HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bethany College has announced a groundbreaking 2+2 articulation agreement with Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) that will provide students with a seamless pathway to earn an Associate of Arts in Animation from HutchCC and transfer to Bethany College to complete a Bachelor of Arts in 3D Computer Animation. 

The formal signing of the agreement took place on December 11, 2024, at Hutchinson Community College, marking the&nbsp;beginning of an exciting collaboration between the two institutions.

“This partnership exemplifies our commitment to creating accessible, high-quality educational opportunities for students while supporting their professional aspirations in a rapidly growing industry,” said Interim Bethany College President&nbsp;Steve Eckman. “Together, Bethany and HutchCC are providing a unique pathway for students to combine the foundational expertise of HutchCC with the specialized, industry-connected program at Bethany.”

The 2+2 program allows students to complete the first two years of their education at HutchCC, earning an Associate of Arts in Animation. Students can then transfer to Bethany College for the remaining two years to pursue a Bachelor of Arts majoring in 3D Computer Animation. This program provides students with a cost-effective and structured way to prepare for exciting careers in digital arts, animation, and related fields.

“Our faculty have worked on such major films such as The Book of Life and on AAA game titles for Lost Boys Interactive, as well as many other award-winning short films bringing real-world expertise into the classroom,” said Sarah Mathia, Assistant Professor of Art and Director of Art and Digital Media at Bethany College.

“Through this partnership, students will gain access to cutting-edge labs, a dynamic curriculum, and mentorship from professional artists, positioning them for success in this highly competitive field.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that multimedia artists and animators will see a 5% growth in demand from 2023 to 2033, with median annual wages exceeding $78,000. This agreement equips students with the skills and credentials&nbsp;needed to excel in this growing field while offering a unique opportunity to study digital arts in rural Kansas.

Bethany College has a long tradition of providing students with an education combining faith, service, and academic excellence. Its digital arts program offers majors in 3D Computer Animation, Art Teaching (PreK-12), Pre-Professional Art Therapy, Studio Art, Studio Art: Graphic Design Focus, Video Game Design, and Visual Art Administration. Students at Bethany benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, a tight-knit community, and a focus on fostering creativity and innovation.

Bethany College Registrar Mark Bandré, who played a pivotal role in developing this agreement, expressed his excitement about its potential. “This collaboration has been years in the making, and it’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of so many individuals at both institutions,” Bandré said. “We look forward to seeing students thrive as they take advantage of this unique opportunity.”

HutchCC, Bethany coming together for future animators

This holiday season, all 342 angels from the <a href="https://centralusa.salvationarmy.org/salina/">Salina Salvation Army’s</a> Angel Tree program have been adopted, but some gifts still need to be returned.

The Angel Tree program supports area children aged 12 and under who might not otherwise experience the joy of Christmas. Each angel tag lists a child’s clothing and shoe sizes, helping donors choose personalized gifts to meet their needs this Christmas.&nbsp;

While most gifts have been returned, about 75 angels remain outstanding. Lt. Luke Hirsch of the Salina Salvation Army urges donors to return unwrapped gifts and their corresponding angel tags by the end of the day Wednesday. Gifts should be delivered to the Salvation Army North Santa Fe Avenue facility.

Salvation Army: Angel tree gifts need to be returned 

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers responded to an aggravated burglary in the 100 block of West Jewel Avenue on December 14.

According to SPD Captain James Feldman, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:53 a.m. Saturday after they received a report that several individuals had forced their way into a residence and stole a PlayStation 5 gaming console.

"A 25-year-old male who lives at the residence reported that he heard some banging on the front door, went to the check, looked through the peephole, and didn't observe anyone. He started to head back to a room when he heard banging again," Feldman said. "He went and opened the door, thinking someone needed help. Four individuals dressed in black shoved past him."

The console belonged to the resident’s 36-year-old roommate, who was not home then.

"He stated they were all short and had ski masks on their faces. When they started removing the PlayStation, he went into an adjacent room and grabbed a crowbar and went out back towards them. At that point, they fled the residence with the PS five and the attachments. The total loss was $755," Feldman said.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, Dec. 17

By SALINA POST One person was injured in a crash just before 1p.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Honda Accord driven by&nbsp; Matthew Wilson, 37, McPherson, was northbound in the&nbsp; 11000 block of Gypsum Valley Road.

The car traveled off the road to the left and into the ditch. The car continued in the ditch, hit a field entrance, went airborne and struck a power pole.

EMS transported Wilson to&nbsp;Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized in Salina after violent crash

An investigation involving irregularities in a few escrow accounts established directly with the Saline County Treasurer’s Office is currently under review by the Kansas Attorney General. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has conducted a detailed investigation of the matter, and the case is now under consideration for potential prosecution. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains active.

The investigation began in April 2022, following the discovery of discrepancies during routine operations. Since then, safeguards have been implemented within the Treasurer’s Office to prevent future incidents, and all affected accounts have been corrected to ensure that payments were properly credited. Saline County has also filed a claim with its insurance carrier and expects all funds to be recovered once the legal process concludes.

While the county understands the complexity of this case, frustration has grown over the time it has taken to move forward. In an effort to expedite progress, Saline County recently requested the Kansas Attorney General’s Office take on this case for review and potential prosecution. The Attorney General’s Office recently confirmed its acceptance of the case. Saline County appreciates their decision and is optimistic that this step will lead to a timely resolution.

Due to the circumstances in this case, Saline County has been unable to speak publicly and is limited in the information that can be shared due to legal and ethical obligations. 

While frustrating, these constraints ensure compliance with the Kansas Rules of Professional Conduct (KRPC), designed to preserve the integrity of the judicial process and protect the rights of all parties involved. 

"As a result, details about evidence, the accused, or opinions about the case cannot be disclosed at this time," a statement from Saline County reads.

Once the legal process is complete, Saline County is committed to sharing all information that can legally be disclosed with the public. As a reminder, individuals under investigation are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Saline County will continue fully supporting the investigative and judicial process while maintaining its commitment to transparency and accountability.

"Saline County sincerely thanks the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for its professionalism and dedication throughout this complex investigation," the statement continued.

Kansas Attorney General reviewing Saline County escrow account investigation

The Christmas spirit was alive and thriving this weekend as the 99 KG Shane McClintock TOYATHON returned to Salina with a mission: collecting 2,500 toys in 25 hours for local children and area agencies. Thanks to an incredible outpouring of community support, the 2024 TOYATHON was a resounding success, gathering 3,312 new, unwrapped toys.

The TOYATHON was held at Salina Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street, and ran continuously until noon on Sunday. The event kicked off at 11 a.m. on Saturday.&nbsp;

The countdown began shortly after McClintock and his team pitched a tent outside Walmart’s pharmacy entrance on Saturday morning. They camped out for 25 hours straight, collecting donations. Every toy received was loaded into a Doug Bradley Trucking semi-sleigh, ready for distribution.

The 25-hour countdown ended at noon on Sunday.

SPD Captains James Feldman, Mike Miller, David Villianueva, Officer Allyeson Arnold and Saline County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Little helped collect toys as part of the TOYATHON.&nbsp;

"It's always a fun time getting to interact with the community at events like this," said SPD Captain James Feldman. "It's nice for the residents to see law enforcement in a different light. Many shoppers stopped and spoke with us and thanked us for being there."

Partner agencies such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, CAPS, Salvation Army, Ashby House, DVAC, and others received the toys earlier today.&nbsp;

"It is a blessing for all of the families that we serve. There are a lot of families that are struggling this year with everything going on, and to be able just to come to a safe space and pick out gifts for kids and to know that they're going to get something to open for Christmas is it's just priceless," said Salina Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Amanda Otto. "We're very blessed to partner with not only Shane but also 99KG. It [99KG] serves as a conduit to the community for all of these wonderful things that I think many of us take for granted this time of year."&nbsp;

Two drivers were transported to Salina Regional Health Center with injuries following a head-on collision Saturday near the intersection of Old Highway 81 and Mentor Road in Saline County.&nbsp;

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, the crash occurred around 5:49 p.m. when a black 2012 Lincoln four-door sedan driven by 42-year-old Nichole Yohe of Assaria was traveling southbound on Old Highway 81. Yohe attempted to turn left to head eastbound on Mentor Road but turned into the path of a northbound white 2014 Subaru Tribeca SUV driven by a 72-year-old from Salina.

The vehicles collided nearly head-on due to the Lincoln's turn. Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to Salina Regional Health Center by Salina EMS.

Sheriff Soldan noted that the speed limit in the area is 55 mph and that the intersection has been the site of numerous vehicle crashes despite having no visibility obstructions. 

"There’s something about that intersection... we work a lot of accidents there," Soldan said.

Soldan said Yohe was cited for failing to yield when turning left.

The Public Works Department staff will continue curbside leaf collection from December 16 to January 31, weather permitting. The participant guidelines below will help staff collect all the leaves set out by the public this season.

Rake and pile leaves between the curb and sidewalk. If no sidewalk exists, the pile leaves directly behind the curb. Staff will not pick up bags or collect leaves in the alleys, on private streets, or on commercial properties.

Leaf piles will not be collected if mixed with other debris. Tree limbs and branches will not be collected.

Don’t rake or blow leaves into the street as this can be a traffic hazard and is a violation of City Code. Additionally, placing leaves in the street may cause problems for our storm drainage systems.

Don’t park vehicles directly in front of or behind leaf piles, making collection more difficult for our crew.

Have your leaves ready for collection on the first day of the schedule for your respective zone.

There will only be one round of curbside leaf collection in each zone; however, customers may call in to report locations if they feel the leaf collection crew may have missed them or when weather conditions or late leaf deposits require additional collection.

City of Salina reminds residents of leaf collection guidelines

A rollover accident occurred Saturday morning around 8:10 a.m. on Country Club Road, approximately a quarter mile east of Simpson Road in Saline County. 

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, a red 2005 Ford Freestyle SUV was traveling westbound when the driver swerved to avoid an animal on the road. The vehicle crossed the roadway, struck a culvert, rolled over, and came to rest against a fence on the south side of the road.

The driver, identified as a 59-year-old of Enterprise, had no passengers in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash. The victim was transported by Salina EMS to Salina Regional Health Center for evaluation. While she reported shoulder pain, there were no serious injures.&nbsp;

Saline County single-vehicle crash sends driver to SRHC

The Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill will initiate a controlled burn in the limb dump area on Monday, December 16, at 9:30 a.m. Please be advised that there is a potential for smoke and low visibility near the area.

Limbs will be accepted at an alternate location within the Landfill’s facility.

Burning is estimated to be completed by the end of the day, Tuesday, December 17.

I have a very tattered and worn Christmas stocking that is nearly 50 years old. To look at it, it's nothing fancy: it is red and made of thin felt. You can't even hang it up anymore because the loop used to hang it broke many years ago. But this stocking is mine and it is very special to me. What makes it special is the joy I see on my mom’s face when she presents it to me each year, and the childlike wonder it brings as we share time together.

 These emotions have nothing to do with the content of the stocking. Just as my stocking holds memories and love, family traditions can create similar lasting connections. Simple traditions and objects like my Christmas stocking can hold profound meaning, rooted in emotional connection, nostalgia, and shared family rituals. These moments and items are powerful tools in strengthening family bonds, building identity and fostering joy that transcends material aspects. Curious about building or strengthening family traditions in your home? Here are three ways to get you started.

1. Create Traditions with Special Objects

My Christmas stocking is a perfect example of how a simple object can become a cherished part of a family’s story. These items are more than just “things” - they carry the love, joy, and memories associated with family traditions. KWU Tickets are now on sale for one of Kansas Wesleyan’s premier yearly events, Night with the Yotes. The 2025 version of the event will be held&nbsp;Friday, Feb. 21, in Mabee Arena on campus.&nbsp;

“We can’t wait for Night with the Yotes,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Every year, it seems to get better and better. It’s not only a fun evening, it’s one of the best ways to support the activities that are such a critical part of our students’ college experiences. We hope every Coyote supporter will turn out to enjoy this event.”

Tickets for the annual fundraiser, which benefits all of KWU’s numerous activities, including music, athletics, theatre and DECA, cost $125 apiece. Sponsorships also are available, ranging from $1,500 to $2,500, and named tables are available for $1,000.&nbsp;

Last year’s Night with the Yotes saw a record $165,000 raised through sponsorships and auction sales. A record 60 tables were filled at the 2024 event.&nbsp;

Salina’s holiday season is getting a creative twist this year as the Center for Theatre Arts at Theatre Salina presents its first annual '12 Days of Christmas', featuring performances by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61568713568362">Iron Street Dance Company</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CenterForTheatreArts">Stage Door One Singers</a>. The event will be held on December 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The performances will spotlight some of Salina’s most talented young artists. Under the expert direction of Maggie Spicer Brown and Elizabeth-Ali Schade, the ensemble features performers who have collectively participated in more than 150 productions at Theatre Salina and area high schools.

Featuring beautiful dance pieces to songs like "Underneath the Tree" and "Carol of the Bells" as well as fun scenes that lead into musical performances of favorites like "Feliz Navidad" and "Swing into Christmas" and more.&nbsp;

And if you are looking for seasonal work, applications for paid Bellringer starting at $9.00 per hour, will be taken at the Salina Public Library from 10-12pm on Tuesday, October, 15 and Wednesday, October 16, 2024, in conference room 1.

Please bring current picture ID and Social Security card and any other documentation with you so we can get your applications processed at the same time.
