&nbsp;The KWU&nbsp;DECA&nbsp;team is sitting on top of the world. Again.

More than half of the team are world champions in their categories and all of the KWU competitors earned top-10 results at the Collegiate&nbsp;DECA&nbsp;International Career Development Conference in Austin, Texas, April 20-23.

Undergraduate and MBA students from KWU competed with more than 100 universities and colleges, from Division 1 to junior colleges. Guthrie Burch and Kyla Ohlson claimed the world championship in Event Planning, while Oriana Botz and Abigail Palmer did so in Marketing Communications. Courtney Beers and Heidi Jones were the final duo to win a world title, as they accomplished the feat in Business Research.&nbsp;

“KWU&nbsp;DECA&nbsp;continues to get better each year,” said&nbsp;DECA&nbsp;Coach Dr. Trish Petak. “The team continues to not only impress me, but also Collegiate&nbsp;DECA&nbsp;members and coaches at the conference, as we are one of the most recognizable teams there.”&nbsp;

Burch, meanwhile, is closing out her&nbsp;DECA&nbsp;career with honors. With three top-three international results and four top-three state finishes, she is the most-decorated&nbsp;DECA&nbsp;competitor at Kansas Wesleyan. She is also the only one to have brought home a podium finish in two events at the international meet this year.&nbsp;

“DECA&nbsp;taught me so much about who I am and my abilities and gave me so much confidence to speak up,” Burch said.&nbsp;

Burch’s major is Marketing Communications.

DECA&nbsp;is an organized business competition that provides students with problems and requires them to present solutions. Some disciplines require a report written beforehand, while others involve an exam taken prior to the competition. All involve presentations with varying amounts of time to prepare, some as little as 30 minutes.

910 KINA Saturday Morning Show lineup

Salina Family Healthcare Center will receive a $10 million boost from the state as they embark on a capital campaign aimed at building a new family medical clinic on South Ohio Street. 

Senator J.R. Claeys, Republican of Salina, secured the funds in the state budget to support the new $60 million facility. 

Claeys also carried the veto override of additional ongoing state funding for the medical residency programs in Salina and Wichita and the veto override of the $2.2 Million medical scholarship program. Both were successful and will become law.

“Salina is a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to keeping doctors and dentists in Kansas,” said Claeys. “This facility will train the doctors who primarily serve rural areas of our state."

The Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program at Salina Family Healthcare Center will add capacity to train more doctors, pharmacists and dentists for rural Kansas. The current facility in the former YWCA on Prescott is constrained by space, which is causing medical students to look out of state for residency opportunities.

“The state has been focused on the medical school end of the problem for so long and we have been successful creating a new osteopathic medical school in Wichita, producing more medical students,” said Claeys. “Far too many of those students are leaving our state for residency programs, and that's where they end up staying for job opportunities. We need to add capacity in our residency programs to keep doctors here in Kansas.”

Over 80% of the graduates of the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program are practicing in rural Kansas. Almost all have stayed in the state. 

Claeys serves as vice chairman of the powerful Senate Ways &amp; Means budget writing committee.

"I have a genuine interest in the education of our young people," said Irene Carlson, the first woman president of Brown Mackie School and one of the first Kansans to serve on the&nbsp; State Board of Education of Kansas.&nbsp;

Throughout the 20th century, male professors outnumbered women at the college level. Nevertheless, the number of women students and professors increased steadily. However, white men chiefly held leadership roles such as provost, vice president and president.&nbsp;

Women in academia faced many challenges. Negative views about assertive women forced them to conform to meek stereotypes. An attitude that women were inadequate also permeated universities. 

Even with societal changes such as the equal rights movement, the Civil Rights Act and Title IX, opportunities for women remained limited. In the late 1960s and 1970s, it was nationally newsworthy if a woman rose to a position of power.

Irene J. Carlson preferred a career outside the home. Carlson proudly identified as a 'liberated woman' accustomed to navigating a 'man's world.'&nbsp;This&nbsp;began in the 1930s at the University of Kansas Business School, where she was one of the few female students in the field.&nbsp;

In 1938, the KU Business School director recommended Carlson to A.B. Mackie, President of Brown Mackie School of Business. Mackie hired Carlson as a secretary. For decades, she actively weighed in on the strategic development of curriculum and the recruitment of students.&nbsp;

After years of dedication, Carlson reached the noteworthy position of college president in 1964.&nbsp;A&nbsp;role seldom occupied by women during that era.&nbsp;This breakthrough paved the way for other women.

Beyond the college doors, Carlson remained steadfastly dedicated to her community. She eagerly sought ways to serve. Despite facing obstacles,&nbsp;she&nbsp;spent 12 years on USD 305's Board of Education&nbsp;starting&nbsp;in the 1950s. 

She played a pivotal role in&nbsp;the establishment of&nbsp;Salina Central High School, South Junior High School, several elementary schools and a&nbsp;special&nbsp;education center.&nbsp;

Although offered the&nbsp;presidency of the board, she declined.&nbsp;Carlson bowed to societal norms that frowned upon women in leadership roles.&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;Carlson's voice was never silenced. She paved her&nbsp;own&nbsp;way into the local Men's Coffee Club, which met weekly at Neely's Café, where&nbsp;local issues were solved.

In 1969, Carlson ran for the Kansas State Board of Education. At the time, this board oversaw business schools, junior colleges and vocational schools, and secondary and elementary education. Carlson was non-partisan and backed by students, alums and their families statewide. She won by an overwhelming vote, representing 19 counties.

Under Carlson's leadership,&nbsp;around 22,000 students received a quality education. 

In the 1970s, President Carlson brought a significant course change to Brown Mackie College. She phased out a gender-focused curriculum and implemented the Irene Carlson Finishing Course.

Before this, women were encouraged to enroll in the Nancy Taylor Finishing School. These classes focused on manners and etiquette. Men, on the other hand, took the Mr. Executive Management Course. The new course covered business management practices for both men and women.

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D., a member of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, issued the following statement after the Chairwoman, Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), released the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agriculture.senate.gov/newsroom/dem/press/release/chairwoman-stabenow-unveils-the-rural-prosperity-and-food-security-act" target="_blank">Democrats' Farm Bill framework</a>&nbsp;unexpectedly without Republicans input.

“Putting pen to paper on the Farm Bill is long overdue and is welcomed by our farmers and ranchers as the next step in negotiations. As you might expect, the proposal, in its current form, largely reflects the Democrat priorities of more spending in the nutrition title and the addition of many new climate change provisions. Unfortunately, it doesn't put the ‘Farm’ back in the Farm Bill and falls short on the crop insurance and commodity reference price needs of the farmer,"&nbsp;Senator Marshall said.&nbsp;

"We generally support nutrition programs, but they have grown from $60B a year under the last Farm Bill to a staggering $180B yearly, with minimal accountability. On the other hand, while farmers have seen exploding input costs, high-interest rates, and a record drop in farm income, it appears my colleagues across the aisle still did not include a modest $400M a year request to help the farmer."

"We are more than willing to negotiate, but we need a partner that wants to focus on the full-time farm family and comes to the table to discuss our shared priorities,"&nbsp;Marshall said.&nbsp;"Beyond these issues, there remains overly prescriptive conservation policies that will block many producers from using successful programs like EQIP. We've got work to do, and I have confidence we can succeed, but I want a bill that will best support producers for the next five years.”

Hello and happy Friday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Following a stellar 2023-24 season, Kansas State women’s basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has been named the recipient of the 2024 KBCA Women’s Basketball Four-Year College Coach of the Year Award. This is the second time Mittie has earned the honor, collecting the distinction in 2017.

His Cats concluded the 2023-24 season with 26 wins, the most since the 02-03 season, and an 18th NCAA Tournament appearance advancing a round in the tournament for the 13th time. The NCAA Tournament appearance for Mittie was the 23rd postseason trip for one of his programs, including 8 in 10 seasons at K-State.

Thursday also saw the start of this year’s KCAC baseball tournament, and it was a good start for the regular season champs, as Kansas Wesleyan rattled off four unanswered runs to defeat Evangel 5-1.

The Valor kept things close, evening the score at 1-1 in the sixth, but a Kendall Foster double, a Jarrett Gable Triple and a Cruz Oxford double allowed the Yotes to pull ahead and ultimately take the win after a busy seventh.

And finally speaking of baseball the Southeast of Saline Trojans were back in action last night, and completed a two-game sweep of Russell, winning 7-1 and 6-5.

The Trojans conclude their regular season 13-9 overall and 6-4 in league play, finishing in a tie with Beloit for second in the NCAA

NWS-Wichita four day weather forecast, severe storms predicted

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has scheduled two public hearings in June to give Kansas Gas Service customers an opportunity to learn more about the company’s recent rate increase request, ask questions and to make comments before the Commission.

On March 1, 2024, Kansas Gas Service filed an application with the Kansas Corporation Commission requesting a net rate increase in base rates of $58.1 million. The requested increase would affect the portions of a customer’s bill that relate to the delivery of natural gas by KGS, including the fixed monthly service charge and delivery charge. 

If approved, the average monthly residential bill will increase by approximately $6.71 (10.41%) for customers who use less natural gas (73 Mcf or less per year) and $9.48 (8.25%) for those that use more natural gas (more than 73 Mcf per year).

Kansas Gas Service provides natural gas service to approximately 648,000 homes and businesses in 360 communities in Kansas.

KCC schedules June public hearings on Kansas Gas Service rate increase application

<a target="_blank" href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina's</a>&nbsp;student-led chapter of Pilots For Kids, an international nonprofit organization, brought joy and gifts to hospitalized youth in Wichita.

The students recently traveled to Wesley Medical Center to visit more than 40 hospitalized children, ranging from infants to teenagers. They brought gift bags that included toys and&nbsp;special&nbsp;K-State Salina pilot shirts for the kids.

The K-State Salina Pilots For Kids chapter collected more than $2,000 in donations to provide gifts to the children in this project.

"This is a&nbsp;really&nbsp;incredible way for our students&nbsp;to not just develop&nbsp;the academic skills of becoming a pilot, which is what&nbsp;a lot&nbsp;of them are here for, but to go outside into the community and use that passion for the good of others."

K-State Salina's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academic-success-student-affairs/housing/learning-community/">Professional Pilot Living Learning Community</a>,&nbsp;which consists of 25 students in the professional pilot program, have all become members of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pilotsforkids.org/">Pilots For Kids</a>&nbsp;to help bring joy to hospitalized children and share their passion for aviation with them.

The Pilots For Kids operation&nbsp;is dedicated&nbsp;to helping hospitalized children by visiting the youth in hospitals and bringing toys and other needed items to each child.&nbsp;The organization includes&nbsp;major, national and regional airline crewmembers; corporate, military and private pilots; and aviation enthusiasts.

"Through this program, students are learning the process of making the project come to fruition, where they're learning about getting transportation solidified and working on things like budgets to be able to buy the kids all the amazing things that we want to support them with," said Alyssa Wendel, director of K-State Salina student affairs. "Our students are learning to see the whole process come to life from start to finish."

K-State Salina plans to continue its Pilots For Kids program in the coming months. Planning and fundraising processes have already begun for a future visit. The Pilots For Kids operation&nbsp;is dedicated&nbsp;to helping hospitalized children by visiting the youth in hospitals and bringing toys and other needed items to each child.&nbsp;The organization includes&nbsp;major, national and regional airline crewmembers; corporate, military and private pilots; and aviation enthusiasts."Through this program, students are learning the process of making the project come to fruition, where they're learning about getting transportation solidified and working on things like budgets to be able to buy the kids all the amazing things that we want to support them with," said Alyssa Wendel, director of K-State Salina student affairs. "Our students are learning to see the whole process come to life from start to finish."K-State Salina plans to continue its Pilots For Kids program in the coming months. K-State Salina aviation student project raises donations for hospitalized children

A Saline County husband and wife couple have filed to seek the nomination for Saline&nbsp; County Treasurer and Register of Deeds.&nbsp;

Anthony “Tony” Newell filed for the office of Saline County Treasurer on April 29. Mr. Newell is a lifetime resident of Kansas, living in Saline County for 41 years. Newell has been an employee of the Saline County Treasurer’s office since 2021, working in both the Tag Office and Tax Office as an Accounting Technician. &nbsp;

Prior to his employment with Saline County, Anthony worked for Walmart for 23 years in area Neighborhood Markets and Supercenters. During his career with the retailer, he worked his way from Cart Pusher to Store Manager; leading teams in Salina and Concordia as an Assistant Manager, and serving as a Store Manager in Ellsworth, Wichita, McPherson, and Emporia along the way. Newell states “My 23 years retail experience has taught me how to hold myself and my teams accountable to high standards, deliver on budget, and drive financial results”.&nbsp;

Currently Mr. Newell is serving on the City of Salina Human Relations Commission. “My goal is to continue to find ways to grow idle funds, improve efficiencies, and reduce costs for the taxpayer. Our current County Treasurer Jim DuBois has done a great job building a high-performance culture, I plan to continue those standards with sound financial decisions and teamwork," Tony Newell said.&nbsp;

In the next office just east of the Treasurer's Office, Michelle Newell filed for the office of Register of Deeds on April 30. Michelle has been working for the current Register of Deeds for a total of 17 years.

“I have enjoyed my time, there is always something new to learn," Michelle Newell said.&nbsp;

Michelle Newell started working at Saline County in 2003 as an intermittent employee in the Register of Deeds Office. She worked in the office for 15 years, before leaving briefly for a move with Anthony to Emporia.&nbsp; Michelle came back to Saline County in 2021, and resumed her position as a Registrar Specialist. &nbsp;

“I look forward to being able to continue the progress our Register has made in ensuring our records are maintained, secured and easily accessible. The landscape is always changing-with technology and the way records are kept. We must continue learning and adapting to changes in the industry," Michelle Newell said.&nbsp;

Mr. and Mrs. Newell have been married for 20 years, and are proud grandparents.&nbsp; The Newell’s are also active in the county and state Republican Party. &nbsp;

The deadline to file to run for public office in Kansas is Monday, June 3 at 12 p.m.&nbsp;

Anthony and Michelle Newell announce candidacy for Saline County Offices

The&nbsp;statewide&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/center-advancement-entrepreneurship/KEC-competition-info.html">Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge</a>&nbsp;recently awarded more than $75,000 in&nbsp;total&nbsp;prizes to 31 aspiring entrepreneurs.&nbsp;In total,&nbsp;72 businesses and 81 students participated in&nbsp;the event in April at the K-State Student Union.

The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge, or KEC, is a&nbsp;program of the&nbsp;NetWork Kansas Entrepreneurship (E)-Community Partnership and involves several Kansas State University partners, including the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/center-advancement-entrepreneurship/">Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship</a>&nbsp;in the College of Business Administration.&nbsp;Through the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.k-state.edu/105">K-State 105 initiative</a>, the 2023-2024 competition year&nbsp;involved&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/">K-State Research and Extension</a>&nbsp;and Kansas 4-H.

KEC represents the culmination&nbsp;of a sequence&nbsp;of community-based entrepreneurship competitions for students in grades 6-12, known as the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, or YEC, series.&nbsp;Students are selected to compete in KEC by winning a sanctioned YEC series competition or&nbsp;by&nbsp;being selected as one of 16 wildcard participants,&nbsp;who are&nbsp;chosen because of the strength of their executive summary and pre-recorded elevator pitch.

This competition year marks the 11th annual YEC season and was the&nbsp;largest&nbsp;year for the entrepreneurship series, with 1,159 students participating from across the state.

"NetWork Kansas is thrilled with the growth of the YEC Series over the past decade,"&nbsp;said Amara Kniep, director of (E)-Community Partnership.&nbsp;"Our goal is to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in young Kansans and to empower our youth to know that their future is in their hands."

The YEC series consists of local-level youth entrepreneurship competitions hosted by volunteers. Local YEC series events require students to prepare an executive summary and formal presentation,&nbsp;and they often feature&nbsp;interactive tradeshows or elevator pitches. Students work in teams or individually to represent a business concept and compete for awards and prizes.&nbsp;Students'&nbsp;work&nbsp;is judged&nbsp;by local entrepreneurs, public sector partners, teachers and other community members.

The businesses that advanced to the KEC state championship&nbsp;were judged&nbsp;on their executive summaries and mock boardroom presentations.

Students honored at statewide youth entrepreneurship competition

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, at about 9:30 p.m. , a male was walking west on Ash Street in the crosswalk at N. Seventh Street, Salina, Kansas, when he was struck by a vehicle. 

The vehicle then left the area without rendering aid. The male was transported to the hospital and had minor injuries.

The vehicle was described as a black 2020 or newer Honda Civic with an unknown temporary Kansas tag.
