NWS: Strong to severe storms across part of area overnight

The City of Salina has announced that fiber optic line work will continue.

Eli Drilling will continue placing Bluebird underground fiber optic lines on Crawford Street. Work will begin on the south side of E. Crawford Street at S. Ohio Street and continue west on Crawford to S. Ninth Street.

Work will be in grass areas with minimal sidewalk closures. No road closures are expected at this time.

The fiber optic cabling and related facilities will connect existing cell towers and future 5G cell towers providing exceptional cell service and high speed networks.

BLANCHARD, Okla. (AP) — A Texas woman and her adult son have been arrested in Wyoming on murder warrants in connection with the slaying of a man in Oklahoma. 

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Friday that 47-year-old Debbie Senft and 26-year-old Zachary Mussett are jailed in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, for the death of Michael “Andy” McGuffee of Blanchard.

The OSBI says McGuffee's body was found in his home Oct. 15 by a relative after McGuffee failed to arrive for work and items missing from the home were later located in a Salina, Kansas, pawn shop. 

Court records do not list attorneys who could speak on behalf of Senft or Mussett, both from Texarkana, Texas.

The City of Salina's Friday sanitation customers won bragging rights this week.

According to information on the city's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/salina.ks.gov">Facebook page</a>, 98.9 percent of the customers along the city's Friday sanitation routes complied with the guidelines for waste collection. Coming in second were the Thursday sanitation customers, who had a 98.4 percent compliance rate. Other compliance rates were as follows: Tuesday, 97.1 percent; Wednesday, 96.8 percent; and Monday, 96.2 percent.

On Oct. 6, the city announced that beginning Monday, only waste within fully closed waste carts would be collected. The city began a soft rollout of the waste collection guidelines on July 19 in order to help "customers learn and adapt to the new guidelines."

Beginning Monday, the city began announcing on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/salina.ks.gov">Facebook page</a> the percentages of compliance on its waste collection routes, congratulating those who followed the guidelines. It posted the following message on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/salina.ks.gov">Facebook page</a> late this afternoon.

The City of Salina has announced the closing of Republic Avenue for railroad crossing repairs.

Beginning this afternoon, Republic Avenue at S. Fourth Street will be closed for railroad crossing repairs. The work is expected to be completed by Saturday evening.

Local access on each side of the crossing will be allowed but motorists should find an alternate route while work is being performed. The signed detour route will be north to Crawford Street.

The time for Christmas cheer is just around the corner! 

Tony’s Pizza Events Center and the Salina Area United Way (SAUW) are teaming up to bring A Dueling Pianos Christmas on Dec. 3.

Presented by Tony’s Pizza Events Center, A Dueling Pianos Christmas is a benefit for the Salina Area United Way’s 2022 annual campaign. In addition to the musical entertainment, a host of other activities are planned for the evening, including a full meal, silent and live auctions, and wine/whiskey pulls.

The SAUW will receive a portion of ticket sales as well as all proceeds from the night’s activities.

A Dueling Pianos Christmas, will combine music, comedy, and audience participation into a fast-paced and highly entertaining event. Songs are based completely on audience requests, giving the show a unique atmosphere. No matter what, it will be a sing-along, laugh-along, clap-along party!

Entertainment will be provided by HiFi Productions, featuring Salina native Ryan McCall, a member of regional favorite band Joe’s Pet Project.

Christmastime event to benefit Salina Area United Way

TOPEKA – Saline County Community Corrections has been awarded a grant to support public health and safety programs, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Thursday.

The organization will receive $27,432 to provide programs geared toward persons with substance abuse addictions, behavioral health illnesses, and crisis-based criminogenic thinking.

“Providing the best public safety services and crime prevention requires a dedicated staff of local officials and resources to serve our communities,” Schmidt said. “This grant will help advance local priorities for improving public safety.”

The grant is part of the Federal Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program and was awarded by the Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Schmidt serves as the chair of the council.

A Salina man who had an active warrant was arrested after he was found hiding in a closet under some clothing.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Baker Street at 9:50 p.m. Thursday for the report of a physical altercation.

They were told that James Mallett III, 34, of Salina, was involved in the altercation. One of the officers knew that Mallett had an active probation violation warrant from Saline County District Court, Forrester said.

When officers arrived, Mallett opened the door inside a locked storm door. Officers asked Mallet to come outside, but he instead shut the door. Another resident allowed officers inside, and they located Mallett in a closet under some clothing, Forrester said.

Mallett was arrested on the warrant and on a requested charge of felony interference with law enforcement officers.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday and the Saline County Sheriff's Office is partnering with Salina Regional Health Center for a drive-through drop-off location. Persons wishing to get rid of unneeded prescription drugs can drop them off in the circle drive at the main entrance of Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue, between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.

Additionally, the sheriff's office plans to have a second collection location at Dillons, 1235 E. Cloud Street from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.

If you're unable to make it to either location, you can drop off unused medications in the dropbox located in the lobby of the sheriff's office, 251 N. 10th Street, between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The intent of this ordinance is to protect people’s liberties and the small businesses who are really just families trying to make a living.&nbsp; There seems to be 3 categories of people who are strongly opposing us:

All of these groups are really stretching the imagination to come up with scenarios where this may “backfire” and they are mostly appealing to the fear group – saying that we need the city government to be able to keep us safe.&nbsp; The problem is that they are using dishonest interpretations of the ordinance.&nbsp; Read the ordinance for yourself and you can see that it does not have anything to do with first responders, it does not affect funding at all, and it doesn’t keep the city from being involved in emergency response.&nbsp; The only effect it has is that they cannot use a declared state of emergency as cover to take away our freedoms.&nbsp; Regardless of what any government thinks, our freedoms are God-given and they are not granted nor can they be taken away by the government.&nbsp; In fact, it is a more important role for the government to protect our freedom than try to find ways to protect their ability to infringe on them just for the sake of flexing power or in order to push some agenda.

So, since we are using example scenarios to attempt to sell one side of this, how about this one:

Currently, the City could use any number of emergencies to say that “for our safety”, they need to suspend the buying and selling of all firearms, or worse yet, they need to confiscate them all “temporarily”, but don’t worry “we’ll give them back”…

There are protections against the County doing that in the Kansas Emergency Management Act, but the City currently has a loophole.&nbsp; This ordinance would prevent that.

OPINION: Why you should vote Yes

On Thursday at 2:18 a.m., officers with the Salina Police Department were sent to a vehicle fire in the east parking lot of the Village Inn, 453 S. Broadway Boulevard.

On arrival, a silver 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup was observed fully engulfed in flames. Salina Fire Department crews put out the fire.

Upon inspection of the vehicle, personnel discovered this vehicle was reported stolen to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday from the 3300 block of E. Water Well Road.

The vehicle is a total loss and the estimated value was $1,500.

If you have any information concerning this incident or identification of the individual(s) involved, call Crimestoppers at 825-TIPS. You may receive a cash reward of up to $1,000. Crimestoppers seeks tips about stolen, burned pickup

I’m coming up on a transition phase in my life. I’ll be leaving the military soon, and I’ve been evaluating my living situation once I am out. My parents said I could live with them for a while, but I am not sure that would work out well. I have done some research on renting versus buying a home, but I understand that you hate VA loans. Can you clarify as to why you feel this way and give some advice for a person in my situation?

Hate&nbsp;might be a strong word for how I feel about VA loans, but there are some things you should know about them. Number one, VA loans are usually more expensive, with the interest rate and all the fees, than FHA or conventional loans. Number two, the reason most people gravitate toward a VA loan is they can get a house with no money down. But if you’re trying to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/real-estate/mortgage-calculator" target="_blank">buy a house</a>&nbsp;with no money down, it means you’re too broke to buy a house!

When you buy a house, and you’ve got no money in the bank, that house is going to be a curse instead of a blessing. What happens if you buy a home this way, and the air conditioner goes out next week? What happens if your car needs a new transmission next month? Most people who find themselves in situations like this start piling on debt to fix things, and that’s not a wise answer.

VA loans and other “no down payment” mortgage loans allow you to buy a home from a position of financial weakness rather than a position of financial strength. Don’t get me wrong, I want you to own a home someday. I just don’t want the home—and a bunch of other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">debt</a>&nbsp;stacked on top—to own&nbsp;you.

My advice is to rent a decent, affordable place for a while and concentrate on getting your new life and career off the ground while saving some money. You might even consider a roommate situation for a while to help cut costs. But you don’t need to be buying a home right now.

Today in History - Oct. 22

Salina cardiologist Mark Mikinski, MD, was recently recognized with the Legacy Award by the Kansas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology at its 8th Annual Cardiovascular Symposium held in Overland Park.

Mikiniski came to Salina in 1995 just before the consolidation of Asbury Salina Regional Medical Center and St. John’s Regional Health Center, which formed the organization now known as Salina Regional Health Center. The award recognized Mikiniski for his “extraordinary work in the field of cardiology and as a great source of&nbsp; inspiration in cardiovascular medicine.”

Mikinski was the region’s first full-time cardiologist initially focusing on diagnostic procedures and cardiac care. After cardiothoracic surgery services became available at Salina Regional in 1998, Mikinski also began providing invasive cardiology treatments like stenting and angioplasty.

To affirm its competency in providing 24/7 cardiac care to the region Salina Regional became accredited by the American College of Cardiology as a Chest Pain Center with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in 2018. More recently, the addition of structural cardiology procedures including the Watchman procedure and transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure (TAVR), were also added to the program.

The Watchman procedure is similar to a heart catheterization but, closes the left atrial appendage of the heart. For patients with atrial fibrillation – a common heart rhythm disorder – the&nbsp; procedure provides an alternative to the long term use of blood thinners. TAVR similarly uses a heart catheterization procedure to replace the aortic valve. TAVR saves many patients from having open heart surgery. Patients feel better almost immediately after TAVR and often go home the next day.

Comprehensive cardiac care services on the level available at Salina Regional are usually only found in urban areas.

“Each of these accomplishments has brought exponential growth to the program and took us to levels we’d never been able to achieve before,” Mikinski said.

While the award recognized Mikinski, he was quick to share credit with all who have impacted local cardiology care over the years.

“It’s taken a concerted effort from everyone involved to achieve what we’ve accomplished here,” Mikinski said. “None of this happens without the dedication of the entire team including our cath lab staff. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve all that we have without all these pieces in place.”

Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away.&nbsp;These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.&nbsp;Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.
