<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573736471612#">Central Kansas Death Care Collective</a> (CKDCC) will be hosting their second Death Storytelling hour here at Red Fern Booksellers. Three mothers will share their personal stories of losing a child.

The event will occur on Wednesday, October 8, 6:00 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S. Santa Fe Ave).

CKDCC holds events dedicated for others to talk about the reality of death and the struggles people may face with it.

The CKDCC is a collective of practitioners and caring individuals interested in the field of dying and death care in community. 

Their goal is to empower individuals and their families by promoting a holistic and community-centered approach to end-of-life care. They connect people to resources and information, provide educational opportunities and programs, assist with planning and information about alternative choices available, provide referrals to service providers and respond as needs arise in the community.&nbsp;

Collective of practitioners and individuals passionate about death care to speak at Red Fern

I’m Dean Klenda and I’m running for City Commission and I may not look like your typical city commissioner because I’m not. I’m young, I work as an operations manager for a security company based out of Wichita and I own my own business doing production for events and such.

My issues I’m running on are listed below.

a) Evaluate the management of Tonys Pizza Event Center, we need to bring more concerts and events to town. I grew up on Front Street near the TPEC and that parking lot was constantly full of people and traffic on weekends, dog shows, car shows, big events. Interacting with them as a vendor providing sound solutions to events the last 5-10 years has been a slope towards being harder and harder to make events successful and rudeness from management. I believe this event space is being wasted and needs to be more used, or find a new management company to increase the usage.

b) Fully help fund Salina Winter Grace and expand it if possible. I believe we have some excellent community resources for homelessness but believe we need an emergency short term shelter with a lower bar to entry to help people get brough to the resources we have for them (Ashby house, Rescue Mission, Salina Grace Community Resource center, and so on)

c) Stop spending public funds for “economic development for sports teams without proof of return on the economic development. I think 65,000 in two years to an external for-profit entity claiming economic development is nonsense. I think if a for profit entity needs that much money from a city, they need to evaluate the business there are running especially when it’s a for profit agency that only brings 5-10 events to a city for entertainment. 30k a year would be one great summer concert series with very good local and regional artists in a public space like city lights stage or even Eric Stein Stage.

d) Either repeal bsl and replacement with better policies based off behavior.

e) Bring back some actual form of public free weekly entertainment either during the summer season or longer, something like the old Friday night lives that happened weekly. Covid slowed this and now it’s very limited and not what we used to do and I feel like this is a sorely missed program.

f) Bring back the public forum to at least 5 minutes, if not 10. Citizens need time to speak up at meetings and we should allow them some reasonably amount of time. I don’t know the magic number that gives everyone a fair shot but also allows others the time to speak? Maybe 5/10? 3 is definitely not enough for people that might not be confident in public speaking.

Meet City Commission Candidate: Dean Klenda

The Salina Family YMCA is excited to announce the launch of its first "Teen Night," a new program designed to give local youth a safe and engaging space to connect, move, and grow. 

The event will take place Saturday, October 25,&nbsp;from 5:30 pm–8:00 pm at the Salina Family YMCA.

Open to teens ages 11–18, Teen Night will feature a wide variety of activities, including basketball, dodgeball, pickleball, racquetball, ping pong, video games, dance classes and a silent disco. Teens ages 14–18 will also have access to supervised lifting on the wellness floor. The evening will also include free food and drinks.

Adding to the night’s impact, the Salina Emergency Services have been invited to join in the fun, helping to build positive connections between youth and local first responders. The evening will close with a worship session led by Young Life and Ark Youth Church, offering teens a chance to reflect, connect and be encouraged.

“Teen Night is all about creating a space where young people feel like they belong,” said Sierra Kelley, Salina YMCA Sports Coordinator. “It’s a chance for teens to hang out, try new things and build positive relationships—with each other, with mentors and with the community.”

Registration for Teen Night is open September 22 through October 25. The event is free for members and non-members alike, and all youth ages 11–18 are welcome to attend.

Recent obituaries and service times

On Friday, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the protection of human life, stopped by Salina during their inaugural traveling memorial/tour, "AFTERMATH."

<a href="https://kfl.org/">Kansans for Life</a> launched AFTERMATH, a traveling memorial created in response to the 2019 Hodes &amp; Nauser v. Schmidt decision.

In 2015, the <a href="https://kscourts.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/News/2019-News-Releases/April-2019/Supreme-Court-announces-decision-in-Hodes-Nauser?utm_source=chatgpt.com">KS Legislature</a> enacted Senate Bill 95, which&nbsp;banned the use of the <a href="https://healthy.kaiserpermanente.org/health-wellness/health-encyclopedia/he.dilation-and-evacuation-d-e.tw2462#:~:text=Dilation%20and%20evacuation%20(D&amp;E)%20is,hospital%20for%20a%20few%20hours.">dilation &amp; evacuation (D &amp; E)</a> abortion procedure (a common second‑trimester method). A lawsuit was filed against the state in 2019 to argue that the KS Constitution "protects a woman's right to an abortion" and the bill "violates that right," because it prevents physicians from using the safest procedure for most second-trimester abortions.

The decision made, was the Kansas Constitution protects a woman's right to abortion and that it was substantially likely Senate Bill 95 violated that right.

According to annual reports from the <a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/DocumentCenter/View/29328/KS-Abortions-2022-PDF">Kansas Department of Health and Environment</a>, abortions in Kansas have increased since then:

Kansans for Life Director of Communications, Mackenzie Ayers stated the whole point of the tour is to "present the facts."

"The reason we are doing this, is to present the facts and show what is happening here in Kansas," Ayers said. "Alot of people are unaware that this is happening, and AFTERMATH helps shed light on an often hidden reality."

Ayers added, while everyone may not share their perspective, they will always do whatever it takes to support women.

"Someone may not agree, they may not be pro-life, but we support women and women deserve full information before an abortion is performed on her," she said. "We want to change hearts and minds, because we believe that we are in a cultural battle."

The tour invites and encourages people to have a respectful conversation, concerning the topic of abortion.

Becky Norlin, Co-Founder of <a href="https://www.centralkansasactivists.org/">Central Kansas Activists</a>,&nbsp;attended the event along with others to protest on the parking lot of Jerry Ivey Park. She gave her comments on where she stands with abortion.

"Every woman should have a choice and there is no right or wrong that we can decide for anybody else," she said.&nbsp;

Norlin added that teaching about sex-education in schools is important for people to prevent abortions.

"Who would not want less abortions? No woman wants to make that decision. That is a very cruel and hard decision, and so women should be supported through that," she said. "If we can lessen abortions through education, ensuring child care is provided, housing stability, food and being secure for these children, that is pro-life."

<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li_2024/b2023_24/members/rep_sanders_clarke_1/">Representative for the 69th District, Clark Sanders</a> made an appearance at the event to support Kansans for Life. Sanders said he is very active in pro-life legislation in Topeka and is advocating for direct election of Kansas Supreme Court Justices.

"There is a big initiative to change the way we choose the members of the Supreme Court (Kansas)," Sanders said. "I am advocating for direct election of Supreme Court Justices. We need to get our Supreme Court changed in Kansas and the only we can do that, is to figure out a new way to get Justices on the Supreme Court. That will be good for alot of things, not the least of which would be for pro-life causes."

The AFTERMATH tour will continue their traveling memorial on October 10 in Chanute. Afterwards, they will head to Basehor on October 18 and end in Ark City, October 25.

Nonprofit advocating for protecting human life stops by Salina during inaugural traveling memorial 

KANOPOLIS - Opened since 1952, the historic Kanopolis Drive-in Theater had their 2025 season cut short due to a broken 16-year old projector.

The single-screen Drive-in theater located on the northwest side of Kanopolis, KS, unexpectedly ended their 2025 season. Co-owner Jessica Eagle announced on the drive-in theater's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/v/16Reerrvpp/">Facebook</a> page that the projector is not fixable, after attempts to repair it.

To replace the projector, it will cost upwards of around $100,000.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Commerce encourages job seekers and employers searching for available talent to take part in this month’s Virtual Statewide Job Fair. 

Hosted by&nbsp;KANSASWORKS, the fair will take place from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm&nbsp;Wednesday, October 8.

“With our economy booming, there is no better time than now for working and job seeking Kansans to grow their professional skills and experience in a new position,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Whether you’re a fresh graduate, a transitioning service member or a senior associate looking for a new role — there is a new journey and chapter to be started for everyone, right here in Kansas.”

The Virtual Job Fair format allows people to fill out applications, chat live and interview virtually with participating employers.

This month’s Virtual Statewide Job Fair portal features helpful information such as a job seeker training video, a list of participating employers, and channels for attendees to register and log in. Jobseekers are encouraged to dress professionally, as they might be asked to engage in an interview.

Governor Laura Kelly has announced the launch of her statewide listening tour, "The People’s Budget." 

Throughout the fall, Governor Kelly will travel to 8 communities across Kansas to host town hall events where she will speak directly with Kansans, gathering their priorities for the state’s budget ahead of the 2026 legislative session.

“Today, I’m launching The People’s Budget tour, because Kansans should know and have a say in where their hard-earned taxpayer dollars are going,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“My administration has been laser-focused on building a strong fiscal foundation for our state. In the months ahead, it’s critical that we continue down the path of responsible budgeting to ensure Kansas does not return to the days of reckless fiscal mismanagement.”

The People’s Budget tour will launch on Thursday, October 9,&nbsp;at Salina South High School.

Governor Kelly will be joined at each event by Adam Proffitt, Director of the Budget/Secretary of the Kansas Department of Administration.

According to the Kelly administration, each January, the Governor presents a balanced budget proposal to the Kansas Legislature that outlines investments in education, health care, infrastructure, public safety, and other key areas. Moreover, the Kansas Legislature disregarded Governor's budget proposal, "opting to craft its own budget" according to the Kelly administration.

The Kelly administration added, the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.governor.ks.gov%2FHome%2FComponents%2FNews%2FNews%2F618%2F/1/01010199ba79a05f-427cee74-c40a-447c-bd0c-63ada3f4c6ef-000000/uIVRHJTUCEgARrUqgPG4NflEa-a4ZlLuw8NBPDuOfBU=425">budget passed in April</a>&nbsp;by the Legislature leaves the state "facing severe budget shortfalls in the years ahead."

Reportedly, the budget created by the state Legislature is projected to have Kansas spend $300 to $700 million more than it receives each year for the foreseeable future, jeopardizing the long-term fiscal health of the state.&nbsp;

Space at each venue will be limited and entrance will be on a first-come first-serve basis.

The Governor’s Office encourages RSVPs in advance to accurately gauge community interest in each event. Gov. Kelly to speak at Salina South, gathering priorities for 2026 state budget

The Salina Family YMCA has announced that registration is officially open for the Youth Winter Basketball season. 

Those who register on Monday receive early bird pricing.

The Salina Family YMCA offers programs for all young athletes. Those programs include:

- Little Tikes Basketball – for ages 2.5–5, introducing basic basketball skills, coordination and teamwork in a fun, engaging environment. Season runs Tuesdays, January 13 - February 17.

- Youth Basketball – for K–6th grade, focusing on skill development, sportsmanship, and teamwork through weekly practices and games. Season runs Saturdays, January 17 - February 21.

Get ready for upcoming most runner friendly Marathon in Kansas, which will be held on Saturday,&nbsp;November 8 in downtown Salina.

With a little over three months until race day there are 4,475 runners registered from all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and Tanzania, which puts Salina Crossroads on pace to be the largest marathon event in Kansas this year. 

There are over 2,000 runners registered from outside the state of Kansas and nearly 3,700 from outside of Salina. For the 2024 race, Visit Salina estimated that the Salina Crossroads Marathon generated $1,019,080 in economic impact for the Salina Community.

This year the Salina Crossroads Marathon will need more than 300 volunteers. 

Volunteers can sign up for the Salina Crossroads Marathon at <a href="https://salinacrossroadsmarathon.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=100689">https://salinacrossroadsmarathon.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=100689</a>.

Volunteer needs include course monitors, finish line and festival, and packet pickup. Course Monitors will ensure safety along the run course by assisting traffic across intersections, providing pedestrians/runners with course direction, and encouraging participants along the course. 

Festival volunteers will be placed in various areas around the finish line area and assist with the removal of timing chips, handing out participant finisher medals, distributing participant food/beverage items, and cleaning &amp; maintaining a green event. There are shifts on Friday (Nov 7) from 10:00 am - 8:00 pm and Saturday morning (Nov 8) starting at 6:00 am for packet pickup that includes assigning runners their bib number and getting them their race shirt.

"Volunteers are what separate the very best marathons from other races. We are often one of the highest rated marathons on national race sites and one of the most frequent comments is how amazing our volunteers are,” said Co-Race Director-Daniel Craig.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon has made a commitment to be a “Gold Standard” race by distributing 100% of race entry fees back to Saline County Youth Sports. 

Thanks to over 50 sponsors/supporters, the Salina Crossroads Marathon is one of the most affordable races in Kansas and raised $28,212 for the Salina Burn Track and Field Club, Salina Family YMCA, Kansas Youth Sports, SAYSI, and School Marathon Foundation in 2024. In addition to the marathon, Salina Crossroads has a 5K, 10K (new for 2025), half marathon, team relay events, and a half-mile kid’s fun run. Salina Crossroads Marathon announced for Nov. 8th, registration open and volunteers needed

A witness report of a man acting&nbsp;suspiciously when entering a vehicle, results in arrest.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Saturday, October 4 at around 8:00 pm, a witness reported of a man acting suspiciously as he was getting into a white 2005 Honda CRV in the 100 block of S. 5th.

After the report, an officer in the area located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was identified as 27-year old, Buddy Redding and he was arrested without incident.

SPD contacted the owner of the vehicle (64-year old female) and she stated that Redding was not supposed to be operating it.

The victim stated the key fob was accidentally left inside the vehicle before it was stolen.

Redding was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of Attempted Theft, Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia.

SPD added the Camaro possibly had an unknown dealer tag. Loss of value is $44,900.

Saline County Sheriff's Office Most Wanted — October 2025

DOWNS - The Kansas Storytelling Festival is set to host a Tall Tales contest in Downs, which is known as the "Storytelling Capital of Kansas."

This storytelling event begins at 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 11, at the Zion Lutheran Church (1019 Blunt St.).&nbsp;Everyone is welcome to attend this free storytelling event and hear some outrageous and semi-true whoppers. The audience will help select the winner by voting for their favorite story told throughout the night.

If you’ve ever thought about telling a Tall Tale in public, there’s still time to enter. This Tall Tales contest is open for anyone interested in being one of the 4 finalists who will perform at the 2026 Kansas Storytelling Festival, April 24-25, 2026 in Downs. This is the 3rd&nbsp;and final qualifying contest this year. The first qualifier was held in Tonganoxie, KS where Larry Brown (Columbia, MO) became the first finalist. Matthew Kitchen (Derby, KS) won the second qualifying contest in Wichita, KS. The last two finalists will be selected on Saturday.

A tall tale is a unique form of American storytelling, which the narrator usually has a part in the story. Telling a Tall Tale uses exaggerated detail describing things larger than they really are.&nbsp; A tall tale is a story based on a fact, or facts, and filled with unbelievable elements told as if they were true and factual. A tall tale has just enough truth to make a good story and to incite the imagination. 

Professional storytellers can not compete.

Three day weather forecast Salina, October 6 - October 8

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on child sex crime allegations.

On Sunday, deputies with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Matthew Jordan Schaecher, 29, of Herington, Kansas on a warrant for Internet trading in child pornography, aggravated Internet trading in child pornography, and sexual exploitation of a child.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office began the investigation after receiving tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. 

During the investigation, a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 800 Block of W Day Street, Herington, Kansas on Sunday. The Herington Police Department assisted in the execution of the search warrant at the residence. Additional search warrants were executed and the warrant was then issued for his arrest. Schaecher was booked into the Dickinson County Detention Facility.

Kansas students and adults considering college will soon have a special opportunity to apply for free to dozens of institutions across the state.

Kansas Apply Free Days will be held October 6–8, 2025, giving all Kansas residents—regardless of age or income—the chance to apply at no cost to any of the state’s 7 public universities, 19 community colleges, 6 technical colleges, and 21 private institutions that are members of the Kansas Independent College Association.

During these three days, eligible applicants can submit free applications for certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree programs. Graduate or mid-degree program applications are not included.

Students are encouraged to prepare their applications in advance, but they must wait until Monday, October 6 to submit in order to qualify for the waived fees. Only applications submitted between October 6 and 8 will be free. Any sent before or after that window will not be eligible for refunds.

Applicants using the Common Application should contact the admissions office of their chosen schools or review the official Apply Free Days Application Instructions for details.

All Kansas residents applying to undergraduate programs are eligible, including: •&nbsp;&nbsp;First-time freshmen •&nbsp;&nbsp;Transfer students •&nbsp; Returning students •&nbsp;&nbsp;Students seeking a second bachelor’s degree

Applicants for graduate programs are not eligible.

Some institutions—including Pittsburg State University, Washburn University, and Emporia State University—and all Kansas community colleges already offer free applications year-round.

State officials say the program aims to reverse a decade-long decline in college attendance. In 2021, only 59.5% of Kansas high school graduates pursued higher education, and fewer than half completed a FAFSA—a key indicator of college enrollment.

By removing application fees, organizers hope to make higher education more accessible and encourage Kansans to pursue the degrees or technical training needed to thrive in today’s workforce.

Kansas apply free days begin today

The City of Salina and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are scheduled to hold a public meeting on the Old Smoky Hill River Channel Restoration Project.

According to the City, on Tuesday, October 7 from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm at the Chamber Annex (218 N. 7th St.) will be the location of the meeting.

The City and USACE has completed its draft feasibility report on the Smoky Hill Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Project, which is part of the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project.

The draft report concludes that the restoration project would not result in significant degradation to the environment.  The project will be overseen by USACE and includes dredging of built-up silt from the Old River Channel, reconstruction of the channel to include riffles, pools, runs and glides, construction of wetlands around Lakewood Lake and connecting the lake to the Old River Channel, trail improvements at Lakewood Lake, removal of the Western Star Mill weir and replacement with five step pools, and other improvements.

Public input will be received and are welcomed.
