Three day weather forecast Salina, September 3 - September 5

The Salina Symphony’s 70th Anniversary Season will open with a stellar multimedia concert on Sunday, October 5&nbsp;at 4:00 pm at the Stiefel Theatre.&nbsp;

The concert will open with a breathtaking performance of Holst’s majestic The Planets, featuring world renowned projection artist Camilla Tassi’s visual interpretation of the iconic score, including images from the Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival.&nbsp;

Following intermission, Daniel Slatkin’s evocative “Voyager 130” will transport you to the farthest reaches of space. The concert will culminate in a thrilling trio of themes from Star Wars: Imperial March, Duel of the Fates, and Main Title.&nbsp;

“This program offers a rare opportunity to experience the grandeur of Holst’s The Planets alongside the iconic scores of Star Wars,” said Yaniv Segal, music director. “Enhanced by striking visual elements, the performance invites audiences to explore the intersection of music, outer space, and cinematic storytelling on a truly cosmic scale.”&nbsp;

The orchestra will be joined by the KWU Philharmonic Choir and select ensembles from Salina Central, Salina South, and Southeast of Saline High Schools.&nbsp;

This project is funded in part by the Horizons Grants Program of the Salina Arts and Humanities Foundation. Funding is provided by Horizons, a private donor group.&nbsp;

Beginning Thursday, September 4, the Utilities Department will be working in the 400 block of W. South Street. Pavement will be removed to replace a water service. W. South Street will be closed to traffic between S. 9th Street and S. 10th Street. Eastbound W. South Street traffic will be detoured north on S. 10th Street and then east on Walnut Street.

Westbound W. South Street traffic may turn north or south at S. 9th Street. Residents will be provided access from S. 10th Street. 

Work is expected to last two weeks, weather permitting.&nbsp;

Appropriate barriers will be in place to ensure the safety of workers. Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to find alternate routes.&nbsp;

City of Salina expects two weeks of construction work to occur north of town

A Texas man was cited for allegedly exposing himself towards a woman in West Salina.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Tuesday, September 2nd at around 7:30 pm, a female employee of Subway (676 Westport Blvd.) reported about a man who allegedly exposed himself to her when she was outside the restaurant during her break.&nbsp;

After the man exposed himself, he entered a semi-truck and fled the scene. The woman then called SPD about the incident and shortly after, an officer on patrol located the semi that matched the description of her report.

The officer conducted a traffic stop at the 86 mile marker (Smolan Rd.). The driver of the semi was identified as the same man who exposed himself to the woman.

The suspect was identified as 37-year old, Decorius Haynes (Missouri City, TX) and was issued a Notice to Appear (NTA) citation for Lewd and Lasciviousness.&nbsp;

Haynes was released from the Saline County Jail that same evening, and is expected to appear at the Salina Municipal Court.

Texas man cited for allegedly exposing himself in West Salina

A juvenile was arrested after allegedly stabbing a teenage boy, threatening a teenage girl and pushing a male child.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) in the evening hours of Friday, August 29th, a 17-year old boy was reportedly transported to the ER at Salina Regional Hospital, after he suffered a stab wound to his stomach. An officer interviewed the boy and further information revealed that there was a 'large gathering at Indian Rock Park' before he was stabbed.

Reportedly, a disturbance occurred during the midst of the gathering, which led to a 17-year female suspect who allegedly stabbed the boy in the stomach with a small knife. SPD stated the suspect also threatened to 'slit the throat' of a 17-year old girl and pushed an 8-year old boy.

Later that same night, authorities were able to locate the suspect at a home in South Salina. Authorities arrested the suspect without incident for the following requested charges of:

Aggravated Battery, Possession of Marijuana, Battery and Criminal Threat.

The 17-year old suspect was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City, KS.

Saline County Jail Bookings, September 3

Governor Kelly has directed flags to be flown at half-staff on all state buildings, grounds and facilities on Wednesday, September 3,&nbsp;in honor of Kansas City, KS police officer, Hunter Simoncic.

Officer Simoncic was killed&nbsp;in the line of duty on Tuesday, August 26.

“The death of a law enforcement officer is always a tragedy, and Hunter Simoncic diligently protected and served Kansans,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Beyond his work as a police officer, he was committed to leaving a lasting positive impact on the Kansas City community. Governor directs flags flown half-staff in honor of fallen officer

Salina Police arrest a suspect for allegedly setting a house on fire.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Monday, September 1 at around 11:30 am, witnesses in the area of the 700 block of N. 8th reported a that a home was on fire.

SPD and the Salina Fire Department (SFD) arrived to the scene and discovered the back of the home was on fire. Nobody was inside during the event of the fire.&nbsp;

SFD determined the cause of fire was by 'arson.'

A witness reported about seeing a man running away from the residence. Afterwards, officers located the possible suspect in the 800 block of N. Broadway. Officers determined the suspect matched the description of the witness report.

Officers noticed the suspect smelled of gas and located methamphetamine on him as well. SPD further arrested 29-year old, Marquis Wellington.

Wellington was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of Arson and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Suspect arrested for alleged arson in North Salina

Suspect arrested after allegedly choking a woman inside a Salina home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday, August 31 just after midnight, a 41-year old woman reported a 27-year old man identified as Drew Southern, allegedly assaulted her at a home in the 900 block of S. Santa Fe.

Reportedly, the victim and Southern got into an argument when he allegedly knocked off her glasses, breaking them. Afterwards, Southern then put the victim in a chokehold, restricting her breathing before letting go.&nbsp;

The victim was able to call police shortly after and upon arrival, officers arrested Southern without incident. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges:&nbsp;

Aggravated Domestic Battery, Domestic Battery and Criminal Damage to Property (for breaking the victim's glasses).

SPD stated alcohol was suspected to be factor. 

The victim and Southern were acquaintances.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Monday, September 1 at around 4:20 pm, a 71-year old man reported that his lime-green "Wired" (brand) electrical bicycle was stolen from his garage on the 100 block of W. Key.

The man stated he had his garage open when he was mowing in his backyard. Reportedly, an unknown suspect had entered his garage and stole the bike.

A woman calls police after driving away from man who was following her throughout Salina.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Saturday, August 30 at around 1:30 pm, a 41-year old woman called SPD regarding a known acquaintance identified as 34-year old, Mark Storms was following her across town in a vehicle.&nbsp;

Before Storms was following her, the woman stated she received around 30 calls from him. The woman was in her vehicle when Storms was following her and she made several turns across town to get away from him.

As she was driving, the woman was on the phone with SPD and advised her to drive towards the police department's station. Storms followed her and when they arrived to the station, officers were on site awaiting their arrival.

Officers then arrested Storms without incident and was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges:

Salina Police are searching for a suspect who allegedly burglarized a bar.&nbsp;

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday, August 31 at around 6:30 am, employees of Hanks Tavern (116 S Broadway Blvd.) reported of an alleged burglary that occurred.&nbsp;

Reportedly, an employee noticed the bar had been forced open the night before. The employee stated an unknown suspect broke into cash registers and an arcade machine. SPD stated the suspect stole money from the machine only, but not from the cash registers since it was empty.

Furthermore, several bottles of alcohol were stolen and a vehicle parked in the back of the bar was broken into as well. The suspect allegedly stole a bottle of cologne from the vehicle.

Total loss and damage was listed to be around $1,700.

No identification of suspect was given at this time. SPD is currently awaiting surveillance video from the bar.

A series of showers and possible thunderstorms, along with mild temperatures are expected for this week.

In the middle of downtown Salina (200 block of Santa Fe), the Local Food Works Foundation will be holding their annual fundraiser. Check-in starts at 5:00 pm with a&nbsp;Cash Bar&nbsp;opening at 5:30 pm, and the dinner runs from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

This fundraiser celebrates the local food system, featuring a gourmet meal prepared by local chefs using local ingredients. It also helps raise awareness&nbsp;to showcase Saline County chefs and farmers.

The Saline County AFA Community, in partnership with Agriculture Future of America (AFA), has awarded the prestigious AFA Leader and Academic Scholarship to Anna Karber and Caden Parry from Saline County, KS. 

Each scholarship, valued at $3,200, recognizes academic achievement, leadership potential, and a commitment to pursuing a career in food, agriculture, and natural resources.&nbsp;

Anna Karber, a Southeast of Saline graduate, is attending Kansas State University this fall and is majoring in Animal Science and Industry. 

Caden Parry, also a Southeast of Saline graduate, is attending Fort Hays State University with a major in Agronomy and a minor in Agribusiness Management.&nbsp;

Through the Saline County AFA Community Scholarship, Karber and Parry will not only receive financial assistance but also gain access to the transformative AFA Leaders Conference in November. This premier leadership development experience equips students with the skills to bridge the gap between college and career.&nbsp;

“We are extremely proud to connect Anna and Caden to the AFA network through this scholarship and not only support them financially, but also help them gain access to opportunities that will help them build careers in the agriculture industry,” said Jason Kern, Community Coordinator for the Saline County AFA Partnership. “This scholarship would not be possible without the support of our local community donors, who show these kids that their local community believes in their future.”&nbsp;

AFA community scholarships are funded by dedicated volunteers across eight states who raise funds to support these awards. Donors raised locally are then matched by the national AFA organization to complete the award. 

Because of consistent donor support, Saline County has awarded more than 50 scholarships since the partnership began in 1998. Many of the scholarship recipients have come back to live and work in the Saline County community.&nbsp;

 </figure>Agriculture Future of AmericaThe Saline County AFA Community, in partnership with Agriculture Future of America (AFA), has awarded the prestigious AFA Leader and Academic Scholarship to Anna Karber and Caden Parry from Saline County, KS. Each scholarship, valued at $3,200, recognizes academic achievement, leadership potential, and a commitment to pursuing a career in food, agriculture, and natural resources.&nbsp;Anna Karber, a Southeast of Saline graduate, is attending Kansas State University this fall and is majoring in Animal Science and Industry. Caden Parry, also a Southeast of Saline graduate, is attending Fort Hays State University with a major in Agronomy and a minor in Agribusiness Management.&nbsp;Through the Saline County AFA Community Scholarship, Karber and Parry will not only receive financial assistance but also gain access to the transformative AFA Leaders Conference in November. This premier leadership development experience equips students with the skills to bridge the gap between college and career.&nbsp;“We are extremely proud to connect Anna and Caden to the AFA network through this scholarship and not only support them financially, but also help them gain access to opportunities that will help them build careers in the agriculture industry,” said Jason Kern, Community Coordinator for the Saline County AFA Partnership. “This scholarship would not be possible without the support of our local community donors, who show these kids that their local community believes in their future.”&nbsp;AFA community scholarships are funded by dedicated volunteers across eight states who raise funds to support these awards. Donors raised locally are then matched by the national AFA organization to complete the award. Because of consistent donor support, Saline County has awarded more than 50 scholarships since the partnership began in 1998. Two Saline County college students receive prestigious agriculture scholarship

Grain growers in central Kansas who plan to campaign for a seat on one of the state’s five grain commodity commissions — corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers — should be gathering petition signatures now to meet the November 30, 2025, filing deadline.

Voting will take place in January-February 2026.

The 2026 election will cover districts IV, V, VI — or the central third of Kansas.

Clay, Cloud, Jewell, Mitchell, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Republic, Rooks, Smith, and Washington counties.District V:&nbsp;Barton, Dickinson, Ellis, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Marion, McPherson, Rice, Rush, Russell, and Saline counties.

Barber, Comanche, Edwards, Harper, Harvey, Kingman, Kiowa, Pawnee, Pratt, Reno, Sedgwick, Stafford, and Sumner counties.

To be eligible to run, candidates must have been actively engaged in growing that commodity (corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers) within the preceding five years and must reside in and represent the district where they maintain their primary residence. 

To be included on the 2026 ballot, candidates must gather 20 signatures from eligible growers, with no more than five signatures from any one county.&nbsp;

Eligible growers are Kansas residents who will be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026, and who have actively grown corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers or wheat for the last three years.&nbsp;

Candidates may choose to collect signatures either on paper or online, or by using a combination of both.

A community fundraiser is underway to help Juan and Zulma De Leon, owners of the popular 805 Tacos food truck, after a devastating fire on August 27 destroyed their business and main source of income.

805 Tacos has been more than a food truck—it’s been a gathering place where neighbors lined up for authentic tacos and warm hospitality. Now, Salina is rallying to bring it back.

Donations will go directly toward replacing the truck, restocking supplies, and helping the De Leons get back on their feet.
