‘Fathers in Focus’ event to support Saline County dads on April 4

At least 23 Kansans have tested positive for measles. Health officials urge full vaccination against the disease.

An outbreak of measles in southwest Kansas continues to grow.&nbsp;<a href="https://kshealthdata.kdhe.ks.gov/t/KDHE/views/InfectiousDiseaseCaseDashboard/DiseaseCharts?%3Aembed=y&amp;%3AisGuestRedirectFromVizportal=y" target="_blank">State health data shows</a>&nbsp;23 people in six counties have tested positive for measles since the start of this year. Data released on Wednesday showed the number of cases and counties affected by the spread have doubled.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment first&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1483" target="_blank">reported a measles case in Stevens County March 13</a>, stating it was the first measles case in Kansas since 2018. But the state’s measles dashboard also shows two cases, one in January and one in February. A state health department spokesperson said those cases were “retrospectively identified” and part of the current outbreak. The eight other cases were recorded this month.

Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly said during a health conference in Wichita that state officials are closely monitoring the outbreak and are ensuring infected people are isolated. She also urged Kansans to get vaccinated.

“They are safe and effective,” Kelly said. “I have two kids. They were both vaccinated. They are alive and well.”

<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/measles/data-research/index.html" target="_blank">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention classify a measles outbreak</a>&nbsp;as three or more cases linked to each other. This makes Kansas one of the most recent states with a measles outbreak.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/measles-outbreak-2025" target="_blank">Texas has the largest outbreak</a>, with more than 300 cases of the measles. Health experts say the disease can lead to serious complications, hospitalization or death.

The CDC has confirmed one death amid the outbreak in Texas. In New Mexico, health officials are investigating the cause of death for a person who tested positive for measles.

The ongoing spread of the illness in Kansas comes as state lawmakers in Topeka are considering a bill that includes loosening vaccine requirements in child care regulations.

The bill is aimed at reducing specific fees and training requirements for early child care facilities. But a provision expands religious exemptions for vaccines that are required for child care programs. The Kansas House recently approved the bill with bipartisan support.

Kansas vaccine advocates argue the requirement changes could reduce vaccine rates amid a growing public health issue.

“The more unvaccinated children you have in a setting, the more likely it is that measles or whatever will go through the population,” said Rabbi Moti Rieber, executive director for Kansas Interfaith Action.

Measles, also known as rubeola, is a highly contagious infection caused by a virus. It spreads through the air.

Dr. Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection and prevention at the University of Kansas Health System, said the illness can linger in the air for up to two hours. He said he expects to see the number of cases in Kansas rise because of how easy measles spreads.

“With the decrease in overall vaccine rates, I think we have to expect there to be more cases,” he said, “Just because the less people vaccinated means more people that are susceptible to the disease.”

Hawkinson said measles can potentially cause severe health problems, like pneumonia. In rare cases, it can lead to brain damage and deafness. He said one in five people who contract measles are hospitalized and it can be deadly.

“This can be a very devastating disease,” Hawinkson said. “It is unfortunate because we know we have the best proactive safety measure, and that is the vaccine.”

State health officials say nine of the 10 Kansans who tested positive for measles were unvaccinated, and one was under vaccinated.

Hawkinson said measles symptoms typically start like a common cold. An infected person may have a fever, sore throat, runny nose and mild cough. About two to three days later, the person may develop white&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/measles/symptoms-causes/syc-20374857" target="_blank">spots in their mouth, known as Koplik spots</a>. About three to five days later, the person will develop&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/measles/signs-symptoms/photos.html" target="_blank">a red, splotchy rash</a>, which Hawksinson said usually starts on a person’s head and face and then spreads downward.

<a href="https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/measles-keeping-family-safe.html" target="_blank">Experts say if you suspect you or your child has measles</a>, it’s best for them to stay home away from other people. Hawkinson said it’s also important to call ahead before bringing someone with a possible infection to the doctor, emergency room or urgent care.

“It is really best to call ahead so that they can take those preparations into account, so that they can protect other people in those areas,” he said.

“We have a vaccine that has been used for five to six decades,” Hawkinson said. “It has a great history of safety. It has a great history of effectiveness at preventing disease and especially the complications of disease.”

Children need two doses of either vaccine to be fully protected against measles. The first dose should be administered when a child is between 12 and 15 months old and the second should be when a child is between four and six years old. However, the MMVR second dose can be administered as early as 3 months after the first dose.

Hawkinson said now is a good time to check you and your family’s vaccination status. He said unvaccinated children and adults or people who didn’t receive both doses of the vaccine should consider getting them now.

That bill includes a provision that adds moral and ethical opposition to the definition of religious exemptions for vaccines that children are required to get before attending child care programs.

Rieber said the change is reckless. He said most major religions approve of vaccines.

“In anti-vax sentiment, sometimes it’s called 'religious' but actually, it is more about people’s fears,” Rieber said. “There’s not really a religious basis for it.”

Rieber said changing the definition of religious exemption for vaccine requirements at childcare facilities could also open the door to changes for K-12 public schools, which require several other vaccines for children.

Rieber said he supports expanding access to affordable child care in Kansas, but the amendment could harm vaccinated and unvaccinated kids.

“The biggest issue is the potential for this to be a precedent that would then take away the ability of the school or the facility to actually protect their children by not allowing unvaccinated children to be in the setting,” he said.

Lawmakers on the House floor did not discuss the details of the bill or the reasons to include the vaccine exemption changes before voting to approve it. The bill is now in the Senate.

Kansas lawmakers want to loosen vaccine requirements amid measles outbreak in the state

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in February. This is unchanged from 3.8% in January and an increase from 3.2% in February 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 67.2% in February, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Saline County is up slightly from 3.4 percent in January to 3.6 percent in February.&nbsp; The rate is also up from 3.7 to 3.9 percent in Dickinson County.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,100 from January. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 500 over the month, while government increased by 1,600. The largest job gains in the private sector were in construction (+700 jobs) and professional and business services (+500 jobs). The largest decrease was in trade, transportation and utilities (-800 jobs).

Since February 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 3,800. This change is due to a decrease of 100 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,900 government jobs.

Jobless rate up slightly in Saline County

Salina firefighters responded to a residential structure fire at 1512 Winona in the West Cloud Commons Mobile Home Park on Sunday night.

According to the Salina Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 9:45 p.m. and arrived to find the front half of the mobile home fully engulfed in flames. All occupants had safely exited the residence before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire and conducted search operations to ensure there were no remaining occupants. Neighboring mobile homes sustained damage due to the intensity of the fire, and two occupants from one of the neighboring homes were evaluated on scene by Salina Fire Department paramedics but declined further treatment or transport.

No injuries were reported among residents or fire department personnel. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, though the exact cause remains undetermined. The home is considered a total loss.

According to eye witnesses in the neighborhood, SFD crews arrived at the scene at approximately 9:45 p.m. Firefighters worked quickly to contain and extinguish the visible flames.&nbsp;

Details about the cause of the fire, number of structures involved and whether there were any injuries remain unknown at this time.

Westwood Road was temporarily closed to traffic while emergency crews worked at the scene. Residents in the area are advised to remain cautious and allow space for emergency personnel.

The Salina City Commission on Monday approved the final plat for Dry Creek Addition No. 2, advancing Phase II of the Magnolia Village housing project. The development, led by Salina Destination Development, LLC, covers 29.22 acres west of Virginia Drive and south of West Magnolia Road.

Phase II of the Magnolia Village project is planned to include 250 horizontal apartment units and three multi-level apartment buildings. The units will be distributed across three lots, with one lot designated for commercial development. The first phase of the project, which includes 254 apartment units and a clubhouse with a pool, is currently under construction.

"We expect to break ground as early as this spring on Phase II, working in conjunction with ongoing Phase I construction," said Dustin Marsh, a representative of Salina Destination Development.

The project will include the extension of Virginia Drive southward to replace the existing cul-de-sac and the addition of a new east-west connector street named Shenandoah Drive. An internal looped private access drive, named Avery Lane, will connect Magnolia Road and Virginia Drive.

Magnolia Road will undergo upgrades to meet Complete Street standards, including curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and a hike-and-bike path. These improvements are intended to accommodate increased traffic flow and improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.

"This project is essential to meeting Salina's growing housing needs while ensuring modern infrastructure and utility improvements," said Dean Andrew, City of Salina code administrator.&nbsp;

The development will include underground utilities, with a looped 12-inch public water line for fire protection and public access, as well as an 8-inch to 12-inch sanitary sewer line. Stormwater will be managed through two detention areas, which will be maintained by Salina Destination Development under recorded maintenance agreements.

The area will be served by Salina Fire Department Station #3 and covered by the Salina Police Department. Students residing in the development will attend Schilling Elementary School, South Middle School, and Salina South High School, with bus service available.

The Dry Creek Addition No. 2 project will be funded through a combination of special assessment financing, benefit district contributions, and state funding. Developers plan to use special assessment financing to cover the costs of extending Virginia Drive and constructing internal public water and sewer lines. Additionally, a benefit district will be created for the future construction of Shenandoah Drive. 

Funding for upgrading Magnolia Road comes from a combination of Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) grants and the City of Salina’s 2025 Capital Improvement Program.

The City Commission unanimously approved the plat and the associated infrastructure improvements.

Salina City Commission approves Dry Creek Addition No. 2 final plat

Kansas wheat growers know that success starts with strong, resilient varieties. Few understand this better than Dr. Guorong Zhang, a wheat breeder at Kansas State University's Agricultural Research Center in Hays. In a recent episode of the Wheat’s On Your Mind podcast, Zhang discussed his breeding philosophy, career path, and the future of wheat development in Kansas.

Zhang’s journey began on a small farm in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, where his family farmed rice and jute on less than an acre. After studying at Zhejiang Agriculture University, he spent time in barley research before coming to the U.S. for a Ph.D. in plant breeding at North Dakota State. That experience led him through research roles in soybean and biofuel crops, and eventually to K-State in 2012, where he took over the Hays breeding program.

“At the beginning, yield was my main focus,” Zhang said. “Farmers need high-yielding varieties to be profitable. Over time, I added more objectives—disease resistance, drought tolerance, and quality.”

His program has produced widely adopted varieties including Joe, KS Dallas, and KS Bill Snyder. Named in honor of the Hall of Fame football coach, the Snyder variety gained attention for its strong yield potential and broad adaptability. Zhang continues refining its drought tolerance as part of ongoing improvements.

Kansas weather has created some of Zhang’s toughest hurdles. In 2021, a hailstorm destroyed up to 80% of his trial plots in Hays, setting the program back significantly. These experiences have reinforced his focus on resilience in both environmental and disease-related stress.

“We’re getting better data, faster,” Zhang said, referencing the integration of double haploid breeding and drone phenotyping into his program. “The goal is to develop varieties that can handle both environmental stress and disease pressure.”

Field testing takes place across eight locations in western Kansas, including five farmer-managed sites. These trials give Zhang’s team insight into how lines perform under real-world growing conditions. He values the feedback received during field days and uses it to refine breeding goals for future releases.

“The western Kansas variety has strong resistance to Triticum mosaic virus and wheat streak mosaic virus, as well as improved drought tolerance,” Zhang said of two new releases expected this year. “The central Kansas variety has exceptional yield potential and strong disease resistance.”

His breeding program also includes collaborative work with universities like Colorado State to tackle new threats like wheat stem sawfly. Together, they evaluate new lines and share research data to speed up resistance development for high-risk regions.

Even as technology and challenges evolve, Zhang stays grounded in the basics: better yield, better disease resistance, and better quality. “We want Kansas farmers to have access to the best possible wheat varieties,” he said.

The Salina Police Department is warning residents about online rental scams after a local woman lost $700 while attempting to secure an apartment through Facebook.

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, the victim, a 47-year-old Salina, had contacted a person claiming to represent “Wendy Sherman Realty.” The suspect sent her a rental contract and instructed her to make three payments through Zelle, totaling $525.

After completing the initial payments, the suspect requested an additional $175 using an Apple gift card. When the woman attempted to meet the suspect to receive the keys to the apartment, the suspect refused and would not refund her money. The victim later discovered that the actual listing for the property was under a different realty company.

The total loss from the scam amounted to $700.

The Salina Police Department is reminding the public to exercise caution when attempting to rent properties online. Authorities advise never to make payments without first visiting the property and conducting a walkthrough. Legitimate realty companies and landlords should always allow potential renters to inspect the space before accepting deposits.

Additionally, police warn that any request for gift card payments should raise suspicion, as this is a common red flag in fraudulent transactions.

Anyone who has become a victim to a similar scam or has information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department.

The Mid-America Farm Expo, held annually, is celebrating its 60th anniversary and is considered to be one of the best places for anyone involved in the farming and agricultural sectors to get connected with dealers showcasing equipment.&nbsp; This year’s Expo will offer a wide range of exhibitors, including the latest agricultural technologies, equipment, machinery, and services, designed to help the farming community improve efficiency and sustainability.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the latest products and services transforming the agricultural landscape, attend informative sessions featuring thought leaders and industry experts, network with fellow professionals, suppliers, and farmers, and participate in live demonstrations of advanced farming equipment and technologies.

“I think there’s a misconception that agriculture is a dying industry, when of course, here in the Midwest, we know that couldn’t be any further from the truth,” Renee Duxler, President and CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, said. “The Farm Expo continues to evolve as the industry evolves with advanced technology, innovative methods, and emerging research. The Farm Expo is a great place for farmers and industry leaders to capture that knowledge.”

Special features of the Expo, in addition to the farm equipment displays, will include a variety of programs and seminars. Wednesday morning’s session will be Kansas Forage &amp; Grassland Council Talks with a panel of experts from across the region and will be held on the second floor of Tony’s Pizza Events Center. Wednesday afternoon will host a Central Kansas Irrigation Panel in the 4-H Building with a panel consisting of Dr. Johnathan Aguilar, KSU Extension Irrigation Specialist; Mark Billinger, KDA Assistant Water Commissioner; and Ryan Flickner, KFB Senior Director of Public Policy &amp; Central Kansas Farmer.

On Thursday, Washburn University’s Professor of Agricultural Law and Taxation, Roger McEowen, will discuss Hot Topics in Agricultural Law at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of Tony’s Pizza Events Center. In addition to the morning session, McEowen will be discussing farm succession planning at 1:30 p.m. in the 4-H Building.

To conclude the 60th Annual Mid America Farm Expo, there will be a Women in Agriculture session on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center on the second floor.

The Expo began 60 years ago as a project of the Agriculture Committee of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. It was named the Salina Materials Handling Show and had 44 exhibits on display at the Saline County Fairgrounds, now called the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center. With the construction of the Tony’s Pizza Events Center directly across from the Expo Center, the Farm Expo expanded and is now one of the largest spring farm shows in the Midwest, attracting a few thousand attendees over the three days.

The Expo is headquartered in the Tony’s Pizza Events Center, with additional displays in the Saline County Livestock &amp; Expo Center's Agricultural Hall. Exhibits are also located outside in front of Ag Hall and in the Events Center's west parking lot.

It’s that time again. Each spring Central Kansas gardeners and homeowners notice the small purple flowering weed called henbit which is just beginning to flower now.&nbsp; This common lawn and garden weed often gets people wondering what to do.&nbsp; Is it necessary to use a herbicide to control it or is there more to consider?&nbsp; Learning more about henbit may help.

Henbit is a plant in the mint family, which means like other mints, it has a square stem.&nbsp; This is one of the identification features.&nbsp; The flower is small, pink to purple, lipped, and tubular.

Henbit is classified as a winter annual, which means much of it actually germinated last fall and has been hanging out at about ground level all winter just waiting for spring to arrive.&nbsp; If you go out and look, you can find it at ground level beneath lawn grasses or even on bare soil in gardens in late fall and winter.&nbsp; If you find it on a protected south side of a home it will have already grown large and flowered by now.&nbsp; Flowering will often begin in March and flowers are most abundant during the month of April. The plant will grow four to six inches tall as it matures.&nbsp; Once temperatures warm up in June, the plant will have finished its annual life cycle, produced seed, and died off.

Although henbit is certainly an unwanted invader in many yards and gardens, it does have some benefits that should be considered before deciding to eradicate it completely.

Henbit is such an early bloomer that it is actually an important early spring food source for many pollinators.&nbsp; The small purple flowers of henbit provide both a pollen and nectar source for long tongued bees such as honeybees and bumble bees during the flowering period in March and April.

With this in mind, learning to tolerate henbit can certainly be a help to our local pollinators and is encouraged. Henbit is also quite attractive when a ‘stand’ is in full bloom.

If getting rid of henbit is a must for your situation remember that it should be controlled earlier rather than later.&nbsp; The optimum time to control it in a lawn is in the early fall with a pre-emergent to prevent it from successfully germinating.&nbsp; In Central Kansas, a pre-emergent should be applied in late August or early September (assuming no lawn overseeding is planned) to help stop many winter annual weeds including henbit.&nbsp;&nbsp; Barricade (prodiamine) is a common pre-emergent labeled for henbit that is often used since it has a long soil residual. Other preemergent products labeled for henbit include Dimension (dithiopyr) Gallery (isoxaben), Halts (pendimethalin) and others.

Henbit can also be controlled later in the fall (late October through November) after it has germinated with many broadleaf weeds spray products (there are many labeled for henbit).&nbsp;&nbsp; Be sure to follow label direction on any herbicide that is applied. Remember that henbit can continue to sporadically germinate through late fall and even winter and so some later germinating plants may be missed by a herbicide application in October or November.

Spring applied broadleaf weed herbicides can also be effective if applied early enough to stop the flowering and seed production of the plant.&nbsp; Caution is always encouraged, be sure to only spray on a calm day to avoid any unwanted spray drift which can damage other nearby plants that may be breaking dormancy.

Healthy turf is the best weed control

It is important to remember that henbit is rarely a big problem in a healthy lawn that is managed well.&nbsp; Henbit is not very competitive in a dense lawn. A thick and healthy turf is ultimately the best long term weed control in any situation.

Submitted Salina Public Schools (SPS) has released a new school safety video. The seventh video is a part of a series focused on working with families to uphold school safety.

In the video, Superintendent Linn Exline explains the anonymous reporting app, STOPit, and the response procedure,&nbsp;Run, Hide, Fight. The video series was started in 2023, after results from a community survey indicated interest in learning specifics about school safety.&nbsp;

"We value the feedback from our community as it helps us improve and create the best possible environment for our students,” said Linn Exline, superintendent. “Thank you for entrusting us with your children's education and for supporting our shared commitment to their safety and success."

SMITH COUNTY—Authorities are investigating the cause of a fatal fire in Smith County.

Just after 5a.m. Tuesday, first responders were alerted to a fire at the Home on the Rang Lodging Motel on East Highway 36 in Smith Center, according to Sheriff Travis Conway.

First responders pulled a unresponsive person from the structure who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Smith County Sheriff'f office, investigators from the Kansas State Fire Marshal and a K9 from Sedgwick County Fire are working together to investigate.&nbsp; No foul play is suspected.&nbsp; Authorities have not released the name of the victim or a damage estimate.

MANHATTAN, Kan – As egg prices continue to increase in grocery stores, Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said it might be beneficial to consider replacing eggs in certain recipes.

Blakeslee said the type of egg substitute to choose depends on the end product and the function it needs to provide. She cited information from her extension colleagues at the University of Illinois, who published various substitutes for recipes that require binding, leavening, moisture and other alternatives.

Blakeslee recommends using two ounces of extra-firm tofu to replace one boiled egg. If a recipe utilizes eggs to hold ingredients together, Blakeslee suggests using one tablespoon of chia seeds or ground flax seeds mixed with three tablespoons of water to replace one egg.

Another option, she said, is one package plain gelatin and two tablespoons of warm water to replace one egg.

“For leavening in baking, use the chia or flax seed mixture plus a half teaspoon of baking powder for each egg,” Blakeslee said. “For moistness in baking, use a quarter cup applesauce, mashed banana, pureed avocado, pureed garbanzo beans, or silken tofu for each egg. Another option is two tablespoons mayonnaise for each egg.”

According to the American Egg Board, shell eggs in the original carton can be stored in the refrigerator cabinet for 4-5 weeks beyond the pack date.

“This will likely go past the ‘sell by’ date on the carton, but they will be safe to use after that date as long as they have been refrigerated. This can help reduce food waste,” Blakeslee said.

Blakeslee also suggested freezing eggs for later use.

“Think about cutting back daily egg use to every other day to change up your routine and add variety,” Blakeslee said.

K-State Research and Extension: What can replace eggs in the kitchen 

Salina residents are invited to the Smoky Hill Museum on April 3 to hear archaeologist Dr. Donald Blakeslee share his latest findings about the rediscovery of Etzanoa, a Native American city near Arkansas City. The presentation, which is free to attend, will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 211 W Iron Avenue. Those unable to attend in person can join via Zoom by registering at <a href="http://www.smokyhillmuseum.org">www.smokyhillmuseum.org</a>.

Dr. Blakeslee, a Wichita State University archaeologist and author, first made headlines in 2015 when he and his team uncovered the lost city of Etzanoa, once home to more than 20,000 people. Since then, his research has expanded far beyond the original discovery, challenging long-held beliefs and potentially rewriting the history of Kansas.

As a sought-after speaker, Dr. Blakeslee will briefly revisit how he located Etzanoa before diving into the new and exciting revelations his team has uncovered. Seating at the museum is limited and available on a first-come, first-seated basis.

The presentation, which is free to attend, will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 211 W Iron Avenue. Since then, his research has expanded far beyond the original discovery, challenging long-held beliefs and potentially rewriting the history of Kansas.As a sought-after speaker, Dr. Blakeslee will briefly revisit how he located Etzanoa before diving into the new and exciting revelations his team has uncovered. The 2025 Gamechangers and Champions was co-presented by NXTUS, a Wichita-based catalyst for the startup ecosystem.

A $20,000 grand prize was delivered to pitch competition winner, Andrew Marquez with VU Scholarships of Roeland Park and, selected by a vote of the more than 200 attendees, Matt Williams with Noonan brought home the “Fan’s Choice” award, which carried a $2,500 prize.“Most Kansans have no idea the breadth and quality of entrepreneurs who are building tomorrow’s great businesses right here in Kansas,”&nbsp;President and CEO of NXTUS Mary Beth Jarvis said. “We’re changing that, thanks to the support from the Kansas Department of Commerce, Barton School of Business at WSU and the dozens of other sponsors.
