The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by&nbsp;Richard T.&nbsp;Jackson, 18, Clay Center, was eastbound on U.S. 24 seven miles west of Clay Center. 

The pickup crossed over the center line, entered the westbound lane and struck a 2004 Toyota Sienna driven by&nbsp;Johnathan L.&nbsp;Wright, 47, Shawnee,&nbsp;head-on.

Two passenger in the Toyota Robert M.&nbsp;McCollum, 72 and Alma J. Wright, 79, both of Gardner were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp;Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

EMS transported&nbsp;Jackson to Salina Regional Health Center and two other passengers in Toyota Sharmen S.&nbsp;McCollum, 55, and Gary W. Wright, 80, both of Gardner to Stormont Vail. Jonathan Wright was not injured. Robert McCollum and Alma Wright were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Teen driver hospitalized in Salina after fatal head-on crash

Rolling Hills Zoo is deeply saddened to announce the passing of&nbsp;Gumu, the zoo’s cherished aardvark, who was born at the zoo.&nbsp;Gumu, a beloved member of the Rolling Hills Zoo family, was 18 years old, the upper range of the lifespan for his species. His presence will be greatly missed by both the zoo staff and the many visitors who had the opportunity to meet him.

In March,&nbsp;Gumu&nbsp;was diagnosed with cancer&nbsp;which was untreatable outside of palliative care. The zoo's dedicated veterinary and animal care teams&nbsp;assisted&nbsp;Gumu&nbsp;in&nbsp;living&nbsp;as comfortably as possible until his quality of life began to decline. Unfortunately, last week, the decision was made to humanely euthanize him, ensuring that he passed peacefully without further suffering.

Born on January 1, 2006, at Rolling Hills Zoo,&nbsp;Gumu&nbsp;was the offspring of Alice and Max, both longtime residents of the zoo. His caregivers had the privilege of watching him grow into a unique and spirited individual over the years.

“Working with&nbsp;Gumu&nbsp;and his mother Alice as a generational species here at the zoo has been a highlight of my career,” shared Head Keeper Devney Olson-Bowen. “Gumu&nbsp;had the biggest personality and loved food more than anything. He would instantly make you smile when he went outside to dig in the dirt or snow, or inside in the sawdust or hay. While most guests likely saw him sleeping, we saw his antics&nbsp;throughout the day.”

Keepers fondly remembered&nbsp;Gumu’s&nbsp;playful nature and his curious personality. “When&nbsp;Gumu&nbsp;wasn’t sleeping, he was usually on a mission,” shared&nbsp;one of his keepers. &nbsp;&nbsp;“Whether it&nbsp;was&nbsp;to get to his regular diet, a&nbsp;food enrichment, to go outside, or to explore a new scent or item that we’ve put in his exhibit. Honey was his absolute favorite ‘sweet treat,’ but he also loved raspberry, blackberry, and melon.”

Gumu&nbsp;was also known for his unusual sleeping positions, often curling up into a ball or lying on his back with his legs in the air. His antics never failed to bring a smile to the faces of those who cared for him.

“He was the sweetest ‘old man,’” added&nbsp;one of the keepers. “I honestly don’t know anyone who has worked with him that didn’t fall in love with his quirky features and wonderful&nbsp;personality. He will be greatly missed, always loved, and never forgotten by everyone whose lives he touched.”

As the staff at Rolling Hills Zoo mourn the loss of&nbsp;Gumu, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and cared for him. “The days will be a little bit dimmer without his ability to make us laugh and his charming character,” shared Olson-Bowen. “He will be missed more than anyone can imagine.”

Rolling Hills Zoo mourns the loss of beloved Aardvark

The Salina Downtown Lions Club will host its 66th Annual Public Barbecue on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Salina County 4-H Building, located at 900 E. Kenwood Drive. The event, sponsored by Hassman Termite and Pest Control, will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., offering attendees the option to dine in or carry out their meals.

Tickets for the event are available for $10 in advance from any 4-H Club member, Downtown Lions Club member, or by calling 785-825-1807. Tickets at the door will cost $12. 

Additionally, bulk meat will be available for purchase. The barbecue is being held across the street from the Tony’s Pizza Events Center parking lot in Kenwood Park.

Proceeds from the event will support the Central Kansas District 4-H Club, continuing a long-standing partnership between the Salina Downtown Lions Club and Saline County 4-H. The club, which has been active in the community for over 102 years, has sponsored local 4-H activities since 1925.

Funds raised will go towards youth activities in Saline County, including support for 4-H, youth baseball, music events, and the Lions Sight program. Over the past 25 years, the Salina Downtown Lions Club has contributed more than $367,000 to these efforts, with $16,400 donated in the last two years alone.

Agriculture and aviation are two of the biggest industries in Kansas, but it’s been rare for commodity farmers and commercial airlines to interact as partners. As sustainability moves from boardroom buzzword to real world applications, there’s a need for more conversation between the industries.

Kansas Farm Bureau recently facilitated some of that conversation between farmers in south-central Kansas and representatives from Delta Airlines centered largely around the recent push to produce more sustainable aviation fuel. Essentially, the grains and oilseeds farmers grow will be refined into jet fuel.

Sustainability has a wide variety of meanings depending on the context. For airlines, sustainability is a biofuel with a lower carbon footprint than traditional petroleum-derived propellant. For farmers, sustainability is keeping the land they farm productive so future generations can continue working it.

It’s logical two different industries would have different definitions for the same term. One is a little over 100 years old, while the other has been around for a few thousand years. It makes perfect sense for the upstart industry (relatively speaking) to learn from the much older one of what sustainability looks like.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to farming. Over visits to farms across just three counties in Kansas, airline officials were able to see firsthand just how different farms are. Many employed the same conservation-minded practices like no-till and cover crops that aim to boost soil health, but the practices were long-term investments in the land. A lower carbon footprint isn’t the goal, it’s merely a byproduct of good stewardship.

To their credit, Delta officials didn’t come to Kansas expecting to resolve all the issues surrounding sustainable aviation fuel, rather they showed up with an open mind and sought to better understand policy perspectives of growers in the region and experiences across the agricultural value chain.

They heard firsthand about opportunities and challenges to implementing conservation practices on farms. Farmers provided their experiences on topics like raising grain sorghum, using cover crops to increase soil health and for grazing, wheat planting, drought and minimum- or no-till practices.

Orville Wright covered 120 feet over the course of 12 seconds in the first powered flight of what’s now known as an airplane. An observer during that first flight could probably figure out a 747 is one of the results of that flight, but couldn’t comprehend the testing, innovation and change necessary to get from one to the other.

The same is true in agriculture. The plow, which may be the most important tool in settling Kansas, is not long for this world. Breaking generations of tradition isn’t easy and doesn’t always happen quickly, but I have no doubt Kansas farmers will be leaders in the coming evolution.

The conversation between agriculture and aviation is just getting started. It’s commendable the two industries are talking, trying to figure out how to best help each other thrive in the future. This was just the beginning of the conversation, and no one is quite sure where it will lead. One thing everyone knows: the sky’s the limit.

Ambassador Hotel demolition, fire station art, on Salina City Comm. Agenda Oct. 14

Salina is one of seven Kansas communities to host the Americans  Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition in 2025 and 2026. Based on an exhibition of the same name that is currently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and curated by Paul Chaat Smith (Comanche) and Cécile R. Ganteaume, Americans explores the ways American Indian images, names and stories have been part of the nation’s identity since before the country began.

<a href="https://americanindian.si.edu/americans/">The&nbsp;Americans&nbsp;exhibition</a> features photographs, hands-on interactives, objects, and videos that invite visitors to explore this history and representation of Native Americans in American culture. The&nbsp;<a href="https://americanindian.si.edu/visit/reopening-ny/">George Gustav Heye Center (GGHC)</a>&nbsp;in New York City houses exhibitions, research, educational activities, and performing arts programs. The&nbsp;<a href="https://americanindian.si.edu/explore/collections/crc/">Cultural Resources Center (CRC)</a>&nbsp;in Suitland, Maryland, houses the museum's collections as well as the conservation, repatriation, and digital imaging programs, and research facilities. The NMAI's off-site outreach efforts, often referred to as the "fourth museum," include websites,&nbsp;<a href="https://americanindian.si.edu/explore/exhibitions/traveling/">traveling exhibitions</a>, and community programs.

Since the passage of its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://americanindian.si.edu/sites/1/files/pdf/about/NMAIAct.pdf">enabling legislation in 1989</a>&nbsp;(<a target="_blank" href="https://americanindian.si.edu/sites/1/files/pdf/about/NMAI1996Amendment.pdf">amended in 1996</a>), the NMAI has been steadfastly committed to bringing Native voices to what the museum writes and presents, whether on-site at one of the three NMAI venues, through the museum's publications, or via the Internet. The NMAI is also dedicated to acting as a resource for the hemisphere's Native communities and to serving the greater public as an honest and thoughtful conduit to Native cultures—present and past—in all their richness, depth, and diversity.

Based on an exhibition of the same name that is currently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and curated by Paul Chaat Smith (Comanche) and Cécile R. Ganteaume, Americans explores the ways American Indian images, names and stories have been part of the nation’s identity since before the country began.<figure>

Kansas State University entomologist Jeff Whitworth adds another scary warning about spiders: “They’re watching you with multiple eyes and fangs made for sucking blood.”

But unlike the Addams Family of 1960s television fame, spiders are likely to be gone by Halloween.

Whitworth says four spider species common to Kansas are likely to be in hiding within the next few weeks.

Two species commonly found in the home that are of most concern to humans because of their venom – the brown recluse and black widow – are ready to go into winter hibernation. Whitworth said those two species are rarely seen from mid-October to mid-March.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/mf3133.pdf">brown recluse</a>&nbsp;is identified by a signature black line that resembles a violin on its back, with the neck of the violin pointing to the rear of the spider. The bite of a brown recluse releases a hemotoxin that affects a person’s blood cells. A bite from a brown recluse may require medical attention.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3346.pdf">adult female black widow</a>&nbsp;is more elegant looking, typically a very shiny black with a colorful, hourglass shaped mark on their abdomen. The bite of a black widow releases a neurotoxin that affects the nervous systems of humans and animals.

Two less-venomous spiders more common in farm fields or open areas include the orb spider and the garden spider.

The orb spider is typically a big, brown, round spider that weaves intricate webs.

“You will often see webbing, but not the spider,” Whitworth said. “The webbing catches insects, and then the spider comes out in the evening to feed on what they’ve caught” and repair the web, if needed.

Another common field spider, the garden spider, also is very large, and typically dark green or black and yellow with long legs. Farmers often run into garden spiders when walking between fields because they’ll use corn or sorghum or large weeds to build their webs, “and by this time of year, most spiders are at their largest and thus have constructed large webs for catching prey,” according to Whitworth.

But like the brown recluse and black widow, orb spiders and garden spiders are likely to be out of sight by the time the scariest holiday of the year rolls around.

There is still work to do, however, and the university’s supporters believe in that work, as they gifted the university more than $2 million during the first quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year. That means the university’s The Power of AND Campaign has now raised in excess of $42.5 million.&nbsp;

“It’s inspiring to see the support for KWU continue to grow,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Our work influences not only the lives of our students, but it builds up the community and makes Salina an even better place to be. We’re thankful that so many share this vision.”

The more than $2 million includes some $1 million in gifts, pledges and received estate plans for the endowment. Some of those funds are part of in excess of $1 million received in support of scholarships, as a portion of those are endowed, while the remainder of the funds are for annual scholarships. There were also gifts in support of the faculty development fund, the Everett Morgan Strength Training Center (KWU’s weight room), general athletic support, Music and the Community Resilience Hub, as well as unrestricted donations.&nbsp;

First quarter supporters have run the gamut, from local, state and federal foundations to corporate sponsors, grants and a significant estate gift. Numerous alumni and sponsors have joined the ranks, or increased their support, early in the fiscal year. While that list is extensive, a partial group includes Dr. Paul Ellison, Eric and Mollie Haberer, Dan and Jennifer Kieborz and family, Jerry and Margaret Norton, Mac Steele, Thomas White, Marla and Lee Biekman, Bob Meyer and Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;

Perhaps the largest project on the horizon is phase two of Coyote Village, KWU’s apartment-style residence halls. The university is in the planning stages for seven additional homes, each housing five students, and construction is scheduled to begin during the fall semester. Work continues on current projects with equipment installation and upgrades still possible in the Everett Morgan Strength Training Center and Sams Chapel. Donations continue to come in for both.&nbsp;

The Relay For Life of Saline County has successfully exceeded its 2024 fundraising goal, raising an impressive $50,158 to support cancer research and vital services provided by the American Cancer Society. The annual walk, held on June 22nd at Kansas Wesleyan University, saw the local community come together for a day filled with activities that offered hope and support for those impacted by cancer.

The volunteer-led event featured live music, guest speakers, a survivor celebration led by bagpipes, performances by local dance and twirling troupes, a silent auction, and a special dessert bar for cancer survivors and caregivers. One of the highlights of the event was the moving luminaria ceremony, which honored both cancer survivors and those lost to the disease.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who participated, donated, and volunteered to make this year’s Relay a success,” organizers said. Special recognition was given to key event sponsors, including Schwan’s, JRI Hospitality, Holm Automotive, Pinion, Iron Insurance Partners, and Norton, Wasserman, Jones &amp; Kelly. Sunflower Bank was also highlighted as the event’s Promise Sponsor.

By SALINA POST Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are investigating a residential burglary that occurred on October 12 in the 1200 block of East Magnolia Road in Salina.&nbsp; Officers were dispatched to the residence around 7:30 p.m. after a 62-year-old resident reported that unknown suspects had forcibly entered the home through a sliding door sometime between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The suspects stole various pieces of jewelry, including a gold ring with a center diamond surrounded by alternating rubies and diamonds, three strands of pearl necklaces, four to five plain gold chains, a Lapis blue ring, and other miscellaneous items. The total loss is estimated at around $10,000.

SPD is continuing its investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department.

The shows will take place on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Chapel, located at 1137 N Santa Fe.

 Tidal Wave Auto Spa, the nation’s fourth largest conveyor car wash company, hosted their 16th annual Charity Day event on Friday, September 20. UPDATED: Tidal Wave Auto Spa raises more than $500 for Salina Area United Way

The Salina Police Department (SPD) arrested 34-year-old Trevor Witt after an anonymous caller reported him for being involved with a minor.&nbsp;

At 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, SPD officers responded to the 100 block of North Santa Fe after receiving an anonymous report of a very young girl seen interacting with a large group of older individuals, prodominantly males.

"Officers went made contact with the female, and the concern was she was smoking and had some marks on her neck," Feldman said. "The girl initially tried to say she was 17 and gave a name which was not accurate. Officers were able to determine that she was 13 years old and she was a runaway from a foster care facility in Salina."

SPD took the 13-year-old girl into custody and learned that she had sexual contact with Witt.&nbsp;

"He had supplied her alcohol, tobacco, possibly some drugs," Feldman said. "He was taken into custody for two counts of rape, aggravated indecent liberties with the child, aggravated criminal sodomy, contributing to a child's misconduct, distribution of a stimulant, and providing tobacco products."

From October 14 through 18, Circle C Paving &amp; Construction of Goddard, Kansas, will continue the City of Salina’s annual pavement crack sealing project by sealing cracks in the following streets, weather permitting:

The work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. Access to properties within the work zones will be maintained at all times. "Road Work Ahead" signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is a crucial and cost-effective part of the City of Salina’s street repair program. Crack sealing helps prevent water from penetrating the pavement, reducing issues such as crack spreading, potholes, and complete pavement failure. The Department of Public Works aims to seal each asphalt street in Salina at least every seven years.

This is the eighth installment of the City of Salina’s 2024 Crack Seal maintenance project, with a total project cost of $498,000.

Pavement sealing work continues in Salina

Salina Post is proud to recognize Private First Class Drayke M. Webb for his outstanding achievements during his time at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego, California. Webb, who graduated from MCRD on September 13, served as a Squad Leader.

Webb's leadership qualities were further acknowledged. He graduated as Platoon 1043’s Honor Guide, a prestigious title awarded to the top recruit among his platoon of nearly 100.

A graduate of South High School in 2021, Webb previously attended Bennington Elementary and High School before transferring to South High for his final years of high school. Webb's mother, Mindy, said she is proud of his accomplishments, especially his unexpected emergence as a leader during boot camp.

"I was impressed that he was joining the Marines, but during school, he always did his own thing," Mindy said. "In that environment [the military] he just excelled and we are so proud of him. Those who serve in the armed forces are the elite. We are so grateful they go above and beyond to fight for us."

Webb is currently home in Salina on recruiter assistance but will soon return to Camp Pendleton in San Diego to continue his training.

When asked what quality she admires most about her son, Mindy said "courage."

"Especially the courage it took to join the Marines—a path that most people don’t have the strength to choose," Mindy said. "It takes a rare kind of bravery to willingly step into a role that demands sacrifice, discipline, and the willingness to face danger for the sake of others. His decision to become a Marine reflects a level of fearlessness and dedication that sets him apart, and it’s a source of deep pride for me."

🎙King in the Community — Rep. Clarke Sanders, incumbent seeking reelection for Kansas' 69th House District

The Project is inviting the public to join in the mission of gathering 59,000 cans of soup from Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, through Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025. A $30 cash donation allows for the purchase of 50 cans of soup.

Project Salina and the Souper Bowl of Hope play a crucial role in ensuring that the Salina community receives nutritious, high-quality food. Every cash donation makes a difference.

While the Souper Bowl of Hope and Project Salina are two distinct fundraisers, both are organized by the Project Salina board and support the same local agencies. However, they are managed through separate accounts.

Volunteers will be collecting cash and food donations at all three Salina Dillon’s locations during the following times:

Saturday, Jan. 25 (10 a.m.–6 p.m.) Sunday, Jan. 26 (1 p.m.–5 p.m.) Saturday, Feb. 1 (10 a.m.–6 p.m.) &nbsp;Sunday, Feb. 2 (1 p.m.–5 p.m.) Saturday, Feb. 8 (10 a.m.–6 p.m.)

Drop-Off Information for Businesses and Churches

Businesses or churches can deliver donated food items or cash donations to the warehouse located at 319 S. 5th St. (the old Consolidated Printed building) at the following times:

Saturday, Feb. 1 (3 p.m.–6 p.m.) &nbsp;Sunday, Feb. 2 (2 p.m.–5 p.m.) &nbsp;Saturday, Feb. 8 (3 p.m.–6 p.m.)

Please ensure that you know how many items you are donating and that checks are made out to Souper Bowl of Hope.
