Salina Public Schools Salina Public Schools’ (SPS) Superintendent Linn Exline has announced she is retiring at the end of the 2024-25 school year. At its regular meeting on December 10, the board of education accepted her resignation and began to discuss how they will move forward with filling the superintendent position.

“On behalf of the Board of Education and as a former student, I thank Mrs. Exline for her dedicated service to Salina Public Schools and her community,” said Gabe Grant, board president. “In each post she has held in the district, it has been clear that Linn’s goal is to make Salina Public Schools the best place to learn and work. From leading a community-wide effort crafting a new, cohesive vision and mission at the start of her superintendency to introducing initiatives to increase student success and supporting teachers in the classroom, Mrs. Exline leaves us on a path of continuous improvement as we look to the future and begin the search for a new leader. I am so excited for Linn and her family as they embark on a new chapter of life.”

Exline was raised in Salina, graduated from SPS and committed her entire 33-year career in education to USD 305. Her leadership reached beyond managing the internal workings of the school district; she aligned the district with community expectations, always with a clear focus on what is best for the students. During 15 Strategic Plan Listening Sessions, she collected more than 3,000 comments from community members, staff and students. These insights formed the foundation for a new vision, mission statement, and strategic goals adopted by the SPS Board of Education in 2020.&nbsp;

After the listening sessions ended, Exline continued the face-to-face conversations through SPS Coffee Chats with staff, students and community members.&nbsp;

Under her leadership, the district received a Gold Medallion award in 2023 and a Golden Achievement award in 2024 from the National School Public Relations Association. Exline is on the Saline County Health Advisory Council, is a board member of the Kansas/Missouri Superintendent Forum and is a member of the Kansas Commissioner of Education’s Superintendent Advisory Council. She delivered multiple community and state-level presentations and participated in Leadership for Tomorrow (2022-23) and Business Operations Leadership Development (2021-22) programs. Over the last two years she has collaborated with a small group of Kansas superintendents to lead a statewide Did You Know campaign to raise awareness about public schools in Kansas. The lawsuit filed against the federal government for remediation of contaminants left behind from Schilling Air Force Base was resolved during Exline’s tenure as superintendent.

She received the Kansas Thespians Conference Administrators Award in 2013, was recognized for her educational leadership by the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals Area III in 2012 and was selected as USD 305 Elementary Teacher of the Year in 1995. Her career with USD 305 included roles as executive director of school improvement (teaching and learning), high school principal, director of staff development and accreditation, elementary principal, math and science K-12 curriculum specialist and elementary teacher.

Despite the increasing complexities of a school superintendent's role, Exline's decisions have always been guided by one principle - what is in the best interest of the students. Her vision and leadership have established positive momentum in the district that will ensure its continued success in years to come.

“As the Board of Education maps out the search process for our next Superintendent, the Board and Mrs. Exline will continue our focus on our respective roles in leading the district,” said Grant. “What our faculty and staff do every school day in every classroom in Salina Public Schools has incredible energy behind it. I speak for my fellow board members when I say we look forward to naming our new leader and not missing a beat in our work, making our community’s vision for Salina Public Schools being the best place to learn and work a reality.”

Starting Tuesday, Dec. 10, through Friday, Dec. 13, South Central Sealing of Wichita, Kansas, will conduct concrete curb and gutter (C&amp;G) repairs on Broadway Boulevard from Cloud Street to Hageman Avenue, weather permitting.

The project involves removing and replacing the existing curb and gutter infrastructure with new installations set at updated elevations along the roadway.

Work will be carried out with minimal lane closures, and safety barriers will be in place throughout the project. Motorists should expect slight delays and are encouraged to avoid the work zones when possible.

The project is part of the City of Salina's 2024 Minor Concrete – Curb and Gutter Repair annual maintenance program, with a total project cost of $89,400.

"Amazed" was the Academy of Country Music's Single and Song of the Year in 1999, and Lonestar was the Top Vocal Group for the ACM and the Country Music Association in 2001. 

During periods of downtime over the years, and THE FRONTMEN organically built a concept they've been working toward for more than a decade. McDonald and Stewart first connected when they played a radio show in Louisiana. McDonald broached the idea with Stewart: three lead singers, one band and nothing but hits. Rushlow joined soon after, and the trio went on an extended international tour of military bases. The soldiers’ reaction affirmed what they already thought – people want to hear their songs.” It's these iconic songs that have been a part of people's lives over the past 20 or 30 years, and we saw the effect that it had on these men and women fighting for our freedom," McDonald said. "We knew we had to do it.”

THE FRONTMEN played sporadic shows together over the years while each continued with their various bands. When the pandemic struck, McDonald reevaluated how he wanted to spend his time. Saline County Board of Commissioners Dec. 10 regular meeting agenda

As seed catalogs start to fill my mailbox, I’m reminded of the stash of leftover garden seeds I’ve saved from past seasons. Like many gardeners, I wonder:&nbsp;Should I plant these older seeds or invest in fresh ones for the upcoming growing season?&nbsp;The answer depends on two key factors: how the seeds have been stored and whether they are still viable.

Seed longevity depends heavily on storage conditions. It is best to place packets of seed in an airtight container for better protection. Always keep seed containers labeled with the date of storage for future reference.

The three biggest enemies of seed viability are moisture (humidity), heat, and light.&nbsp; To maximize seed longevity, seeds should be stored in a cool, dry location-ideally below 50 degrees and with less than 60% humidity.&nbsp; A refrigerator is an excellent option as long as seeds are kept in a tightly sealed and airtight container to protect against moisture.&nbsp; Purchased seed can also be stored in an airtight container in the freezer to extend its viability even longer.

If cold storage isn’t an option, the next best thing is to find a place in the home with a consistent temperature such as a shelf in the basement, an interior closet, or under a bed (away from air vents).

If your seed is more than a year or two old or storage conditions haven’t been ideal and you also have plenty of leftover seed, testing seed viability before planting is a wise step.&nbsp; Here’s how to test seed viability:

Like many gardeners, I wonder:&nbsp;Should I plant these older seeds or invest in fresh ones for the upcoming growing season?&nbsp;The answer depends on two key factors: how the seeds have been stored and whether they are still viable.<h2>Seed storage</h2>Seed longevity depends heavily on storage conditions. It is best to place packets of seed in an airtight container for better protection. Always keep seed containers labeled with the date of storage for future reference.The three biggest enemies of seed viability are moisture (humidity), heat, and light.&nbsp; To maximize seed longevity, seeds should be stored in a cool, dry location-ideally below 50 degrees and with less than 60% humidity.&nbsp; A refrigerator is an excellent option as long as seeds are kept in a tightly sealed and airtight container to protect against moisture.&nbsp; Purchased seed can also be stored in an airtight container in the freezer to extend its viability even longer.If cold storage isn’t an option, the next best thing is to find a place in the home with a consistent temperature such as a shelf in the basement, an interior closet, or under a bed (away from air vents).<h2>Testing seed viability</h2>If your seed is more than a year or two old or storage conditions haven’t been ideal and you also have plenty of leftover seed, testing seed viability before planting is a wise step.&nbsp; Here’s how to test seed viability:Take 10 seeds from your leftover packet. The VA is launching a new outreach campaign to encourage all eligible Veterans to enroll in VA health care – including approximately 13,900 unenrolled Kansas Veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. This campaign will include text messages and emails directly to Veterans, public service announcements, paid advertising, and events.

<a>VA is launching this campaign after reports of concerns from Veterans about health issues – including mental health challenges and thoughts of suicide – potentially related to repeated blasts and head trauma (low-level artillery blasts, IEDs, missile launches, heavy fire, and more).</a>&nbsp;Since the first reporting about these concerns, VA researchers have been urgently studying this matter to learn more about the potential health impacts of blast exposure on Veterans.&nbsp;

Veterans enrolled in VA can access specialty screenings and services to address any health issues related to blast exposure.&nbsp;Importantly, Veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and other specific locations are eligible for VA health care based on their deployments — they do not need to have any health conditions specifically associated with their service in order to be eligible for care.

While we continue to urgently conduct research into the impacts of blast exposure, VA and the entire Biden-Harris Administration encourage these Veterans – and all eligible Veterans – to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/health-care/how-to-apply/">apply for VA care today</a>. Veterans who use VA health care have better health outcomes than non-enrolled Veterans, VA hospitals are&nbsp;<a href="https://news.va.gov/press-room/va-health-care-outperforms-non-va-care-in-two-independent-nationwide-quality-and-patient-satisfaction-reviews/">dramatically outperforming non-VA hospitals,</a>&nbsp;and VA health care is often&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/health-care/copay-rates/">more affordable</a>&nbsp;than non-VA health care for Veterans. Additionally, 92% of&nbsp;Veteran patients currently report trusting VA outpatient health care – an all-time high.&nbsp;

“We take Veteran concerns about repeated blast exposure very seriously, and we are studying this matter urgently to learn more about potential health impacts,” said&nbsp;VA Secretary Denis McDonough.&nbsp;“While we do that, we don’t want Veterans to wait – they should enroll in VA health care today to get full access to primary care, mental health care, regular screenings, specialty care, and more. That’s what this outreach effort is all about: getting Veterans in our care, because Veterans who come to VA are proven to do better.”

“VA aims to be the best, most accessible, and most affordable health system in America for Veterans, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve that care as science and research tells us about new concerns,” said&nbsp;VA&nbsp;Under Secretary for Health Shereef Elnahal, M.D.&nbsp;“The more Veterans who enroll, the more we can learn about the impact of blast exposure – and the better care we can ultimately provide those who served.”

Earlier this year, VA made&nbsp;<a href="https://news.va.gov/press-room/veteran-toxins-hazards-serving-eligible-va/">all Veterans who were exposed to toxins and other hazards (and meet basic requirements) eligible to enroll directly in VA health care</a>&nbsp;– years earlier than called for by the PACT Act. This included all Veterans who served in the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Global War on Terror, or any other combat zone after 9/11. Veterans who never deployed but were exposed to toxins or hazards while training or on active duty in the United States are also eligible to enroll. Additionally, Veterans who do not meet any of the above criteria can often still access VA health care by receiving VA disability benefits or based on income.

This new outreach effort is a part of the largest outreach campaign in VA history, which began when President Biden signed the PACT Act into law in 2022 and continues to this day. As a result of this campaign, more than 835,000 Veterans have enrolled in VA health care (a 37% increase over the previous period); more than 900,000 Veterans have upgraded their priority groups, making them eligible for health care with fewer copays (an all-time record); and more than 4.4 million Veterans and survivors have applied for disability compensation benefits (another all-time record). 

The campaign has been focused on bringing new Veterans to VA by sending millions of texts and emails, hosting thousands of events nationwide, launching new paid advertising campaigns, working with influencers and companies, and more.

VA launches new outreach campaign to enroll Kansas Veterans in health care

TOPEKA — U.S. Rep. Ron Estes and U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, both Kansas Republicans, will join the caucuses supporting President-elect Donald Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency.

Estes, who represents Kansas’ south-central 4th District, is set to be a member of the House Delivering Outstanding Government Efficiency, or DOGE, caucus, which has been envisioned as a vehicle for lawmakers to pitch budget cuts.

“DOGE will be another helpful tool to identify waste, fraud and abuse and rein in wasteful spending, ensuring the government serves as a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars,” Estes said in a Sunday newsletter.

Marshall is set to join the Senate DOGE caucus, chaired by Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, who has already&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/iowa-senator-pitches-elon-musk-1-trillion-federal-spending-cuts" target="_blank">pitched $1 trillion</a>&nbsp;in spending cuts to the Trump team.

“Enough is enough,” Marshall said in a Friday newsletter. “It’s past time for three letter agencies and unelected D.C. bureaucrats to come down to reality and remember ‘We the People’ sign their checks.”

Republicans from Florida and Texas launched the House DOGE caucus Nov. 19, selecting more than 30 members. Ernst followed with a seven-member Senate caucus.

Estes said he met last week with tech billionaire Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to “brainstorm priorities.” Musk and Ramaswamy were Trump’s handpicked allies selected to lead the new department, which doesn’t technically exist without an act of Congress.

“It’ll take hard work,” Estes said, “but I am excited about the prospects of what DOGE can achieve to make government work for the people again.”

Estes called the federal government’s more than $36 trillion debt total “shameful and simply unsustainable.” He said he was glad to join the caucus to participate in addressing bureaucracy, excess regulations, wasteful spending and restructuring of federal agencies.

Peeling back regulations was of particular interest, Estes said. He blamed President Joe Biden’s administration for costly rulemaking and lauded the first Trump administration for cutting old regulations as new ones were added.

Evergy As winter approaches and cold nights set in, many Evergy customers will turn to portable space heaters and electric blankets to stay warm. However, improper use of these devices can pose serious fire hazards. The Electrical Safety Foundation reports that heating equipment causes more than 65,000 home fires each year.

Evergy is reminding customers how to use electric blankets and space heaters safely this winter.

When using space heaters, always review and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet—never into a power strip or extension cord. Place heaters on flat surfaces like the floor and avoid putting them anywhere they could fall. Keep heaters at least three feet away from flammable items such as blankets or curtains. Make sure the heater has proper certifications, such as UL approval, indicating it has been tested for safety standards. Consider choosing a space heater with a timer and avoid using one while sleeping. Select a heater that is appropriately sized for the room to avoid wasting energy or causing overheating.

For electric blankets, inspect them regularly for dark, charred, or frayed spots and discard any with damaged cords. Do not place anything on top of a heating pad or electric blanket while in use, including other blankets or pets, as this can cause overheating. CLAY COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Sunday in Clay County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Chevy Malibu driven by&nbsp; Deanna L.&nbsp; Hess, 56, Clay Center, was southbound on Kansas 15 just south of 2nd Road.

The Malibu crossed the center line and struck the driver's side of a 2016 Chevy Impala driven by&nbsp; Lisa L. Stevenson, 53, Salina.&nbsp;

Hess and Stevenson were pronounced dead at the scene and were transported to Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.&nbsp; EMS transported a passenger in the Impala identified as 13-year-old Ravean&nbsp;Stevenson to Salina Regional Health Center. The teen was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann believes the long term farm bill is going to get delayed again.

"That's what it's looking like," Mann said. "I'll tell you, I could not be more disappointed or frustrated. I've been to the floor of the House over 30 times urging other members of Congress to get serious about getting a five year Farm Bill done to lock in certainty for our producers. It looks like this is being made to punt yet again. Very frustrating. Not what I want."

The continuing resolution on discretionary spending needs to be dealt with in the next couple of weeks, but the farm bill will not be a part of that work.

"President Trump and his team are involved in the conversation because they're going to be impacted by however long this gets pushed into next year," Mann said. "It looks like the consensus or their desire is end of March, but we will see, those conversations are ongoing. Then really, you know, the question becomes, what is the plan for President Trump's first 100 days? What order does he want to tackle the many, many things to do to get this country back on track? How does government funding fit into that? All those things we'll take into consideration."

With Republican control of both houses and the presidency in January, there should be a change in emphasis next year.

"The election had consequences," Mann said. "The American people loud and clear, they said they want Donald Trump to be the President of the United States, and they are tired of business as usual in Washington. We need to get the train back on the track, so to speak. Republicans flipped the Senate. So 100 senators, that's a 53-47 vote margin in the House. Similar margins we've had, but with three folks from the House that have joined the administration, we'll have a one vote margin, looks like the first 100 days or so of the Congress."

It is important though, that both Ag committees will have Republicans with the gavel as a long term farm bill is worked out.

Walsh, 65, Salina, was southbound on Interstate 135 on mile north of the Crawford Exit. The pickup traveled off the road to the right into the ditch and struck the KDOT fence.EMS transported Walsh to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
