Several Kansas State University partners are continuing an important collaboration with NetWork Kansas to build the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge as one of the leading youth entrepreneurship competitions in the state of Kansas.

The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge, or KEC, is a program of the NetWork Kansas Entrepreneurship E-Community Partnership and involves several K-State partners, including the Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship in the College of Business Administration.

Through the K-State 105 initiative, K-State Research and Extension and Kansas 4-H are involved for the second year in a row. K-State Research and Extension and Kansas 4-H are providing nearly $100,000 in support for KEC per year for three consecutive years.

"Youth are the future of Kansas," said Gregg Hadley, K-State assistant vice president and director for extension. "The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge enables youth to develop and implement innovative business ideas. K-State is excited to work with NetWork Kansas and our 4-H youth development program to provide the education our youth need to be confident business leaders in the future."

The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge represents the culmination of the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, or YEC, Series, a sequence of community-based entrepreneurship competitions for students in grades 6-12.

NetWork Kansas, a statewide entrepreneurial organization, coordinates the YEC series and KEC in partnership with the K-State Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship. The 2024-2025 competition year marks the 12th annual YEC Series

During the most recent 2023-2024 competition year, the YEC Series held 58 local-level competitions featuring 1,159 high school and middle school students from across Kansas. More than $90,000 in prize money was awarded to winners across the state. First-place winners of local YEC events, plus 15 wild-card entries, advanced to KEC, which occurred at K-State in spring 2024.

At KEC, young entrepreneurs competed in three rounds of live mock board rooms and a separate, optional tradeshow as well as a networking game. Overall, more than $80,000 in total prizes were awarded at the 2024 KEC.

"Their dedication to serving Kansans and offering resources across the state aligns closely with our mission. K-State partners, NetWork Kansas continue K-State 105 collaboration for statewide Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge

 Textron eAviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today announced it will conduct flight testing for its Nexus eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) full-scale technology demonstrator aircraft at Salina Regional Airport (SLN) in collaboration with the Salina Airport Authority. 

This program will follow the successful conclusion of initial restrained flight tests, which are planned for 2025 at the National Institute of Aviation Research facility in Wichita. The flight test program at Salina Regional Airport will be instrumental in validating the aircraft's full performance envelope.

The Nexus is a multi-mission aircraft designed to address the global demand for sustainable aviation solutions. This zero-emission aircraft, configured for one pilot and four passengers, is powered by a distributed electric propulsion system. It features four tilting propellers and two aft stationary vertical rotors, enabling a wide range of applications such as passenger transport, public aircraft operations and cargo services.

Salina Regional Airport has established itself as a key site for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) testing, having hosted Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) operations under the Federal Aviation Administration’s Integration Pilot Program (IPP) and Beyond programs.

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are investigating the theft of an electric bike after a burglary was reported on Maple Avenue on Friday.&nbsp;

According to SPD Cpt. James Feldman, on Oct. 4, a suspect forced entry into a detached garage located in the 500 Block of Maple Avenue between 2:30 p.m. and 5:40 p.m.

"The 45-year-old homeowner reported that his blue X1500 electric bicycle, valued at $3,000, was stolen. The forced entry caused approximately $220 in damage to the door," Feldman said.

The victim, who was not home at the time of the burglary, has named a known suspect. SPD officers are actively looking for the individual, who is believed to be an associate of the victim. Officers are also working to obtain any potential video footage from nearby surveillance cameras.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

2024 Election: Deadline to register to vote quickly approaching

Our local Oktoberfest celebration took place a few weeks ago. This event is one of my favorite, and one of my biggest volunteer commitments. Everyone on the planning committee puts in a lot of time and effort with the sole purpose of raising money to better our community, and we have a great time doing it.

We have had great weather over the years for the event and bad weather was bound to hit us at some point; this year it hit us hard.

For the 10 days leading up to Oktoberfest, a bit of anxiety built as we watch rain dance in and out of the weather forecast. We explored options for moving the event but found that wouldn’t work with some of our licensing. We decided to move forward and hope for the best.

About an hour before the event’s start time law enforcement showed up to let us know straight-line winds of 60-plus miles per hour were headed our way. Before the squad car left the park, huge drops of rain were hitting us and the wind came up on us like a freight train.

Our crew rushed into action trying to salvage decorations and other light objects. Then some of our smaller tailgating size tents for tickets and the stage started to bend and break. We dashed through the rain to help the band get instruments loaded back in their vehicle to avoid further damage.

When there was no more that could be done we all took shelter under our only sturdy tent and waited out the rest of that down poor watching cascades of rain creating rivers and lakes throughout the park. It was clear the event would not be what we had hoped. It would have been easy to call the event off and admit defeat at this point.

However, the Oktoberfest committee has a very clear understanding that we make our community by raising money AND hosting a fun community event. We went into crisis management mode and talked through a lot of options for salvaging the event before settling on a plan.

When the first and high winds stopped, we sent out word to the community the event would look different but it would still happen. We invited people to join us for some fun in the rain. Amazingly, without a band or most of our activities we still had almost 300 people, which is a little less than half of our normal crowd, show up to raise a glass, grab dinner and join in an unforgettable Oktoberfest. We are so grateful that people showed up in less than ideal circumstances and make the best of a tough night.

Our misfortune was fairly small with everything happening in the world. People in western North Carolina are not worrying about the loss of their crops, property and roads, they are working to save their neighbors and help those in need. People with terminal illnesses are fighting for their lives while securing for the needs of their loved ones. People with big and small problems are finding ways to make their life and those around them better.

Life is full of unpredictable and often unpleasant circumstances. The only thing we can truly control is our reaction. You can choose to work toward solutions instead of focusing on everything that is going wrong. You can choose kindness, grace, forgiveness and optimism.

When there are storms in your life, will you call the game on account of rain or invite friends to join you in the rain?

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) would like to remind Kansans as we approach the respiratory virus season to remain aware of symptoms, preventative measures and when to seek medical treatment.

Every year, respiratory viruses such as influenza (flu), COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and pneumococcal disease cause hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths during the fall and winter virus season.

“We know the risk of contracting and spreading respiratory viruses will increase as we move into the fall and winter months,”&nbsp;KDHE Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dereck Totten said.&nbsp;“It is imperative that people follow common-sense preventative measures and consider getting a vaccine, especially if they fall into a high-risk category.”

Getting an immunization is an important preventative measure against respiratory viruses. &nbsp;Vaccines are available for all three major fall and winter respiratory diseases – flu, COVID-19, and RSV (for groups eligible for RSV immunization). In addition, pneumococcal vaccines are recommended for children younger than five years, adults, 65 years and older, and individuals at an increased risk for pneumococcal disease.

Kansas will receive approximately $780,000 from the federal government this year to cover about 9,380 COVID-19 doses for uninsured and underinsured adults. These doses will be equitably distributed across Kansas to Local Health Departments, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics, and other vaccination locations to help provide vaccine coverage to uninsured and underinsured adults in Kansas.&nbsp;

While anyone can become sick from common respiratory viruses like COVID-19, flu, RSV, and pneumococcal disease, some individuals have risk factors that can increase their chances of getting a severe illness.

Groups of people at a higher risk for respiratory illnesses:

Older adults &nbsp;Young children People with weakened immune systems People with disabilities Pregnant and recently pregnant individuals

If you believe you may have a respiratory virus (if you feel sick or tested positive for one) and you have risk factors for severe illness, seek health care right away for testing and/or treatment.

If you test positive for the flu or COVID-19, treatment may be an option to make your symptoms less severe and shorten the time you are sick. Treatment should be started within a few days of when your symptoms begin.

Examples of respiratory virus symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny or stuffy nose, decrease in appetite, sore throat, vomiting, new loss of taste or smell, headache, muscle or body aches, diarrhea, and/or weakness.

Washing hands and improving airflow in the places where people live and work are important to lowering risk from respiratory viruses.

 Effective treatments are available for those who get flu or COVID-19 and are recommended for those at higher risk for severe illness. Treatment can reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

 You should seek emergency care‎ if you have an emergency warning sign (like trouble breathing or chest pain), seek emergency medical care immediately.

 Everyday actions like masking and physical distancing can provide an additional layer of protection and can protect their family, friends, and coworkers.

 Tests are available that can quickly detect these respiratory viruses.

KDHE reminds Kansans to be aware as respiratory virus season approaches

Fire Prevention Week, observed from October 6-12, highlights the critical role of smoke alarms in saving lives during home fires. According to the <a href="https://www.nfpa.org/events/fire-prevention-week?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwjY64BhCaARIsAIfc7YYLk0kWyG31kjZKIeUQuhKS4FoQk2sTnlY8WA-ZqSgs_kvl5ETzXyIaAr_0EALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds">National Fire Protection Association</a> (NFPA), having a working smoke alarm in the home can reduce the risk of death by more than 50%. Despite this, three out of five fire-related deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

To enhance safety, the NFPA offers the following recommendations:

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

Ensure alarms are accessible for all household members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

Test smoke alarms monthly to confirm they are functioning correctly.

 Replace smoke alarms every 10 years to ensure reliability.

By following these tips, individuals can significantly improve home safety and reduce the risk of fire-related fatalities. Fire Prevention Week serves as a reminder to check and maintain smoke alarms regularly to prevent unnecessary tragedies.

Amy Cole brings over twenty years of leadership experience to her new role at the AIM Center. Additionally, Amy founded Curated Strategic Business Solutions, providing specialized consulting services to various businesses.

In her capacity as Executive Director, Amy will lead the AIM Center’s strategic direction, business growth, and recruitment efforts, solidifying its position as a premier aviation maintenance training facility. Her responsibilities will encompass nurturing partnerships with key stakeholders like Kansas State University, Dreiling Aviation Services, and the Salina Chamber of Commerce. Amy will also drive fundraising initiatives, spearhead student recruitment programs, and oversee grant management to expand the accessibility and impact of the AIM program.

Amy Cole named new executive director at AIM Center of Excellence

On Friday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The Salina Emergency Aid/Food Bank received a phone call asking if they would accept a free delivery of 37,000 pounds of potatoes from Idaho.

"Of course, we said yes," said Salina Food Bank Executive Director Karen Couch. "It is the great potato giveaway, and we'd love for everyone in the community and surrounding area to come grab boxes and boxes of potatoes from us."

The giveaway, dubbed the "Great Potato Giveaway, " was located at the food bank's parking lot at 255 South Chicago Street in Salina. 

"The goal was to clear space before another semi-load of food arrives on Wednesday," Couch said.&nbsp;

On Monday morning, it took only three and a half hours to find homes for 14 pallets of potatoes.&nbsp;

"If you missed your chance to grab some, we still have bags of potatoes that are 'hit &amp; miss' still available to sort through," Couch said.

UPDATED The 2024 Great Potato Giveaway: Salina Food Bank gives out more than 37,000 pounds of spuds

Hello and happy Monday, everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine…

Over the weekend, Alex Verdugo hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning and saved at least one run with a sliding catch along the left-field line, boosting the New York Yankees over the Kansas City Royals 6-5 in their AL Division Series opener.

This was the first postseason game to see five separate lead changes, and may very well have come down to the Royals tying their season-high in walks with eight for the game, including a pair of walked in runs in the fifth inning.

The Royals return to the Bronx tonight at 6:38 pm for game two of the series

It was also a busy weekend for our college footballl teams, and in McPherson, the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes battled, but couldn’t find their footing offensively in a 42-13 rout.

The Yotes will take the conference-wide bye week to rest up and get healthy, and despite being 2-4, still find themselves in the hunt for the Bissell division’s playoff autobid with a fresh start in two weeks.

As a reminder with no game on Saturday there will also be no coaches show this Wednesday.

While Kansas State was on bye, KU was in action this week, and fell to a new foe, but an old nemesis as Arizona State took them down 35-31 in the desert

And finally, this evening, the Kansas City Chiefs will look to join the Vikings as the only undefeated teams in the NFL when they host the 2-2 New Orleans Saints at 7:15

By SALINA POST Kansas businesses and entrepreneurs were honored Thursday night during the Kansas Department of Commerce’s 2024&nbsp;To The Stars: Kansas Business Awards&nbsp;ceremony at the Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau. The event recognized their outstanding contributions to the state’s economy and communities.

It was announced at the ceremony that Nu Life Market in Scott City won the 2024 Governor’s Award of Excellence, and KSi Conveyors in Sabetha earned the 2024 Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award.

“Nu Life Market and KSi are both large contributors to our state’s growing economic success in the agribusiness and food processing industries,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “By honoring and showcasing their accomplishments, we aim to inspire other businesses to keep reaching for new opportunities across our state.”

A record 346 businesses, organizations, and individuals were nominated in nine categories for this year’s&nbsp;To the Stars: Kansas Business Awards. Nominees were reviewed and scored for various criteria, such as business expansion, employee recruitment and retention practices, training and educational programs, capital investment, and support of local community events. A total of 226 Merit Awards and 45 Regional Awards were presented at the event. Additionally, one nominee in each category was designated a Statewide Winner, making them finalists for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.

“Our state has been reaching unprecedented heights in terms of business investment and economic growth in Kansas thanks to companies such as those we’re honoring here,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Each of the nominees play a critical role in the new era of Kansas we are creating — they are truly the pillars of our success and more than worthy of being celebrated.”

Kansas businesses, entrepreneurs honored at 2024 To The Stars awards in Great Bend

Despite being surrounded by farmland, school districts in western Kansas struggle to source local food options to feed kids. But farm tours given by the state’s Child Nutrition and Wellness program can establish new pathways to keep kids healthy

<a href="https://www.hppr.org/people/calen-moore"></a>GARDEN CITY&nbsp;—&nbsp;Deep into western Kansas, there’s an abundance of corn and cattle. But there aren’t as many juicy tomatoes, crisp apples or fresh squash.

That has left residents in vast pockets of the state&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/2023-03-22/rural-grocery-stores-are-dying-off-heres-what-some-communities-are-doing-to-save-them" target="_blank">without access to nutritious foods</a>. For these communities, finding produce may be inconvenient at best, despite being surrounded by farms.

And schools are no exception in the search for healthy food. That’s why staff from the Kansas Department of Education are trying to find solutions by connecting school districts to local farms to benefit both parties.

As part of that effort, a busload of school district nutrition directors recently drove out to western Kansas farms so that schools could have more options to access local food.

But Eryn Davis, the state’s Farm to Plate program coordinator, said in this part of Kansas, finding food for humans rather than livestock is a challenge.

“From my research, it was limited on what I could find in western Kansas, both in Garden City, and even north in Colby,” Davis said.

Even though rural Kansas has direct access to agriculture, most farms in Kansas grow commodity crops such as soybeans, wheat and corn. That limits the access rural Kansans could have to other healthy foods.

The 2008 farm bill encouraged institutions operating&nbsp;<a href="https://cnw.ksde.org/f2p/program-overview" target="_blank">child nutrition programs</a>&nbsp;to purchase unprocessed locally grown and locally raised agricultural products.

This in theory would benefit the health of rural children and boost the ag economy of local farmers, lawmakers said.

As a result, the Farm to School program was established in Kansas to provide grants, materials and connections to local producers and gardening education for schools.

Davis said locally sourced food not only provides more nutrient-dense options, but it also has economic benefits.

“It’s supporting the economy of our Kansas communities that we have here, keeping our dollars. Repurchasing from Kansas producers is a big push for local foods,” Davis said.

Most school district leaders on the tour said they rely on trucking in their food from eastern Kansas, although they each had the same locally sourced foods in common: beef, dairy and tortillas.

But the need for vegetables and fruit in southwest Kansas remains.

The first stop on the tour was connecting districts from Dodge City, Garden City and Sublette to a poultry farm outside of Lakin.

As soon as everyone made their way off the bus, the chickens timidly surrounded the group of outsiders.

The Diamond W Farm and Ranch is a family operation specializing in egg production, owned by Samantha Williams with her husband and three sons.

“I started with 15 chicks, and I said, ‘It’s just as much work (with) 15 chicks as 100 chicks,’ so I got 100, then 200, and now we have anywhere from 300 to 500 chickens laying eggs at a given time,” Williams said.

The Williams family are one of the largest egg producers in southwest Kansas, and they deliver to nearby towns.

Williams initially got her egg license to provide eggs to the day care her boys attended. The operation grew so they could provide eggs to feed more children in the surrounding towns.

“I love getting up and seeing the chickens’ fluffy butts every morning; it's like my form of therapy,” Williams said.

After seeing what the Williams family could offer school districts, everyone filed back onto the bus and started brainstorming ways they would like to use local eggs.

The bus then traveled back to Garden City to the only produce farm in town, Prairie Wind Produce.

Steven Michel runs the produce farm with his wife. One thing about Michel – he’s passionate about produce.

“Me and the wife had a seniors meal the other day. It had two cherry tomatoes; they were mushy and had no flavor. People come try our tomatoes and they’re back three days later,” Michel said.

Standing in a greenhouse forest of tomatoes, school district leaders in Garden City said they hadn’t known about this produce farm in their own town. They passed around fruits and vegetables, marveling at each one.

The Michels are the exception rather than the rule in western Kansas. Michel serves as the vice president for the Kansas Specialty Crop Growers Association.

 </figure>Limitations to local foodsThe Michels are the exception rather than the rule in western Kansas. Michel serves as the vice president for the Kansas Specialty Crop Growers Association.“We are the only ones that grow more than two or three vegetables in at least a 60-mile radius – it’s just us,” Michel said.That’s part of the limitation to a Farm to School program like the one in Kansas. For some school districts, there just is not a lot of local produce to source.Michel said some of this is a lack of growers and education. Western Kansas no longer has horticulture expertise from Kansas State University, which Michel believes has discouraged the growth of gardens.Most of the produce consumed by Kansans – 95% – is grown outside of the state. Schools are the only place for some kids to get nutritious meals from local sources.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/about/news/news-archive/rural-kansas-food-deserts.html" target="_blank">Those living in the breadbasket</a>&nbsp;have significantly higher rates of diabetes, colon cancer and heart disease, according to the University of Kansas Medical Center.Experts say for the Farm to School program to be successful in a place like western Kansas, there will need to be more produce growers.But specialty crops aren’t covered as well by crop insurance that guarantees against drought or hail storms, which have become staples of western Kansas’ climate.Plus, growing produce is labor intensive, Michel said. And rural Kansas has made its claim to fame being able to grow more with fewer workers thanks to technology advancements and large-scale grain.But Davis, the coordinator of the Farm to Plate program, is optimistic that these farm tours help make the connections both farmers and school districts need. By giving producers a wholesale market, and schoolchildren fresh produce grown down the road, she thinks that this is a program that can chip away at both problems.“It's a good way to bring nutritious local foods to the community, and that partnership with the producer is important, too, to support their business,” Davis said.Calen Moore covers western Kansas for High Plains Public Radio and the Kansas News Service.
