Great music from the Salina Central Jazz Combo greeted guests at the Salina Country Club on September 19 as they gathered for the Salina Education Foundation Fall Breakfast. Guests heard information about grant projects from students and teachers from Salina South, Cottonwood Elementary, and Salina Central.

Kingston Montgomery and MJ White, both students at South High School, attended the event with Elizabeth Burke, South High School’s Library Media Specialist. South High School has the distinct honor of hosting a visit this month from author Meg Medina, the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. 

The grant they received has helped provide additional books for the Cougar Common Read. Each student at Salina South received a copy of Meg Medina’s book for all to read and participate in activities throughout September and October. Kingston and MJ highlighted the significant impact this grant has had on our school community.&nbsp;

“This one grant built so many connections throughout our school," Kingston said.

“When students are given the opportunity to discuss topics that resonate with their own experiences, it can diminish the fear of stigma and rejection. It is also inspiring to witness a character like Piddy from the novel navigate challenges through support and accountability," MJ said.&nbsp;

Cottonwood Elementary students were on hand with their teachers Tessa Yungeberg and Pam Hodson to speak about their partnership with residents at Presbyterian Manor. Last spring, 3rd graders interviewed residents at Presbyterian Manor to write essays and create presentations on the history of their interview partners. 

This intergenerational collaboration fostered personal and academic growth for the students, and relationships developed from this beautiful experience. Students Imogen, Raegan, and Isabella spoke about their experiences interviewing and preparing for their presentations. Barbara King and Amy Kennedy from Presbyterian Manor also talked about their perspectives and the beautiful relationships formed with the students. SEF is proud to have been a part of this wonderful experience for both Cottonwood students and the residents at Presbyterian Manor!

The third grant featured at the Fall Breakfast was from Salina Central. Guillermo Rodriguez and his Jazz Combo students helped to demonstrate the Yamaha HD-300 Harmony Director. It is a valuable tool for music educators that offers powerful ear training and makes class time more efficient. Guests not only got to hear great music from the Salina Central Jazz Combo but also were treated to the live demonstration.&nbsp;

Salina Education Foundation’s Executive Director, Kate Lindsay, thanked the donors and business sponsors. The presentations helped to demonstrate how the SEF grants help to create partnerships with the community and parents. The three highlighted grants were only a sampling of the many great projects in USD 305.

"These opportunities and experiences happen only because of the kind generosity of Salina Education Foundation donors," Linsay said.&nbsp;

The annual breakfast honors donors to the foundation and shares the work their donations make possible. Salina Education Foundation’s grants and scholarships are funded through the generosity of donors from the community, including USD 305 Teachers &amp; Staff, Business Partners, Charitable Foundations, and individuals committed to providing enhanced educational experiences for students.

Salina Education Foundation Fall Breakfast showcases impact of grants

Salina Central Mustangs Theatre Troupe 639 is gearing up for their fall production of "The Heart of Robin Hood", a unique take on the legendary outlaw. Performances will take place on<a href="https://our.show/chstroupe639/robinhood"> Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, October 6, at 2:30 p.m. </a>

The production, directed by Barbara Hilt, promises to be a dynamic blend of adventure, humor, and heart, with a twist on the familiar Robin Hood story.

Unlike traditional portrayals of Robin Hood, in this version by David Farr, Robin and his band of outlaws do not steal from the rich to give to the poor. Instead, they keep the spoils for themselves, creating fear among those who travel through Sherwood Forest. 

The real hero of the story is Marion, who steps forward to protect the poor from the oppressive taxes of Prince John. As chaos ensues, Marion works to convince Robin to follow his heart and stand up for the people if the country is to be saved.

Director Barbara Hilt describes the production as “a spectacularly good time” that blends elements of British Pantomime and American Melodrama. 

“There is joy and humor, and also touching moments within this production that will appeal to a wide audience. It’s a very fun show to perform and watch,” Hilt said.

The show features thrilling stage combat, with students working alongside professional stuntman and fight choreographer Sean Gestl, a Salina native now based in Wichita. Gestl has been training the students to safely handle stage weaponry and perform choreographed fights, adding an extra level of realism and excitement to the production.

The performance will also include technical effects, such as haze, fog, flashing lights, and one simulated gunshot, enhancing the immersive experience for the audience.

Mustang Central High School Theatre​ presents, 'The Heart of Robin Hood' Oct. 4-6

Salina’s final live First Friday of the season, scheduled for Friday, October 4, will showcase a variety of art, music, and cultural events throughout downtown. The evening will allow residents and visitors to explore local talent and get a glimpse at the new BOOM! murals.&nbsp;

Local music group Everyday Lights will perform on the City Lights Stage, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This live performance will close out the series of musical acts that have taken place throughout the First Friday season.

Another event taking place is the opening of the art exhibit Departures: The Art of Leaving This Place, hosted by the Central Kansas Death Care Collective (CKDCC). The exhibit, which focuses on death awareness and the art of departure, will be held at the Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat at 148 South Santa Fe Avenue in downtown Salina. The opening runs from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with remarks at 5:30 p.m.

The Greater Salina Community Foundation will host a special showing of original artwork by Caitlin Veazey Welch at their office located at 119 West Iron Avenue. The exhibit will be open from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., showcasing Veazey Welch’s intricate creations, ranging from abstract to mixed-media art.

In addition, Subvert Studio will feature Tom Fleming’s art exhibit Hortis Conclusis at 116 East Iron Avenue. The exhibit will be open to the public from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., allowing visitors to explore Fleming’s unique artistic perspective.

A special photography exhibit by Eric Lorson, known as FishBones Photography, will also be part of First Friday. This exhibit will take place at A Work In Progress Yoga Studio, located at 218 East Walnut Street, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Lorson, a local photographer, will present his work which spans live music, astrophotography, and landscape photography.

Salina’s final LIVE First Friday of the season — art exhibits, music, photography

A driver's license restoration and expungement clinic will be held in Salina on Wednesday, October 9, at 120 West Ash Street. The clinic, organized by Kansas Legal Services, will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and aims to assist residents in reinstating their driver's licenses and applying for expungements.

Saline County currently has more than 1,600 suspended driver’s licenses, and the clinic will offer support to individuals seeking to restore their driving privileges. In addition to license restoration, more than 50 local residents are expected to apply for expungements, which can clear past criminal records, helping individuals move forward with their lives.

Matt Keenan, executive director of Kansas Legal Services, said approximately 220,000 Kansans have suspended licenses due to missed court dates or unpaid fines.&nbsp;

"These are called poverty fines. It's basically fines that hit the poor and make it difficult for them to get ahead," Keenan said. "If someone misses a court date for a traffic ticket, their license is suspended and remains suspended until they go back to court, pay the fine, and get it reinstated. However, with Kansas having over 620 cities, each with its own court system, rules, and judges, individuals often have to appear in person, making the process of restoring a driver's license time-consuming and difficult."

During the last Kansas Legislative Session, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 500, signed by Gov. Laura Kelly, which reforms Kansas’ approach to unpaid traffic fines by allowing courts to issue restricted licenses instead of suspending them, enabling individuals to drive to work, school, and church while making payments.

Senate Bill 500, effective January 1, 2025, caps license reinstatement fees at $100 and allows courts to reduce or waive costs for those facing financial hardship. It also requires consideration of alternatives like community service and limits penalties for offenses older than five years. 

The bipartisan bill aims to help Kansans maintain their livelihoods while resolving their legal obligations.

Keenan said Kansas Legal Services held its first clinic back in January and aims to hold additional clinics across the state for years into the future. The organization secured a grant for this initiative and is now bringing the clinic to Salina.

Kansas Legal Services will bring in approximately 10 attorneys, including some local legal professionals, to assist participants throughout the day. The clinic is expected to provide a vital service to those affected by license suspensions and past criminal records, offering legal assistance that may otherwise be inaccessible or unaffordable.&nbsp;

Pre-registration is required for those looking to participate. Interested individuals can register by emailing <a>klsprobono@klsinc.org</a> or calling 316-267-3975. Participants are advised to bring an ID, current insurance card if they have it, any documents from the courts or the state about their traffic issues.

 </figure>By SALINA POSTA driver's license restoration and expungement clinic will be held in Salina on Wednesday, October 9, at 120 West Ash Street. The clinic, organized by Kansas Legal Services, will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and aims to assist residents in reinstating their driver's licenses and applying for expungements.Saline County currently has more than 1,600 suspended driver’s licenses, and the clinic will offer support to individuals seeking to restore their driving privileges. In addition to license restoration, more than 50 local residents are expected to apply for expungements, which can clear past criminal records, helping individuals move forward with their lives.Matt Keenan, executive director of Kansas Legal Services, said approximately 220,000 Kansans have suspended licenses due to missed court dates or unpaid fines.&nbsp;"These are called poverty fines. It's basically fines that hit the poor and make it difficult for them to get ahead," Keenan said. "If someone misses a court date for a traffic ticket, their license is suspended and remains suspended until they go back to court, pay the fine, and get it reinstated. However, with Kansas having over 620 cities, each with its own court system, rules, and judges, individuals often have to appear in person, making the process of restoring a driver's license time-consuming and difficult."During the last Kansas Legislative Session, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 500, signed by Gov. Kansas Legal Services offers second chance – driver’s license reinstatement, expungement clinic on Oct. 9

The Tammy Walker Cancer Center, 511 S. Santa Fe Ave., Salina, will host two free screenings for skin cancer and prostate cancer on Saturday, October 12 and 26 from 9 a.m. to noon. 

Space is limited and appointments are required by calling Daniel Craig, Tammy Walker Cancer Center Cancer Outreach Coordinator, at (785) 452-4848.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer found in both men and women. People of all ages should have moles and other unusual skin changes evaluated by a professional.

"Last year's skin cancer and prostate cancer screening filled to capacity within less than two weeks, so we are excited to be able to provide two free screening events this year," Craig said.&nbsp;

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men behind lung cancer. The prostate cancer screening is for men ages 55 to 69 and includes a PSA blood test and physical exam. Prior to testing, men will have the opportunity to consult with a urologist to help decide if the screening is appropriate and desirable. Both skin cancer and prostate cancer can be cured if found early.

The screenings are held in partnership with Salina Masonic Lodge No. 60, Masonic Cancer Alliance and the University of Kansas Cancer Center. The event is open to the public, but registrations are required.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer every day, and nearly 250 of those are diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer. 

The Centers for Disease Control reports that cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in Kansas, and the region has higher than average rates of skin cancer compared to other parts of the country. When it comes to the possibility of cancer, it is always better to catch a potential problem in the earliest stage possible. 

Anyone identified with a possible health concern at one of the free screenings is advised by the screening team to follow up with his/her local physician or provided with information on how to find a healthcare provider.

Free skin cancer & prostate cancer screenings planned October 12, 26

Today, the Kansas Corporation Commission approved a settlement agreement in the Kansas Gas Service (KGS) rate case. Under the agreement, the $58.1 million net revenue increase originally requested by KGS was reduced to $35 million. The bill impact to residential customers, with average usage, is an increase of approximately $3.83 per month or $46.02 per year. The new rates will take effect on November 1.

The company withdrew its proposal to implement two different rate structures based on high or low usage. That proposal, which was opposed by KCC staff and the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board (CURB), would have resulted in a residential rate increase of approximately $6.71 per month for customers using 73 Mcf or less per month or $9.48 more per month for those residential customers using more.

A proposal to implement a performance-based ratemaking mechanism to annually adjust rates was also withdrawn by KGS after facing opposition from KCC Staff and CURB.

In its March application to increase rates, KGS noted it had been five years since its last rate case and the company had invested $600 million in capital expenditures necessary to provide safe and reliable service to customers.

In testimony filed in support of the settlement approved today, KCC staff stated that the agreed upon revenue increase strikes the proper balance between KGS’ desire for reasonable assurances that it will meet its financial obligations and the need to keep rates as low as possible for customers while still providing reliable natural gas distribution service.

The settlement agreement was filed with the Commission in early August. An evidentiary hearing, allowing the Commission to question the parties about the proposal, was held on August 13. KCC approves settlement agreement in Kansas Gas Service rate case

When it comes to success with our plants in the garden and landscape here in Central Kansas, the soil is the place to start.  I like to tell gardeners “Grow the roots and the top will take care of itself”.

It is not a secret that soil health is what we gardeners want, but what can we do to actually build and create the healthy soil that seems so elusive?

If I could choose one practice to improve my garden soil it would be utilizing cover crops.  There are immense benefits to growing plants in our soil that are not meant to be harvested at all.  Cover crops are grown to build soil, prevent weeds, recycle soil nutrients, and even attract beneficial insects into the garden and landscape.

The reason cover crops are at the top of the list for building soil health is due to the power of living roots.  The rhizosphere is the soil layer where live plant roots interface with soil.  The rhizosphere is perhaps the most powerful place in the soil because this is where soil life thrives.

By soil life we mean microbes such as bacteria and fungi in numbers so vast we could never count them.  These microbes thrive in the rhizosphere because live plant roots feed them with sugars that are exuded through root tissues.

One thing that these microbes do in return is secrete ‘glues’ that begin to bind soil individual soil particles together into aggregates.  The microbes live in and on these aggregates, and aggregates form the circulatory system of the soil which allows both water and oxygen to move into and through the soil efficiently and effectively.

Every plant root cell requires both oxygen and water to thrive and so this beneficial arrangement between live plant roots and soil microbes leads to very robust and healthy plants if it can be fostered all year round.

As a note of caution, rototilling a garden too frequently is a certain way to destroy these carefully built soil aggregates and the networks of microbial life that created them

Early to mid-fall is a good time to plant a cool season cover crop in our gardens.  Many summer crops are finishing their life cycle or being removed from the garden now.  Rather than leave the soil bare-which is a desert for microbes-replace the plants being removed with a cover crop to keep living roots in the soil all winter long.

Crimson clover and winter wheat are two cover crops that can be planted separately or together in early October to keep live roots in the soil and create cover for our garden soils over the winter.  Annual ryegrass, hairy vetch, tillage radish, turnips, and mustard are other cool season cover crops found in seed mixes as well.

To establish cover crops, rake the soil and remove significant debris from the previous crop, broadcast seed at the rate recommended on the packet either by hand or with a broadcast seeder, rake the soil again ensure good seed to soil contact, and then water as necessary to maintain moisture and avoid soil crusting which can reduce emergence of finer seeded cover crops.

Cover crops that don’t winterkill will resume growth in the spring and can be mowed, cut with a string trimmer, and tilled or incorporated into the soil 10-14 days before planting warm season vegetables next spring.

It took nearly a decade for the Kansas City Royals to return to the playoffs but the wait was well worth it as on Wednesday, Bobby Witt Jr. beat out an infield single to drive in the go-ahead run, sending the Kansas City Royals into an AL Division Series with a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles with a two-game sweep of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-orioles-al-wild-card-b1a51520c564ba2d18ce0c95d6761758">their Wild Card Series</a>.

With two outs and runners at the corners in sixth inning, Witt hit a grounder to the edge of the dirt behind second base, where Jordan Westburg made a diving stop and throw to first. But Witt was already there after flying 90 feet in 4.14 seconds, allowing Kyle Isbel to score from third.

Kansas City, which endured two seven-game losing streaks over the final month of the season, advanced to face the AL East champion New York Yankees. Game 1 is Saturday in the Bronx.

Staying in Kansas City, on Wednesday the NFL announced that Chris Jones had been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Jones recorded four tackles and two sacks in the Chiefs’ 17-10 over the Chargers, helping Kansas City improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2018. Both of Jones’ sacks came on pivotal third downs, including one late in the fourth quarter.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — October 3

The Saline County Commission met on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and during time for commissioners comments, District Two Commissioner Robert Vidricksen asked about the Saline County Vehicle Tag Office.

Vidricksen raised concerns about the ongoing issue of long lines and delays at the county’s tag office. He noted feedback from constituents and addressed the persistent issue directly.

"We talk about it all the time, and I don't think people really realize that the tag office isn't under the control of the county commission," Vidricksen said. "That's more or less the state situation, but we can help with staffing and so forth."

Vidricksen said when he walked by the county tag office the morning of the commissioner meeting,  there were 17 people in line, not counting the people being helped inside the office. 

"I think it's time for us to, you know, we talk about it, we shake our head and we move on. Let's schedule some sort of a meeting with the with the treasurer's office, and see what we can do to help some brainstorming of some sort. Do we need more room? Do we need more people?," Vidricksen said. "We don't do anything. I think it's time to for us to try to help."

Smith-Hanes acknowledged the challenges the tag office has faced and said he and Saline County Treasurer, Jim DuBois are planning a campaign to promote alternatives to standing in lines. 

"The treasurer and I are meeting to launch a campaign to help better inform the public of the different options other than standing in line," Smith-Hanes said. "Scheduling appointments, paying online, etc. I'm certainly not opposed to the idea of having the treasurer address the commission about other issues. We can look at scheduling that for a meeting later this month."

Treasurer Jim DuBois highlights the fact that there are seldom wait lines at the Saline County Tag Office during the first week of the month.&nbsp;

Smith-Hanes assured the commission that his office would continue to explore solutions to address the issue. 

In June 2024, DuBois announced the closure of the Saline County Satellite Tag Office. Operating as an agent for the Kansas Department of Revenue, the satellite tag office relied solely on the income generated through renewals and title fees. These fees, controlled by state representatives, have not been increased in the last 17 years, which made it difficult to sustain the operational costs of the satellite office. 

Saline County residents can continue to access all necessary services at the City-County Building. Renewals are mailed out 45 days before their due date. To avoid long lines, residents are encouraged to<a href="https://login.nowaitinside.com/booking/ctHNLJWuNJ5RjJNgi0UkCboV"> utilize the No Wait Inside online scheduler</a> or to<a href="https://ikan.ks.gov/"> process tag renewals and payments online.</a>

There is no additional fee for mailing renewals.

"I know that the closure of the satellite office may be an inconvenience," said Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois. "We've asked the state legislature for the last seven years to try and come up with solutions to help us and it fell on deaf ears. I will say our local legislators were very good at working with us."

On August 1 the Saline County Tag Office expanded its open hours to help relieve long lines.&nbsp;

"I think it's time for us to, you know, we talk about it, we shake our head and we move on. Let's schedule some sort of a meeting with the with the treasurer's office, and see what we can do to help some brainstorming of some sort. Do we need more room? Do we need more people?," Vidricksen said. "We don't do anything. I think it's time to for us to try to help."Smith-Hanes acknowledged the challenges the tag office has faced and said he and Saline County Treasurer, Jim DuBois are planning a campaign to promote alternatives to standing in lines. "The treasurer and I are meeting to launch a campaign to help better inform the public of the different options other than standing in line," Smith-Hanes said. "Scheduling appointments, paying online, etc. I'm certainly not opposed to the idea of having the treasurer address the commission about other issues. In June 2024, DuBois announced the closure of the Saline County Satellite Tag Office. Operating as an agent for the Kansas Department of Revenue, the satellite tag office relied solely on the income generated through renewals and title fees. These fees, controlled by state representatives, have not been increased in the last 17 years, which made it difficult to sustain the operational costs of the satellite office. Saline County residents can continue to access all necessary services at the City-County Building. Renewals are mailed out 45 days before their due date. To avoid long lines, residents are encouraged to<a href="https://login.nowaitinside.com/booking/ctHNLJWuNJ5RjJNgi0UkCboV"> utilize the No Wait Inside online scheduler</a> or to<a href="https://ikan.ks.gov/"> process tag renewals and payments online.</a>There is no additional fee for mailing renewals."I know that the closure of the satellite office may be an inconvenience," said Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois. "We've asked the state legislature for the last seven years to try and come up with solutions to help us and it fell on deaf ears. Vidricksen addresses tag office wait times at Oct. 1 County Commission meeting

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment together advise Kansans to be alert to the human health risk caused by unvaccinated animals, following a second detection of rabies in a cat in the last two weeks, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

The two cases were in Jewell County and Harvey County, and both involved outdoor cats which exposed multiple humans and other cats. The known human exposures have started rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, a series of five vaccinations to prevent rabies in humans.

Rabies is a viral disease transmitted by the bite or scratch from a rabid animal. There have been six positive cases of rabies in cats this year, as well as several cases in wildlife. Both of the cases this month were in unvaccinated outdoor barn cats.

“Rabies is not unusual in the wildlife population, and unfortunately this often means domestic animals that roam freely can be exposed to the virus,” said Animal Health Commissioner Justin Smith. “It is vital to vaccinate domestic animals against rabies, especially animals that interact with humans, because humans can be infected. Vaccinating pets and livestock against the virus protects both animal health and human health.”

Even if an animal is kept indoors, ensuring their vaccination against the virus is up-to-date serves as an important barrier if they are ever exposed to a wild or stray animal that could be carrying the disease. Those who have barn cats should have them vaccinated against rabies.

Many Kansas cities and counties have vaccination requirements; know what is required in your community and contact your veterinarian for more information about rabies vaccination.

Rabies attacks the brain and spinal cord and can take several weeks to months for symptoms to appear, but early treatment after an exposure can prevent rabies in both humans and pets that are up to date on vaccinations. The vaccination is highly effective.

If you notice unusual behavior in your animal, or you think your animal may have had contact with rabid wildlife, it is important to immediately contact your veterinarian to determine the next steps to take.

If you are a veterinarian, remember to always consider rabies as a potential diagnosis for neurologic animals.&nbsp;In Kansas, rabies is&nbsp;a reportable disease which requires a veterinarian to report a positive rabies test&nbsp;to the KDA Division of Animal Health.

In order to prevent the spread of rabies, people should teach children to be cautious around outdoor animals, wild or domestic, even if they look to be friendly; wash a wound from an animal encounter thoroughly with soap and water and get medical attention immediately; keep pet vaccinations current; and monitor pets when outside.

Curated by Joe Iurato, the artists are selected based on their unique style, portfolio, and influence in the contemporary mural scene. Martha Cooper, the legendary photographer, will again be joining for her third year, capturing the magic of the festival.

First launched two years ago, the Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival has since been a platform for the public to witness exemplary work from diverse artists, the murals from past years still enhancing the beauty of Salina's downtown area. The 2024 festival promises an even richer visual feast not to be missed.

September 30 - October 5 – Artists will be painting at various locations in downtown Salina, and the murals will be in full swing. Mural locations will be announced at the start of the festival via social media.

October 4 - Join festival crew at 6:30 p.m. at the Salina Art Center for 'First Friday'. The highlight of the day will be the 2024 BOOM! Salina Artist Panel Discussion and the Photography Show featuring the 2022 &amp; 2023 BOOM! Salina works by Martha Cooper and Tanner Colvin. First Friday by Salina Downtown will also feature other live music and art galleries.

October 5- Join in the fun at Kid’s Creative Corners from 12 p.m. -1:30 p.m. with visual artist David Zinn and learn how he creates his whimsical creations using chalk, charcoal, and found objects. David will give a brief presentation followed by a chance to draw with the artist. Children of all ages are welcome, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Known for his dynamic graffiti that bridges pop art and urban aesthetics, Sen2 has a rich history of collaborations, including with iconic artists and celebrities. His work on canvas combines bold graphic lettering, 3-D elements, and vibrant colors, reflecting his roots in New York graffiti and his evolution into a fine artist admired worldwide.

A self-taught muralist from Galicia, Spain, Lidia Cao is recognized for her expressive figures and faces rendered in a predominantly monochrome palette. Her work captures human emotion with minimalistic lines and textures, and she continues to expand her artistic horizons in muralism, leaving a distinct mark wherever she paints.

Known for his lively and colorful murals, Curtis Hylton infuses public spaces with energy through his bold designs. His murals are characterized by their vibrant hues and intricate details, engaging viewers and transforming their surroundings into immersive experiences.

Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who has specialized in shooting urban vernacular art and architecture for over forty years. In 1977, Martha moved from Rhode Island to New York City and worked as a staff photographer at the NY Post for three years. 

During that time, she began to document graffiti subjects which led to her extensive coverage of early Hip Hop as it emerged from the Bronx. These photos, published worldwide, helped make Hip Hop the predominant international youth movement it is today.

The American Legion Post 62 and VFW Post 1432 will host the Salina Community Family Day on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the VFW Post, 1108 Crawford in Salina. The event will feature family-friendly activities such as food trucks, vendors, kids' games, a petting zoo, live music, a cornhole tournament, and a beer garden.

A key event during the day will be the Chili Cook-Off, scheduled for 6 p.m. Participants in the cook-off can compete for cash prizes and engage in a fun competition open to all ages. The event also offers a People’s Choice award, making it an engaging opportunity for both chili enthusiasts and the local community. For those interested in tasting, a $7 fee includes chili samples and two drinks.

For those who enjoy cooking or competition, the chili cook-off offers the chance to showcase their culinary skills, win prizes, and enjoy a lively community atmosphere.
