Police are looking for a driver who led an officer on a sometimes high-speed chase after the officer attempted to stop the vehicle in west Salina Sunday evening.
At approximately 6:20 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of Beverly Drive, an officer saw a black 2006 Mazda 6 with an expired tag. The officer attempted to stop the car in the 600 block of Elgin Drive, but the car took off as the officer approached it, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.
The pursuit took the following route, Forrester said.
●West on Elgin Drive
●North on Jameson Avenue
●West on Beverly Drive
●South on Centennial Road, where speeds reached approximately 75 mph
●East on W. Republic Avenue
●South on Pontiac Avenue
The officer then lost sight of the vehicle, Forrester said.
At about that same time, police started receiving calls about a black vehicle with only three wheels in the 1500 block of Cloud Circle. Officers found the Mazda there.
A witness reported seeing a light-skinned male with tattoos who was carrying a backpack leave the vehicle.
By back tracing the gouge marks made by the car, officers were able to determine that it had driven through a yard in the 1100 block of Cloud Circle. It also struck a decorative light post in the 1400 block of Cloud Circle. Additionally, officers determined that near the intersection of Elgin Drive and Beverly Drive, the car hit a guy wire on a power pole.
The driver remains at large, Forrester said.
