The United Methodist Church of the Cross has announced a backpack giveaway before the start of the upcoming school year.
According to the church, the giveaway will occur on Saturday, August 1 at 9:30 am on 1600 Rush Street in Salina.
Inside each backpack giveaway are the USD 305 required school supplies for each grade level.
There is no cost, no eligibility requirements, and the giveaway is without a per-family limit.
The giveaway is available for students in grades K-12.
For those wanting to volunteer can do so by following this schedule:
| July 29 at 5:30 pm - Sorting and bundling supplies.
| July 30 at 9:30 am - Packing supplies.
| August 1 at 9:00 am - Day of giveaway.
In the past, the church has given out hundreds of backpacks to K-12 students and their families before the start of the school year. In 2025, the church gave away over 500 backpacks.
With higher costs this year, the church plans to give away 700—but needs the community’s help.
$15 buys one backpack filled with school supplies.
