The Saline County Road and Bridge Department plans to close part of S. Kipp Road beginning Friday for drainage structure work.

S. Kipp Road between E. Cloud Street and E. Crawford Street will be closed to traffic beginning Friday for the replacement of a drainage structure. Weather permitting the roadway should be opened by Oct. 29. 

 Local drivers are asked to find alternate routes around the project area.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

SMITH COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Wednesday in Smith County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a John Deere tractor driven by David F. Renken, 66, Downs, was southbound on DD Road at 270th Road one mile east of Kansas 181 Highway.

The driver reported he could not see an eastbound 2004 Sterling AT 9500 driven by Richard F. Schmitt, 77, Cawker City, and entered the intersection.&nbsp; The vehicles collided in the intersection

EMS transported Schmitt to the Mitchell County Hospital. Renken was not injured.&nbsp; Schmitt was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man injured after truck, tractor collision

A pickup stolen from a residence southeast of Salina was found burning early this morning in west-central Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that sometime between 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, someone broke into a 2008 Buick Enclave and stole a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 from a residence in the 3300 block of E. Water Well Road. In addition to the pickup, a wallet containing a financial card and a driver's license also were taken.

At approximately 2:27 a.m. Thursday, the stolen pickup was found on fire in the parking lot of Village Inn, 453 S. Broadway Boulevard. The pickup was extensively damaged. 

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that police were still investigating the fire and that additional information would be released later.

A Salina woman was cited after a two-vehicle wreck Wednesday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Diane Hubka, 64, of Salina, was eastbound on E. Cloud Street near the intersection with Osborne Street in a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier when she rear-ended a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by Zackary Reddin, 22, of Florida, who was stopped at the red light.

Reddin was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with undisclosed minor injuries, Forrester said.

The Cavalier sustained front-end damage and the Altima sustained rear-end damage. Both were able to be driven away.

Forrester said Hubka was cited for inattentive driving.

Driver injured in 2-vehicle accident; Salina woman cited

No one was injured in a vehicle fire northwest of Salina late Wednesday night.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that a Clay Center man was pulling a trailer with a 1991 Chevrolet Suburban when the Suburban developed some problems near the intersection of Kansas Highway 143 and U.S. Highway 81. The man pulled over, called a friend to pick him up, and unloaded some items, Melander said.

Shortly after 11 p.m., deputies and firefighter from Rural Fire District No. 7 were dispatched to the location of the Suburban because it was ablaze. Melander said the engine compartment of the Suburban was damaged and the interior was destroyed. The trailer was not damaged.

Melander said it appeared that the fire started due to an electrical malfunction.

The ordinance on Salina's ballot November 2 would remove the City’s ability to take action to protect public health and safety.

The 4% of voters who petitioned this ordinance claim to be against Big Government.&nbsp; Ironically, if passed and ruled constitutional, it would instead pass more local governance to the next bigger entities, the County and the State. &nbsp;Not only is City Government closer to the people, its elections are less likely to be biased by party loyalty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

City elections remain non-partisan, so citizens choose Commissioners on the basis of qualification, not party, therefore hopefully less partisan.&nbsp; Yest this is the body the petitioners want to strip of power.&nbsp;&nbsp; It seems illogical.&nbsp; 

&nbsp;In addition, Commissioners can change over time, but if passed, this ordinance could not be challenged by citizen petition for 10 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The petitioned ordinance calls for formal County or State Declarations of Emergency, which are not instantaneous and bogged down by procedure.&nbsp; We don’t have days or weeks, when action is required in 1-5 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ordinance term “emergency” is unclear and uninformed. Such vague language puts all citizens at risk.&nbsp; Future emergencies could be, but are not limited to, tornado, flood, jet crash, fire, industrial&nbsp;accident, or another pandemic. On its own property (parks, etc.), elected city&nbsp;commissioners could neither set nor enforce rules regarding&nbsp;group size, curfew, or restricted behavior.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In such cases, especially, it would create law enforcement confusion. &nbsp;For example, will the sheriff’s office dictate the actions of the Police Department?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Finally, this petition is allegedly to protect individuals and businesses from mandates.&nbsp; Yet at least one small Salina retail business is now closed for several months, its owner out of hospital but fighting ongoing complications.&nbsp;&nbsp; Whether for or against vaccine and masks , the owners were unlucky enough to be Covid victims. &nbsp;They got it, eliminating at least temporarily a valuable service to the community,&nbsp;now possibly in its death throes.&nbsp; &nbsp;It could have been avoided with 80% vaccination and mask wearing. 

The key issue is government’s ability to keep all businesses and citizens safe and healthy.&nbsp;&nbsp; Whether we like it or not, we are under attack by a global pandemic.&nbsp; Local action has global consequences.&nbsp; We cannot allow this petition’s threat to public safety and health.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Former mayors, commissioners urge 'no' vote

WICHITA – October is Car Care Month, which takes on a whole new meaning this year in the wake of the pandemic. The Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary installed new officers at their annual membership brunch on Oct. 11, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Church. 

The theme of this year’s program was "Volunteers the Heart of the Community."

A welcome was given by President Emma Doherty.&nbsp; Invocation was given by Pastor Delvin Strecker, St John's Lutheran church.&nbsp; Musical entertainment was presented by Arnie and Jean Boyd from Chapman, Kansas.&nbsp; Marsha Haskett, Director of Volunteers/Gift Shop Manager shared updates of the Gift Shop and that the volunteers have new blue vests they wear while volunteering.&nbsp;

Treasurer Brenda Smith gave the 2020-2021 financial report sharing her appreciation for memberships and extra donations to the auxiliary.&nbsp; Sally Emerson, President of the Kansas Hospital Volunteers, spoke on the values of hospital volunteers for our patients, families, and guests.

Sally Emerson than installed the new officers for SRHC Service Auxiliary - President Sandy McIntire, President-Elect Bonnie Anderson, Secretary Margaret Robertson, Treasurer Brenda Smith, and Past President Emma Doherty.

Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary installs new officers

Don't forget: On Sunday, you'll have to dial the area code when making a local call.

As Salina Post first reported in April, Kansans who live in area codes 785 or 620 will be required to use 10-digit dialing when making local calls beginning Sunday. If, on Sunday, you attempt to make a local call without dialing the area code, your call will not go through and a recording will inform you that your call "cannot be completed as dialed."

The dialing change is being implemented to make it easier for persons in crisis to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

In July 2020 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved 988 as the new abbreviated number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. As a result, any area code that uses the 988 prefix in telephone numbers is mandated to adopt 10-digit dialing. That includes Kansas area codes 785 and 620, which cover the majority of the state. Because of the mandate, 82 area codes in 36 states will make the change to 10-digit local dialing.

The FCC initiated a practice period in April allowing both seven-digit and 10-digit dialing to help callers adjust to the change, but that grace period ends on Sunday, with the exception of any three digit abbreviated numbers available in the community, such as 911, according to information provided by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC). 

Callers will still dial 1 plus the area code and telephone number for all long distance calls.

With the switch to 10-digit dialing about to take effect, residents are encouraged to make sure any services with automatic dialing equipment, such as life safety systems, medical monitoring devices, security systems and fire alarms, mobile phone contact lists and call forwarding settings are reprogrammed if needed.

Beginning July 16, 2022, callers can reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling 988. Until then, callers will continue to dial 1-800-273-8255 (TALK), the KCC noted.

Great Plains Manufacturing has announced James Shurts as the Great Plains Ag Division vice president of sales and marketing. In his new role, Shurts will have combined responsibility for the Product Management, Marketing, Training, and Sales departments. 

This new team approach is intended to further the effectiveness of strategic planning, preparation, and implementation of new product launches and to enhance customer and dealer support.

Shurts joined Great Plains Manufacturing in 2020 as the senior manager of product management. Prior to his time at Great Plains, he worked as the chief operating officer at Tribine Harvester, LLC, Newton, and the director of operations for AGCO Corporation, Duluth, Ga. Shurts attended the U.S. Naval Academy and received a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural engineering from Kansas State University and an Master of Business Administration from Friends University. Shurts is certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt and a Lean and Kaizen Facilitator.

In his personal time, Shurts enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He is active on his family farm near Beloit, and enjoys participating in adventure races and hiking.

Salina Public Schools will begin a Test to Stay/Learn/Play/Participate program. The program officially begins Sunday.

Through this program, students and staff who are quarantined due to a school COVID-19 exposure will be able to get tested in the morning or evening each weekday, and in the evening on Sundays. As long as those tests are negative, participants are not symptomatic and they wear a mask, they can attend school and school activities in person.

The goal of the program’s modified quarantine is to keep more students and staff in classrooms, learning and teaching every day.

Student participation forms require parent/guardian signatures. The program is offered in collaboration with the Saline County Health Department (SCHD) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). All COVID-19 test results will be reported to SCHD and KDHE. The district has applied for a state grant to pay for the program supplies and extra staffing costs.

This program offers another option that families can choose if their student needs to quarantine due to close contact exposure at school.

USD 305 to begin modified COVID-19 quarantine program

The overhead structure from the Campbell Plaza stage made it to its new home a block and a half north.

Unruh House Moving of Galva transported the structure from Campbell Plaza north on Fifth Street to E. Ash Street, then west on Ash Street to the parking lot on the southwest corner of the Ash Street/N. Santa Fe Avenue intersection.

There it will be installed as a stage covering for a new plaza the city is developing at that location, according to information from the city. The new plaza is scheduled to be completed in March of 2022.

The structure was removed from Campbell Plaza as part of an agreement between the city and Wheat State Hospitality, Inc., which is developing the property at 123 S. Santa Fe Avenue that adjoins Campbell Plaza on the north for what it says is the "unofficial downtown front porch." 

Wheat State Hospitality, Inc., plans to open the Prickly Pear Grill &amp; Cantina, a Tex-Mex infused eating and entertainment venue that will include outdoor seating on Campbell Plaza.

"The Prickly Pear Grill &amp; Cantina will provide a comfortable, family friendly environment that will include indoor and outdoor seating in addition to frequent live music performed by popular regional acts," Wheat State Hospitality, Inc., told Salina Post in May.

The Salina City Commission on May 17 paved the way for the Prickly Pear concept to open when the commission authorized the city manager to execute a licensing agreement and a transferee agreement with Wheat State Hospitality, Inc., for the use of Campbell Plaza.

According to Wheat State Hospitality, Inc., the Prickly Pear Grill &amp; Cantina will feature:

•Chef-inspired Tex-Mex menu with oversized salads, loaded tacos, and mouth-watering over-the-top hamburgers.

•Extensive bar menu with a hand-picked selection of bottle and draft beers and “soon-to-be-famous margaritas.”

•Convenient online ordering from its pick-up and go menu.

•Regular live music nights in the warmer seasons with well-known area musicians.

•Indoor, outdoor and rooftop seating, offering the best place to meet throughout the year.

🎥Campbell Plaza stage overhead structure moves to new home

A teen driver was injured in a single-vehicle rollover accident Tuesday evening east of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a 17-year-old rural Saline County boy was northbound on S. Simpson Road in a 2008 Ford F150 when the pickup went off the east side of the road. The boy overcorrected, causing the pickup to cross the road, strike a mailbox, and go off the west side of the road, rolling once before coming to rest on its wheels. The accident occurred at approximately 6:23 p.m. Tuesday 600 feet north of the S. Simpson Road/E. Schilling Road intersection.

The boy, who sustained numerous cuts and a possible broken rib, was transported by private car to Salina Regional Health Center, Soldan said.

Assaria's Farmada to be featured in ag equipment webinar

I am the fifth generation to farm one of our pieces of ground, which is quite a heritage to live up to. I have often wondered what it would be like to not be tied to a place, a way of living and a lifestyle. Those thoughts are very fleeting because who I am is very much tied to the land and the history associated with it. Like my ancestors I have a passion for farming and ranching. I know I am not alone in my thoughts, in fact, I am very much in the majority when it comes to farmers and ranchers. Often our farms have been in our families for generations, the land is part of us. It defines who we are. I know my family has put decades and generations of blood, sweat and tears into building what we have, and I do not want to be the last generation, but it all might be in jeopardy if we lose stepped-up basis, and important tool family farms and ranches use to pass assets on to the next generation. I also suspect my feelings go beyond the farm and echo up and down Main Street in our towns. I can think of lumberyards, grocery stores, clothing stores and many other local multigenerational businesses our communities depend on that are facing the same danger of being swallowed up to pay taxes if we do not make our voices heard. We have all heard that farmers live poor and die rich, and never has that been truer than when it comes to the farm itself. Often bought 100 years or more ago for much less than it is worth today, especially if you are like me and farm next to a growing urban population. My great-grandparents, grandparents and parents paid their taxes and yet we are told simply because we will inherit the farm we have to pay even more in taxes, it does not make sense. We do not want to sell our heritage, but we could have to choose between selling or going into more debt. With already tight margins that is not going to work, and it could bring on my very worst fear, the end of our family farm. I do not mean to be gloom and doom, but it is definitely time that each of us get involved and tell our story. Even if our legislators support our views and share them, it is time for them to hear from each of you. It is also time to get involved with Kansas Farm Bureau. Our family farms are in the crosshairs for this massive tax increase because we are such a small percentage of the population and therefore and easy target. Singularly our voices are important, and we should make them heard. However, we are much more effective when we band together. Kansas Farm Bureau is that collective voice that represents all types and sizes of agriculture. The call to action is now and we must all join together to protect our way of life and our heritage.

I have often wondered what it would be like to not be tied to a place, a way of living and a lifestyle. Those thoughts are very fleeting because who I am is very much tied to the land and the history associated with it. Like my ancestors I have a passion for farming and ranching. I know I am not alone in my thoughts, in fact, I am very much in the majority when it comes to farmers and ranchers. Often our farms have been in our families for generations, the land is part of us. It defines who we are. I know my family has put decades and generations of blood, sweat and tears into building what we have, and I do not want to be the last generation, but it all might be in jeopardy if we lose stepped-up basis, and important tool family farms and ranches use to pass assets on to the next generation. I also suspect my feelings go beyond the farm and echo up and down Main Street in our towns. INSIGHT: Stepping up for the family farm

Tickets are now on sale for the next finalist-conducted Salina Symphony concert.

The Salina Symphony will present a program that celebrates
resilience and brings hope on Nov. 7 at 4 p.m.
at the Stiefel Theatre.

The concert will be conducted by Mélisse Brunet, one of five talented finalists vying for the title
of music director and conductor.&nbsp;

The program
will feature soprano Janie Brokenicky, of Manhattan, on Charles Gounod’s Ah!
Je veux vivre from Romeo and Juliet. Brokenicky will also be featured,
along with narration by the Reverend Allen Smith, of Salina, on Dolores White’s
inspiring tone poem, Give Birth to the Dream, based on Maya Angelou’s On the
Pulse of Morning. The symphony will also perform Camille Saint-Saen’s lively Danse
macabre&nbsp; and Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Women, No. 1. The concert
will conclude with Beethoven’s thrilling Symphony No. 7.

French conductor Brunet
is quickly gaining attention on both sides of the Atlantic as a “skilled and
polished conductor with panache”&nbsp;(<a href="http://ClevelandClassical.com">ClevelandClassical.com</a>). She is the
music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, an orchestra of
freelance musicians from the NYC and Philadelphia areas.

Brunet was recently selected as
a finalist in the La Maestra International Competition for Women Conductors
(Paris), earning a prestigious spot after a preliminary round of 202 applicants.
A protégée of Pierre Boulez, she was one of the six conductors selected for the
2018 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, chosen for their “experience,
talent, leadership potential, and commitment to a career in service to American
orchestras.” In 2017, she was one of the six women conductors chosen for the
international Hart Institute for Women Conductors at the Dallas Opera.

As a dynamic advocate of contemporary music, Brunet has
collaborated with composers such as J.T. Cole, Steven Stucky, Michael Daugherty
and Jennifer Higdon, among others. In 2014, she was a selected conductor at the
prestigious Cabrillo Festival for new music in California.

As an opera and music-theatre conductor, Brunet has
conducted&nbsp;Dead Man Walking&nbsp;by Jake Heggie and Puccini’s&nbsp;Gianni Schicchi&nbsp;at
the Power Center in Ann Arbor; four staged performances of Mozart’s&nbsp;Die Zauberflöte;
and Bernstein’s&nbsp;Trouble in Tahiti,&nbsp;Menotti’s&nbsp;The Old Maid and the Thief,&nbsp;Sondheim’s&nbsp;Sweeney Todd, and
Strauss II’s&nbsp;Die Fledermaus&nbsp;in Boone, NC.

Brunet recently won the position of director of orchestral
activities at the University of Iowa School of Music, where she conducts the
orchestras in symphonic concerts, operas and musical theater as well as teach
orchestral conducting to master and doctorate students. From 2016-2021, she
held the same position at the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State
University and received the prestigious 2019 Outstanding Teaching Excellence
Award. 

A native of Paris, Brunet began her studies on the cello and
also learned to play the trumpet, French horn and piano. She holds diplomas
from the Paris Conservatory and the Université la Sorbonne as well as a
professional studies diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a
doctorate in conducting from the University of Michigan. 

Soprano Brokenicky,&nbsp;whose voice has
been described as “rich and versatile,”&nbsp;has been a featured soloist at the Meyerson
Symphony Hall (Dallas), Kauffman Center and Folly Theater (Kansas City). Additionally, she has been a guest artist with the Wichita Chamber
Chorale, Hays Symphony Orchestra, Flint Hills Masterworks Chorale, and served six
summers&nbsp;as artist-in-residence for the Ad Astra Summer Music Festival. Brokenicky
enjoyed several collaborations with the K-State symphony while on the vocal
faculty, and in 2017 took on the infamous role of The Queen of the Night in
the&nbsp;KSU production of Mozart’s&nbsp;The Magic Flute.&nbsp;In 2018,&nbsp;she
collaborated with the Wichita Grand Opera as a guest soloist for both their
Opera on the Lake production and&nbsp;Chris Mann: Home for Christmas, Part 2.
This past summer, she performed in the world premiere of the opera&nbsp;Our
Trudy, commissioned for the sesquicentennial Prairiesta celebration in
Russell.

Brokenicky serves as the&nbsp;vocal music director
at Rock Creek High School. She is also the executive director and co-founder of
the Flint Hills Children’s Choirs, Manhattan.
