At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Monday night&nbsp;March 31, the Salina Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 629 E. Neal. Initial reports indicated a fire in the attached garage of the residence.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered an active fire in the garage of a single-story home. Firefighters initiated suppression operations and discovered the garage contents fully engulfed in flames, with fire spreading to the attic space above. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes of arrival.&nbsp;Firefighters&nbsp;also&nbsp;conducted a thorough search to ensure no one remained inside.

The fire is considered accidental, but due to extensive damage, the exact cause remains undetermined&nbsp;at this time.

In addition to the Salina Fire Department, the Salina Police Department provided traffic control, Evergy and Kansas Gas were requested to secure utilities. The Salvation Army was also contacted to assist the residents with temporary resources.

The timeless charm of four-part harmony will take center stage next week as the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad celebrates&nbsp;National Barbershop Quartet Day&nbsp;with a special dinner train experience.

On Saturday, April 12, passengers aboard the&nbsp;Smoky Valley Limited&nbsp;will be treated to live performances from three standout Kansas barbershop groups:&nbsp;“Four Gems”&nbsp;from Manhattan,&nbsp;“Uncalled Four”&nbsp;from Colby, and&nbsp;“Chardonnay”, also from Manhattan. These quartets will bring the pure, heartfelt sounds of barbershop singing to life as the train winds its way across the scenic Smoky Hill River Valley.

Barbershop music, with roots tracing back nearly 175 years, got its start in the informal gathering places of American barbershops and has since grown into a beloved and enduring musical tradition.

The two-hour round-trip ride departs at 6 p.m. from Abilene’s historic Rock Island Depot and includes a stop at the Hoffman Mill and Country Store in Enterprise. Guests will enjoy a catered meal from Broadway Station in Herington, with a choice of barbecue pork chops or barbecue chicken breast.

National Barbershop Quartet Day celebration rolls into Abilene 

Two runaway juveniles are facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing from a Salina store, taking a backpack valued at more than $2,000, and later being connected to two smoke shop burglaries, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman.

The investigation began around 2:20 p.m. on March 28, when officers were dispatched to Dollar General, 840 E. Crawford, regarding two male juveniles reportedly caught attempting to steal a Lunchable. Employees stopped the shoplifting attempt and had the juveniles leave the store.

As they exited, the pair allegedly stole a backpack left outside by an 18-year-old customer. The backpack contained a baseball glove, laptop, clothing, and a medical device. The total loss was estimated at over $2,000.

Officers searched the area and determined the juveniles matched the description of two males recently reported as runaways from a local group home. They were found in the 300 block of Center Street and taken into custody. While they did not have the backpack at the time, officers later located it behind a nearby business in the 800 block of E. Crawford. All items were recovered except for the medical device.

The 15 and 16-year-old juveniles were charged with felony theft and theft. According to Feldman, they were not booked into the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City at that time.

At around 5 a.m. on March 31, officers responded to a burglary alarm at VIP Smoke Shop, 2018 S. 9th Street. The front door had been shattered with a rock, and more than $2,500 worth of merchandise, including vapes and other tobacco products, was reported stolen. Damage to the storefront was estimated at $2,000.

Later that morning, around 8:40 a.m., a School Resource Officer was contacted by school staff after a student was caught smoking in a restroom. When questioned, the student identified the same two juveniles as the source of the vape.

Through the investigation, officers connected the pair to the VIP Smoke Shop burglary, as well as an earlier break-in at Pack Rat Smoke Shop, 659 S. Broadway, on March 10. Items from the VIP burglary were recovered.

Following the March 31 incident, both juveniles were charged with two counts of burglary, one count of felony damage to property, one count of misdemeanor damage to property, and two counts of felony theft. They were then booked into the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City.

SPD: Runaway juveniles linked to multiple thefts and smoke shop burglaries

For those who are still in it, cutting through the chaos is one way out, even though the chaos is confusing, on purpose. In Topeka or D.C., just following bills is, well, debilitating.

Near-daily executive orders are in reality executive&nbsp;disorders. But we can wake to this truth. It’s not conservatism — it’s corruption. On steroids. Remember the frog in first lukewarm, then boiling water? The heat is coming up, less gradually every day. Will we jump out in time? Every day reduces the chance.

Through the fog, we must fully grasp — and admit — where we are. Unfortunately, President Trump’s mindset is easy to discern.

As felon-in-chief, he&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/07/us/politics/trump-justice-dept-ousters.html" target="_blank">continues to purge</a>&nbsp;the Justice Department. In the nouveau regime, crimes are not crimes if they say they’re not. They’ll first get rid of the people who once said they were. Removing truth-tellers’ salary, pension and security detail should do it. In short, they’ll make opponents’ lives as miserable and insecure as possible.

No more wasting money on the little people. They’re on their way to cut our Social Security and Medicaid, and perhaps Medicare. The co-president of Public Citizen, weighing in on Trump’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-social-security-lies" target="_blank">Social Security lies</a>&nbsp;in his address to Congress, said these are “the prelude to vicious cuts.”

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) summed it up: “This is their core agenda. (It’s) reverse Roosevelt. They are no longer even hiding it.”

Farmers, consumers and the entire economy are terrorized with tariffs, at the whim of Trump’s on/off button. (Pick your news source.)

National Republicans’ lockstep mentality is echoed by the Kansas’ monopoly party. Kansas legislative leadership seeks to dilute the vote by deluding the people. They and their docile (or worse, complicit) gang of enabler-legislators seek to block troublesome votes by removing the three-day&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/01/23/kansas-senate-bill-would-set-election-day-deadline-for-mail-in-ballots/">mail ballot grace period</a>, shutting out thousands of votes.

They would make our Supreme Court&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/03/07/kansas-senate-adopts-plan-to-elect-supreme-court-justices-a-step-toward-overturning-abortion-rights/">selection by election</a>, with justices bought by the same mega-donor dollars that installed them. This would chill rights to education and women’s reproductive freedom.

How does this get a pass from the public? By misinformation. By appealing to collective (mostly white) prejudice. And by assaulting and defunding education, especially higher ed. Universities are called universities for a reason. Designed to promote universal understanding and values in education, too often they have suffered at the whim of moneyed interests. Public financing is key to even private college funding.

Nonetheless, the Trump Administration just&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gp979w055o" target="_blank">cut $400 million</a>&nbsp;from Columbia University’s budget, drastically affecting “research and other critical functions, impacting students, faculty, staff, research, and patient care” because students took a stand for Palestine. This is a blow. More than a quarter of Columbia’s $6.6 billion in annual operating revenue&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/07/nyregion/trump-administration-columbia-grants-cancelled-antisemitism.html" target="_blank">comes from federal sources</a>, according to its 2024 financial statements.

Call it what it is. Mafia thuggery and bullying, until universities knuckle under.

The Kansas Legislature monopoly party marches in lockstep with their congressional colleagues. Salina’s Republican Rep Steven Howe got off on a good foot with his appeal for Republicans to<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/01/15/a-kansas-legislator-stands-against-trump-and-jan-6-violence-will-his-fellow-republicans-listen/">re-examine their votes</a>for Donald Trump come the 2024 election.

However, he was shortly back on the bandwagon. Howe’s&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/01/31/bill-restricting-dei-returns-to-kansas-legislature-amid-debate-over-ideology-pronouns/">crusade and “investigation”</a>against universities’ diversity, equity and inclusion policies put him firmly in the Trump camp and resulted in that witch-hunt becoming state law.

This year, Howe introduced a bill aimed at&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/02/10/kansas-house-bill-strives-to-strip-property-interest-from-definition-of-university-college-tenure/">weakening tenure protections</a>&nbsp;at Kansas universities. His action was “at the behest of Steven Lovett, general counsel at Emporia State University,” where 30 tenured or tenure-track professors were fired in 2022. ESU is “embroiled in state and federal court battles” as a result. Lovett’s seeming conflict of interest in this action was questioned, even by an ESU spokeswoman.

There is little doubt whose side Howe is on. He even moved in his House committee “to add $2.2 million to the ESU budget for legal expenses in (Lovett’s) faculty firing case.

Spreading chaos and retribution is also blatantly obvious in Trump’s complete board replacement of the Kennedy Center.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/trump-kennedy-center-laura-ingraham-maria-bartiromo-rcna195468" target="_blank">He named himself board chair</a>&nbsp;for the country’s premier performing arts center, now to become the Trump Center for the Conforming Arts. In that action, he decried DEI and the center’s leadership and performances. It might feature WWE wrestling next.

As Nietzsche said, “Distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful.”

Once we get past denial, this bullying culture must be faced up to, to face them down. It can be as simple as&nbsp;no. As a legal immigrant friend of mine said yesterday, “The more&nbsp;no’s&nbsp;they get, the smaller they become.”

By SALINA POST The National Weather Service in Wichita is urging Kansans to stay weather-aware as severe storms are expected to develop Tuesday evening and continue into early Wednesday morning.

Forecasters say the primary threats include large hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall and the possibility of tornadoes.&nbsp;

The timing of the storms will vary by location:

• 6 to 10 p.m. for areas in central Kansas, including Salina, Great Bend, and Concordia

• 8 p.m. to midnight for locations farther east, such as Hutchinson, Emporia, and Topeka

• 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. for southeastern Kansas, including Wichita, Chanute, and Coffeyville

The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor the <a href="https://www.weather.gov/">latest forecasts </a>and have multiple ways to receive warning information, especially overnight when storms may strike while people are asleep.

This round of storms could impact evening travel and overnight safety, so preparations should be made early. Local emergency management officials recommend charging mobile devices, securing outdoor items, and reviewing severe weather safety plans.

NWS: severe storms likely Tuesday evening

Just before noon on Sunday, March 30, the Salina Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Roadway Inn, located at 3932 S. 9th Street. While en route, dispatch received 911 calls confirming an active fire on the third floor, with hotel occupants still inside the building.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered moderate smoke on the third floor and discovered a small active fire in room 310. The hotel's sprinkler system had activated, containing the fire to its point of origin. Salina Police Officers, who were among the first on the scene, assisted in ensuring all occupants safely evacuated.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a lithium battery in a rechargeable flashlight. While the fire damage was confined to the room of origin, water damage was reported in several rooms on the first and second floors.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported among hotel guests or emergency personnel.

The Salina Fire Department commends the quick actions of hotel staff, law enforcement, and fire crews, which contributed to a safe and effective response.

SFD: Lithium battery sparks hotel fire at Roadway Inn

Two people were injured late Saturday night after a car struck a barricade on Interstate 135 in Saline County.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, the crash occurred at approximately 11:02 p.m. Saturday. A 2013 Cadillac Allante was traveling southbound on I-135 when the driver, identified as 33-year-old Aidee Ramirez of Wichita, is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel. 

The vehicle struck a barricade at the beginning of a construction zone in the median.

Ramirez and her 13-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the vehicle, were both injured in the crash. They were transported by Salina EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Two injured after vehicle crash on I-135 in Saline County

Kansas Department of Transportation

On Monday, April 7, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin bridge repair work on southbound I-135 over I-70 in Saline County.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane in the work zone. The eastbound I-70 entrance ramp from southbound U.S. 81/I-135 will be closed to traffic as well as the entrance ramp to southbound I-135 from westbound I-70.

Southbound U.S. 81/I-135 traffic wanting to go east on I-70 will be guided to follow the signed detour to exit 95B, westbound I-70 and exit 249, Halstead Road. Westbound I-70 traffic wanting to go south on I-135 will be guided to detour at exit 249, Halstead Road and exit 250A, southbound I-135. (See attached maps.)

Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. and Subsidiaries, of Wichita, is the prime contractor for this $638,000 project, which is scheduled to be completed in July, weather permitting.

Bridge repair at I-135, I-70 to begin April 7 in Saline County

The Friends of the Salina Public Library, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sponsoring and supplementing Salina Public Library’s programs and events, is proud to award college scholarships to two high school seniors who have volunteered in the library’s Youth Services department and the Friends’ used book sales.

The scholarships are named in honor of Joe McKenzie, former Library Director, who retired in 2017 after 40 years of service.

The 2025 Joe McKenzie Youth Scholarship recipients are:

Jasmine Kassem – awarded a $1,500 scholarship. Jasmine is a senior at Salina Central High School, where she serves as Student Body Vice President and National Honor Society Secretary. She is also active in the Salina Central Band, a Link Leader, and President of the French Club. Jasmine plans to attend Tulane University to major in Business Management. She is the daughter of Chad and Lydia Kassem.

Dennette Gent – awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Dennette is a senior at Ell-Saline High School and a member of the National Honor Society. She is also involved in the Salina Youth Symphony. She plans to attend McPherson College, majoring in Biology with a minor in Music. Her parents are Dennis and Darla Gent.

The Friends of the Library commend these outstanding students for their dedication to academics, extracurricular activities, and community service. Get ready, Salina! Week of the Young Child® is just around the corner, bringing a fantastic lineup of activities designed to celebrate young children and highlight the importance of early learning. This annual celebration, sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), is a time to shine a light on the needs of young children and their families while recognizing the early childhood programs and educators who support them.

Since its establishment in 1971, the Week of the Young Child® has served as a reminder that the early years—from birth through age 8—are the foundation for a child's success in school and life. It’s also a time for communities to come together to find new ways to support young learners and their families. Salina is marking the occasion with a week of engaging events, and families with young children won’t want to miss out!

Kick off the week with Music Monday, where children can sing, dance, and explore the joy of music. More than just fun, music helps children develop early literacy skills, stay active, and bond with family and friends.

Mix it Up! at Crossroads 800 Building | 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Join Central Kansas Extension District and Central Kansas Mental Health for a hands-on cooking experience! Kids will get to create their own trail mix while learning about nutrition, literacy, and science. Cooking together is a wonderful way to promote healthy habits and family connections.

Puzzle and Play at Kid’s Creative Corners | 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Teamwork makes the dream work! When children build and play together, they develop important social and problem-solving skills. This event will feature puzzles and cooperative activities to help children practice collaboration in a fun and engaging way.

Anything but a Paintbrush! at Saline County Health Department | 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Get creative with an open-ended art project where kids can experiment with different tools to create their masterpieces! Artistic activities help children develop fine motor skills, decision-making abilities, and imagination.

NEWMAN: Celebrate Week of the Young Child; in Salina with fun-filled events

Bethany College raised more than $240,000 during its annual Giving Day and Bethany Backers campaigns, with every dollar contributing to student success.

The 2025 Giving Day campaign alone brought in $168,167.87, all of which will go directly toward student scholarships. The funds help make a Bethany education more accessible and ensure more students can benefit from the college’s life-changing opportunities.

In a new approach this year, the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/507716769729404/">Bethany Backers</a> campaign—which supports various student programs and initiatives—was held separately. Together, the two efforts surpassed last year’s collective fundraising total, a sign of the strong support from alumni, friends of the college, and the broader Lindsborg community.

“Both Giving Day and the Bethany Backers campaign have been an incredible success,” said Hayley Samford, Director of Alumni Development and Engagement. “We are incredibly grateful for the continued generosity of our alumni, friends, and supporters. We’re excited to use these funds to support the students who are here now—and those who will be joining the Bethany family soon.”

Salina and surrounding communities will see a significant increase in military presence over the coming weeks as more than 600 service members arrive to take part in Jaded Thunder, a comprehensive joint-service training exercise.

Personnel from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and U.S. Special Operations Command will train together, focusing on seamless joint-force operations and mission integration.

The Salina Regional Airport’s location near the Smoky Hill Weapons Range provides a key strategic advantage for this type of advanced training. Operating directly from the airport allows military aircraft to minimize transit time and maximize valuable training hours over the range in coordination with ground forces.

"The combination of the Smoky Hill Weapons Range and the Salina Regional Airport offers unmatched access for realistic training scenarios," said Pieter Miller, Salina Airport Authority Executive Director. "The continued support from the local community also plays a vital role in making this location ideal for military readiness exercises."

Residents may notice increased aircraft activity and occasional noise from the range as military units employ training ordnance throughout the exercise. Salina’s Air Traffic Control Tower will oversee all flight operations, ensuring safe and coordinated use of the airspace.

The cuts could lead to nearly 30,000 jobs lost across Missouri and Kansas health care systems and food suppliers, a new study found.

As Congress looks to cut billions of dollars in federal spending over the next decade, states are anxiously awaiting how current proposed cuts to Medicaid and other programs may impact their own budgets and benefits their residents receive.&nbsp;

The Republican-controlled Congress is asking committees to slash their budgets over the next decade by $1.5 trillion and pay for a $4.5 trillion extension of tax cuts endorsed by President Donald Trump in 2017. Those tax cuts largely benefit corporations and wealthy Americans.&nbsp;

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said in an analysis that to cut the amount of spending the Trump administration is requesting,&nbsp;<a href="https://thebeaconnews.org/stories/2025/03/03/medicaid-cuts-missouri-mo-healthnet/">cuts to Medicaid</a>&nbsp;and Medicare are inevitable.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/house-budget-resolution-republicans/">Under the plan</a>&nbsp;proposed by the House of Representatives, Medicaid, the joint federal and state program that helps with medical costs for people whose income and resources are very limited, could be subject to $880 billion in cuts over the next 10 years.&nbsp;

And the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food benefits to low-income families, would see about $230 billion in cuts over the same period.&nbsp;

The plan could result in a $95 billion loss in federal funding for states in 2026 alone, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2025/mar/how-cuts-medicaid-snap-could-trigger-job-loss-state-revenue">new report from the Commonwealth Fund</a>. And as the details are ironed out, the report shows that Missouri and Kansas have plenty on the line when it comes to their federal funding and potential economic slowdown in their states.&nbsp;

Missouri could see a $2 billion reduction in federal funding across Medicaid and SNAP over the next decade, according to the report. 

Kansas, which has not expanded Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act and receives less federal money as a result, stands to lose $485 million in federal funds over the same period.&nbsp;

Researchers at the Commonwealth Fund, a group that studies health care access, also found that the downstream economic effects of potential cuts could mean more than a $2.4 billion hit in Missouri’s gross domestic product in 2026 alone. 

In Kansas, the cuts could amount to $556 million in economic losses through ripple effects such as cuts to jobs in hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores, agriculture and more.&nbsp;

“If a nurse in a hospital loses her job because of a cutback, then that means she can’t afford to do things like pay her rent or pay her grocery bills,” said Leighton Ku, one of the study’s lead researchers and the director of the Center for Health Policy Research at George Washington University. “So there are repercussions that ripple through the rest of the economy.”&nbsp;

What’s at stake with cuts in Missouri and Kansas

The study found that if $880 billion in federal Medicaid funding were to go away, each state would see an 11.8% reduction in federal spending.&nbsp;

For SNAP, states could see a 20.6% reduction in federal SNAP dollars.&nbsp;

In Missouri, direct health care jobs are estimated to see the biggest losses, with an estimated 11,300 jobs cut as a result of the change in spending. Combined with other potential job loss as a result of Medicaid cuts, nearly 22,000 would be lost.&nbsp;

“The way us economists think about it,” said Timothy McBride, a health economist at Washington University in St. Louis, “is that spending on one side is matched by income on another. So if the federal government cuts $880 billion, that’s $880 billion in revenue to hospitals, doctors and drug companies or managed care companies.”&nbsp;

Another 2,400 Missouri jobs are estimated to be lost as a result of spending changes to the SNAP program.&nbsp;

The report estimates that between cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in Missouri, the end result could mean a $2.4 billion decrease in the state’s GDP and a $175 million reduction in state and local tax revenue.&nbsp;

It’s a different picture in Kansas, where state lawmakers haven’t expanded Medicaid and fewer people are part of the program. The analysis estimates that the state could lose about $485 million in federal funds across cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.&nbsp;

Kansas could lose about 2,700 in direct health care jobs and another 2,900 food industry or other jobs.&nbsp;

“I think of both Kansas and Missouri as being agriculture food production states,” Ku said. “The people who produce food, who process food, who grow food, they’re going to suffer cutbacks to (SNAP).”&nbsp;

Food pantries are seeing threats to their federal funding from multiple directions. But because the federal government pays all of the cost for SNAP and states only match the costs for administering the program, they are worried about what it means for their ability to provide food for those most in need.&nbsp;

“For every one meal that a food bank provides, SNAP provides nine,” said Karen Siebert, the public policy and advocacy adviser at Harvesters in Kansas City. “If these costs were shifted to the states, there’s no way our state budgets on either side of the state line could absorb that.”&nbsp;

“We’re concerned that folks are going to be turning to our charitable food pantries, which do not have resources to absorb those kinds of cuts,” she said.&nbsp;

Impacts may be outsized in rural communities, where more people rely on Medicaid, SNAP &nbsp;

In both Kansas and Missouri, rural counties tend to have a higher reliance on Medicaid or SNAP than other areas of the state.&nbsp;

That means rural areas could feel the pinch from the proposed cuts more than others.&nbsp;

“In the U.S., Medicaid coverage is higher in rural areas than in urban areas, across the whole U.S.,” McBride said. “That does mean the geographic impact will probably be somewhat higher in rural areas versus urban.”&nbsp;

McBride pointed to the financial margins of hospitals, which he said are lower than what most people would expect. In rural communities, margins for hospitals are often zero or negative. If Medicaid dollars were to be reduced, that could put rural hospitals in an even more difficult place, he said.&nbsp;

And for rural grocery stores that participate in SNAP, a reduction in SNAP recipients or spending could paint a bleak picture.&nbsp;

“A lot of grocery stores have really, really high purchasing minimums to even keep going and get a distributor willing to drive their truck to their area to deliver the food,” Siebert said.&nbsp;

“There are so many people who have SNAP benefits in these communities, and if the local grocery store cannot accept those, they may go to other communities where they can use their SNAP dollars,” she said. “And then, they’re going to use their other money there, too, and it takes all of that money out of the community.”&nbsp;

It’s still unclear what components of the House or Senate budget plans may move forward, making it difficult for recipients of the federal funds to plan.&nbsp;

“Depending on how these cuts are made, more people might become uninsured, more people might lose access to health care, more people might become hungry,” Ku said. “In general, if the state has a more sustained loss, and there’s unemployment, this is not going to help the state economies. This is going to hurt the state economies.”&nbsp;

Billions at stake in Kansas, Missouri if proposed Medicaid, SNAP cuts move forward

Saline County residents will have the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills and disaster response techniques through a free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course this April.

The CERT program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their community and trains them in basic disaster response skills, including fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Participants can take the course purely for educational purposes or choose to become a certified CERT volunteer supporting first responders during emergencies and community events.

To graduate and receive a certificate of completion, registrants must attend all sessions. However, Emergency Management staff are willing to work with individuals who may have a scheduling conflict.

Training sessions will be held at the following dates and times:

 </figure>Saline County Emergecy MangementSaline County residents will have the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills and disaster response techniques through a free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course this April.The CERT program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their community and trains them in basic disaster response skills, including fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Participants can take the course purely for educational purposes or choose to become a certified CERT volunteer supporting first responders during emergencies and community events.To graduate and receive a certificate of completion, registrants must attend all sessions. However, Emergency Management staff are willing to work with individuals who may have a scheduling conflict.Training sessions will be held at the following dates and times:Wednesday, April 16: 6:00–8:00 p.m.Saturday, April 19: 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.Wednesday, April 23: 6:00–8:00 p.m.Saturday, April 26: 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
