Following a pair of selections on Friday with Ben Sinnott selected by the Washington Commanders,&nbsp;and&nbsp;interior offensive lineman Cooper Beebe going to the Dallas Cowboys&nbsp;, Kansas State offensive lineman&nbsp;KT Leveston&nbsp;joined his two K-State teammates by hearing his name called on Saturday during the final round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Leveston was selected with the 34th&nbsp;pick of the seventh round – No. 254 overall – by the Los Angeles Rams. He is the seventh Wildcat all-time selected by the Rams.&nbsp;

Also out of Manhattan, Kansas State added a piece to its backfield on Monday with the signing of transfer running back&nbsp;Dylan Edwards&nbsp;to a Financial Aid Agreement. Edwards, who is transferring in from Colorado and will have three years of eligibility remaining, returns to his home state after playing high school football at Derby. Additionally, Edwards is a legacy Wildcat as his father, Leon, was a K-State running back who lettered from 1992 through 1994.&nbsp;

Kansas Football standout defensive lineman Austin Booker was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Saturday, chosen by the Chicago Bears at pick No. 144. Booker becomes the second Jayhawk selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, joining offensive lineman Dominick Puni, who was picked in the third round at No. 86 by the San Francisco 49ers. This is the first time since 2015 that Kansas has had multiple players selected in the NFL Draft.&nbsp;

Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt has announced that former Chiefs Linebacker/Defensive End Tamba Hali will be the 2024 inductee into the Chiefs Hall of Fame. Hali is the 53rd individual and 49th player to earn this coveted honor. The official enshrinement ceremony into the Chiefs Hall of Fame will be held during Chiefs Legends Weekend at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium this fall.&nbsp;

910 KINA Sports Headlines — April 29

Late Saturday night, a black Honda Civic drove across the intersection of Seventh and Ash streets and struck a 75-year-old Salina resident crossing the street in a crosswalk before driving away from the scene of the incident.

Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman said just after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, someone reported the alleged hit-and-run, but&nbsp;the report did not record if it was a witness or the victim.

"A vehicle that&nbsp;was stopped&nbsp;at the intersection proceeded forward and struck him [the victim] and then left the area," Feldman said.

Due to the low speeds of the incident, the victim had minor injuries like skin abrasions, and emergency services transported him to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment.

Feldman said the report described the Honda Civic as a 2020 or newer model with a male driver.

Late night hit-and-run near Salina City/Saline County building

The month of May is National Bike Month, and communities all across Kansas are celebrating, including those here in North Central Kansas.&nbsp; Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

There are lots of ways to participate in Bike Month, locally, regionally and nationally.&nbsp; Some dates to celebrate are:

May 5 –&nbsp;National Ride a Bike Day.&nbsp; Everyone is encouraged to #bikethere on this day.&nbsp;&nbsp;Whether you’re riding for fun, fitness or with family, or taking essential trips to work or shop, you are part of our movement for safer streets, connected communities, a healthier planet, and happier people. May 8 – National Bike to School Day.&nbsp; This day invites participants to celebrate the joy of active commuting while building a sense of community and school spirit. May 17 – National Bike to Work Day – 40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get around.&nbsp; Residents all across the region are encouraged to ride&nbsp;their bike to work and to share photos on social media by using the hashtag #salinabikestowork2024 or #kansasbikestowork2024

Kansas Mobility reminding the public May is 'Bike Month'

Although not as severe, an active weather pattern is in the forecast across much of Kansas. Cities like Salina, Abilene, Topeka, Emporia and Hutchinson may see 70 mph wind gusts, large hail and locally heavy rainfall throughout the week.

U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) forecasters predict more concerning weather on Wednesday evening rather than Tuesday, with a warning that states, "Tornadoes cannot be ruled out" included in the Wednesday forecast.

On Saturday, May 4, the main event is when four stories of machinery in the 126-year-old Smoky Valley Roller Mills again spin into action as they have since the late 1800s.&nbsp;

Lenora Lynam, the museum Executive Director, said that since the Old Mill is the only working mill using 19th century roller mill technology in the Midwest, the opportunity to see what’s both a giant machine and work of art working as it has for more than a century is a rare experience.

 “It’s a tour that engages all the senses,” she said. “You can feel the floors rumble under your feet; hear the rattle and whir of machines, gears, and belts; see beautifully restored wood and metal equipment; and even maybe smell and taste a bit of the residue of grain dust in the air. If you haven’t gone to Millfest, you owe it to yourself to come.”

Tours run 9:00 a.m.-4:45 p.m. and cost $10 per person during Millfest, but all other museum attractions will be available by donation. For safety reasons, tours are restricted to those 13 years old or older, but when the mill shuts down again at 4:45 p.m. it will open up to families with children ages 12 and younger to take a free mill tour.

These museum holds artifacts from the former Bethany College Museum, but these rare geological and natural history treasures haven’t been seen publicly in decades. Thanks to the efforts of dozens of area volunteers, the museum is able to present the best selection from this fascinating collection.

Adam Pracht, the museum Marketing and Communications Director, said that last year was actually his first time attending Millfest.

“There’s so much to do and see, but the Old Mill running is my favorite,” he said. “Three moments in particular: When it first revved up to speed in the morning, standing outside hearing the antique machines rumble inside, and the very end of the day after the mills are off again, but still slightly warm. There’s a promise there; that history will be here for us to visit again next year.”

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 29

WASHINGTON —President Biden declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas and ordered Federal assistance to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe winter storm from January 8 to January 16, 2024, according to a statement from the White House.

Federal funding is available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm in the counties of Butler, Chase, Cloud, Edwards, Ford, Geary, Gray, Hodgeman, Morris, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Shawnee, Stafford, Trego, and Wabaunsee.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;

Mr. DuWayne Tewes of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.&nbsp;

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Project Salina donations helps the&nbsp;six&nbsp;agencies keep their shelves full when donations are not coming in as needed. Nearly 200 businesses routinely participate in Project Salina.

Project Salina started in 1990 when founding members Jack Parr and Jane Kramer observed that agencies in Salina which feed people in need were running out of food by summertime. These agencies would receive donations during Christmastime and run out of food by June. Summer is the time of greatest need when school is out of session and&nbsp;the parents of&nbsp;school-aged children begin turning to these agencies for three meals a day.&nbsp;

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce visited AJ Honey Honey Farms, LLC, on Friday, April 26, to celebrate a ribbon cutting for joining the chamber and the business's brick-and-mortar location on Ninth Street.

AJ Honey Farms co-owner Allen Stovall told the packed storefront of visitors his and his wife's, co-owner Judy Stovall, journey to opening AJ Honey Farms.

Allen Stovall also shared his passion for helping other beekeepers and spreading awareness and education about the benefits and conservation that stem from beekeeping.

"We always want to see new beekeepers coming in. We're happy to teach it and of course we do not charge to teach something we do because we enjoy helping people learn this trade," Allen Stovall said. "So teaching is a large part of this."

AJ Honey Farms, LLC, celebrates storefront with Salina Area Chamber of Commerce

After an extensive search, the Catholic Foundation for Diocese of Salina Board of Directors is pleased to announce Tyler Greenman as Chief Executive Officer. Tyler currently serves as Assistant Chief Financial Officer for the Diocese of Salina, a position that he has held since 2021.

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Greenman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Metropolitan State University of Denver. He went on to earn his master’s degree in accounting from the University of Colorado Denver and became a Certified Public Accountant.

A convert to the Catholic faith, Tyler was confirmed in 2003. He and his wife, Laura, are parishioners of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Salina and are proud parents to four beautiful daughters.

“I am excited about Tyler taking the position of CEO for the Catholic Foundation. He brings a unique set of skills to the position that will be immensely invaluable. I look forward to working with him in his new role, and the future of the foundation under his leadership,” stated Bishop Gerald Vincke, Diocese of Salina.

Mr. Greenman will officially assume the position of CEO on July 1, 2024, upon the retirement of Katie Platten, who has served as the CEO of the Catholic Foundation since 2020.

Dr. Doug Hinkin of Manhattan, Kansas, Board President for the Catholic Foundation for Diocese of Salina, expressed his gratitude for Katie Platten’s exceptional leadership over the years. “Her dedication and tireless efforts have transformed a small idea into a vibrant, active foundation engaging so many generous donors, schools, and parishes around the Diocese of Salina. The attention to detail, long hours spent with attorneys and others to get the paperwork of the foundation in order, and then the unbelievable amount of time she

has spent traveling the diocese has been remarkable. She has built a rock-solid foundation for the future.”

DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Saturday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Navjodh&nbsp;Singh, 34, Sacramento, California,&nbsp; was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Chapman. The&nbsp; driver changed lanes to avoid a downed tree limb on the highway. The wind blew semi over. 

EMS transported Singh to&nbsp;Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP. The accident blocked traffic for a considerable about of time Saturday afternoon.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A semi involved in an accident eastbound on Interstate 70 at Chapman is blocking traffic.&nbsp; The accident occurred just before 2:30p.m. Saturday.

At a glance: Dry conditions in north central Kansas and other areas have contributed to the relative damage caused by alfalfa weevils in the state’s crop, according to Kansas State University crop entomologist Jeff Whitworth.

Dry conditions in north central Kansas and other areas have contributed to the relative damage caused by alfalfa weevils in the state’s crop, according to Kansas State University crop entomologist Jeff Whitworth.

“Usually this time of year, alfalfa stems are seven or eight inches long,” Whitworth said. “But because of our dry conditions, they’re only four or five. So, any defoliation by alfalfa weevils affects the plant that much more.”

Whitworth routinely scouts Kansas fields for signs of pests, as well as the effectiveness of treatments.

“The fields that were treated (with insecticide) two weeks ago seem to be holding pretty well,” he said. “One of the things we’ve urged producers to do this year is to make sure they cover the foliage adequately. That’s really important because the insecticides labeled for alfalfa weevils are contact insecticides, which means weevils need to come into contact with the insecticide to control them.

Whitworth said his current recommendation for applying insecticide is 10-15 gallons of carrier per acre.

In fields that haven’t been treated, Whitworth estimated “another 7-10 days that those weevils will be feeding” on plants, if temperatures continue to range between 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Those are ideal conditions for the weevil, he said.

Whitworth said the 7-10 day window is "hopefully the producer’s last need to use insecticide to control alfalfa weevils." Once they’re done feeding on foliage, the larvae crawl down into the canopy or to the ground and form a pupal case – which looks like small cotton balls. The pupal case protects them from insecticides and other liquids.

Adult alfalfa weevils are known to leave a field once temperatures reach 80-85 F, Whitworth said, then return the following fall to mate and lay eggs again.

Whitworth said producers should also be on the lookout for the pea aphid, which can affect such crops as pea, clover, alfalfa and broad bean. Persistent dry conditions also can contribute to growth in pea aphid populations, Whitworth said.

“They’re sucking the juice out of the plant, so if they’re competing with those plants for moisture, you may have to consider a pea aphid treatment,” he said. “However, it takes 50 or more (aphids) per stem before I would even consider a treatment.”

Producers should also monitor their fields for beneficial insects, which generally do a good job controlling pea aphids. However, if the producer treated a field for alfalfa weevils, that insecticide may also have killed the beneficial insects.

Whitworth also said that army cutworms could be affecting some Kansas fields, though they are less likely to be found in alfalfa and more likely in wheat. The army cutworm develops into what is known as the miller moth, typically by the end of May, at which time it migrates to higher elevations.

“These moths may aggregate in large numbers, and thus be a serious nuisance prior to migrating out of the state in late May,” Whitworth said.

To look for army cutworms, producers can dig around the soil at the base of plants in several places throughout a field, especially where plants look stressed. According to Whitworth, they look like “half-grown, little larvae, and they’re kind of a dusty color.” They feed above ground.

Whitworth said a good indication of whether an abundance of army cutworms is in a field is the presence of birds, skunks and turkeys, which are especially adept at hunting out and eating the insect.
