Salina’s holiday season is getting a creative twist this year as the Center for Theatre Arts at Theatre Salina presents its first annual '12 Days of Christmas', featuring performances by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61568713568362">Iron Street Dance Company</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CenterForTheatreArts">Stage Door One Singers</a>. The event will be held on December 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The performances will spotlight some of Salina’s most talented young artists. Under the expert direction of Maggie Spicer Brown and Elizabeth-Ali Schade, the ensemble features performers who have collectively participated in more than 150 productions at Theatre Salina and area high schools.

Featuring beautiful dance pieces to songs like "Underneath the Tree" and "Carol of the Bells" as well as fun scenes that lead into musical performances of favorites like "Feliz Navidad" and "Swing into Christmas" and more.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, Dec. 15

Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article296570569.html">recently affirmed</a>&nbsp;that, with the Republican legislative majority&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/election/article294547689.html">even stronger</a>&nbsp;after the 2024 elections, the leadership will bring back the push to ban transgender surgery on those under 18 years old. The last effort to do so ended with a veto from Governor Laura Kelly and a veto-override attempt which failed by only two votes. So it’s reasonable, now that they have additional votes on their side, that the Republicans would try again.

Reasonable, that is, in terms of signaling. Is it reasonable in terms of substance?

The role of political signaling, as opposed to the usually unglamorous work of addressing policy substance, is a complicated one in democratic governance. It is not uncommon for voters to complain that those elected to represent them are spending their time on meaningless bills or resolutions that show their support for one cause or another, instead of getting down to the business of building actually substantive legislation. It’s a fair—and not inaccurate—complaint.

Yet I sympathize with legislators who operate in a nationalized media environment, whose funding so often depends upon major interest groups and organizations that usually care little for specific budget or policy matters, and instead are focused on creating media messages which exist primarily to rile up or placate key constituencies. A reasonable politician might well conclude that have to play the signaling game, if only to make sure they have the opportunity to also focus on the difficult matters that may concern them most.

That’s not to say that there aren’t members of the Republican super-majority in Topeka who, for a variety of reasons, may well be sincerely concerned—maybe even horrified—by the prospect of someone under the age of 18 receiving gender modification surgery, and see banning such as a necessary action in the name of public health or morality. I’m sure some fit that description.

But I suspect most of our legislators actually understand that they are crusading symbolically against an almost non-existent concern. It’s the same for illegal immigrants, who are&nbsp;<a href="https://nij.ojp.gov/topics/articles/undocumented-immigrant-offending-rate-lower-us-born-citizen-rate">far more law-abiding</a>&nbsp;than the rest of the population, yet every story about an undocumented resident who commits a crime will be shared over and over and over again.

Thanks to awards from the&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>, 21 Kansas State University students will conduct hands-on cancer research in the spring 2025 semester.

The center's Cancer Research Awards will provide the selected students with hands-on laboratory research experience that emphasizes the importance of ethical research practices and effectively communicating science to the public.

"The Cancer Research Awards allow students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, preparing them for success in their future careers," said Sherry Fleming, director of the Johnson Cancer Research Center. "These awardees represent some of the brightest minds at K-State and in Kansas, and we are confident they will excel in their chosen fields."

Each awardee receives $2,000 to support their research endeavors, enabling them to focus on laboratory work instead of non-academic employment. Additionally, $1,000 is allocated to each student for research supplies, enhancing their capacity to conduct impactful studies.

"The Cancer Research Award will help me explore my growing interest in research and veterinary medicine," said Ashley Najar, sophomore in animal sciences and industry,&nbsp;Shawnee. "I'm grateful to be working with Dr. Chieko Azuma and researching canine nasal tumors and the potential ways to reduce them. Through this research, I'll reach a better understanding of the disease and how it affects both canines and humans."

The Salina Area United Way is thrilled to announce the resounding success of its fourth annual Christmas event, Mistletoe Melodies Featuring HiFi Dueling Pianos, held on Friday, December 6, at Tumblweed LLC. 

With more than 400 attendees, the enchanting evening brought together music, laughter, and holiday cheer in support of the Salina Area United Way's 2024-2025 Campaign. The event raised an incredible $70,000 to benefit the Salina community.

Guests enjoyed a festive atmosphere filled with the sounds of HiFi Dueling Pianos and a special dinner performance by the local band, Everyday Lights. A delicious dinner and dessert catered by YaYa’s added to the night’s charm, along with engaging activities including photo opportunities with Salina Selfie Station, silent and live auctions, a 50-50 raffle, wine and whiskey pulls, and more.

 This year’s event raised significant funds that will directly support the Salina Area United Way’s programs, their 13 Funded Partners and seven Childcare Partners, strengthening programs that make a lasting impact in our community.

SAUW Mistletoe Melodies raises $70K to benefit Salina area community

Kansas State University will see more than 1,200 candidates for graduation this fall at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/">commencement&nbsp;ceremonies</a>&nbsp;set for Friday, Dec. 13, in Manhattan and Salina and Saturday, Dec. 14, in Manhattan.

Candidates from both the summer 2024 and fall 2024 semesters will be recognized. Ceremony information, including parking, accommodations will be available on the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/">K-State graduation website.</a>

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/graduation/"></a>Approximately 880 bachelor's degrees, 250 master's degrees and 80 doctorates will be awarded this fall. More than 50 students will be earning multiple degrees. The graduates-to-be also include nearly 280 students who are earning their degrees through a K-State Online program.

The Saline County Board of Commissioners has officially adopted its 2025 meeting schedule through <a href="https://pub-salinecounty.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=8661">Resolution 24-2414</a>. This resolution outlines regular meetings, work planning sessions, and study sessions aimed at ensuring transparent and consistent governance.

The Board will convene for regular meetings at 9 a.m. on select Tuesdays throughout the year, with key dates including January 7, February 4, March 4, and December 30. Work planning sessions will also be held at 8:30 a.m. before certain meetings, including February 4, April 1, and October 7. The Commission will also conduct study sessions on specific dates, such as January 28, March 18, and December 23.

Notably, the Board has scheduled breaks from meetings on several Tuesdays, including April 15, June 24, and November 11, due to holidays and key conferences. These dates are subject to change only if emergency sessions are required.

Saline County Board of Commissioners set 2025 meeting schedule

The holiday season is full of cheer, but it can also bring hidden dangers for our beloved pets. From festive foods to holiday decorations, there's plenty to watch out for.

Susan Nelson, clinical professor at Kansas State University's Veterinary Health Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has some tips to keep pets safe.

"Many animal-related emergency room visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given or by accident," Nelson said. "Some foods cause upset stomachs, some are poisonous and some can cause life-threatening obstructions."

Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis. Ham, gravy, butter-laden potatoes and buttered veggies should be kept out of reach from pets. Skin and dark meat from turkey and fat trimmings from meat can be harmful to animals.

"Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforation of the GI tract," Nelson said. "Especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to GI obstruction. Tooth breakage from chewing on them is possible as well."

Pet owners should exercise caution when it comes to certain foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. Items to avoid include chocolate, coffee and caffeinated drinks, as well as raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks and foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder. Additionally, citrus plant stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, along with dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages, can pose serious health risks.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are secured can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and are tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to GI obstruction and/or perforations."

Food is not the only thing that could be harmful to pets this holiday season.

"Ingestion of holiday plants can cause anywhere from minor GI irritation to life-threatening toxicity," Nelson said. "Plants to keep out of reach include mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar. Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to our pets. The ASPCA contains lists of more plants that are toxic, or not, to dogs and cats."

While certain holiday plants can cause varying levels of toxicity, the decorations and wrapping materials that fill our homes can also pose significant dangers if pets try to eat them.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, with many decorations and wrapping items having the potential to cause harm if ingested," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

Holiday festivities might be fun for us but can be stressful for pets.

"Pets that are anxious around strangers or crowds should be kept in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite treat or toy," Nelson said. "Even if your pet likes company, they should still have access to a room or crate located in a quiet place where your guests won't bother them. For pets that become particularly stressed by company, speak to your veterinarian about prescribing them anxiolytics to decrease their anxiety until your company has left."

It is important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip, in case they should slip through the door and run away as guests enter and leave. Make sure microchips have the most up-to-date contact information.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, immediately call your veterinarian, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 for advice.

K-State vet offers holiday pet safety tips

Crimestoppers On Saturday, November 30, 2024, at about 3:00 p.m.&nbsp;a male subject described to be 6’1 to 6’3” and weighing between 250 to 280 pounds entered the Pit Stop Convenience Store, 647 W. Cloud, Salina, KS. The suspect told the female clerk he needed the money from the register, and she told him no. The suspect grabbed the register, and the clerk attempted to stop the suspect from taking it but was unsuccessful. The suspect fled from the store, with the register, and ran to the north. The subject wore a mask and gloves.

The holiday celebration promises fun for all ages. Attendees are encouraged to wear their coziest pajamas and bring their appetites for a night of Christmas-themed activities. 

Pancakes by <a href="https://www.chriscakes.com/">Chris Cakes</a>: Enjoy a delicious pancake dinner served up fresh. Hot Chocolate Station: Warm up with a festive cup of hot chocolate. Craft Stations: Create holiday-themed crafts perfect for the season.

Mayor Longbine expressed his excitement about hosting the event.

Salina Mayor’s Christmas Pancakes & Pajama Party set for Friday

The sounds of big brass instruments will once again ring out at the Salina Central Mall as the 12th annual Salina TubaChristmas concert returns on Dec. 14, 2024. This free event will feature tubas and euphoniums performing holiday favorites in rich, four-part harmony.

The concert begins at 12:30 p.m. in the mall’s food court, featuring a community brass ensemble led by retired KWU music instructor Steven Leuth. The event brings together brass musicians from across central Kansas and beyond, including high school students, college musicians, and experienced adult players.

Salina’s TubaChristmas is part of a long-standing national tradition founded more than 50 years ago by professional tuba player Harvey Phillips and his instructor, William J. Bell, from Indiana University.

The first TUBACHRISTMAS® was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS® was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980.

“We’ve held it for 12 years here in Salina,” said retired Salina Symphony tuba player and event organizer Ron McWilliams. “Last year, we had 32 tubas and euphoniums playing and we’re excited to do it again.”

When asked, "Why tubas and not clarinets or saxaphones?" McWilliams said it's thanks to the rich, resonant tones of tubas and euphoniums&nbsp;

“It’s a deep, mellow sound, kind of like a men’s quartet,” McWilliams said. “When you’re in a big place like the food court, it feels like you’re sitting in the middle of a church organ.”

McWilliams said part of the fun with TubaChristmas is getting to make music with longtime friends like Leuth.

"Steven is a well-known entertainer. He plays with the group The Blades. He's taught at KWU and Bennington. He's our director and has been a friend of mine for 50-plus years," McWilliams said. "We met at college at Fort Hays State University."

TubaChristmas is a nationwide event, and with Salina positioned at the "Crossroads of America," McWilliams said tuba and euphonium players from across the state are coming to town.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Last year we had someone from Oklahoma City. We have had tuba players from south of Wichita come up on a regular basis," McWilliams said. "We have also had several players from Concordia and players from all over central Kansas come into this and look forward to it."

High school and adult tuba and euphonium players are encouraged to participate. Registration is $10, with music books available for $15. Participants should bring a music stand and arrive at the Friendship Center’s upper level, 746 Comanche Ave., between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Rehearsal runs from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

“It’s a lot of fun,” McWilliams said. “We rehearse in the morning and perform for an hour. It’s a great way for musicians to come together and share their love of music."

The Salina Area Christmas Brass Choir, a dynamic ensemble of up to 70 community musicians, including trumpets, trombones, tubas, French horns, baritones, and percussionists KWU Dean Krantzler and Hannah Applequist, will perform a holiday concert on Dec. 21 at the same location in the Salina Central Mall.

This concert is also free to the public.&nbsp;
