you that your call "cannot be completed as dialed."

The dialing change is being implemented to make it easier for persons in crisis to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

In July 2020 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved 988 as the new abbreviated number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. As a result, any area code that uses the 988 prefix in telephone numbers is mandated to adopt 10-digit dialing. That includes Kansas area codes 785 and 620, which cover the majority of the state. Because of the mandate, 82 area codes in 36 states will make the change to 10-digit local dialing.

The FCC initiated a practice period in April allowing both seven-digit and 10-digit dialing to help callers adjust to the change, but that grace period ends on Sunday, with the exception of any three digit abbreviated numbers available in the community, such as 911, according to information provided by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC).

Callers will still dial 1 plus the area code and telephone number for all long distance calls.
