KHP releases 2026 Memorial Day Weekend travel data, decrease of fatalities from last year

The Kansas Highway Patrol has released its Memorial Day Weekend Holiday Activity Report.

This reporting period ran from 6:00 p.m. Friday, May 22, through 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2026.

KHP worked 2 fatal non-DUI related crashes, resulting in 2 non-DUI related fatalities during the holiday reporting period.

This is was a decrease in fatalities from last year. In 2025, there were 4 non-DUI fatal crashes, resulting in 7 non-DUI related fatalities. In 2024, there was 1 non-DUI fatal crash, resulting in 3 non-DUI related fatalities.

Moreover, the KHP had 472 motorist assists in 2026. This was a decrease from last year, which had 590.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), this year nearly 45 million Americans traveled at least 50 miles from home for Memorial Day weekend, the highest total on record.

More than 503,000 Kansans traveled, up 0.4% from 2025.
