The Salina Area United Way is thrilled to announce the resounding success of its fourth annual Christmas event, Mistletoe Melodies Featuring HiFi Dueling Pianos, held on Friday, December 6, at Tumblweed LLC. 

With more than 400 attendees, the enchanting evening brought together music, laughter, and holiday cheer in support of the Salina Area United Way's 2024-2025 Campaign. The event raised an incredible $70,000 to benefit the Salina community.

Guests enjoyed a festive atmosphere filled with the sounds of HiFi Dueling Pianos and a special dinner performance by the local band, Everyday Lights. A delicious dinner and dessert catered by YaYa’s added to the night’s charm, along with engaging activities including photo opportunities with Salina Selfie Station, silent and live auctions, a 50-50 raffle, wine and whiskey pulls, and more.

 This year’s event raised significant funds that will directly support the Salina Area United Way’s programs, their 13 Funded Partners and seven Childcare Partners, strengthening programs that make a lasting impact in our community.

SAUW Mistletoe Melodies raises $70K to benefit Salina area community

Kansas State University will see more than 1,200 candidates for graduation this fall at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/">commencement&nbsp;ceremonies</a>&nbsp;set for Friday, Dec. 13, in Manhattan and Salina and Saturday, Dec. 14, in Manhattan.

Candidates from both the summer 2024 and fall 2024 semesters will be recognized. Ceremony information, including parking, accommodations will be available on the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/">K-State graduation website.</a>

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/"></a>Approximately 880 bachelor's degrees, 250 master's degrees and 80 doctorates will be awarded this fall. More than 50 students will be earning multiple degrees. The graduates-to-be also include nearly 280 students who are earning their degrees through a K-State Online program.

The following is the schedule and speakers for ceremonies on Dec. 13:

• Graduate School, 1 p.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Regent Neelima Parasker will represent the Kansas Board of Regents at the ceremony. Garry Myers, director of the Australian Institute for Microbiology &amp; Infection at the University of Technology Sydney, will be the speaker.

• K-State Salina, 7 p.m., Student Life Center, Salina. Retired Col. William Clark, president and CEO of Saint Francis Ministries, will be the speaker. Clark served in the United States Army for 30 years and has led Saint Francis Ministries since November 2020.

• College of Business Administration, 11:30 a.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Julie Bryant, retired manager of accounting operations for Phillips 66, will be the speaker. Bryant is a member of K-State College of Business Administration advisory councils for business and accounting.

• College of Agriculture, 1 p.m., Bramlage Coliseum. Cassie Jones, professor and teaching coordinator in K-State's animal sciences and industry department, will be the speaker. The Saline County Board of Commissioners has officially adopted its 2025 meeting schedule through <a href="https://pub-salinecounty.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=8661">Resolution 24-2414</a>. This resolution outlines regular meetings, work planning sessions, and study sessions aimed at ensuring transparent and consistent governance.

The Board will convene for regular meetings at 9 a.m. on select Tuesdays throughout the year, with key dates including January 7, February 4, March 4, and December 30. Work planning sessions will also be held at 8:30 a.m. before certain meetings, including February 4, April 1, and October 7. The Commission will also conduct study sessions on specific dates, such as January 28, March 18, and December 23.

Notably, the Board has scheduled breaks from meetings on several Tuesdays, including April 15, June 24, and November 11, due to holidays and key conferences. These dates are subject to change only if emergency sessions are required.

Saline County Board of Commissioners set 2025 meeting schedule

The holiday season is full of cheer, but it can also bring hidden dangers for our beloved pets. From festive foods to holiday decorations, there's plenty to watch out for.

Susan Nelson, clinical professor at Kansas State University's Veterinary Health Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has some tips to keep pets safe.

"Many animal-related emergency room visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given or by accident," Nelson said. "Some foods cause upset stomachs, some are poisonous and some can cause life-threatening obstructions."

Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis. Ham, gravy, butter-laden potatoes and buttered veggies should be kept out of reach from pets. Skin and dark meat from turkey and fat trimmings from meat can be harmful to animals.

"Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforation of the GI tract," Nelson said. "Especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to GI obstruction. Tooth breakage from chewing on them is possible as well."

Pet owners should exercise caution when it comes to certain foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. Items to avoid include chocolate, coffee and caffeinated drinks, as well as raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks and foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder. Additionally, citrus plant stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, along with dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages, can pose serious health risks.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are secured can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and are tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to GI obstruction and/or perforations."

Food is not the only thing that could be harmful to pets this holiday season.

"Ingestion of holiday plants can cause anywhere from minor GI irritation to life-threatening toxicity," Nelson said. "Plants to keep out of reach include mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar. Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to our pets. The ASPCA contains lists of more plants that are toxic, or not, to dogs and cats."

While certain holiday plants can cause varying levels of toxicity, the decorations and wrapping materials that fill our homes can also pose significant dangers if pets try to eat them.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, with many decorations and wrapping items having the potential to cause harm if ingested," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

Holiday festivities might be fun for us but can be stressful for pets.

"Pets that are anxious around strangers or crowds should be kept in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite treat or toy," Nelson said. "Even if your pet likes company, they should still have access to a room or crate located in a quiet place where your guests won't bother them. For pets that become particularly stressed by company, speak to your veterinarian about prescribing them anxiolytics to decrease their anxiety until your company has left."

It is important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip, in case they should slip through the door and run away as guests enter and leave. Make sure microchips have the most up-to-date contact information.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, immediately call your veterinarian, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 for advice.

K-State vet offers holiday pet safety tips

Cloud, Salina, KS. The suspect told the female clerk he needed the money from the register, and she told him no. The suspect grabbed the register, and the clerk attempted to stop the suspect from taking it but was unsuccessful. The suspect fled from the store, with the register, and ran to the north. The subject wore a mask and gloves.

Salina Mayor’s Christmas Pancakes & Pajama Party set for Friday

The sounds of big brass instruments will once again ring out at the Salina Central Mall as the 12th annual Salina TubaChristmas concert returns on Dec. 14, 2024. This free event will feature tubas and euphoniums performing holiday favorites in rich, four-part harmony.

The concert begins at 12:30 p.m. in the mall’s food court, featuring a community brass ensemble led by retired KWU music instructor Steven Leuth. The event brings together brass musicians from across central Kansas and beyond, including high school students, college musicians, and experienced adult players.

Salina’s TubaChristmas is part of a long-standing national tradition founded more than 50 years ago by professional tuba player Harvey Phillips and his instructor, William J. Bell, from Indiana University.

The first TUBACHRISTMAS® was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS® was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980.

“We’ve held it for 12 years here in Salina,” said retired Salina Symphony tuba player and event organizer Ron McWilliams. “Last year, we had 32 tubas and euphoniums playing and we’re excited to do it again.”

When asked, "Why tubas and not clarinets or saxaphones?" McWilliams said it's thanks to the rich, resonant tones of tubas and euphoniums&nbsp;

“It’s a deep, mellow sound, kind of like a men’s quartet,” McWilliams said. “When you’re in a big place like the food court, it feels like you’re sitting in the middle of a church organ.”

McWilliams said part of the fun with TubaChristmas is getting to make music with longtime friends like Leuth.

"Steven is a well-known entertainer. He plays with the group The Blades. He's taught at KWU and Bennington. He's our director and has been a friend of mine for 50-plus years," McWilliams said. "We met at college at Fort Hays State University."

TubaChristmas is a nationwide event, and with Salina positioned at the "Crossroads of America," McWilliams said tuba and euphonium players from across the state are coming to town.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Last year we had someone from Oklahoma City. We have had tuba players from south of Wichita come up on a regular basis," McWilliams said. "We have also had several players from Concordia and players from all over central Kansas come into this and look forward to it."

High school and adult tuba and euphonium players are encouraged to participate. Registration is $10, with music books available for $15. The event brings together brass musicians from across central Kansas and beyond, including high school students, college musicians, and experienced adult players.<h2>A Tradition of Holiday Music</h2>Salina’s TubaChristmas is part of a long-standing national tradition founded more than 50 years ago by professional tuba player Harvey Phillips and his instructor, William J. Bell, from Indiana University.The first TUBACHRISTMAS® was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS® was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980.“We’ve held it for 12 years here in Salina,” said retired Salina Symphony tuba player and event organizer Ron McWilliams. “Last year, we had 32 tubas and euphoniums playing and we’re excited to do it again.”When asked, "Why tubas and not clarinets or saxaphones?" NWS weekend weather forecast

Survey participants had the opportunity to provide feedback about district services, identify strengths and areas for improvement, share concerns and more. The community survey helped the district better understand community members’ perceptions of SPS.

“Salina&nbsp;Public&nbsp;Schools&nbsp;is a vital part of our community,” said Linn Exline, superintendent. “We use the community feedback to keep our district closely aligned with the expectations and values of those we serve.”

The results were shared at the December 10 Board of Education meeting. Jennifer Camien, SPS communications director, told board members that the Salina community regards SPS as an exemplary student resource and a source of pride for patrons.

Scoring highest on a grading scale were:

⦁ Quality of school facilities ⦁ Safety of students ⦁ Preparation of students for college, career/technical training or employment ⦁ Performance of teachers ⦁ District’s efforts to communicate with patrons

Additionally, a good curriculum and teachers topped the list of strengths based on an open-ended question

. “We are proud of our teachers’ dedication and commitment to our students,” said Exline. “Their work drives academic growth and creates a supportive environment where every student can thrive.”

Another open-ended question asked what needs improvement and the top answers were spending/budget, don’t know and communications. The survey results help the district refine its strategies and communication plans to better serve SPS students, families and the broader community.

Survey respondents were asked what the district’s priority should be.

⦁ Providing a good education. ⦁ Teaching life/practice skills. ⦁ Providing a safe environment for all

The survey revealed awareness of student opportunities such as CTE, clubs, athletics, fine arts and more. There was also good awareness of the special programs offered in elementary schools, such as libraries run by library media specialists and certified art teachers who teach art, PE and music classes.

“Being the largest district in the area, we offer a vast range of opportunities for students – there is something for everyone at SPS,” said Exline. “Our elementary students have art, physical education, science/social studies and library each week. The special programs are layered into our elementary curriculum.”&nbsp;

Other results included participants’ view of SPS as a workplace. Eighty-one percent indicated it was an excellent or good place to work. When asked what participants would like to hear more about from the school, the top answers were:

⦁ Career and technical education. ⦁ School safety measures. ⦁ Preparation for college, career, military, etc.

Survey results are being incorporated into district plans. The school safety information campaign continues, with a new video update planned for early 2025. Work on postsecondary success continues with the implementation of Visible Learning, an approach in which students see themselves as active learners eager to explore and grow.&nbsp;

“We appreciate everyone who took the time to participate,” said Exline. “Our&nbsp;schools&nbsp;reflect the power of community partnerships here in&nbsp;Salina. Together, we make SPS a great place to learn and work.”

SPS survey identifies strengths, areas of improvement

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are actively investigating the theft of a 2020 Hyundai Elantra reported stolen from an apartment complex parking lot at 730 Fairdale Road in Salina. According to SPD Captain James Feldman, the theft occurred between 9:30 p.m. on December 10 and 6:46 a.m. on December 11.

The victim, a 55-year-old Salina woman, discovered her vehicle missing early Wednesday morning. The stolen car is described as a white 2020 Hyundai Elantra with Kansas license plate 5413 AGU. No keys were left in the vehicle; at this time, SPD has no identified suspects.

The missing Hyundai Elantra is valued at approximately $24,000. SPD encourages residents to report any suspicious activity or potential sightings of the vehicle.

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers and firefighters with Salina Fire responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Ninth Street and Magnolia Road at approximately 2:15 p.m. on December 10.

SPD Captain James Feldman said the crash involved a Toyota Camry traveling north on Ninth Street and a 2016 Nissan Rogue turning east onto Magnolia Road. The Toyota Camry had a green light, while the Nissan Rogue had a flashing yellow turn signal but failed to yield, resulting in a collision.

The Nissan Rogue rolled upon impact, and both vehicles were towed from the scene. The driver of the Rogue, identified as John Avalos, 24, of Salina, was cited for failure to yield. The driver of the Toyota Camry was transported to the hospital with neck pain, while Avalos later went to the hospital on his own for evaluation.

The northbound traffic lane was temporarily closed, and traffic was diverted east onto Magnolia during the emergency response.

Scammers love a good disguise. One day they show up texting you about a&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/sites/www.consumer.ftc.gov/files/fedex_phishing_text_social_media_graphic_01142021.png">delivery you missed</a>, the next they say you need to sort an&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/netflixscreenshot.jpg">issue with your Netflix account</a>. Here’s how to avoid these phishing scams.

<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams">Phishing emails and text messages</a>&nbsp;often tell a story to trick you into clicking on a link or opening an attachment. Maybe it’s an unexpected email or text message pretending to be from a company you know or trust, like a utility company asking you to make a payment. Or maybe it’s an unexpected party invitation that looks like it’s from a friend or family member.

Don’t click on links or download attachments in these messages. It might lead to a request for personal information, like your Social Security, credit card, or bank account number — and&nbsp;<a href="https://ftc.gov/idtheft">identity theft</a>. Or, the link or attachment could download harmful&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-remove-and-avoid-malware">malware</a>&nbsp;onto your device.

How can you spot these scams? If you get an email or text message that asks you to click on a link or open an attachment, ask yourself:&nbsp;Do I have an account with the company or know the person who contacted me?

If the answer is “No,”&nbsp;it’s likely a phishing scam. While real companies might communicate with you by email, legitimate companies won’t unexpectedly email or text with a link to update your payment or account information. If the answer is “Yes,”&nbsp;contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real —&nbsp;not&nbsp;the information in the email.&nbsp;Or contact your friend directly on a separate email or text string to confirm it’s really them. They’ll understand if you’re suspicious about that unexpected invitation to click a link.&nbsp;

Salina residents and those passing through town can enjoy a meal while giving back to the community on Thursday, December 12. Applebee’s locations, including the one in Salina, will donate 25% of proceeds from orders to The Salvation Army of Salina when customers mention the fundraiser or present the official flyer to their server.

The fundraiser will run all day, making breakfast, lunch, or dinner plans convenient. Proceeds from the event will help The Salvation Army continue supporting local families and individuals in need.
