ABILENE - Joni Cook, a dedicated volunteer with Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County, was honored with the Home Care and Hospice Hero Award by the Kansas Home Care and Hospice Association during its annual conference on Wednesday, September 17. 

This award recognizes individuals who are not employed in the field, but who make a profound impact on home care and hospice through their selfless dedication and support.

Since joining the hospice program in spring 2021, Cook has donated over 730 hours of her time – consistently going above and beyond in her role. She was nominated by the staff of Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County, for her unwavering commitment, compassion and extraordinary service.

Whether sitting with patients in their final hours, offering a calming presence to grieving families, or simply holding a hand in silence, Cook provides comfort in ways words often cannot. Her natural ability to connect with patients – with dignity, empathy and grace – has brought peace to many during life’s most vulnerable moments.

One story that captures the essence of Cook’s compassion involves a blind patient who had been moved between multiple long-term care facilities and suffered from severe anxiety. When Cook first began visiting, the patient was new to her current home and feeling unsettled. To help ease her anxiety, Cook began describing everything around them – painting vivid scenes of the environment. As they sat together and listened to the birds, Cook shared the beauty just outside the window. These visits soon became a source of joy and comfort for the patient, transforming her experience into something peaceful and meaningful.

In addition to her work with patients, Cook is a tireless advocate for hospice awareness in the community. She mentors new volunteers, supports bereavement and staff appreciation events and

serves on the Hospice Advisory Board as secretary. Her positivity uplifts the entire team, and her quiet leadership continues to inspire others.

“Hospice care requires a rare blend of emotional strength, compassion and resilience,” said Taylor Knauss, volunteer coordinator at Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County. “Joni embodies all of these qualities and more. She reminds us that true heroism doesn’t lie in grand gestures, but in consistent, heartfelt acts of kindness.”

Dedicated healthcare volunteer from Dickinson Co. receives statewide award 

MITCHELL COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before noon Thursday in Mitchell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Chrysler Town &amp; Country driven by Austin Cearyn&nbsp;Jablonski, 17, Lincoln, was&nbsp;eastbound on Kansas 14 just south of V Road.

The driver lost control of the van. It crossed the center line into the westbound lane. A westbound 2021 Kenworth semi driven by Trey Isaac&nbsp;Mosier, 29, Ellinwood, struck the van and entered the north ditch. Both vehicles caught on fire.&nbsp;

Jablonski was pronounced dead at the scene and transported Roberts Funeral Home. Mosier was not injured. The KHP did not report seat belt usage details.

Governor Laura Kelly announced that the state is taking steps to develop an application for the $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP).

The Rural Health Transformation Program is part of H.R. 1, which enacted significant funding and coverage cuts to the Medicaid program that will threaten the viability of rural hospitals across the state that were already at risk of closing. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are committed to ensuring that rural Kansans have access to high-quality, affordable health care near their homes,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;said.&nbsp;“As a state with one of the highest rates of struggling rural hospitals in the nation, this funding through the RHTP is essential. Though the funds will not make up for the federal cuts to the Medicaid program, these resources will allow the state to make fundamental changes to the rural health care system to protect rural Kansans’ access to health care near their homes.”

The RHTP is intended to infuse millions of dollars into states’ health care systems and to bolster rural communities by improving the access and quality of care available to Kansans. Of the $50 billion RHTP, $25 billion will be distributed evenly to states whose applications are approved, and the other half will be dispersed based on factors outlined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in the application released on September 15. 

Kansas must submit one application for this funding, which will be distributed over the next five years, by November 5. CMS will then announce the funding awards by December 31.

Governor Kelly is creating the Kansas Rural Health Innovation Alliance to convene a group of stakeholders who will oversee the development of the application, and the implementation of the initiatives to be outlined in Kansas’ plan. The state, in association with the University of Kansas Health System Care Collaborative, will present an educational webinar on Monday, September 29, at 9:00 am to further outline the application and stakeholder engagement process.

“I look forward to partnering with the Care Collaborative Team and our state interagency task force,”&nbsp;Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Janet Stanek said.&nbsp;“This collaboration will help to ensure a strategic approach to this five-year funding opportunity.”

“We look forward to working with the Alliance,”&nbsp;Kansas Department for Children and Families&nbsp;Secretary Laura Howard said.&nbsp;“Their ideas will ensure Kansas’ proposal meets the needs of rural Kansans and providers.”

The University of Kansas Health System Care Collaborative is a well-established network of rural health care providers focused on researching and implementing evidence-based methods to improve Kansans’ health outcomes. Their assistance will enable the state to submit a successful application that secures funding to sustain our rural health care delivery system.

Based on the cult classic film and the popular board game, CLUE is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist.

Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27 at 7:00 pm and Sunday September 28 at 2:30 pm, the&nbsp;Salina Central Mustangs Theatre Troupe 639 will present "Clue" (High School Edition).

There is no service fee for using the online system. Any credit processing or tickets fees are all absorbed by Central's theatre troupe.

Central High School's theatre dept. presents "Clue": Tickets available now

KWU Music will launch its 2025-26 concert season Friday night (September 26), as numerous ensembles participate in a collage concert in Sams Chapel.

The event gets underway at 7:00 pm and admission is free.

Six different ensembles — the Wesleyan Chorale, Philharmonic Choir, String Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble — will take to the stage, performing works that range from a rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” (Wesleyan Chorale), to Ivan Trevino’s “Watercolor Sun” (Jazz Ensemble) to Robert Smith’s “When Summer Takes Flight” (Wind Ensemble).

Friday night's concert is part of KWU’s Family Weekend, a three-day event offering opportunities for families to engage with their student’s KWU experience.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) requests comments on an amendment to the Federal Fiscal Year 2026-2029 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) document.&nbsp;

The STIP is a project specific publication that lists all KDOT administered projects, regardless of funding source, and includes projects for counties and cities as well as projects on the State Highway System.

KDOT seeking public comment on roadway projects until October

Kansas Corporation Commission&nbsp;

On Thursday morning, The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) approved a unanimous settlement agreement allowing Evergy to increase its rates by $128 million to recover investments made to replace aging equipment and increase the resiliency and reliability of the power grid.&nbsp; 

Evergy requested an increase of $196.4 million in its application filed in January. The settlement agreement was reached after extensive negotiations between KCC staff, the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board, Evergy, and many other intervenors representing industrial and commercial customers as well as school districts.

The new rates will take effect beginning with the October billing cycle. Residential customers with average monthly usage (900 kWh), will see an increase of approximately $8.47 per month. 

Based on an independent review of evidence in the record, the Commission found that the agreed upon rates will provide Evergy with sufficient revenues to meet its financial obligations yet will keep rates as low as possible while maintaining reliable service for its customers.

Commissioner Dwight D. Keen filed a partial dissenting opinion on Thursday's order. 

He objects to the Commission’s decision to grant a 9.7% Return on Equity (ROE) for transmission delivery charges (TDC), which covers costs associated with building and maintaining the transmission system. TDC charges are not included in base rates but are passed through to ratepayers as a separate surcharge on their monthly bill. Keen states the approved ROE is excessive and may present ongoing affordability issues for ratepayers.

After unveiling the Kansas Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Roadmap on September 18 in Wichita, the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation, Kansas Department of Commerce and other aviation industry stakeholders are ready to create new ways to enhance mobility, drive economic growth, expand access to multimodal transportation and more across the state.

The roadmap outlines a statewide strategy to leverage emerging aviation technology to address transportation challenges and enhance multimodal connectivity.

Expanding aviation opportunities is not just a benefit for airports. “Hospitals can benefit from receiving medical deliveries, transporting staff and increasing air ambulance access, especially to rural communities,” said KDOT Director of Aviation Ray Seif. “Precision agriculture, infrastructure inspection and public safety are just some of the other ways that can benefit Kansans.”

With 146 public airports, a large aviation workforce and three universities leading the nation in aviation research as well as manufacturing, maintenance and parts suppliers, Kansas is poised to be an emerging technology powerhouse.&nbsp;

“There’s going to be a big push to improve aviation technology, which is vital for national security,” Seif said. “Being a leader at this stage is important for the country and also can immensely benefit the state’s economy from opportunities already rolling in.”

“Come to Kansas to test and stay here to build,” said Brian Kassin, Chief of Strategic Plans and Programs in KDOT’s Division of Aviation. “As soon as a firm gets a foothold in the state, they recognize Kansas has a unique value that others don’t, and they want to stay.”

The roadmap identifies lead stakeholders and actionable workstreams with near, mid-term, and long-term activities to help guide efforts statewide.

Government, academia and industry formed the Emerging Aviation Technology Working Group to develop the statewide AAM strategy to collaborate and be a collective voice for Kansas. Slew of events happening October in Abilene

The Salina Education Foundation held its annual Fall Breakfast on September 18 at the Salina Country Club. The event recognizes donor support for various grant and scholarship programs offered through the Salina Education Foundation. 

The New Dawn Singers from Salina South High School provided entertainment. Guests heard uplifting remarks from Superintendent Hogan and past recipients of the LIFT program (Loan Initiative for Future Teachers).

The LIFT program was established in 2006 to inspire promising students to pursue careers in education and return to teach in Salina Public Schools (SPS).&nbsp;26 current SPS teachers are LIFT alumni, with another 15 preparing to join the district in the coming years. 

The Salina Education Foundation is celebrating the 20th&nbsp;Anniversary of the LIFT program and recognizing the many teachers who have benefited from their participation in the LIFT program. The LIFT program continues to grow thanks to the continued commitment of donors to this vital initiative.

Three LIFT recipients—Kaysie Chrisman, Lauren Cox, and Cameron Munk—shared how being a part of the LIFT program influenced their professional journeys and solidified their dedication to teaching in Salina. 

In 2006, Kaysie Chrisman became SEF’s first LIFT recipient. A Salina native and SPS graduate, she has spent the past 18 years teaching at South Middle School. The LIFT scholarship enabled her to complete her education and begin her teaching career in her hometown. Since then, she has positively impacted more than 1,800 students — a powerful testament to the long-term impact of SEF’s support.

Lauren Cox also grew up in Salina. She received the LIFT scholarship as a high school senior and, after earning her degree from Kansas State University, returned to teach in Salina. She is currently the Math Coach at Oakdale Elementary School. Cox shared how SEF funding helped her purchase analog wristwatches for each of her third-grade students, supporting them in meeting state standards for telling time. She emphasized that SEF’s generosity plants the seeds whose roots run deeper than we may ever realize, creating an immeasurable impact.

Cameron Munk, a kindergarten teacher at Schilling Elementary, has been with SPS for five years. Inspired by her mother’s teaching career, Munk knew early on that education was her calling. The LIFT program helped turn that dream into reality. She has used SEF grants in her classroom in innovative ways — from organizing color-themed spirit weeks to reinforce color recognition, to providing doodle boards that build fine motor skills, and purchasing social-emotional books to support her students’ transition into school for first-time students.

Salina Education Foundation’s Executive Director, Kate Lindsay, thanked the donors and business sponsors. The three featured speakers showcased the success of the LIFT program for future teachers. These opportunities and experiences are made possible only because of the kind generosity of Salina Education Foundation donors.&nbsp;

The annual breakfast honors donors to the foundation and shares the work their donations make possible. The Salina Education Foundation’s grants and scholarships are funded through the generosity of donors from the community, including USD 305 teachers &amp; staff, Business Partners, Charitable Foundations, and individuals committed to providing enhanced educational experiences for students.

Salina Education Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of trustees. Established in 1987, it endeavors to promote and support educational excellence by providing resources to enhance opportunities for the students and staff of Salina Public Schools.

The LIFT program continues to grow thanks to the continued commitment of donors to this vital initiative.Three LIFT recipients—Kaysie Chrisman, Lauren Cox, and Cameron Munk—shared how being a part of the LIFT program influenced their professional journeys and solidified their dedication to teaching in Salina. In 2006, Kaysie Chrisman became SEF’s first LIFT recipient. A Salina native and SPS graduate, she has spent the past 18 years teaching at South Middle School. The LIFT scholarship enabled her to complete her education and begin her teaching career in her hometown. Since then, she has positively impacted more than 1,800 students — a powerful testament to the long-term impact of SEF’s support.Lauren Cox also grew up in Salina. She received the LIFT scholarship as a high school senior and, after earning her degree from Kansas State University, returned to teach in Salina. She is currently the Math Coach at Oakdale Elementary School. Cox shared how SEF funding helped her purchase analog wristwatches for each of her third-grade students, supporting them in meeting state standards for telling time. She emphasized that SEF’s generosity plants the seeds whose roots run deeper than we may ever realize, creating an immeasurable impact.Cameron Munk, a kindergarten teacher at Schilling Elementary, has been with SPS for five years. Inspired by her mother’s teaching career, Munk knew early on that education was her calling. The LIFT program helped turn that dream into reality. Kratom and 7-OH are often marketed alongside each other because 7-OH is naturally found in <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-and-kratom#:~:text=Products%20prepared%20from%20kratom%20leaves,use%20disorder%2C%20and%20opioid%20withdrawal.">kratom</a>&nbsp;in small amounts. However, 7-OH products use synthetic compounds with much higher concentration and potency.

These products are sold in stores such as smoke shops, gas stations, convenience stores, and online shops. They can be gummies, liquid shots, tablets, or powders. It is sometimes sold as if it were the same product as kratom, but it is not. 7-OH is more addictive, and using it in combination with alcohol or other sedatives can cause severe respiratory depression, and in some cases, even death.

Because 7-OH is unregulated, the potency and quality of products can vary widely, making it difficult to safely gauge dosage. KDHE emphasizes that combining 7-OH with other substances increases the risk of overdose.

“We are urging individuals to avoid using any products containing 7-OH,”&nbsp;Dr. Dereck Totten, KDHE Chief Medical Officer, said. “It can be extremely harmful, even in small doses. Always consult with your healthcare provider before consuming any new supplements, and if you suspect an adverse reaction or overdose, seek medical attention immediately.”

The FDA has received reports of harmful effects associated with 7-OH products, which include addiction, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal distress, insomnia, seizures, and withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, body aches, fatigue, irritability, and cold sweats.

- Because 7-OH acts on opioid receptors, it can cause respiratory depression and overdose.

- Opioid overdose (including 7-OH) can be reversed with naloxone, a medication that restores normal breathing.

- It is important to recognize that naloxone prevents opioid overdose. However, if 7-OH is mixed with other drugs or alcohol, then naloxone may not fully reverse the effects.

- Naloxone can be administered through the nose or as an intramuscular injection to save a person’s life. Both methods are equally effective.

- Anyone who suspects an overdose should call 911 immediately and administer naloxone, if available.

- Read labels carefully when buying candies or supplements.. Talk to children and teens about the risks of 7-OH.

- Keep 7-OH products away from children and pets.

- Stay informed about overdose risks and keep naloxone available in case of an emergency.

- Consult a healthcare provider before using any supplements, especially anything marketed for pain, energy or mood.

KDHE warns about effects of 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) drug usage

Ever since he was 8 years of age, Shane McClintock has been listening to Salina-area's #1 station for new country, 99KG. His dream of operating 99KG, became a reality for him in 2013 and has been managing the station ever since.&nbsp;

However, Tuesday, September 30 will be the last day McClintock will be on the air waves for 99KG. At least for now.

Before becoming #1: The passion that drives

McClintock worked part-time for 99KG when he was a junior in high school. Every night at around 10 pm, he would walk into the radio station and just dream about becoming a part of 99KG.&nbsp;

His first full-time position as a radio operator was in Kansas City, where he worked there for 12 years, before fully programming 99KG in 2013. Ever since he took over 99KG, the station has been #1 and he has been the longest running Program Operator/Director in history.

Sure McClintock has the talent and work ethic (which the numbers speak for itself), but his heart for radio and most importantly people, is what drives his passion.&nbsp;

"It is not about how many artists that I can meet. When I put together a promotion, there is a deeper meaning behind all of it," said McClintock.

McClintock added, the reason he always puts so much passion into promotions, runs deeper than just giving away prizes.

 "By the time I was 17, I do not think I traveled past McPherson. So when I create trips, tickets or experiences, I build them in a way for that kid I once was, who could not have afforded it. Now it's easy for that kid or family who is out there, to just win it."&nbsp;

On the air-waves, McClintock is known to always display a positive and enthusiastic attitude, whether it be a promotion or live with a listener. He explained how he wants to express his integrity with each person he meets, both on-air and in-person.

"It is not a different persona, it does not matter how much money someone makes, whether I meet you and you make alot of money or not," he said. "I want someone to leave a conversation with me, knowing I was pretty straightforward and honest with them. I do not want to try to be someone I am not."

McClintock has talked about the story of both his parents passing away&nbsp; with listeners on the air. He has met listeners that have experienced the same events and shared true, raw emotions with them over the air.&nbsp;

"It is kind of nice to know that someone is going through the same thing and you can share those emotions with each other," he said.

Additionally, McClintock is known to be a part of putting together events for the youth in the community. Events such as, "Dad for Day," "Toyathon" and various other giveaways. The experiences and reactions the youth expresses is what matters most to him.

"That matters more than pretty much anything. They do not know who we are, and it is not about what they say to me, but about what I get to see," he said. "Radio can be about you, but it is not all about you and the only thing that matters is what comes out of the speaker, to the listener."

As far as what is next for McClintock, there is not a clear answer. Though his love for radio will never fade, he is unsure if he will continue to do it elsewhere.

However, he vows to continue in focusing on his family, especially his two boys.

"What's next? I have no idea," he said. "I have some ideas, but I want more than anything to have consistency for my kids."

"My overall time truly at 99KG, has been some of best 12 years of my life," McClintock said.

McClintock hopes one day to have a conversation with Head Coach of the Detroit Lions, Dan Campbell.
