A man removed from Evergy property in Salina for trespassing was later arrested again after allegedly breaking windows at a convenience store, according to Salina Police Capt. James Feldman.

SPD officers were called to 1001 Edison Place around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Evergy employees reported that a man had been camping on the property and refused to leave.

Officers offered the 51-year-old man, later identified as Jason William Meyer, several shelter options due to the cold weather, but he declined assistance. When he refused to leave the property, officers arrested him for trespassing and booked him into Saline County Jail.

By early Thursday morning, Meyer was out of jail and at 848 N. Broadway, where he called 911 around 5:20 a.m. Officers arrived to find him yelling that he was going to do something to get arrested.

Again, officers offered Meyer various shelter options, but he refused assistance and did not commit any crimes at that time.

Minutes later, at 5:40 a.m., Meyer called police again, reporting that he had broken windows at the Valero Convenience Store at 848 N. Broadway.

When officers arrived, Meyer admitted to damaging the store’s front doors, valued at approximately $3,000. He was arrested for felony damage to property and booked back into Saline County Jail.

Thompson is the third of four finalists selected for interviews. The board chose finalists based on their alignment with desired characteristics identified through input from focus groups and a community survey.

With 29 years of experience in education, Thompson currently serves as the superintendent of schools in Norfolk, Nebraska. She previously worked in Beatrice Public Schools, Nebraska, as the director of student programs, a special education and staff development coordinator, and a special education teacher.

Her schedule for Feb. 13 includes meetings with district personnel, a tour of the community, and a public reception at 3:45 p.m. at 1511 Gypsum Ave. The formal interview will take place in executive session at 6:15 p.m. at Homewood Suites, 115 E. Mulberry St. No official action will be taken.

Thompson to interview for superintendent position on Feb. 13

TOPEKA — Olathe East High School senior Grace Springer told lawmakers her life “changed forever” when a classmate brought a gun to school&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/03/04/u-s-senator-state-political-leaders-torn-by-school-shooting-at-olathe-high-school/">in 2022</a>, opened fire and injured an administrator and school resource officer.

The next day, she said, “I was terrified to go anywhere.”

“I worried that another shooting could happen to me at any time,” Springer said. “Grocery stores or movie theaters — nowhere I went felt safe.”

“No one deserves to live in a place where gun violence is a constant fear,” she added.

Members of the House Federal and State Affairs Committee are considering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/hcr5006/" target="_blank">House Concurrent Resolution 5006,</a>&nbsp;which would present to voters a constitutional amendment that recognizes the God-given right to own a firearm, ammunition and accessories.

The proposal would apply a “strict scrutiny” to the right, invoking a legal term with the goal of blocking any future restrictions on gun rights. That means even armor-piercing bullets could be protected, according to testimony from proponents.

Springer, who said the constitutional amendment would put guns in the hands of felons and abusers, was one of two opponents to speak at a Feb. 5 hearing on the resolution, although opponents who submitted testimony outnumber proponents 32-13. The other opponent who spoke, Nick Reinecker, said the resolution doesn’t provide enough freedom for gun owners.

The resolution has the support of 67 sponsors in the House, as well as Attorney General Kris Kobach.

The proposed constitutional amendment refers to “a natural and fundamental right” to carry guns, which Kobach defined for committee members as “a God-given right, or if one doesn’t believe in God, then a right that is of the very essence of human logic and human nature.”

“It’s a right that government doesn’t create,” Kobach said.

Megan Hilbish, executive director of the Kansas State Rifle Association, said it was necessary to clarify the right to possess ammunition and accessories to ensure that guns could be used for safety and sport. She identified herself as a certified firearms instructor and competitive shooter.

“A firearm is a tool that is not just used for self defense,” she said. “It is a tool that can do a lot of really neat, impressive things, including the sports side of shooting.”

Rep. Dan Osman, an Overland Park Democrat, presented a challenge to supporters: Could any of them identify a law passed by the Legislature that infringes on the right to bear arms? No one offered an example.

“I am not aware of any that have infringed on our rights,” said Tammy Bartels, a Lawrence resident and director of the Kansas chapter of Women for Gun Rights. “But that does not mean that that will not happen in the future.”

Richard Condon, a U.S. citizen with a distinct Scottish accent, talked of his service in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces in the 1990s in Yugoslavia, as a private security contractor in Afghanistan, and as a law enforcement officer in Johnson County.

“No, I’m not James Bond,” he said, although no one indicated they thought he was. “What I am is a guardian.”

Condon asserted without offering evidence that he knows “for a fact” that members of a violent Venezuelan gang are present in Kansas.

“These gang members are known for their vicious and brutal tactics, giving no consideration to our laws or our law enforcement officers,” Condon said. “Swift and decisive legal action against criminal fire on possession should be your priority.”

Kansas House looks to enshrine ‘God-given right’ to guns, ammo in state constitution

Our Kansas representatives, given their oath to protect the Constitution, should erect a barrier wall against this destruction of the Republic.&nbsp;&nbsp;But these Republicans haven’t.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you are not yet ‘woke,’ it is long past time.

Resistance is imperative.&nbsp;&nbsp;Your life just got unimaginably harder than need be.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is getting far worse, daily.&nbsp;&nbsp;No single writing, podcast, or news report can presently capture all attacks on the body politic.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

[Recently], she called Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith and other prosecutors [charging]Trump “horrible” people, trying to make names for themselves by “going after Donald Trump and weaponizing our legal system.”

As illustration, I’ll close with the post-election, widely-published column from Tracey Mann, our illustrious 1st-District Congressman.&nbsp;&nbsp;His role as inheritor of the Marshall/Huelskamp reign of fools (Example: their claims that Barack Obama was not a citizen), was starkly evident throughout.&nbsp;&nbsp;

They undermine the hundreds of prosecutors and FBI agents who, regardless of party or politics, worked tirelessly on these cases, as well as bipartisan federal judges who sentenced them….“[Now] individuals who (not without encouragement) used violence to achieve their ends are back out into our communities, who will [live in fear of] the consequences. The pardons encourage others to use similar means of political protest, without fear of long-term accountability.“[Even more insidious]: the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/ed-martin-advocate-jan-6-defendants-interim-chief-us-attorney-dc-rcna188446">appointment of Ed Martin</a>, a prominent backer of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists, as interim U.S. attorney in Washington, DC.&nbsp;&nbsp;What does that tell you?Here’s what it tells us: People loyal to Trump cannot be reached by career federal prosecutors and agents; it is the ultimate politicization of the justice system and Department of Justice.”&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://contrarian.substack.com/p/undermining-doj?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email">Remember the Retrumplican rhetoric about the DOJ being ‘weaponized’?&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;It wasn’t before.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is now.&nbsp;Secondly, there are the hopelessly incompetent Trump-loyalist cabinet nominees.&nbsp;This pardon/appointment dirty work bulldozed a path for Attorney General nominees, to head an invaded Department of (In)justice.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sexual predator Matt Gaetz has withdrawn.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now comes Pam Bondi.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Bondi, a well-known figure in Trump’s circle, chaired the America First Policy Institute, a think tank set up by former Trump administration staffers. She’s been a vocal critic of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/projects/trump-investigations-civil-criminal-tracker/">criminal cases against Trump</a>. OPINION: Stop the chaos?  Where's it coming from?

GEARY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6a.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Lexus ES driven by Lisa M.&nbsp;Good, 46, Salina, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near just east of the U.S. 77 exit.

 The driver lost control of the car due to a truck passing her and causing the car to move further to the right. The Lexus then traveled into the south ditch, went into a spin and struck a delineator post.

EMS transported Good to Stormont Vail. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, Courtney Downs of Manhattan failed to yield the right of way at the traffic light at the corner of Southwind Road and S. Seth Child Road in Manhattan.

Down's vehicle struck a vehicle driven by Dauane Briggs of Salina. EMS transported Downs and a passenger from Briggs' vehicle to Via Christi&nbsp; for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. The Riley County Police Department released no additional details.

Coup is the second of four finalists selected for interviews based on their alignment with desired characteristics identified by the board, with input from focus groups and a community survey.

As a reminder, Saline County’s&nbsp;snow removal efforts prioritize paved roads first, followed by gravel roads, and finally all other roads. Plowing begins once&nbsp;two inches of snow have accumulated and snowfall is ongoing. If conditions are icy, crews will spot-treat&nbsp;icy sections on paved roads only.&nbsp;During&nbsp;blizzard conditions or heavy snowfall, operations may pause temporarily until it’s safe for crews to resume.

Saline County snowplows are on the move- track their progress here

By SALINA POST The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has arrested Manuel Johnson-Ponce, 29, of Salina, related to his role in a Feb. 4 standoff and officer-involved shooting in Salina.

KBI agents arrested Johnson-Ponce following his release from Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; Agents then transported Johnson-Ponce to the Saline County Jail where he was booked on a warrant for three counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal threat, aggravated endangering a child, domestic battery, criminal restraint, and criminal trespass.

At around 11:20 a.m. Feb. 4, SPD received a call from a woman who reported an armed domestic disturbance at her home, in the 900 block of Birch Drive in Salina.

Preliminary information indicates that when officers arrived, they contacted a female subject outside the house and learned that a male subject, later identified as Manuel Johnson-Ponce, 29, of Salina, had barricaded inside the home with a three-year old child. He was making threats to the child and officers.

Around 12 p.m., SPD’s SWAT team also responded to the scene. KBI’s High Risk Warrant Team (HRWT) was requested to assist around 12:15 p.m.

During the standoff, Johnson-Ponce refused to comply with repeated commands to come out of the house. He would also not allow the toddler to leave. Around 1 p.m. an officer from SPD fired rounds striking Johnson-Ponce. Immediately following the shooting, law enforcement officers safely rescued the child from the home.

Officers rendered aid to Johnson-Ponce. EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital. Johnson-Ponce was treated for non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.

KBI: Suspect in Salina officer shooting moved from hospital to jail

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are investigating a burglary at Virg’s Auto Repair that resulted in vehicle damage, theft, and thousands of dollars in property damage early Monday morning.

According to SPD Captain James Feldman, officers responded to Virg’s Auto Repair, 501 E. Pacific, around 5:45 a.m. on February 10 after employees reported a break-in. A back window had been shattered to gain entry to the business.

During the investigation, employees discovered damage to two vehicles on the lot. A white Lexus ES300 had its front bumper partially ripped off and a shattered headlight, while a silver Chevy Avalanche sustained a dent on the front driver’s side wheel well. An airsoft pistol was reported stolen from the office.

A 2020 gray Dodge Durango Pursuit, valued at $16,000, was also stolen from the property. The Durango, owned by a 36-year-old Salina man, was driven through a fence into a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) property at 1006 N. 3rd Street and then through a KDOT-owned gate. The damage was estimated at $5,000.

The stolen vehicle was last seen in the McPherson area shortly before being reported missing. SPD officers recovered the stolen airsoft pistol near the spot where the Durango had been taken. A possible suspect has been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, SPD officers responded to a stolen vehicle report at around 10 p.m. on February 10 at the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth Street. A 22-year-old man from McPherson told police he had parked his white 2018 Dodge Charger, valued at $14,000, outside the movie theater around 7:50 p.m. and left his keys inside the vehicle before heading inside to watch a movie. When he returned, the car was gone.

Officers used the FLOCK camera system to track the vehicle’s location near Ninth Street and Schilling Road. They found the Charger in a parking lot, and as they approached, a male suspect ran from the vehicle. Officers pursued and apprehended the 16-year-old behind Walmart.

The teen, a Salina resident, was arrested on suspicion of felony theft. Feldman reported no damage was reported to the vehicle.
