🎙King in the Community — Vickee Spicer, Prairieland Market

Parkinson's disease impacts millions of families each year, and to help fund research about and combat the condition, the local Punchin'Out Parkinson's organization planned its fifth Punchin' Out Parkinson's Cinco de Mayo fundraiser at LaCurva Mexican Restaurant in town.

"This is&nbsp;our fifth year of doing it, and we just had a good relationship with LaCurva," said Punchin' Out Parkinson's founder Kallie Burgardt. "So we asked them, and they agreed, so we just held it there&nbsp;every single&nbsp;year."

LaCurva will sell tacos by the dozen for $25 at the fundraiser, with the option of carryout or delivery. Punchin' Out Parkinson's also offers a pre-order option for donors.

"There's a lot of people who, rather than buying tacos, go to our website and donate or write a check," Burgardt said.&nbsp;

Burgardt founded the 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization in 2019 after the death of her grandfather, Gene Heckel, from Parkinson's.

Punchin' Out Parkinson's aims to&nbsp;not only&nbsp;fund research for fighting the disease&nbsp;but also&nbsp;improve the quality of life for those currently living with it.&nbsp;

The organization promotes and provides a non-contact boxing-based fitness curriculum that utilizes punching bags and intense exercise to help reduce, reverse and delay Parkinson's symptoms.

Punchin' Out Parkinson's annual Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser this Friday

On Wednesday, Abilene High School officially announced that former assistant Kyle Taylor would be elevated to head boys basketball coach for the 2024-25 season.

Taylor has served as assistant boys varsity coach for the last five years, after joining Abilene as head middle school&nbsp;boys coach in 2018.

Before his time with the Cowboys, Taylor spent seven seasons as head boys coach at Goddard High School, and worked as an assistant at Andover Central and Riley County prior to that.

“We are pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Kyle Taylor as our new head boys basketball coach," Abilene AD Will Burton said. "We are excited for the leadership he will provide for our players both on and off the court as well as his work with programs throughout our community.”

In addition to helping lead the Cowboys to three state runs in four years, Taylor also brings in college playing experience at Kansas State, Butler County CC, and Fort Scott CC.

The Augusta native also helped lead his Orioles to a 4A state title during his playing days back in 2002.

Taylor takes the reigns from Erik Graefe, who stepped down this offseason after leading the Cowboys for the last four seasons, and coaching in Abilene for the last 18.

Salina Tech students eligible for micro-internship program A new partnership between the Kansas Department of Commerce, the Kansas Board of Regents, the DeBruce Foundation and micro-internship firm Parker Dewey is aimed at helping college students gain real-world experience&nbsp;and&nbsp;get a foot in the door with potential future employers&nbsp;–&nbsp;and earn some cash.&nbsp;

"The micro-internships are for specific short-term projects or tasks an organization needs&nbsp;done," said Alisha Jester, Director of Business and Community Partnerships at Salina Tech. "Students in any of the college's programs are eligible, depending on the nature of the project. "It could be something like cleaning out and organizing a tool&nbsp;crib,&nbsp;or doing the marketing for an upcoming event," Jester said. "The Parker Dewey platform will help businesses find a student with the needed skills."

The program is open to students at any of the state's 32 public colleges and universities. "For the company, this is a low-stakes opportunity to try out a candidate and evaluate whether they're a good fit for each other," Jester said. "It's also a great option for smaller organizations that may need&nbsp;a little&nbsp;extra help but aren't ready to add a permanent position to the payroll."&nbsp;

For any given organization, the&nbsp;first two micro-internships are free; after that, businesses coordinate with Parker Dewey to set their project prices.

"For students, it's a way to gain experience they can put on their&nbsp;resumé,&nbsp;and make connections that can lead to a regular job," Jester said.&nbsp;

Hello and happy Wednesday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Last night, the cross-town rivalry between Salina South and Salina Central took place on both the diamonds, and it was a HUGE four-game sweep for the Cougars and Lady Cougars, who picked up wins of 9-6 and 7-0 on the softball diamond, and 11-4 and 17-1 on the baseball diamond.

All four games were streamed with live audio and video on Salina Post, and are now available for playback on-demand

Big news also broke out of Kansas Wesleyan on Tuesday when it was announced that head mens VB coach&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/5550cb47-03d8-4f6f-8898-612123b9ae83?elinkdata=9800" target="_blank">Dustin Sahlmann</a>&nbsp;was named as GPAC Coach-of-the-Year headlining KWU's 2024 list of All-GPAC selections

In just his second season, Sahlmann led the Coyotes to new program heights, finishing with their first winning season, their first home playoff game, and their first trip to the conferences final four.

And finally Following a successful 12-year NFL career that included four Pro Bowl appearances, All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl 50 title, Kansas Jayhawk Chris Harris Jr. announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday.

An undrafted free agent out of Kansas, Harris signed with the Denver Broncos in 2011 and spent his first nine seasons with the Broncos, which included four Pro Bowl appearances and the Super Bowl 50 title. Harris was named first-team All-Pro in 2016 and is a member of the 2010s NFL All-Decade team.

Between 3 and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, a 30-year-old Salina resident in the 2200 block of Wesley Street noticed her vehicle missing from the driveway of her home.

After phoning a few family members and friends to see if someone she knew had taken the vehicle, she found that an unknown suspect likely stole the white 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. James Feldman said the victim reported the stolen vehicle to SPD officers on Tuesday, April 30.

"Not&nbsp;sure how they got it because the victim had all their keys for the vehicle," said Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman.&nbsp;"The vehicle was valued at $25,000, and there were no other distinguishing marks or damage on&nbsp;the vehicle."

Feldman said the report stated that the victim had all her vehicle keys accounted for but did not state if the Tahoe was unlocked when the unknown suspect stole it.

SPD officers continue to investigate the case. There are no suspects at this time.

Salina resident reports vehicle stolen from driveway

The City of Salina’s 16th annual E-waste Recycling Event will be held at the Berkley Family Recreational Area, 841 Markley Rd. on Saturday May 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This year we are delighted to be joined by the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank to collect donations of non-perishables and personal hygiene goods.&nbsp;

E-waste is consumer electronic equipment that is obsolete and needs to be discarded properly. Computers, televisions, cameras, gaming systems, phones and microwaves are examples of E-waste. Recycling electronic equipment not only preserves resources like aluminum, copper, gold, silver and ferrous metals; it also diverts toxic materials like mercury, lead, and cadmium from the landfill. When electronic equipment is recycled, landfill space is also saved.&nbsp;

The event is open to Saline County residents, businesses, and organizations. Nearly any device with a cord or uses a battery will be accepted. However, there are some exceptions. Depending on the job, some people may have to complete a fitness test to prove that they can complete what will be required of them to be successful.

For bulls whose job it is to breed cows, the fitness test often comes in the form of a breeding soundness exam completed by a veterinarian in the weeks ahead of pasture turnout, say the experts at the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksre-learn.com/cattle-chat-bulls-fail-breeding-exam">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said there are several components to a breeding soundness exam.

“With that exam, we make sure the bull is in good body condition and that his feet and legs are sound. We also palpate the scrotum and observe his penis to be sure it moves freely. And then we test a semen sample to assess the quality of the sperm he is producing,” Larson said.

Relating to the semen sample, K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers explained what the base criteria are for the semen to pass.

“We want 70% of the bull’s sperm cells to be normal morphology and 30% of those cells to have a normal, forward-progressive motility,” Lubbers said.

These tests are typically done in the spring before the bulls are turned out into breeding pastures with the females.

Unfortunately, not all bulls pass their breeding soundness exam. That can happen for a variety of reasons, said the veterinarians.

So that begs the question: What should producers do with a bull who fails the exam?

“It really depends on the age of the bull and why he failed,” Lubbers said.

If the bull is around 12 months of age and he fails on semen quality, Larson recommends producers retest the bull in a few weeks.

“Because of the cattle breeds that we have in the U.S., I don’t expect all bulls will be fertile at 12 months of age, but by the time they are 15 months old, their age should not be a limiting factor,” Larson said.

Lubbers said there are some health challenges relating to a bull’s movement that can cause him to fail on exam day, but as he recovers that should not be a barrier to him passing a future evaluation.

“If he has a foot abscess, he will fail the exam but that is easy to treat and his prognosis of being able to return to breeding is good,” Lubbers said. “However, if he only has 20% normal sperm under the microscope, he may never pass. And that is why some fails are different than others.”

Saline County Jail Bookings, May 1

Hundreds of people from all over the state and beyond will explore Ellsworth and Lincoln counties plus the community of Lucas in Russell County on May 2-5 as part of the sixth<a href="https://bigkansasroadtrip.com/"> Big Kansas Road Trip</a>.

A project of the non-profit Kansas Sampler Foundation, the purpose of the event is to provide the public firsthand experiences in rural communities and to give these cities a chance to showcase who they are and what they have.

&nbsp;“If you have the Explorer spirit and want to get down to the granular level of knowing rural Kansas, this is a friendly space to do that, ”said Marci Penner, co-director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation.

The public chooses their adventure from a list of 256 entries that include attractions, shops, stops, restaurants, and events in the 12 participating cities. Each person makes their own choice of where to go and when.

There are two state lakes, Kanopolis and Wilson and two scenic byways, Post Rock Scenic Byway and parts of the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway,&nbsp; located in the BKRT area.

In Ellsworth County, a sampling of events includes cattle branding, missile silo tours, Czech dancing, Big Band music and swing dancing, frontier army re-enactments, folk music jamming and pie, a ranger chat about petroglyphs plus attractions like Mushroom Rock State Park, Faris Caves, local museums, Kansas Originals, and the World’s Largest Czech Egg.

Grow Ellsworth County Executive Director, Stacie Schmidt said the Big Kansas Roadtrip has a huge impact on communies, like Ellsworth, even long after the road trip is over.

&nbsp;"We've asked community members to be prideful of their community, to be welcoming. Local people keep asking, 'Is it for us?' Yes it is 100%," Schmidt said. "We want our local communities to go out and become a tourist in their own community and look at all the fantastic things they have in their backyard."&nbsp;

In Lincoln County, there will be Danish pancakes served in Denmark, post rock quarry demonstrations, pie on the porch, owl hikes, dark sky viewing, bingo night, and attractions including local museums, the Lincoln Art Center, the Cookbook House, stone bridges, a microbrewery, the Saline River Dam, post rock buildings, restored buildings, grave witching, and fossil displays.

Lucas, the Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas, includes the Garden of Eden and Grassroots Art Center, the Florence Deeble House, Miller’s Park, the World’s Largest Things Roadside Sideshow Expo, the Bowl Plaza, numerous galleries, an artist cooperative, Brant’s Meat Market, Main Street Pole Art, sculptures, murals, Victorian Geckos, stonework demonstrations, and much more.

One of the fun ways event organizers are tracking attendees is through a map pin board.&nbsp;

"We're sending out visitor logs to all of our participating attractions in shops, shops and restaurants," Schmidt said. "We're also inviting people to add a pin to a board map so people can show where they're from."&nbsp;

"I think this is the biggest opportunity that we have seen in Ellsworth County for tourism in maybe ever," Schmidt said. "The other thing I have been telling people is the<a href="https://bigkansasroadtrip.com/2024-bkrt-guide">&nbsp;road trip guide</a>&nbsp;has an extended shelf life and we know that people don't make it to everything they want to see. A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the deal is worth $34.25 million with $17 million fully guaranteed for this season and most of the rest to be guaranteed on the third day of the 2025 league year.

Kelce, who has been selected to nine consecutive Pro Bowls and is a four-time first-team All-Pro, had 93 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns last season.

From the gridiron to the diamond Monday also saw the release of both KCAC championship tournament brackets, and both K-Dub teams will participate in Great Bend this week

The softball team snuck into bracket play following a sweep of Bethany College last Wednesday, they will be the 7-seed facing Ottawa&nbsp;at noon this Wednesday

Meanwhile the Coyote baseball team will look to double down after winning a KCAC regular season title, facing Evangel&nbsp;on Wednesday evening&nbsp;as this year’s 1-seed&nbsp;

910 KINA Sports Headlines — April 30

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers began investigating a scam after a 65-year-old Salina resident reported multiple calls from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) throughout the weekend.

On Monday, April 29, a Salina resident called SPD officers after receiving multiple calls from alleged scammers veiled as several government organizations.

The calls began on Friday, April 26, after attempting to reach a customer service desk for online shopping.

"She was trying to reach Amazon customer service, so she called the number she found online. It turns out that that was a scammer she called," SPD Sgt. Kyle Tonniges said. "In the call, they transferred her to&nbsp;who&nbsp;they claimed was the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC told her that she was under investigation and had to withdraw $50,000 from her account."

Tonniges said she then visited her bank to withdraw the $50,000 from her account, and a bank employee informed her that it seemed to be a scam, so she decided not to withdraw the cash.

Later that afternoon, scammers continued to call the 65-year-old victim by spoofing or impersonating the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) and other authority organizations.

"That person said she had a warrant because she wasn't cooperating with the FTC," Tonniges said.&nbsp;"She&nbsp;got a call&nbsp;the next day&nbsp;from somebody claiming to be the FTC.&nbsp;She&nbsp;got another call&nbsp;later that day&nbsp;from the FTC, then got a call from somebody claiming to be with the Kansas State University Police Department."

"The scammer was very persistent, although she was not out any money thanks to the bank."

After three days of persistent scam calls, the victim reported the scam activity to the police on Monday, which SPD officers continue investigating.

Scammers impersonate FTC, demands $50,000 from Salina resident

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) –&nbsp;a&nbsp;member of the Senate&nbsp;Committee on&nbsp;Commerce – Tuesday joined his colleagues in co-sponsoring the&nbsp;bipartisan&nbsp;AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, according to a statement from Moran's office.
