On Friday The Kansas City Royals trimmed their magic number to two with a 7-4 victory over the Washington Nationals

Pinch hitter Adam Frazier’s one-out, line drive base hit to left field in the top of the ninth drove in two runs, breaking a 4-4 tie and guiding the Royals to their third straight win following a seven-game losing streak.

To add to the Royals’ big day, the Minnesota Twins fell 8-6 to the Marlins in 13 innings giving both Detroit, and Kansas City a 3-game lead in the AL Wild Card with just 3 games left to go.

A win for the Royals or a loss for the Twins and Mariners will put KC through to the playoffs for the first time since 2015, KC start’s its final series of the season in Atlanta tonight at 6:20

Tonight will also see week four of the high school football season kick off and our area will be busy as the Central Mustangs entertain Eisenhower, Chapman hosts Clay Center, Ellsworth squares off with Lyons, Minneapolis treks to Norton and Bennington heads to Republic County.

Crimestoppers On Monday, September 23, 2024, between 4 and 4:30 AM, a female subject entered Rod’s 8, 2140 W. Crawford, and began talking to customers and the clerk over a 20 minute time frame.&nbsp;

During this time, the clerk went to the back of the business. While the clerk is in the back, the subject goes behind the counter and steals a couple packs of cigarettes, vapes, six lottery tickets and four Mountain Dews.&nbsp;

The subject places the items in a black and white backpack. Prior to leaving the store the subject takes two Armor wipes, a shop towel, a power cord, and three sets of gloves. Total loss was valued at $336.&nbsp;

Producers have a lot to consider when deciding when to start planting wheat — moisture, soil temperature, Hessian fly-free dates and more. Based on research from Kansas State University, another one of these considerations may appear small, at least physically, but could have a big impact come harvest — coleoptile length.&nbsp;

When a wheat seed germinates, one of the first structures to emerge from the seed after the seminal roots is the coleoptile. This plant part is a rigid protective structure that covers the emerging shoot of a wheat plant. As the wheat plant develops, this covering continues to elongate as the young seedling pushes through the soil until it breaks the surface and reaches sunlight. Then, the coleoptile stops growing and the first true leaf emerges through it.&nbsp;

However, if a wheat seed is planted too deep or into the wrong soil conditions, the coleoptile may not be able to break through the soil, leading to a variety of compounding issues for wheat stand establishment. In this case, when the coleoptile is unable to emerge, the first true leaf may emerge underneath the soil’s surface. Then, the leaf takes on an accordion-like appearance, the wheat plant typically becomes yellow and eventually the plant dies. Even if the plant survives, it has limited access to nutrients and sunlight and will result in lower yields.&nbsp;

So how do producers prevent this situation? An additional consideration is soil temperature. Planting wheat too early into warm soil temperatures can further reduce the coleoptile length. Some varieties will not germinate when soil temperatures are greater than 85°F and coleoptile length can be reduced by as much as 60 percent in higher temperatures. K-State recommends that if producers choose to plant in warmer soil temperatures, plant at a shallower depth (3/4 to 1 inch deep), even if moisture is absent in the top layers of soil. Planting wheat deep (greater than 2 inches) increases the risk of poor emergence and unacceptable stands.

By understanding the temperature sensitivity and coleoptile length of their selected wheat varieties, producers have one more tool to help them decide when to plant and how deep to promote better wheat stand establishment.&nbsp;

Producers should consider coleoptile length when deciding when and how deep to plant wheat

The Salina Art Center is calling on artists and designers to participate in its 2025 Galaxy Gala &amp; Fashion Show, an intergalactic-themed runway event aimed at supporting the center’s arts programming for the coming year. 

The event will feature ten artists selected to create avant-garde fashion designs that push creative boundaries and embrace the cosmic theme.

Each selected artist will receive a $300 stipend for materials, a complimentary one-night stay in Salina on February 1, 2025, and admission to the post-show after-party. The designs will be showcased in the runway show at the Hilton Garden Inn in Salina on February 1.

Interested artists should submit their intent to participate, along with preliminary sketches, a materials list, and a brief bio, via email to Misty Serene at <a href="mailto:mserene@salinaartcenter.org">mserene@salinaartcenter.org</a>.

No formal application form is required, but all materials must be submitted by November 1, 2024.

Votes for the designs will be cast online, with each dollar contributing to one vote. The designer receiving the most votes will be awarded a $1,000 prize, and the top five designs will be exhibited at the Salina Art Center from February 5 through March 30, 2025.

The call for artists begins on September 25, 2024, with the submission deadline set for November 1, 2024. The Galaxy Gala Runway Show will take place on February 1, 2025.

Salina Art Center announces call for artists — 2025 Galaxy Gala & Fashion Show

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers arrested a 43-year-old man on requested charges of aggravated battery following an assault in the 700 block of Park Street in Salina on September 24.

According to SPD Cpt. David Villanueva, on Tuesday between&nbsp; 3:21 and 3:30 p.m. a 63-year-old Salina man was attacked from behind while doing yard work. 

" He [the victim] was approached from behind and sucker punched, which knocked him to the ground," Villanueva said. "He did not remember a lot, but he was struck in the face, kicked in the ribs, and there were several other injuries that were inflicted."

The victim was transported to Salina Regional Health Center. In addition to the bruising and the kicking, the victim sustained a broken left collarbone and a portion of his left index finger had been bitten off.&nbsp;

While the victim received treatment for his injuries, SPD conducted an investigation. Officers were able to identify and later arrest and charge Wesley Sprague, a 43-year-old Salina resident.&nbsp;

 The victim and suspect are known to each other, though the motive for the assault remains unclear. An independent witness provided corroborating information that helped police with the investigation.

Sprague faces requested charges of aggravated battery for knowingly causing great bodily harm.

The Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair is set to bring Old West excitement to downtown Salina on Saturday, September 28. The event, held at the Smoky Hill Museum located at 211 W. Iron Avenue, offers a full day of family-friendly activities, entertainment, and food—all for free.

The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with a parade down Santa Fe Avenue. Visitors can then explore the area around the museum, which will be transformed into an Old West-themed playground, featuring a stagecoach, historic demonstrations, free crafts, and more. Highlights include caricature artists, airbrush tattoos, and a chili cook-off.

Chili lovers can sample and vote on their favorite recipes from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for just $2. The winners of the People’s Choice and Judges' Choice awards will be announced at 2 p.m.

Live music will play throughout the day, with performances on the main stage by local favorites.

On Thursday Five Kansas City relievers pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-hit ball after starter Michael Lorenzen's early exit, Robbie Grossman hit a two-run double, and the Royals held for a 3-0 win over the Washington Nationals.

Michael Massey singled in a run off DJ Herz (4-9) to help lift the Royals to a second-straight shutout victory after a season-high-tying seven-game losing streak.

Kansas City and Detroit are both 84-74 but the Royals hold the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over the Tigers for the second wild-card spot. Both teams are still 2 games ahead of the Twins with four games left to play.

More locally Southeast of Saline swept their home cross country meet on Tuesday, with the boys dominating by 23 points over Berean Academy and the girls winning by 15 points over Smoky Valley.

Piper Brown led the way for the girls with a time of 20:42.47 while Brayden Walker took his fourth-straight race win with a time of 16:33.96.

And finally the Kansas State men’s basketball team will host a showcase on Saturday, October 5 beginning at 4 p.m., CT at the Dodge City Civic Center in Dodge City

Kansas Wesleyan will host its first Homeschool Visit Week Nov. 11-15, as one of the fastest-growing universities in the Midwest opens its doors to a growing segment of the Sunflower State’s population.

“Homeschooling is on the rise in Kansas,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Some statistics show that the rate of new Kansas homeschooling families has tripled in recent years. Many of these students are great people and, academically, tremendously qualified. They also are hoping for a university experience that includes personal attention, and that, in a nutshell, describes Kansas Wesleyan. We’re happy to welcome all homeschoolers from across the state to visit anytime, but particularly this week.”

While any student may visit Kansas Wesleyan at any point, this week is a focused opportunity to promote KWU’s inclusion of the homeschool community in its recent academic focus.

“We are proud of how, in recent years, we’ve increased our admissions standards and made a conscious choice in bringing in more academically minded students,” said Oliver. “Just as we know those students attend public and private schools, we also know many are homeschooled. We hope the announcement of Homeschool Visit Week tells the Kansas homeschool community that we recognize that fact, and we welcome them to explore all KWU has to offer.”

KWU hosts first Homeschool Visit Week

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Salina South Middle School administration and officers with the Salina Police Department (SPD) responded to a threat made by a student against the school. In a message to families, Principal Dustin Dooley confirmed that both the school and the police department acted swiftly to address the situation.

The incident took place during the fourth period, around the noon hour, and involved a 13-year-old male student who made threatening remarks to other students. 

According to SPD Cpt. David Villanueva, the student told classmates not to come to school the next day because there would be a shooting. These comments were corroborated through an investigation by the school's resource officer and staff, who spoke to multiple students. 

As a result, the student was arrested and taken to the juvenile detention facility in Junction City on charges of criminal threat. 

SPD did not release the name of the suspect, who is a minor, in accordance with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.justice.gov/jm/jm-9-8000-juveniles">18 U.S. Code § 5038.</a>

Villanueva emphasized the seriousness with which SPD addresses these types of threats.

 "The school alerted us immediately, and we were able to investigate and ensure the safety of the school," Villanueva said. He also noted the strong cooperation between USD 305 administration and SPD throughout the investigation. 

"From the principal to the staff of the district, everyone worked together to address this threat," Villanueva said.&nbsp;

The school district follows strict protocols for reporting any crimes that occur on school grounds, especially those involving serious violent threats. Captain Villanueva added that while schools typically handle lower-level offenses internally, SPD is called in for any felony or violent crime threats to ensure a thorough criminal investigation.

In his message to families, South Middle School Principal Dooley urged parents to talk to their students about the gravity of making any kind of threatening statements and to encourage them to speak to a trusted adult if they see or hear something concerning.

 "It takes all of us to keep our school safe," Dooley said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Saline County Sheriff's deputies and volunteer firefighters from Rural Fire District 5 responded to a fire at the Martin residence at 7600 East North Street Road.

Traditionally,&nbsp;the&nbsp;percussionist&nbsp;in&nbsp;a&nbsp;symphony orchestra&nbsp;can&nbsp;be found&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;back&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;stage, providing support to the violins, violas, cellos, standup basses and&nbsp;wind&nbsp;instruments. 

But&nbsp;for&nbsp;the&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Symphony’s&nbsp;2024-2025&nbsp;season&nbsp;opening “Fantastique”&nbsp;concert,&nbsp;percussionist Hannah Applequist will take center stage for a percussion-based concerto called “The Soaring&nbsp;Souls.”

It’s&nbsp;a&nbsp;challenge&nbsp;she&nbsp;finds&nbsp;both&nbsp;daunting&nbsp;and&nbsp;a&nbsp;great&nbsp;honor.

“It’s my first time as a soloist with the Symphony, and I’m still in shock that I’m doing it,” Applequist&nbsp;said.&nbsp;“I&nbsp;thought&nbsp;Yaniv (Segal,&nbsp;conductor&nbsp;and&nbsp;music&nbsp;director&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Symphony) would bring in a guest artist for it, but he said ‘No, I thought you could do this.’ It’s very exciting. I always enjoy a challenge, and I grow when I step out of my comfort zone.”

“The Soaring Souls,” an energetic and lyrical composition written by contemporary composer Paul&nbsp;Dooley&nbsp;and&nbsp;inspired by the tragic&nbsp;love&nbsp;story&nbsp;of&nbsp;Francesca&nbsp;da&nbsp;Rimini,&nbsp;will&nbsp;feature Applequist on a variety of percussion instruments, most predominately the vibraphone and the marimba.

“It’s&nbsp;a&nbsp;great,&nbsp;dramatic&nbsp;piece,”&nbsp;Applequist&nbsp;said.&nbsp;“I&nbsp;view&nbsp;it&nbsp;kind&nbsp;oflike&nbsp;a&nbsp;movie,&nbsp;since&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;based&nbsp;on a story from Dante’s ‘Inferno.’”

“The Soaring Souls” will be&nbsp;presented at&nbsp;the&nbsp;Salina Symphony’s “Fantastique” concert,&nbsp;kicking off the Salina&nbsp;Symphony’s&nbsp;2024-2025&nbsp;“Kaleidoscope”&nbsp;season.&nbsp;The&nbsp;concert&nbsp;will&nbsp;begin&nbsp;at&nbsp;4&nbsp;p.m.on Sun.,&nbsp;Oct.&nbsp;6,&nbsp;at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.

In addition to Dooley’s concerto, the Symphony will perform “Bal Masque” by Amy Beach and the highly evocative and expressive “Symphonie Fantastique,” a work written by French composer&nbsp;Hector&nbsp;Berlioz&nbsp;in&nbsp;response&nbsp;to&nbsp;his&nbsp;own&nbsp;experiences of heartbreak ,&nbsp;unrequited&nbsp;love and self-destructive passion for a beautiful actress.

Beginning&nbsp;his&nbsp;third&nbsp;year&nbsp;as&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;Symphony&nbsp;music&nbsp;director, Segal&nbsp;said it&nbsp;is&nbsp;important&nbsp;to&nbsp;him that&nbsp;each&nbsp;season&nbsp;tries to build upon&nbsp;the&nbsp;last,&nbsp;both&nbsp;to challenge&nbsp;the&nbsp;musicians&nbsp;and to expose audiences to a variety of classic and contemporary musical experiences.

“My&nbsp;conducting&nbsp;mentors&nbsp;always&nbsp;said&nbsp;that&nbsp;when&nbsp;you practice something,&nbsp;strive&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;a&nbsp;little better than you were before,” Segal said. “We’re building upon what we have, continuing to improve&nbsp;and&nbsp;taking&nbsp;bigger&nbsp;stepsthan&nbsp;the&nbsp;year&nbsp;before.&nbsp;We’re&nbsp;heading&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;right&nbsp;direction and continuing to get better.”

Composer Paul Dooley, a&nbsp;native of Santa Rosa, Calif.,&nbsp;is one of the most prolific&nbsp;and&nbsp;performed&nbsp;American&nbsp;composers working today.&nbsp;Through&nbsp;his&nbsp;music,&nbsp;Dooley&nbsp;explores a&nbsp;cross-cultural&nbsp;rangeof&nbsp;music,&nbsp;dance,&nbsp;art,&nbsp;technology and&nbsp;the&nbsp;interactions&nbsp;between&nbsp;thehuman and natural worlds.

Dooley’s&nbsp;work&nbsp;has&nbsp;been&nbsp;commissioned&nbsp;and&nbsp;performed by orchestras worldwide,&nbsp;including&nbsp;the Nashville Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Singapore Symphony, Macau Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic and the United Nations Chamber Music&nbsp;Society.

In 2013, Dooley joined the music faculty at the University of Michigan, where he created and directed the Performing Arts Technology department’s annual Computer Music Showcase. “Paul is another University of Michigan alumni,” said Segal, himself a Michigan alumnus. “I’ve commissioned pieces from him before.”

“The Soaring Souls,” written in 2022 for solo percussion and orchestra, tells the tragic love story of Francesca da Rimini and Paulo Malatesta in the year 1285, a story famously described in Dante’s “Inferno.” The first movement, “On a Dream,” captures the lovers’ affair, and the second movement, “Storm Eternal,” depicts the lovers in the underworld after they are condemned to the Second Circle of Hell.

“On&nbsp;a&nbsp;Dream”&nbsp;features&nbsp;lyrical&nbsp;and&nbsp;ethereal&nbsp;music&nbsp;for a reduced orchestral instrumentation&nbsp;of solo vibraphone, clarinets, horns and strings. “Storm Eternal” features darker and more dissonant music for the marimba and full orchestra.

“It’s unusual to think of a percussion concerto, but there’s a lot of expression possible in percussion,” Segal said. “When I sawthat Paul had written this concerto, I knew I had the perfect musician for it. I knew it was something we could do with Hannah, who’s a great percussionist.”

Applequist said that while she will utilize different percussion instruments, the first movement is performed primarily on the vibraphone, while the second movement features the marimba.

Although&nbsp;they&nbsp;are&nbsp;similar&nbsp;looking&nbsp;instruments&nbsp;(both rather resembling a&nbsp;xylophone),&nbsp;Applequist said they emit&nbsp;two completely different tones.

“The marimba has very large, wooden&nbsp;keys and is traditionally played&nbsp;with&nbsp;mallets, while the vibraphone&nbsp;has&nbsp;metal&nbsp;keys,” she said.&nbsp;“Because&nbsp;of&nbsp;its&nbsp;metal&nbsp;teeth,&nbsp;the&nbsp;vibraphone&nbsp;has&nbsp;a&nbsp;more metallic sound, but it’s a really pretty sound. In this piece, instead of a mallet, a bass bow is used across the vibraphone keys, which makes a really unique sound.”

The marimba, on the other hand, “has a more mellow tone,”Applequist said. “A lot of ringtones use the marimba, and you hear it in a lot of commercials.”

Amy Beach (1867-1944) was an American composer and pianist, the first successful American female composer of large-scale art music. Her “Gaelic” Symphony, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896, was the first symphony composedand published by an American woman.

“Bal&nbsp;Masque,”&nbsp;written&nbsp;in&nbsp;1893&nbsp;for&nbsp;solo&nbsp;piano&nbsp;and&nbsp;later&nbsp;scored&nbsp;forfull&nbsp;orchestra&nbsp;by&nbsp;Beach,&nbsp;is&nbsp;a charming waltz in the salon tradition.

“Amy Beach was a musical prodigy who wrote a lot of choral music, cantatas, a Mass and several&nbsp;orchestral&nbsp;works,”&nbsp;Segalsaid.&nbsp;“Her&nbsp;piece ‘Bal&nbsp;Masque,’&nbsp;which&nbsp;translates&nbsp;to&nbsp;‘masked ball,’ is a light, charming work.”

In&nbsp;contrast,&nbsp;Hector&nbsp;Berlioz&nbsp;used&nbsp;his&nbsp;musical&nbsp;gifts&nbsp;to&nbsp;create&nbsp;a heavily&nbsp;passionate,&nbsp;soaring,&nbsp;epic work of unrequited love in “Symphonie Fantastique.”

The son of a provincial physician who was expected to follow his father into the field of medicine, Berlioz instead took up music. It didn’t take long for his independent mind and refusalto follow traditional rules and formulas to put him in conflictwith the conservative musical establishment of Paris.

At the age of 24, Berlioz fell in love with the Irish Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson and pursued her obsessively. She inspired his first major success, the “Symphonie Fantastique” (1830) in which he uses a recurring “fixed theme” to create an idealized depiction of Harriet throughout each movement.

“Nothing like it had ever really been written like it before,” Segal said. “Berlioz was one of the most colorful composers in classical music and shockingly contemporary. He was the first to create the idea of a fixed theme; music that keeps coming backthroughout the piece, like John Williams did with the Imperial March in ‘Star Wars.’”

Segal will host a pre-concert talk beginning at 3 p.m. on the Stiefel Theatre stage. Those attending are requested to enter through the theatre’s main doors, which will open at 2:45 p.m.

The overall title of this Salina Symphony season,“Kaleidoscope,” perfectly illustrates both the colorfulness of this season’s opening concert and the entire season as a whole, Segal said.<a></a>

“There’s&nbsp;so&nbsp;much&nbsp;color&nbsp;to&nbsp;downtown&nbsp;now,&nbsp;so&nbsp;we&nbsp;wanted&nbsp;ourprograms&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;colorful&nbsp;too,” he&nbsp;said.

It didn’t take long for his independent mind and refusalto follow traditional rules and formulas to put him in conflictwith the conservative musical establishment of Paris.At the age of 24, Berlioz fell in love with the Irish Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson and pursued her obsessively. She inspired his first major success, the “Symphonie Fantastique” (1830) in which he uses a recurring “fixed theme” to create an idealized depiction of Harriet throughout each movement. “Nothing like it had ever really been written like it before,” Segal said. “Berlioz was one of the most colorful composers in classical music and shockingly contemporary. He was the first to create the idea of a fixed theme; music that keeps coming backthroughout the piece, like John Williams did with the Imperial March in ‘Star Wars.’” Pre-concert&nbsp;talkSegal will host a pre-concert talk beginning at 3 p.m. on the Stiefel Theatre stage. Salina Symphony presents ‘Fantastique’ Oct. 6

At its recent study session meeting, the Salina City Commission received an update on <a href="http://weblink.salina.org/WebLink/DocView.aspx?id=547690&amp;dbid=0&amp;repo=Salina">proposed upgrades</a> to Jerry Ivey Memorial Park. Jeff Hammond, Director of Parks and Recreation, and&nbsp;Jim Schuessler from George Butler Associates, based in Lenexa, presented preliminary designs for the renovations, including a new splash pad, an enhanced water wall, and updates to the park's memorial and landscaping.

Hammond explained that after the demolition of the Jerry Ivey pond, staff conducted community surveys to determine what should replace it.&nbsp;

"Several design preferences of the water feature indicated a preference for a more natural concept of a water feature," Hammond said. "A feature with flowing water and the use of natural stone."

Earlier this year, damage was discovered to the splash pad's plumbing and the City Commission approved design services for upgrades, including the splash pad, water feature, memorial and site improvements.

The proposed new design includes a 30-foot water wall with an eight-foot-wide waterfall, various spray features within the new splash pad and upgraded sidewalks and landscaping throughout the park.

Commissioner Jerry Ivey Jr., the son of the late patrolman Jerry Ivey, said although his family is deeply connected to memorializing the park's namesake, he hoped other commissioners wouldn't simply defer to his judgment.&nbsp;

"I want everyone up here [commissioners] to know that this isn't my decision alone," Ivey said. "Obviously everyone's looking at me for obvious reasons, but I also want to hear the input of everyone else up here."

The project’s estimated cost is $949,200, which includes $85,000 for general demolition, $84,200 for the water wall and $97,000 for memorial upgrades. Pumps and filtration systems for the water features alone are projected to cost $290,000.

Commissioners raised concerns about the scale of the water wall and asked for more detailed renderings. Commissioners also questioned whether the current rendering, which shows the memorial having the backdrop of the high school, would look better if the backdrop were looking on at the rest of the park.&nbsp;

"My brother and I had this conversation this weekend, but I think the park itself is the memorial. It's the Memorial Park, and this [the memorial plaza to Jerry Ivey] is just a small part that kind of says why," Ivey said. "If it came down to dollars and cents, we would rather see the money put towards making the amenities better, the spray grounds better, or the or, you know, those kind of features better, versus making this big, elaborate memorial here."

Hammond said the project is expected to be funded from the park's maintenance budget.

"There is funding approved for this year to cover a portion of the cost," Hammond said. "The remaining portions would come out of that fund balance of park maintenance. That's my tentative plan to fund this was coming solely from park maintenance, but one from an approved project. The approved project was $650,000 for the water feature portion. But then any remaining dollars would come from the park maintenance fund. The fund balance of the park maintenance fund, which I think currently at about $1.8 million."

Annual operational costs for the new features are estimated at $3,500-$5,000, in addition to weekly staff hours during the park’s operational season.

While no final decisions were made, the city aims to complete the upgrades by May 2025, pending further approval and the completion of the bidding process.

 Staff and Schuessler said they would return with refined plans and additional visuals for commissioners at a later date.&nbsp;

Salina City Commission reviews proposed upgrades for Jerry Ivey Memorial Park
