Great news continues to come out of the Kansas Wesleyan University campus, as the school recently announced that it projects fall enrollment to exceed 950 students. That is the third consecutive year the school has topped that plateau and the first time that has occurred in school history.&nbsp;

Among the 952 projected students, 575 are returning to campus, the second-highest total in university history. It is the first time in school history that KWU has posted more than 500 returning undergraduate students for three straight years. The university estimates 525 students are in campus housing, the second-highest total ever and nearly 35% more than 2019.&nbsp;

“It’s been a great three years, filled with tremendous accomplishments and numerous firsts,” said KWU President Dr. Matt Thompson. “We’re proud of these enrollment records, three straight KCAC Commissioner’s Cups, three straight years with 100% pass rates on the NCLEX and the list goes on. Our students continue to excel on the field, in the classroom and in the community, thanks to our numerous supporters. We are truly grateful to everyone who hires KWU interns, serves as a host family or attends an on-campus event, because each of those helps foster the KWU experience for students.”

KWU’s incoming students hail from 37 states and 21 countries, helping to enhance the diversity of the campus&nbsp;and community experience. Pre-Nursing and Business are the most popular majors for new students. The first-year student grade point average (GPA) is 3.51 and incoming transfer&nbsp;sits&nbsp;at 3.22.&nbsp;

Overall, the university projects the same enrollment as Fall 2023 and continues a trend that has seen a 34.6% increase in total enrollment since 2019. The MBA program looks to be an important part of that success moving forward, as the returning MBA student number nearly doubled in just one year, helped by several key scholarship offerings.&nbsp;

“Community has always been a key part of what drives Kansas Wesleyan forward,” said Executive Vice President Ken Oliver. “We’re pleased that the MBA scholarship offerings we’ve developed, highlighted by the Saline County MBA Scholarship, appear to be opening doors to workers throughout the county to further their education. That, in the process, builds an even better community.”

The university saw the largest graduating class in its history last year, a group that approached 200 individuals. In addition, a certificate program tied to off-site efforts concluded and COVID-related eligibility, related to some student-athletes returning for Masters’ programs, wrapped up.&nbsp;

“We recruit alumni at Kansas Wesleyan, not just students,” said Oliver. “We achieved all of those goals, thanks to great work by faculty, staff and numerous coaches, led and mentored by Admissions. Kansas Wesleyan is here for the long haul, and we are ready to help build up North Central Kansas for the next 140 years!”&nbsp;

Kansas Wesleyan’s Fall 2025 enrollment will become official on the 20th day of the semester, Monday, Sept. 15.&nbsp;

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about suicide prevention, highlight the importance of recognizing warning signs, and ensure that everyone knows help is available through crisis hotlines such as the 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline.&nbsp;

Suicide is a leading cause of death in Kansas, impacting not only individuals and families but entire communities. 

Access to timely care and crisis services is a proven protective factor that can save lives. Hotlines such as 988, the Veterans Crisis Line, the Trevor Project, the Farm Aid Hotline, and the Crisis Text Line provide immediate, confidential support 24/7 for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis.&nbsp;

Throughout September, Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) is working with community partners to distribute 988 awareness materials and promote crisis services across the region. The goal is to make sure every resident knows where to turn in a moment of need.&nbsp;

“We want people to know that they are not alone, and that help is always available,” said Crisis Director Esther Kency. “Whether through 988, CKMHC’s mobile crisis services, mental health co-responders, or other trusted hotlines, immediate support is out there for anyone experiencing a mental health or suicidal crisis.”&nbsp;

Everyone has a role to play in suicide prevention. CKMHC encourages individuals to:&nbsp;

· Learn the warning signs and reach out when someone may be struggling.&nbsp;

· Reduce the stigma around mental health by speaking openly and compassionately.&nbsp;

· Share resources and offer support to friends, family, and neighbors.&nbsp;

· Promote access to care, a proven protective factor that saves lives.&nbsp;

Together, we can foster a community of hope, support, and compassion for all affected by suicide.&nbsp;

As the Museum prepares for its 1950s exhibit, it’s the perfect time to feature Nelly Don, a Kansas native who revolutionized the apparel industry. 

Join Marla Day as she introduces Nelly Don, a Parsons native, who built a fashion empire. Day will discuss the vision, hard work, fair treatment of her workers and more that made Nelly Don the largest dressmaker of the 20th century. Day is the curator of Kansas State University’s Historic Costume and Textile Museum in Manhattan. Humanities Kansas underwrites this presentation.

Museum hosts free presentation about fashion icon, Nelly Don

The Salina Area United Way is taking bold steps to expand its reach and impact across North Central Kansas. 

As part of its refreshed mission and vision, United Way will be focusing on building new resources and programs to strengthen all ten counties it serves: Saline, Ellsworth, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Mitchell, Lincoln, Russell, Jewell, and Osborne.&nbsp;

“Our goal is simple: to unite people and resources in ways that create resilient, thriving communities,” said Christina Small, Executive Director of the Salina Area United Way. “This expansion is about being more intentional with our efforts, ensuring that every county in our region feels the impact of United Way’s work. And just as importantly, every dollar raised will stay in that local county, invested back into their communities."&nbsp;

One area of immediate focus will be the continued growth of the Early Childcare Initiative, which will soon expand to support in-home childcare providers in addition to licensed centers. This work is designed to address one of the region’s most pressing challenges—accessible and affordable childcare—while also supporting providers who play a vital role in early childhood development.&nbsp;

As part of this growth, United Way will place its Funded Partner program on a one-year pause to allow greater focus on expanding its reach and initiatives. This pause will not reduce or cut any existing programs or resources; instead, it allows the organization to focus on building new opportunities that will strengthen families and communities across the region. 

As United Way evolves its approach, it remains deeply committed to the organizations that make our region stronger. Many of these partners will continue working alongside United Way through new collaborative initiatives, ensuring that vital programs remain supported while the organization extends its impact across all ten counties.&nbsp;

“This is an exciting moment for us,” added Christina. “We’re not stepping back from our community—we’re stepping up to serve more people, in more places, and in more meaningful ways than ever before.”&nbsp;

United Way takes steps to expand resources across 10 counties

SOLOMON - As the 2025-26 school year begins anew, USD 393 takes time to reflect on the achievements and significant contributions made by our esteemed Gorilla Family community. 

We are excited to announce the fourth annual Hall of Fame ceremony taking place on Friday, September 5th&nbsp;at halftime of the first home football game against Rural Vista.&nbsp;

Organized by the USD 393 Board of Education, nominated by the Solomon community and voted in by the Hall of Fame committee, a select group of individuals are recognized for their achievements in academics, activities, athletics and community stewardship. These select few receive the honor of joining the Gorilla Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

 The class of 2025 embodies the characteristics we hope all Gorilla students will aspire to be over time. This class understands how service to a community and school can impact generations over time.&nbsp;

Our first recognition goes to Delos and Judy (Willis) Brown, New Cambria natives, who have been pillars of support for USD 393 and the Solomon community. Judy served eight years on the School Board, while Delos helped establish the Solomon Recreation Board and contributed to launching the district's first Safe After Prom. Delos has driven buses for Solomon Schools for over 20 years, faithfully transporting students to games and meets. 

Together, they've cheered on countless teams and supported students in every activity. They are a three-generation Gorilla family; Delos (Class of 1961) &amp; Judy (Class of 1964), their children: Lori Brown 1982, Deb Brown/Robertson 1987, &amp; Darin Brown 1990 and their grandchildren: Ely Creach 2006 and Dara Robertson 2019. The Browns never miss an opportunity to support students in their extracurricular activities. Their legacy of service and school spirit runs deep.&nbsp;

The next recognition is for Linda Klucas who began her service to USD 393 in 1973 and started part-time in the kitchen later before becoming full-time manager. She introduced innovations like a salad bar, self-service station, and even an ice cream machine-bringing joy to generations of students. If you ate a meal at an alumni banquet, Linda probably prepared it with her kitchen co-workers. 

Linda launched the district's breakfast program and served on numerous committees such as: 

State Board Nominating Committee, the committee for the after-school program, the High School Parent Advisory Board and was the County Treasurer for District 5 Food Service. 

She also contributed to the community through roles on the library Board, Senior Center Board, and St. Ann's Catholic Women’s Auxiliary. After retiring, she continued serving by transporting students to Salina until her full retirement in 2024. 

Linda's legacy is one of care, dedication, and lasting impact.&nbsp;

Third up is 1961 alumni of Solomon High School, James Atkisson who has dedicated over 35 years to education and 25 years to the food and health industries. His ties to the community began with his parents, Virgil and Virginia (Vertner) who were also graduates of Solomon High School. He earned his first degree in Business Education in 1965 with multiple degrees to follow. 

James was honored in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1965. A finalist for Kansas Teacher of the Year in 1975, James was also named USD 393 Staff Member of the Year in 2019 and 2021. He has a robust history of service with roles as Athletic Director for 7 years, substitute teacher for 3 years, and School Board Representative on the Solomon Rec Board for 5 years. He also dedicated time within the community where he served on the Dickinson County Election Board for 8 years.

He officiated&nbsp;high school and NCAA basketball for 15 years and coached middle school basketball for 2 years. His commitment to education and athletics continues to inspire. There are not enough words to describe the impact Jim has had in the years since he moved back. Our coaches and our students thank you for always showing us what having PRIDE means! Once a Gorilla-Always a Gorilla!&nbsp;

Our last recognition goes to Wyatt Thompson, Solomon High School Class of 1974, who built a distinguished career in broadcast journalism. After early roles at Fort Hays State and Colorado State, he became the Voice of the Kansas State Wildcats in 2002. A six-time Kansas Sportscaster of the Year, Wyatt was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2022. 

During his time at SHS, he was active in FFA and livestock judging. Wyatt's passion for sports and storytelling has made him a role model for Solomon students and athletes. He remains deeply grateful for his roots in Solomon. We are very proud of where this Gorilla started and what he has accomplished in his career. His voice rings over the airwaves during each Wildcat game! Hearing that voice each time on the radio makes us GORILLA PROUD.&nbsp;

Each inductee will be honored with a commemorative plaque, displayed in the school's Hall of Fame. The Solomon School District extends its heartfelt congratulations to the 2025 inductees and invites the entire community to join in the celebration at the football game this Friday night.&nbsp;

Congratulations to our soon-to-be members of the Gorilla Hall of Fame; we are so excited to induct you this fall. We extend our gratitude to all the community members who submitted their nominations and made this possible.

This class understands how service to a community and school can impact generations over time.&nbsp;<h2>Delos &amp; Judy Brown</h2>Our first recognition goes to Delos and Judy (Willis) Brown, New Cambria natives, who have been pillars of support for USD 393 and the Solomon community. Judy served eight years on the School Board, while Delos helped establish the Solomon Recreation Board and contributed to launching the district's first Safe After Prom. Delos has driven buses for Solomon Schools for over 20 years, faithfully transporting students to games and meets. Together, they've cheered on countless teams and supported students in every activity. They are a three-generation Gorilla family; Delos (Class of 1961) &amp; Judy (Class of 1964), their children: Lori Brown 1982, Deb Brown/Robertson 1987, &amp; Darin Brown 1990 and their grandchildren: Ely Creach 2006 and Dara Robertson 2019. The Browns never miss an opportunity to support students in their extracurricular activities. Their legacy of service and school spirit runs deep.&nbsp;<h2>Linda Klucas</h2>The next recognition is for Linda Klucas who began her service to USD 393 in 1973 and started part-time in the kitchen later before becoming full-time manager. She introduced innovations like a salad bar, self-service station, and even an ice cream machine-bringing joy to generations of students. If you ate a meal at an alumni banquet, Linda probably prepared it with her kitchen co-workers. Linda launched the district's breakfast program and served on numerous committees such as: State Board Nominating Committee, the committee for the after-school program, the High School Parent Advisory Board and was the County Treasurer for District 5 Food Service. She also contributed to the community through roles on the library Board, Senior Center Board, and St. Ann's Catholic Women’s Auxiliary. After retiring, she continued serving by transporting students to Salina until her full retirement in 2024. Linda's legacy is one of care, dedication, and lasting impact.&nbsp;<h2>James Atkisson</h2>Third up is 1961 alumni of Solomon High School, James Atkisson who has dedicated over 35 years to education and 25 years to the food and health industries. His ties to the community began with his parents, Virgil and Virginia (Vertner) who were also graduates of Solomon High School. He earned his first degree in Business Education in 1965 with multiple degrees to follow. James was honored in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1965. A finalist for Kansas Teacher of the Year in 1975, James was also named USD 393 Staff Member of the Year in 2019 and 2021. He has a robust history of service with roles as Athletic Director for 7 years, substitute teacher for 3 years, and School Board Representative on the Solomon Rec Board for 5 years. He also dedicated time within the community where he served on the Dickinson County Election Board for 8 years.He officiated&nbsp;high school and NCAA basketball for 15 years and coached middle school basketball for 2 years. His commitment to education and athletics continues to inspire. There are not enough words to describe the impact Jim has had in the years since he moved back. Our coaches and our students thank you for always showing us what having PRIDE means! Once a Gorilla-Always a Gorilla!&nbsp;<h2>Wyatt Thompson</h2>Our last recognition goes to Wyatt Thompson, Solomon High School Class of 1974, who built a distinguished career in broadcast journalism. After early roles at Fort Hays State and Colorado State, he became the Voice of the Kansas State Wildcats in 2002. A six-time Kansas Sportscaster of the Year, Wyatt was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2022. During his time at SHS, he was active in FFA and livestock judging. Wyatt's passion for sports and storytelling has made him a role model for Solomon students and athletes. He remains deeply grateful for his roots in Solomon. We are very proud of where this Gorilla started and what he has accomplished in his career. His voice rings over the airwaves during each Wildcat game! Hearing that voice each time on the radio makes us GORILLA PROUD.&nbsp;Each inductee will be honored with a commemorative plaque, displayed in the school's Hall of Fame. Saline County Jail Bookings, August 30

A non-generational funeral home business has just arrived in Salina and the owner is one of the only women to do so in town.

On August 15th, Kara Heier-Scott, Owner/Founder of Heier Scott Mortuary and Cremations, bought the 45 plus year operated and generational funeral home, "Roselawn Memorial." Now, the new funeral home is operating in two locations in Salina.

Heier Scott Mortuary and Cremations will be operating their embalming services on 1423 W. Crawford, while their main location and funerals will be at the old Roselawn building on 1920 E. Crawford.&nbsp;

From nursing school to mortuary school: Learning the work-life balance of a full-time mortician

Before Heier-Scott bought Roselawn, she grew up in Western Kansas where she graduated high school. She was en route to pursuing nursing school and when it was time to write a research paper about specific career fields, her high school teacher advised her and four other students to pick a subject other than nursing. Heier-Scott decided to write about being a mortician, which introduced her to the mortuary business.

After high school, she went to nursing school in Colby, KS and realized this was something she did not want to do. Afterwards, she researched nearby mortuary schools and applied to one in Denver where she was accepted.&nbsp;In 2011, she graduated with a Mortuary degree and just strictly wanted to embalm in Denver. She then decided to come back to Kansas where she had a daughter of her own back home.

When she came back home, she received a phone call from a funeral home in her hometown in Western Kansas. Though she just wanted to do embalming due to avoiding the emotional side of meeting with families of lost loved ones, this funeral business was offering her to work in all of the aspects.

"I did not want to do it all, but I accepted it and started to learn that no family acts the same," said Heier-Scott. "You just have to learn how to adapt to that."

Heier-Scott then left that funeral business in her hometown and accepted a job offer in Salina in 2013. During her time at the funeral business in Salina, she continued to grow in her career.

"I met with more families there (Salina) and that is when I started to love meeting with them," she said. "I struggled at first, but you just have to adjust your personality for everybody depending on what they need."

She added the struggles of having a work-life balance, and not letting the experiences at work affect her outside of the workplace.

"I really struggled at first leaving my work at work," she added. "Having a small child of my own and doing small children funerals for other families was tough and I had to learn how to leave that at the workplace. It comes with the emotional side of things and if you are very empathetic you are always putting yourself in other's shoes, but I had to learn the boundaries of that because it would make the family more sorrowful."

After her time as a mortician in her first job in Salina, that is when on August 15th she bought Roselawn Mortuary and started "Heier Scott Mortuary &amp; Cremations."

Rich history of Roselawn, plus plans of renovation

Now that Heier-Scott is official, Kara and the staff plan on making renovations to the Mausoleum across the street from the funeral home/chapel (Roselawn building), plus upgrading the cemetery and roof of the Roselawn building.

"The Mausoleum needs alot of work and that is what we are going to hit hard," said Heier-Scott.

After the American Civil War (1861-1865), the US government gave formerly enslaved African Americans a <a href="https://www.actec.org/resource-center/video/40-acres-and-a-mule-reparations-and-the-estate-tax/">"mule and 40 acres"</a> (term to describe an unfulfilled promise made to formerly enslaved African Americans after the Civil War, which was intended to provide them with land and resources for economic self-sufficiency).

According to Kevin Lilley who manages the cemetery for Heier Scott Mortuary and Cremations, he stated that a freedman lived on the property of where the current Mausoleum sits and was essentially his "mule and 40 acres."&nbsp;

After some time, the <a href="https://www.roselawnsalina.com/history">Frobenius family</a> arrived from Germany and bought the land from the freedman, who made it a pig farm.&nbsp;

The Frobenius family then started "Roselawn Memorial Park" in 1926 and was owned by them for the past 50+ years.&nbsp;The funeral home and cemetery was then purchased on February 1, 2023 by Cris and Ginger Ford.&nbsp;

Lilley started working for the Frobenius family when he was 14. He added how he learned to resonate with a family's lost loved one and that he sees that family as his own.

"I look at it in the sense that we can assure you that your loved ones are taken care of," said Lilley. "I tell everybody I work with that you need to see those people as your own mom and dad you are servicing."

Heier-Scott still plans on leaving the Roselawn name sign outside the front of the funeral home/chapel building in honor of its rich history.&nbsp;

Roselawn would have celebrated its 100th year anniversary of service in 2027.

Kansas woman buys historic Roselawn Memorial and starts non-generational funeral business

MANHATTAN - Kansas entrepreneurs and early-stage startups have the opportunity to earn significant support from Kansas State University with a program designed to support state innovators.

The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/">College of Business Administration</a>&nbsp;is now accepting applications for the fall 2025&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/center-advancement-entrepreneurship/accelerator.html">Center for Entrepreneurship Accelerator program</a>, a premier initiative that equips entrepreneurs with the tools and resources needed to launch and grow their businesses.

Entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply by Sunday, September 14.

New this fall, the accelerator will offer two separate tracks:

Depending on their track, participants may gain access to faculty-led courses, hands-on student research teams, a world-class K-State alumni mentor network and up to $60,000 worth of equity-free grants. The program charges no participation fees; however, the selection process will be competitive

."Our Accelerator program allows us to leverage K-State's unique resources to support and grow entrepreneurial ventures," said Chad Jackson, director of the Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship. "I'm excited to expand the program to include opportunities for both idea-stage entrepreneurs and those leading existing high-growth businesses. By connecting them with our faculty, alumni mentors and students, we aim to provide meaningful support at every stage of the entrepreneurial journey."

Applications are open to both existing and aspiring founders of scalable, for-profit businesses or ideas, including student-led ventures. Selection criteria include identifying a meaningful problem and offering an innovative solution, demonstrating drive and adaptability, and showing a strong commitment to the venture.

Free health and cancer screenings will be held from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm on two upcoming Saturdays – October 4th and October 11th – at Tammy Walker Cancer Center located at 511 S Santa Fe in Salina, KS. The free screenings are hosted by the Kansas Masons, Salina Lodge #60, Tammy Walker Cancer Center, the Masonic Cancer Alliance (MCA), and The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer every day, and nearly 250 of those are diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer. 

The Centers for Disease Control reports that cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in Kansas, and the region has higher than average rates of skin cancer compared to other parts of the country. When it comes to the possibility of cancer, it is always better to catch a potential problem in the earliest stage possible. 

Anyone identified with a possible health concern at one of the free screenings is advised by the screening team to follow up with his/her local physician or provided with information on how to find a healthcare provider.&nbsp;

The scholarship will be awarded annually to returning Bethany College business majors to support their continued studies and internship opportunities.

The Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) is proud to announce the launch of the Kansas Amusement Management Permitting System (KAMPS), an innovative online portal designed to make amusement ride registration and permitting faster, easier and more secure for operators across the state.

Through KAMPS, operators can conveniently register their rides, manage permits and upload all required documents in one centralized, user-friendly location. This modernized system streamlines compliance, reduces paperwork and supports safer operations for amusement ride patrons throughout Kansas.

“The safety of Kansas residents and visitors is a top priority,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “By introducing the KAMPS portal, we’re giving amusement ride operators the tools they need to meet safety requirements quickly and efficiently, while ensuring our agency can provide the best oversight possible.”

Saline County announces chip seal maintenance to begin early September

ABILENE - Abilene will welcome visitors from across the country September 4-6, for the 60th Anniversary Seeley Genealogical Society (SGS) Reunion. This marks the first time in a decade the reunion has returned to Abilene, which last hosted the event in 2015.

The three-day reunion will be based at the historic Seelye Mansion, a nationally recognized landmark built in 1905 by Dr. A.B. Seelye. The mansion, still filled with its original Edison light fixtures and furnishings, offers a rare glimpse into early 20th-century life and continues to serve as a focal point for the Seeley family story.

Attendees will enjoy family history research sessions, workshops, group tours, and meals together, including a barbeque on the mansion grounds and a train excursion aboard the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad. A cherished tradition, the 2025 Reunion Quilt Raffle, will also take place during the event.

Terry Tietjens, longtime caretaker and historian of the Seelye Mansion,&nbsp;said the reunion is a fitting tribute to the family who built the home.

 </figure>Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors BureauABILENE - Abilene will welcome visitors from across the country September 4-6, for the 60th Anniversary Seeley Genealogical Society (SGS) Reunion. This marks the first time in a decade the reunion has returned to Abilene, which last hosted the event in 2015.The three-day reunion will be based at the historic Seelye Mansion, a nationally recognized landmark built in 1905 by Dr. A.B. Seelye. The mansion, still filled with its original Edison light fixtures and furnishings, offers a rare glimpse into early 20th-century life and continues to serve as a focal point for the Seeley family story.Attendees will enjoy family history research sessions, workshops, group tours, and meals together, including a barbeque on the mansion grounds and a train excursion aboard the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad.
