Hello and happy Thursday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

On Wednesday The Salina Liberty and Nashville Kats each agreed to a schedule amendment proposed by the league and will square off in Nashville on Sunday, May 12th at 2:30.

This game replaces a matchup that would have seen the Liberty travel to Oregon to battle the BlackBears. The league is still working on reschedule the Liberty’s road matchup with Wichita, form more on that stay tuned to Salina Post.

Elsewhere in our area The Sacred Heart golf team rolled to yet another league title, taking five of the top six spots at this year's NCAA league tournament.

Seniors from all over the area took center stage, with Southeast of Saline's Dylan Esch and Sacred Heart's Walker Tuttle tying for the top spot, each carding a 73 on the day.

Excitement is ramping up as Wildcat fans will soon get the opportunity to see their favorite student-athletes and coaches as part of the Kansas State Athletics Catbacker Tour, which will begin on May 14th in Salina before heading to Western Kansas

And finally the NAIA Flag Football National Championships in Atlanta kicked off yesterday and Kansas Wesleyan split their two matchups, defeating Reinhardt University 36-6 before falling 33-7 to Thomas University. Action continues today at 11am

Anyone who’s ever lived in a house with newborn twins knows they can be a lot of work to take care of. When twin births happen in the beef herd, it often brings about special management considerations, say the experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksre-learn.com/cattle-chat-managing-twins">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, K-State assistant professor of animal welfare Eduarda Bortoluzzi and K-State veterinarian Bob Larson discussed steps producers should take in managing twins.

“Twins in beef herds are more common than people might think,” Bortoluzzi said. “But they need to be watched closely in the first 24 hours to make sure both calves get colostrum from the dam.”

Larson added the biggest concern with twin births is that both calves will not get adequate nutrition early on in life.

“I recommend separating the cow and her twins away from the rest of the herd so they can be closely monitored,” Larson said.

If the cow isn’t accepting both calves or she cannot produce enough milk to adequately nourish the twins, then it might be time to consider grafting the calf to another cow that has recently lost her calf or hand-raising one of the twins by bottle-feeding them, Larson said.

“Oftentimes twins are not born the same size and so one of them tends to be more rigorous than the other,” Larson said.

He also said producers need to make sure both calves are thriving.

“A calf that is thriving will get up and run around to play, while one that isn’t is slow to get up and just lacks energy,” Larson said.

To make it easier to monitor the twins, Bortoluzzi recommends putting the cows with twins in the same pasture as the first-calf heifers.

“By grouping the cows with twins in the heifer pasture, producers can easily make sure the twins are eating well and maintaining good health,” Bortoluzzi said.

OCCK, Inc. invites public to Transportation Week BBQ

Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Business Administration</a>&nbsp;is honoring two graduating seniors with awards for excellence and resilience.Maddie Rimmer,&nbsp;Overland Park,is the recipient of the&nbsp;Outstanding Graduating Senior Award,&nbsp;and Ethan Brown,&nbsp;Salina,&nbsp;is the recipient of the Resilient Senior Award.&nbsp;

The students will be recognized&nbsp;at the&nbsp;college's commencement&nbsp;ceremony and Senior Sendoff event.

Rimmer is majoring in finance with a minor in management and a certificate in data analytics.&nbsp;According to the Outstanding Senior Selection Committee of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council,&nbsp;she&nbsp;has demonstrated exceptional academic performance and involvement. As a leader, she has served as a pivotal figure in the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/success/student-organizations/cbaambassadors/" target="_blank">Business Ambassadors</a>&nbsp;organization, holding roles as both president and treasurer. She also served the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/gates-capital-management-cfa/finance-scholars/" target="_blank">Finance Scholars Program</a>&nbsp;as vice president of consulting and completed her student fellowship with the Center for Risk Management Education and Research program.

In addition to her leadership roles,&nbsp;Rimmer&nbsp;has showcased her financial aptitude through participation in multiple financial competitions, where she has demonstrated her skills and expertise.

"Maddie has consistently demonstrated deep involvement both inside and outside of the classroom,"&nbsp;said Jacqueline Varney, president&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Dean's Student Advisory Council&nbsp;in the business college.&nbsp;"She has represented the College of Business&nbsp;Administration&nbsp;across various channels&nbsp;—&nbsp;leading recruitment efforts, engaging with current students,&nbsp;and contributing to her career and the alumni network through her involvement in the Finance Scholars program. Having had the opportunity to personally connect with Maddie, I have been able to see her drive and dedication shine through all her endeavors. It is no surprise to me that she is being recognized as the outstanding senior for the College of Business&nbsp;Administration."

A graduate of Blue Valley High School,&nbsp;Rimmer is the daughter of&nbsp;Steve and Becky Rimmer.&nbsp;After graduation, she will be joining Deloitte Consulting as a strategy analyst in the Kansas City office.

The Resilient Senior Award&nbsp;recognizes a business student who displayed resilience in the face of challenges. As the awardee,&nbsp;Brown&nbsp;will have the honor of speaking at the senior breakfast before the commencement ceremonies. Brown is majoring in marketing with a leadership studies minor and certificates in nonprofit leadership, professional strategic selling, and business of sports and entertainment.

Brown's contributions to the&nbsp;K-State&nbsp;and Manhattan community are numerous, and his on-campus involvement includes roles as the 2023 Student Ambassador and member of the Student Alumni Board, K-State Alumni Association; Connected 'Cats even lead, Office of Engagement; Student Foundation vice president of campaign proceeds allocations, KSU Foundation; and campus access director, Student Governing Association. He is also part of the Menard Family Scholars Program and has participated in two education abroad experiences.

"Our world is built on mobility,&nbsp;and for those of us who don’t have the same degree of movement for whatever reason, it can be challenging to navigate,"&nbsp;said Olivia Law-DelRosso, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.&nbsp;"I have seen the incredible impact Ethan has had on campus. I'm thrilled he has won this award."

Brown is the son of&nbsp;Christopher&nbsp;Brown, M.D.,&nbsp;and Chrissy Brown of Salina.Following graduation,&nbsp;he&nbsp;will pursue a master's degree in&nbsp;higher&nbsp;education and&nbsp;student&nbsp;affairs from the University of Kansas.

As a leader, she has served as a pivotal figure in the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/success/student-organizations/cbaambassadors/" target="_blank">Business Ambassadors</a>&nbsp;organization, holding roles as both president and treasurer. She also served the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/gates-capital-management-cfa/finance-scholars/" target="_blank">Finance Scholars Program</a>&nbsp;as vice president of consulting and completed her student fellowship with the Center for Risk Management Education and Research program. Saline County Jail Bookings, May 9

Excitement is ramping up as Wildcat fans will soon get the opportunity to see their favorite student-athletes and coaches as part of the Kansas State Athletics 2024 Catbacker Tour.&nbsp;

Sponsored by Kansas Strong, the 2024 Catbacker Tour will kick off May 14 in Salina. The tour will be in town from 8-10 a.m. at the K-State Salina Student Life Center located at 2310 Centennial Road.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Next stops include Great Bend and Liberal before moving to Dodge City, Garden City, and Scott City on May 15, and then on to Colby and Hays on May 16. Head football coach Chris Klieman, as well as coaches and student-athletes from various sports, will be in attendance during the swing of Western Kansas.

Head men's basketball coach Jerome Tang, other sports' coaches and student-athletes will be a part of the second week of tours, beginning with Manhattan on May 20. Following stops in Hutchinson and Wichita on May 21, the tour will head to Chanute, Emporia and Kansas City on May 22 and end in Marysville, Seneca and Topeka on May 23.

The tour stops will have a fan-friendly atmosphere and feature mini-pep rallies, photo opportunities, and meet and greets with the guests. Willie Wildcat and members of the cheer team will also be in attendance. Make sure to follow K-State Athletics on social media platforms throughout the tour for more coverage.

2024 K-State Athletics Catbacker Tour to stop in Salina next week

The Salina Crossroads Marathon has 3,240&nbsp;runners registered from all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom and is quickly closing on last year’s registration total of 3402.&nbsp;The third annual Salina Crossroads Marathon will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 in downtown Salina&nbsp;and the planning committee has set a goal of 4000 registered runners for the 2024 race.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon was&nbsp;featured&nbsp;recently&nbsp;in Kansas! Magazine with a great article by Patricia E. Ackerman and&nbsp;photography by Tanner Colvin in volume 80-issue 3 for 2024.&nbsp;“The support we have received from local and state-wide media partners as well as running clubs across the United States has been amazing and is a key reason that the Salina Crossroads Marathon has become one of the largest marathon events in Kansas in just its third year,” said Co-Race Director Daniel Craig.&nbsp;

This year Salina Crossroads added the option to register as part of a team and that change has paid off with over 26 teams registered.&nbsp;The Salina Crossroads Marathon reaches out to over 600 running clubs in all 50 states, and this year, Team Take Down, an African American running club with members in all fifty states as well as other countries, will gather for their annual MeetUp event at the marathon in Salina.&nbsp;Team Take Down currently has 185&nbsp;runners registered&nbsp;and there are&nbsp;additional&nbsp;large teams coming from Kansas City Missouri, Tulsa Oklahoma, and Florida.&nbsp;

Salina Crossroads Marathon surpasses 3,000 registered runners from all 50 states

Salina Media Connection is having an open house on Thursday, May 9th at the Innovation Center located downstairs in The Temple. This will be a "Come and Go' event which&nbsp;will start at 4 p.m. and end at 7:00 p.m.

For most, imagining the behind-the-scenes of a television station or movie set is easy — bright, sweltering lights alongside teleprompters, glossed-up talent and boom mics hovering close by.

Behind-the-scenes at a radio station may be a little trickier to imagine, but for Shane McClintock, the view in the booth is the behind-the-scenes he's dreamed of since childhood.

"All the other kids would be outside playing, and if a radio was on, all I did was listen to it," McClintock said. "I would have just rather have stayed inside and acted like I was on the radio... I would read the newspaper for commercials and play music."

Today, McClintock programs and hosts 99KG, or in its official call letters, KSKG, which, in the most recent update on the <a href="https://tlr.nielsen.com/tlr/public/ratingsDisplay.do?method=loadRatingsForMarket">Nielsen Topline Ratings</a>, his station topped the charts for the tenth year in a row.

McClintock said that the official publication of those ratings stated that KSKG, or 99KG, hosts the "largest share to date" since the company began surveying the Salina, Manhattan market in 2007. Nielsen Topline Ratings published that information in January this year.

99KG Number One for New Country eventually became McClintock's stage for programming an engaging music lineup and high-quality commercials alongside bringing in the Bobby Bones Show.

The Bobby Bones Show is a well-known radio program featuring topics on popular country music and artists.&nbsp;

"It was an art that I felt comfortable in. I wasn't comfortable when I was younger in sports, but it [radio] was something that I was comfortable with and felt confident that I could do it," McClintock said.&nbsp;

McClintock's history with 99KG stretches back to his childhood. Growing up in Salina, 99KG was the station he often listened to and dreamed of sitting in its booth for programming someday.

Before the station topped the charts, 99KG's history goes back to the 1990s. 99KG initially played several genres of music before switching to a Top 40 Country Music Hits station in 1996.

However, 99KG's success started in 2013, after McClintock took over programming the station and became its host.

When McClintock arrived, only a small population of people in the north-central region listened to 99KG, while today, it's the number one station in the area.

"There's a lot of music, mornings, marketing... there's a lot&nbsp;of things&nbsp;that go into building winning radio stations," McClintock said.&nbsp;"It's not just&nbsp;flip&nbsp;it on and&nbsp;hope and pray."

One aspect McClintock focuses on is promotions that directly impact the community — local events, contests for trips across the United States and more.

McClintock uses community events like Dad for a Day and McClintock's ToyAThon to better connect with local Salinans and central Kansans.

Jerry Hinrikus, the general manager for the Eagle Communications Media Center in Salina, said these fundraisers and contests keep a radio station focused on its community.

"Getting involved in the community and having fundraising events, Summer Splash and different things local families and kids can attend," Hinrikus said. "That's where local radio wins."

McClintock saw 99KG's potential when he first discovered it as a child and set his sights on crafting a radio station that his community would love.

"It's the radio station I grew up listening to," McClintock said. "I knew the market without a doubt, and I'm 100% confident in what was missing in this market and radio."

Growing up, McClintock said he didn't have many opportunities to visit Salina's Monster Truck shows, see concerts on the Tony's Pizza Events Center stage or vacation to other states, so one thing he enjoys doing as a radio host is producing various contests that give local kids and families that opportunity.

Another large promotion by 99KG is the Dad for a Day event, where children who lack a steady father figure will join McClintock and a few other staff to visit the Kansas City Chiefs Arrowhead Stadium and the Royals Kauffman Stadium.

In the fall of 2023, McClintock programmed a contest for a trip to the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, which covered the entire cost of travel for the winning family.

"To think that I can give away a trip to someone, the idea of&nbsp;giving someone an opportunity&nbsp;to win a trip to New York City to take their kids to something that they may or may not be able to afford is the reason why I've put together promotions with the radio station that I have," McClintock said.&nbsp;

“Transforming barns through the BARN program will preserve historical structures and repurpose them into vibrant hubs for agritourism activities, all while bringing new life and economic opportunities into Kansas communities,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “By revitalizing these iconic buildings, we are honoring our state’s agricultural roots and planting seeds for future businesses to grow and prosper.”

The BARN grant program is designed to spur economic growth and help create memorable visitor experiences by preserving a significant aspect of Kansas’ architectural history. These grants are specifically designed to rescue iconic barns from likely demolition or collapse and rehabilitate them into spaces conducive for new or expanding agritourism businesses.

With almost 100 different kinds of boats – from kayaks to canoes to motorboats – many Kansans will&nbsp;be having&nbsp;a great time on the water this year. 

Governor Laura Kelly has declared May 18-24 Safe Boating Week in Kansas, and Safe Kids Kansas, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks want to remind families to take extra steps to keep kids safe out on the water.

Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among Kansas children. Wearing a life jacket improves your odds of surviving a boating accident by 80%. &nbsp;

In 2022, 75% of all fatal boating accident victims in the U.S. drowned, and of those who drowned, 85% were not wearing a life jacket.&nbsp;During National Safe Boating Week, we want to remind all parents of a few simple things they can do to keep their kids safe on a boat&nbsp;and&nbsp;that starts&nbsp;with wearing life jackets.

“Drowning can happen quickly and silently,” said Cherie Sage, State Coordinator for Safe Kids Kansas. “It’s important for children to wear life jackets when&nbsp;they are&nbsp;in or around open water and for adults&nbsp;to actively supervise children, giving them your full attention.”

Follow these safety tips to keep your family safe while boating:

Take a boating safety course.&nbsp;Gain valuable knowledge and on-water experience in a boating safety course with many options for novice to experienced boaters. Always wear a life jacket.&nbsp;Adults and children should always wear a properly fitted life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard while on boats or around open bodies of water. Children ages 12 and under are&nbsp;required by law&nbsp;to wear a life jacket at all times on any watercraft, including paddleboats and kayaks. Older children and adults should set a good safety example for everyone and wear their life jackets, too.

Supervise kids in and around&nbsp;water. When&nbsp;there are several adults&nbsp;present&nbsp;and&nbsp;children are swimming, use a Water Watcher card to designate an adult as the Water Watcher for a certain amount of time (such as 15-minute periods) to prevent lapses in supervision. Educate your children about swimming&nbsp;Every&nbsp;child is different, so enroll children in swimming lessons when you feel they are ready. Teach children skills such as how to tread water and float.&nbsp;Kids should only swim in areas designated for swimming. Teach children that swimming in open bodies of water&nbsp;is different than&nbsp;a swimming pool. They&nbsp;need to&nbsp;be aware of uneven surfaces, river currents, undertow and changing weather.

Elm Creek Road between Thompson Road and Halstead Road will be closed&nbsp;until May 10&nbsp;to replace a drainage structure.&nbsp;

Roads closed in Saline County for drainage structure replacements

Although the mightiest storms of the Great Plains missed the city of Salina, some residents still saw severe storm damage.&nbsp;

David Schwartztraub, a resident from the 200 block of South 11th Street, said through curtains of rain on Monday evening, he heard a loud crash and, after the storm passed, ventured outside and saw a large branch across his front porch awning.

"All of a sudden, everything just came crashing down," Schwartztraub said. "I had never seen anything like that. I was looking out the front door and couldn't see out the door with all the rain blowing around so hard."

After Schwartztraub assessed the damage to his home and found another large branch across his backyard fence, he viewed his neighbors and saw little or no storm damage at their houses.

Schwartztraub knew that no tornadoes hit the city, but the roar of the wind and rain made him feel like he was in the middle of a twister.

"Nothing [else] in this neighborhood was damaged," Schwartztraub said.

One of the two large branches that fell crashed across Schwartztraub's porch, snapped his flag pole in half, but missed the house's roof. The other fell across his fence to the backyard.
