A water main break on Crawford and S. Ohio streets which occurred earlier in Salina on Monday, has backed up traffic to one lane and alternative routes are highly encouraged.&nbsp;

According to a City of Salina Water Department Official, a 6-inch water main break that occurred on Crawford and S. Ohio streets by Subway and the old Original Grande has backed up to one lane going eastbound from Lewis to S. Ohio streets.&nbsp;

Traffic is currently being backed up past Roach St.

The Water Department strongly encourages residents to avoid the area and seek alternative routes. Repairs are currently being made to solve the issue. 

According to the Water Department, repairs may take the entire evening of Monday.

The Water Department also stated that all businesses on Crawford between Lewis and S. Ohio streets are without water.&nbsp;

When his daughter, Morgan, was born in 2018, Monte went into semi-retirement from his exotic career to help ensure a brighter future for his family, including reliable health insurance. Now 6 years old, Morgan “is the light of his life and the reason he lives,” explained Molly, Monte’s sister.

Monte experienced undiagnosed symptoms for several years, but in August 2024, he was rushed to the hospital, swollen and jaundiced. He was diagnosed with liver failure. After multiple medical procedures, Monte must now remain hospitalized until he can get a life-saving liver and kidney transplant.

Because Monte has been unable to work, he will lose his health insurance plan starting in June 2025. To help cover the extreme out-of-pocket costs of a transplant, his loved ones started a fundraising campaign with the trusted national nonprofit Help Hope Live on May 14.

The fundraising campaign raised over $6,300 in the first 2 weeks. Monte and his family were stunned. As of June 16, they have raised over $6,500.

“We received $1,000 in donations over the first hour,” shared Molly. “It was enough to help cover a giant medical expense. I couldn’t help but cry.”

Former camel trainer stunned by $6,500+ donated to help with transplant

A Motorcyclist was sent to the hospital when a driver's view was 'blocked,' before a motorcycle-vehicle accident occurred in Salina.

According to the Salina Police Department a motorcycle-vehicle accident occurred on Sunday, June 15th on 9th and Belmont streets in Salina. It was reported that on Sunday afternoon, a 2014 Harley Davidson was going southbound on 9th and a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer was heading northbound on 9th.

Police stated that the Trailblazer was making a turn to go west on Belmont and struck the motorcycle afterwards. Police reported before the crash, a vehicle uninvolved in the accident was going southbound on 9th and was in the inner turning lane, as the Trailblazer was in the outer turning lane.

It is believed that the vehicle that was not involved in the crash, was 'blocking the view' of the Trailblazer when making the turn and striking the motorcyclist.

The driver of the motorcycle is a 62-year old male of Lincoln, KS and was sent to a hospital in Wichita, KS after suffering a broken wrist, ribs and possibly a pelvis.&nbsp;

The Salina Fire Department responded to the scene immediately, as they were nearby when the crash occurred.

The accident is currently under investigation.

Argument leads to a scuffle, a gun sounding off and an arrest at a Salina home.

According to the Salina Police Department on Friday, June 13th at around 9:30 pm, officers were sent to respond to the report of a shooting that occurred at a home on the 1000 block of E. Iron. It was reported that a 46-year old male arrived to a 57-year old male's home, who is identified as Patrick Syler.

Police stated that the 46-year old male went to Syler's home to "move some furniture." When the male arrived, Syler suspected him of stealing an RC (Radio Controlled) vehicle and an argument surfaced afterwards.

Allegedly, Syler pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the male. Subsequently, the male and Syler got into a scuffle and during the event, the gun sounded off. Police reported that a bullet went through the front of the house and a 71-year old male that was standing on the front porch of the home "received a small abrasion to his midsection."

Police did not confirm if the bullet of the gun struck the 71-year old male and he did not need any medical treatment.

A neighbor of the block reported to police about hearing a gunshot and when officers arrived to the scene, they came in contact with the 46-year old and Syler. After further investigation, officers arrested Syler without incident. Officers also located illegal drugs and a 9mm gun.

Syler was booked into the Saline County and is facing the following charges:

Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Possession of an Opiate, Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia.

Police were not able to determine why the 71-year old male was present at the home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, June 13th at around 9:30 pm, officers responded to a domestic disturbance that occurred on the 200 block of N. Oakdale. It was reported that a 29-year old female victim who lives at the residence, was with a 30-year old male identified as Adrian Del Real.

Allegedly, Del Real and the victim got into an argument on the driveway of the home. Del Real wanted to see the victim's phone and decided to push her. After she was pushed, Police stated the victim was "struck in the bridge of her nose, causing her to bleed."&nbsp;

Subsequently, the victim then went inside the home and went into a bathroom. Del Real then followed her as the argument continued, and it was reported that he "ripped off her apple watch and threw it into the toilet." The victim was able to leave the bathroom and get away from Del Real.&nbsp;

Police stated that Del Real called SPD and when officers arrived to the home, he was taken into custody without incident.

Del Real was booked into the Saline County Jail and is facing the following charges; Robbery, Criminal Deprivation of Property and Domestic Battery.

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 16

Two delegates from the 2025 session of the <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a> have been elected by their peers to represent Kansas Boys State as senators at <a href="https://www.legion.org/boysnation/">Boys Nation</a> this summer. The announcement was made this morning during an assembly at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Tristan Jenkins, a resident of Olathe, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Olathe South High School, and Garrett Li, a resident of Overland Park, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Olathe North High School will attend Boys Nation, Friday, July 18 through Saturday, July 26, at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. Earlier in the week Li was elected as the Kansas Boys State governor

Jared Tucker, a resident of Fall River, Kan., and a senior-to-be at West Elk High School in Howard, Kan., and Louis McVey, a resident of Otis, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Otis-Bison High School, were elected as the first alternate and second alternate, respectively.

At Boys Nation, Jenkins and Li will join representatives from each of the 49 Boys State programs across the country (Hawaii does not have a Boys State program) to receive an education on the structure and function of federal government. At the event, each delegate acts as a senator from his Boys State. The young lawmakers caucus at the beginning of the session, then organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills submitted by program delegates. Senators also learn the proper method of handling bills, according to U.S. Senate rules.

Participation in the political process is emphasized throughout the week, including organization of party conventions, and nominating and electing a president and vice president. The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet with elected officials from their home states.


High school students from across the State of Kansas are participating in the 2025 session of the <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a>, which started on June 1 and ends tomorrow (Saturday, June 7), at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This is the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU and 87th overall. The Kansas Boys State program includes students who have just completed their junior year of high school (will be seniors in the fall) and sophomore year of high school (will be juniors in the fall).

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

MINNEAPOLIS - The Kansas FFA student led organization for the first time, has recently elected a State President from Minneapolis, KS since its establishment in 1928.&nbsp;

Lillian Hulse, incoming freshman for Kansas State University made history after the 97th annual Kansas FFA State Convention on May 28th - May 30th, 2025 by becoming the first Kansas FFA State President for the 2025-2026 tenure from Minneapolis, KS. Hulse is the President of the 2025-2026 Kansas FFA State Officer team, which was announced at the Kansas FFA State Convention at the campus of K-State.

"Becoming President was very unexpected for me," but it is an honor to be in this position," said Hulse.&nbsp;

Hulse grew up on a farm with her family, where they raised commercial Hereford cattle. Since she was always around the agricultural lifestyle, Hulse found her love and interest for it. She then became involved with <a href="https://4-h.org/about/">4-H</a>&nbsp;when she was 6 years old.&nbsp;

Hulse first joined Kansas FFA in the Minneapolis chapter when she was a 7th grader. Kansas FFA was that next step for her as she&nbsp; followed her brother's footsteps, August Hulse who was in Kansas FFA. This is where she found her own interest in career development and leadership development events, that allowed her to find her own passions for agriculture.&nbsp;

“The leadership aspect, allows you to meet alot of people, learn alot about agriculture and learn from others," said Hulse. 

She then served as the chapter officer for Minneapolis, when she was a sophomore in high school and ran for district office. This is when Hulse realized that she really enjoyed meeting people and making an impact in the leadership role. Furthermore, Hulse then became the Minneapolis Chapter Vice President that same year and her junior year, she was elected as the President for the chapter of Minneapolis. She went on ahead and served in the Kansas FFA North Central Kansas District, which oversees 30 chapters. Hulse was the Treasurer for the district her junior year and was then elected as Vice President her senior of high school. 

Throughout her journey, she found her interest in Agricultural Communications, which is a setting where FFA students listen to an individual speak about an agricultural issue and then students will write an article regarding it.&nbsp;

"I realized that I really love Agricultural Communications and it allowed me to start my supervised agricultural experience," said Hulse.

Hulse has written articles for “Grass and Grain” (Kansas Agriculture Newspaper) and the "Minneapolis Messenger." She has wrote stories that touch on topics on why she thinks agricultural education should be taught in grade schools in some way of form.

Voting process of becoming the first Kansas FFA State President out of Minneapolis, KS

Before she started her role as Kansas FFA State President for the 2025-2026 year, she had to go through a lengthy process during State Convention. Hulse stated that the voting process took 3 days full of interviews, speeches and activities.&nbsp;

"I had a busy week, but in the end it helped me work on my own communication skills," said Hulse.

According to Hulse, the voting process consisted of 12 people on a nominating committee, past state officers, advisors and agricultural industry professionals that are part of a process that includes delegates and every chapter in the state of Kansas (240 chapters).

The candidates went through many interviews (both one on one and group), speeches about a specific topic and issues regarding the agricultural industry. The nominating committee also voted and evaluated on a specific activity that was performed by the candidate and their partner. Then delegates would evaluate each candidate during a meet and greet session, which went over their&nbsp;personable skills and traits. Candidates were also evaluated through a parliamentary procedure and their employability skills, which is a similar to a job interview.

After the process, Hulse was then elected as the Kansas FFA State President for the 2025-2026 State Officer team.

Hulse has been pretty busy since she has started her presidency role. She described her role as one who will lead&nbsp;all of the Board of Director meetings for Kansas FFA, participating in Chapter Leadership Trainings and District Officer Conferences.&nbsp;

According to Hulse, Chapter Leadership Trainings are&nbsp;meant to help other chapters (local) across the state create their own program of activities for the year. District Officer Conferences&nbsp;help district officers (7 of them) learn how to facilitate their own conferences that they will hold throughout the year. Hulse will also participate in industry visits and tours as well.

Hulse is committed to attending K-State University in Manhattan, where she will be majoring in Agricultural Education and Communications. After her college career, she plans on hoping to be an agriculture teacher, writer and a Kansas FFA advisor.

"I hope to advocate and inform people about issues regarding agriculture,” said Hulse. Hopefully more people can join FFA and grow from it themselves.”

"Now with this degree that I am pursuing in agricultural education, I hope to help people become more aware of agriculture and the importance of it especially for people at a young age," said Hulse.

Hulse will continue to write for Grass and Grain during her college career.&nbsp;

Thoughts on FFA and Hulse's support system

Hulse could not have accomplished this achievement by herself as she thanks her family and her Minneapolis FFA agriculture teacher and advisor, Christina Wallace. She thanked her father, Joshua Hulse, mother, Melissa Hulse and brother, August Hulse. Wallace helped her practice for about 3 months before state convention, where she was elected as Kansas FFA State President.

"No matter what she (Wallace) always went out her way to make sure I succeeded and she does this for everyone too,” said Hulse. “There is no way I would be state president if it was not for her. Her and my family&nbsp;have always been very supportive."

Wallace had nothing but great things to say about Hulse. Both had a common experience when it came to entering a new environment, as Wallace started her teaching career in Minneapolis when Hulse entered the Minneapolis chapter in the 7th grade, after she transferred from Bennington.

“We got to journey along and figure things out together," said Wallace.

Wallace stated when she first met Hulse as a student, that she was very 'quiet,' yet very 'diligent.' She described that Hulse never let her grades falter no matter how busy she may have gotten with extracurricular activities and FFA.&nbsp;

As Hulse started to acclimate to the Minneapolis environment, Wallace said this is when she 'came out her shell.'

“The more I got to spend time with Lillian, the more I got to know her and we were comfortable around each other,” said Wallace. “Once you are comfortable around the people you know, then it flows over to every aspect of your life.”

Wallace commented that many teachers have said they wish more students were like Hulse. She also described that Hulse was 'very competitive' and that she wanted to compete in every contest and opportunity that was available to her.

“She (Hulse) was almost always top ten in just about everything she competed in,” said Wallace. "Literally I can count on one hand, the contests that she did not place top ten in the contests she had gone to for 4 years.”

The friendship that Hulse and Wallace have is one that is strong and keeps each other uplifted. Wallace talked about how she 'pushed her to try new things' that Hulse did not always think were her best fit. Not only did Wallace support her through thick and thin, but Hulse has been one to impact Wallace's life as well.

“There’s that bible verse that says, 'Iron Sharpens Iron' and if I can keep Lillian by my side my whole life I would be sharpest person you will ever meet,” said Wallace. “With Lillian’s incredible accomplishments and unwavering faith, it kept me so grounded and when her name got called (to be State President) I don't think I have felt that much pride in my heart for someone to be related to my job. It was proud moment for all of us at Minneapolis and especially those that have all worked closely with her."

Wallace said she 'shed tears' when Hulse became the Kansas FFA State President for the 2025-2026 year.

Hulse is the State President for Kansas FFA that consists of 13,528 members.

Minneapolis student makes history for the Kansas FFA student led organization

The Tamara Howe School of Dance and Ballet Salina are excited to announce that they will be hosting the world-class Joffrey Workshop on July 26th &amp; 27th. This 2 day event will offer classes in ballet, contemporary, jazz, variations and more in Salina.

The Joffrey Workshop has been inspiring generations of dancers for over 45 years, thanks to the innovative vision of Robert Joffrey. Under the passionate direction and guidance of Mauro Villanueva and Kenny Borchard – highly sought-after instructors known for their inclusive teaching style – students gain a deep understanding not only of technique, tradition and artistry, but also of themselves.

These workshops will help nurture an appreciation of dance, while providing positive learning experiences.&nbsp;

Joffrey Ballet Workshop coming to Salina 

With harvest season just around the corner, local authorities and agricultural officials are reminding motorists to stay alert and cautious when encountering slow-moving farm equipment on rural roads.

As farmers across Kansas gear up for one of the busiest times of year, rural roadways will see an increased presence of large machinery and trucks. These vehicles, which often travel at speeds of 25 mph or less, can pose safety challenges for unsuspecting drivers.

Harvest season is a critical time for our agricultural communities. It’s also a time when there are more accidents involving farm equipment, most of which are preventable with a little extra caution.

Here are safety tips to help prevent accidents:

 </figure>With harvest season just around the corner, local authorities and agricultural officials are reminding motorists to stay alert and cautious when encountering slow-moving farm equipment on rural roads.As farmers across Kansas gear up for one of the busiest times of year, rural roadways will see an increased presence of large machinery and trucks. These vehicles, which often travel at speeds of 25 mph or less, can pose safety challenges for unsuspecting drivers.Harvest season is a critical time for our agricultural communities. It’s also a time when there are more accidents involving farm equipment, most of which are preventable with a little extra caution.<figure>

 <li>Slow down and be patient: Farm machinery moves significantly slower than regular traffic. Allow extra time to reach your destination and resist the urge to speed or pass hastily.
</li><li>Stay alert and avoid distractions: Keep your focus on the road and your surroundings. Distractions like cell phones can delay your reaction time in critical moments.
</li><li>Give extra space: Large farm vehicles have limited visibility and require more time to stop. Maintain a safe following distance.
</li><li>Pass with care: Only pass farm equipment when it’s safe and legal. Make sure you have a clear view of the road ahead and confirm the equipment isn’t preparing to turn.
</li><li>Be aware of wide turns: Tractors and combines often need additional room to navigate intersections or turn into fields. Slow down and watch for turning signals.
</li><li>Recognize slow-moving vehicle signs: Farm vehicles are marked with a red-and-orange triangular emblem, indicating they are traveling 25 mph or slower.
</li><li>Don’t assume the operator sees you: Loud engines and blind spots can prevent farmers from noticing nearby vehicles. Always drive defensively.

A Salina based produced film looks to put the 'city on the map' and the filmmakers can use your help to complete it.

10 years in the making is the Salina based produced film "Limerence," which is a mixed-media film (half is hand drawn animated and the other half is in person) and the Kansan filmmakers is starting a fundraiser to complete the movie.

According to Salina Writer and Director of the film Isaiah Marcotte, 'Limerence' is a "Rock-Opera film," with the movie itself having a complete album soundtrack.&nbsp;

"This (film) is 10 years put in of all the available time that we had,” said Marcotte. “This is the one thing that I have been working on for the last 10 years, which has been full of countless hours.”

According to Marcotte, the soundtrack is entirely produced by local musicians. 

The soundtrack has not been released yet.

According to Marcotte, the money spent on this film were entirely out of his 'producer team’s pockets from their day jobs.' Marcotte believes this film will be an ‘important cultural staple in Kansas.’ He claims that they have received a great response, after early cuts of the movie that have been shown.

"We want to put Salina on the map with the film," said Marcotte. "We also want to present the work out of over 50 artists in the community that have helped contribute their time."

This film however cannot put 'Salina on the map' if it does not get finished. The filmmakers have decided to launch a fundraiser dedicated to the completion of the film, that will occur on Saturday, June 28th from&nbsp;4:00 pm - 11:00 pm at The Temple on&nbsp;336 S. Sante Fe (3rd floor).&nbsp;

A 'kickstarter' will be launched as well on the 28th where people wanting to donate can do so online. Salina Presbyterian Manor seeking help from the community to establish its $10-million expansion campaign

United Methodist Health Ministry Fund Release

HUTCHINSON - New modeling shows 13,000 fewer Kansans would be able to enroll in Medicaid under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” recently passed by the U.S. House, and the state would lose $3.77 billion in total Medicaid funding. Such losses would lead to higher uninsured rates and create more financial struggles for rural hospitals already on the brink of closure.

These results were recently released by Manatt Health, which conducted the analysis at the request of Kansas health philanthropies United Methodist Health Ministry Fund and REACH Healthcare Foundation. The two organizations wanted to better understand the financial and enrollment impacts of the bill, which would cut $700 billion from Medicaid and is awaiting a vote in the Senate.

Medicaid, the public health insurance program that covers more than 366,000 Kansans, is funded jointly by the state and federal government. It provides low-income parents, children, seniors and people with disabilities with health insurance. Adults who do not have children do not qualify for Medicaid in Kansas.

While many of the bill’s deepest funding cuts and new restrictions are aimed at states that expanded Medicaid to cover more people, the analysis shows Kansas will still face significant coverage losses and funding reductions over the next 10 years.

“If this bill passes, it will cause long-lasting harm to thousands of families&nbsp;across Kansas and seriously threaten the survival of rural hospitals across the state,” said Brenda Sharpe, president and CEO at REACH Healthcare Foundation.

<a>The modeling showed $2.29 billion in lost federal Medicaid funding alone and $3.77 billion when combined with associated state funding losses over a 10-year period.</a>

Manatt said the losses are even greater than shown in the analysis, as data limitations made it unable to model all the provisions in the bill. The estimates do not account for prohibitions on states setting up any new provider taxes or increasing assessments for other providers. That will cause Kansas health care providers, including nursing homes and other health providers, to lose critical funding over time and cause them to become even more financially vulnerable.

Coverage losses due to the bill’s changes to the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace also couldn’t be modeled; however, they will result in additional Kansans losing health insurance.

Not only will the bill remove people’s health insurance, but it also will remove food assistance. The bill includes $300 billion in cuts from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

“Congress is trying to rush a plan through the process that will take health care and food assistance away from tens of thousands of Kansans, including children, seniors and people with disabilities,” said David Jordan, president and CEO at the Health Fund. “At a time when hospitals are trying to keep their doors open and working families are struggling to keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables, we cannot afford these cuts.”

Kansas already has more hospitals at risk of closure than any other state in the country. Sixty-three rural hospitals are currently at risk, and 87% of Kansas rural hospitals are operating in the red. These hospitals struggle to survive with existing federal funding. Provisions in the bill would cause them to lose billions, making it even harder to stay open. When rural hospitals close, it removes job opportunities in addition to access to health care, creating a ripple effect in small communities.

 </figure>K-State Research &amp; Extension Central Kansas DistrictEllie Vincent began serving as the new Central Kansas District 4-H Youth Development Agent on June 9. The Central Kansas District serves the citizens of Ottawa and Saline Counties. She will start with her primary office being in Salina.Originally from Virginia, Vincent earned her bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences &amp; Industry from Kansas State University. She brings an extensive 4-H and FFA background as well as valuable experience from her internship with Virginia Cooperative Extension. Vincent has most recently been employed as an animal health student employee for the Kansas Department of Agriculture in Manhattan, Kansas.4-H youth development agents develop and deliver educational programs for school-aged youth. This includes supporting community clubs, out-of-school programs, school enrichment, volunteer management, and outreach to create new program opportunities with new and existing community partners.Local extension faculty are jointly employed in a partnership between K-State Research and Extension, headquartered on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, and the local Extension board.More information about K-State Research and Extension – Central Kansas District is available online at centralkansas.k-state.edu.
