By SALINA POST Salina Police Department (SPD) officers arrested a 16-year-old girl early Thursday morning following a high-speed pursuit.

At 1:40 a.m. on Oct. 10, SPD officers were dispatched to the 300 block of East Claflin Avenue for a report of a burglary involving a 2017 Dodge Caravan. The vehicle’s owner, a 24-year-old man, said he was alerted by the alarm and saw one suspect inside his vehicle and two others standing outside. When the suspects fled, the victim chased them for a block before they escaped in a black Toyota Tacoma.

SPD Cpt. James Feldman said officers quickly located the suspect vehicle in the area of Norton Street and East Claflin Avenue, but the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit through east-central Salina, with speeds ranging from 20 to 70 mph.&nbsp; Officers deployed stop sticks at several locations, but the Tacoma continued driving after running over them.&nbsp;The suspect vehicle eventually came to a stop in the 3100 block of Royal Drive, where police found only the 16-year-old driver inside.

Officers later determined that the Tacoma, valued at $2,000, had been stolen from the 300 block of Russell. The owner had left the key in the vehicle due to a transmission issue.

The 16-year-old was charged with fleeing and eluding, felony theft, burglary of a vehicle, attempted theft, and several driving infractions.&nbsp; Feldman said SPD continues its investigation and is working to identify two other suspects involved in the incident.

With the general election less than a month away, and the deadline to register to vote less than a week away, here are some steps to develop a plan to vote.&nbsp;

Kansans have until Tuesday, Oct. 15, to register to vote. Voter registration closes 21 days before Election Day.&nbsp;

Kansans can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdor.ks.gov/apps/voterreg/" target="_blank">register online</a>&nbsp;with the Secretary of State and Department of Revenue,&nbsp;<a href="https://sos.ks.gov/forms/elections/voterregistration.pdf" target="_blank">mail in their registration</a>&nbsp;in English or Spanish to their local county election office — as long as it’s postmarked by Oct. 15 — or register in person at their local county election office.&nbsp;

If already signed up, Kansas can check on their voter registration status at the&nbsp;<a href="https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/voterview" target="_blank">Secretary of State’s website</a>.&nbsp;

If a voter is currently 17 but will be 18 before the day of the general election, Nov. 5, they are able to register.&nbsp;

Anyone living in Kansas can register to vote in Kansas elections – regardless of how long they’ve lived in the state. Kansans with federal or state felony convictions are not allowed to vote and should not register.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kssos.org/forms/elections/av1.pdf" target="_blank">Mail-in ballots applications</a>&nbsp;should be postmarked and sent to county election officials by Nov. 5, Election Day. Voters must sign the outside of the envelope, so that voting officials can verify their signature. The deadline to submit an advance voting by mail application is Oct. 29. Mail-in ballots can be tracked on the&nbsp;<a href="https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/voterview" target="_blank">Secretary of State’s website</a>.&nbsp;

Any Kansas voters living out of state should request a mail-in ballot. Ballots will be sent to voters on Oct. 16. They should mail the filled out ballot back to their county election officials.&nbsp;

Check with your County Clerk to see when early voting begins. Saline County early voting begins Oct. 21.

In-person advance voting begins on Oct. 16 in select counties. All counties must offer advance in-person voting no later than Oct. 29, one week before Election Day.

Voters should contact their county election officials for details on where and when their county offers advance in person voting, and the Secretary of State’s office will release a list of all counties offering advance in person voting closer to Oct. 16.

Photo identification is required for all in-person voting. Advance voting will close at noon on Nov. 4.

Voters must vote at the polling location associated with their address on their registration. Voters can check their polling locations through&nbsp;<a href="https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/VoterView" target="_blank">the Secretary of State website</a>.

Upon arrival, voters are expected to show photo identification. They can bring a driver’s license – which can be issued by another state as long as voters are registered in Kansas — a U.S. passport, military ID, Native American tribal ID card, a government employee badge, a student identification card from a postsecondary institution in Kansas, a concealed carry license – again, issued by any state as long as voters are registered in Kansas — or a public assistance identification card.

Voters can check what their ballot will look like through&nbsp;<a href="https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/VoterView" target="_blank">the Secretary of State website</a>.&nbsp;

Many candidates and their policies have been covered by the Kansas Reflector, and can be found on the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/category/elections/election-2024/">election 2024 tab.</a>&nbsp;An updated candidate list, including their contact information, can be found on the&nbsp;<a href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/elections_upcoming_candidate.aspx" target="_blank">Secretary of State website</a>.

Voting locations are to be open as early as 6 a.m., and they may close as late as 8 p.m. All polling locations must be open for at least 12 consecutive hours. If a voter is in line before the polling location closes and there is a line, all voters in line when a polling location closes are entitled to vote.&nbsp;

Each polling place must be accessible for all voters with disabilities. Finney, Ford, Grant, Haskell and Seward Counties must all provide alternative language assistance.&nbsp;

The ACLU of Kansas will provide a statewide, nonpartisan election protection hotline. If a voter believes their voting rights have been violated, they can call the ACLU’s hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE.

Know these steps if you plan to vote in Kansas this election season

By SALINA POST The Salina Public Library is set to host a Community Nonprofit Showcase on Friday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, highlighting the resources and services offered by more than 25 local nonprofit organizations.

The event, which will take place at the library’s main location at 301 W. Elm St., aims to connect community members with support services available in the Salina area.

Participating organizations include Catholic Charities, Salina Area United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Salina Rescue Mission, among others. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the various services these nonprofits provide, ranging from housing assistance and mental health support to family resources and youth programs.

In conjunction with the showcase, a hygiene drive will be held, offering free essential items such as body wash, shampoo, conditioner, feminine hygiene products, towels, winter clothing, and more. Salina Family Healthcare will also have its Mobile Unit on-site to provide health screenings and flu shots.

The event is being held in partnership with the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

Kansas Highway Patrol It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas with fall harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements.

“As the busy farming season is underway, each traveler in Kansas needs to be more aware of increased farm implement and truck traffic,” said Captain Candice Breshears. “In Kansas, we have many trucks exiting and entering the roadways at any given time. Traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution.”

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there.

Although most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, the majority of their focus must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you are passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right or allowing you to pass.

Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns, so allow it plenty of room and time to turn and remain aware of any potential driveway or field they may be turning into.

Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet, or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip, or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. They understand you are being delayed and will move over at the first safe location available.

Think of the slow-moving vehicle emblem as a warning to adjust your speed.

When you see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, immediately slow down. While the emblems are visible from a long distance, it is difficult to judge the speed at which you are closing in on the vehicle, especially at night.

When you are not focused solely on the road, you increase your chances of a collision, especially if you should come upon a slow-moving farm vehicle.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Oct. 10

The Friends of the River Foundation is excited to announce its annual Fall Fix-Up event, set to take place on Saturday, October 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

 The Fall Fix-Up is a chance for Salina residents to come together to beautify and care for various areas of our city. Volunteers are needed for a range of activities at multiple locations around Salina. Snacks and necessary tools will be provided to participants. 

Volunteers are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate for outdoor work and that can get dirty. Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

At Ashby House, located at 143 S. 8th St., volunteers will participate in campus clean-up, painting, and furniture removal. The City of Salina, at 336 S. Santa Fe Ave., The Temple parking lot, will have volunteers placing storm drain medallions.

The&nbsp; Community Housing Development Organization, (CHDO) located at 1802 Roberts, will need help with fence replacement and yard work, while at 936 S. 10th St., volunteers will assist with tree removal and yard work.

Friends of the River will meet at the YMCA parking lot to remove invasive plants and trash at the Smoky Hill River. In the North Town District, there will be clean-up efforts at 1020 W. North, focusing on landscaping at Mounted Patrol &amp; Rescue Squad.

 Additional projects in the area include cleaning and painting a sculpture base on artwork at 715 N. 9th St., and organizing book storage for Little Libraries and cleaning and painting another sculpture base on artwork at 346 N. 9th St.

Volunteers will also work downtown at 112-114 S. Santa Fe Ave. (Borolo Grille back patio &amp; Strand Plaza), cleaning planter pots, adding mulch, tying ribbons on grass, cleaning around planters and benches, and removing trash from dumpster corrals.

 The Salina Food Bank at 255 S. Chicago will have volunteers working on landscaping and pantry shelf cleaning. At the Salina Rescue Mission, located at 1716 Summers Road, volunteers will apply weather protector to wood in the prayer garden, touch up painting, clean flower beds, and prep for a vegetable garden. 

There will also be cleaning and painting at The Temple, located at 336 S. Santa Fe Ave. (North red door). Lastly, the City of Salina will offer Free Landfill Day at 4292 S. Burma Rd. from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Items must be properly secured to take advantage of the offer.

The Friends of the River Foundation invites everyone in the community to participate in this meaningful event. It’s a great opportunity to meet neighbors, make a positive impact, and show pride in our beautiful city.

Falls are a leading cause of injuries among older adults. "Falls are often preventable," said Lisa Newman, Family and Community Wellness Extension Agent with Central Kansas Extension District. "By making simple changes to your home and lifestyle, you can significantly reduce your risk."

Key Fall Prevention Tips from the National Council on Aging: 

Remove tripping hazards like loose rugs and cords. 

Install grab bars in bathrooms and near stairs. 

Improve lighting in hallways and stairways. 

Discuss potential side effects and interactions with your doctor. 

Consider using a medication organizer to stay on track. 

Strength training and balance exercises can improve your stability. 

Consider joining a falls prevention class or program. 

Ensure your vision is up-to-date and corrected as needed. 

Got a four-legged furry friend in your home? Studies have shown that pets, particularly dogs, can increase the risk of falling due to various factors. Here are some additional tips to help keep you and Fido safe. 

Keep walkways clear: Ensure pets don't obstruct your path and make sure their toys and supplies are stored outside of walkways.

Mind the paws: Watch where you step to avoid stepping on or tripping over your pet.

NEWMAN: Don't Fall for it — tips to prevent trips, falls

The Salina Police Department (SPD) investigated an alleged threat against Salina Central High School after a threatening message was sent to the school's social media page on Tuesday night.&nbsp;

According to SPD Cpt. James Feldman, the message was sent to the school's page at approximately 9 p.m.&nbsp; 

"The threat, which was sent via Instagram, claimed that an individual would 'shoot up the school' on Wednesday morning around 10 a.m.," Feldman said.

Feldman said USD 305 officials immediately contacted the school resource officer and SPD to investigate. SPD launched an investigation, working through the night with Instagram and Google's assistance to trace the origin of the threat. 

The message was tracked to Ravenna, Ohio, a town south of Cleveland. Wednesday morning, Ravenna Police Department officers were able to identify and take the suspect, who is a minor, into custody. 

Feldman said the suspect is a high school student previously involved in a relationship with a Salina Central student. The suspect allegedly made the threat after the couple broke up.

To ensure the safety of students and staff, additional officers were deployed at Salina Central on Monday morning. According to the SPD, two patrol officers were stationed at the school alongside the School Resource Officer, who normally provides security for both Central High and other schools in the district.

Ravenna Police Department detective Dustin Svab told Salina Post that the 15-year-old subject was arrested at his home in Ravenna at 6 a.m. this morning. Svab said the 15-year-old is a lifelong Ohio resident.&nbsp;

Rep. Mann gathers aviation leaders, stakeholders for 2024 Aviation Summit

Melissa Schrag began serving as the new Central Kansas District Family Resource Management Agent on September 30. The Central Kansas District serves the citizens of Ottawa and Saline Counties. Schrag’s primary office is in Salina.

Schrag earned her bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from Western Kentucky University. She has most recently been employed as an Adult Development and Aging Agent for K-State Research and Extension in Sedgwick County.

Family Resource Management agents develop and deliver educational programming to support financially successful families and communities. Programs may include, but are not limited to, financial planning; budgeting and record keeping; consumer credit; and taxpayer education. Shrag has an extensive background with SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansans) as well as general health care navigation and veteran well-being.

Local extension faculty are jointly employed in a partnership between K-State Research and Extension, headquartered on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, and the local extension board.

Schrag begins role as Central Kansas District Extension Agent

The Salina Police Department announced earlier this week that it has concluded its investigation into the incident that occurred in the weight room at Salina South Middle School. USD 305 continues its investigation.

The Salina South Middle School teacher who allegedly sat on a student in the school’s weight room is currently on administrative leave.

The USD 305 School Board voted during its Tuesday evening meeting on whether or not they should terminate Preston McCorkle's contract. The 39-year-old educator is allowed a hearing, where school board members will make their final decision. Board members directed McCorkle to recieve written notice of the board's decision.

The Saline County Attorney previously announced that McCorkle will not face criminal charges in connection with the incident, deeming it “playful in nature” with no criminal intent.

The Salina Police Department has completed its investigation of an incident that occurred at South Middle School on September 6, 2024. It was reported a 13-year-old male student was bench pressing in the school weight room. When the student finished the exercise the teacher, a 39-year-old male, sat on him.

Shortly thereafter, the student passed out and rolled off the bench striking his head on a portion of the bench resulting in a cut to his head.

Upon completing interviews of all those present during the incident, the case was forwarded to Salina Municipal Court who requested the case be reviewed by the Saline County Attorney’s Office.

The Saline County Attorney declined prosecution based on all witness statements indicating they did not feel it met the threshold for filing criminal charges.

The County Attorney determined based on the prevailing witness opinions, that most felt the incident was playful. Therefore they could not establish criminal intent.

The district’s investigation is separate and wholly independent of the SPD. Jennifer Camien, communications director at USD 305 said the teacher reamins on administrative leave at this time and will remain so through final employment determination by the board.&nbsp;&nbsp;

USD 305 and the Salina Police Department (SPD) are actively investigating a report of a student injury that occurred during class in a weight room at Salina South Middle School.&nbsp;

According to a statement issued by USD 305 Communications Director Jennifer Camien, "The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority. We are committed to conducting a thorough review."

Salina Public Schools (SPS) Human Resources is actively investigating the report. According to school officials the student received medical care under the supervision of parents/guardians.&nbsp;

"Due to privacy laws regarding personnel matters, there are things we cannot report publicly at this time," Camien said.&nbsp;

In accordance with district procedures, the teacher involved has been placed on administrative leave.&nbsp;

"We want the SPS community to know it is our goal to provide a safe environment. Student safety and education remain the district’s top priorities," a statement from USD 305 reads.&nbsp;

The Salina Police Department has been made aware the incident and officers are actively investigating to determine if any criminal acts were committed.

Born to Freya, one of the Zoo's Highland cows, Axel's birth was made possible through artificial insemination. His name, meaning "man of peace," reflects his calm yet curious personality.

Axel has already won the hearts of staff and visitors alike with his sweet nature and bold, trusting disposition. At just a few weeks old, he is already showing signs of curiosity, imitating the behaviors of his mother, Freya, and Valkyrae, the herd’s other female Highland cow, as he begins mouthing leaves and hay.

Despite being born six weeks early&nbsp;—&nbsp;Highland calf gestation typically ranges from 277 to 290 days&nbsp;—&nbsp;Axel has been thriving. He weighed just 25.13 lbs.&nbsp;at birth but is now a healthy 41 lbs.and growing exceptionally well. Playful and full of energy, Axel is often spotted engaging in "zoomies," running around with his legs bucking in the air, or sticking out his tongue. Visitors might also see him lounging in the shade on warmer days or basking in the sun when it’s cooler, often near the guest viewing area.

Currently, Freya and Axel are separated from Valkyrae, but they’ve had some supervised interaction and can often be seen resting near each other along the shared fencing. The Zoo's animal care team is working closely with Axel, beginning early training to desensitize him to touch in preparation for halter training. This training will make future veterinary care, such as vaccines, hoof maintenance, and grooming, easier and less stressful for Axel.

Rolling Hills Zoo is excited to introduce Axel to the community, and visitors are encouraged to come and meet this charming new addition&nbsp;during Saturday’s Pumpkin&nbsp;PaZOOla&nbsp;and the Zoo’s 25thAnniversary celebration, with a special Highland cow Keeper Encounter at 10 a.m. that morning. &nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, Oct. 9

On Tuesday, October 8, a memorial service was held at Sacred Heart Cathedral to honor the life and service of Salina Police Department (SPD) K-9 Officer Tyrann, who passed away following an accidental fall on September 18, 2024. 

Ty was an active and faithful public servant, serving the SPD since February 2021. The ceremony, attended by law enforcement, K-9 units, community members, and public officials, reflected the significant role K-9 officers have within police work.

During his time with SPD, Tyrann apprehended 13 suspects, tracked and located 12 suspects, conducted 14 article searches, five building searches and 11 recovered firearms. In addition, Ty located 7.13 pounds of methamphetamine, 2.85 ounces of cocaine, 12.1 grams of mushrooms, 2,488 dosages of Fentanyl, 18.1 grams of Heroin and 62.22 pounds of marijuana. The service began with a solemn procession of K-9 officers and their handlers from the surrounding area. Tyrann's former fellow K-9 officers' wagging tongues and panting breaths filled the Sacred Heart Cathedral sanctuary. Handlers and K-9 officers were allowed to pay their personal respects to Ty.&nbsp;

Father Schmeidler of Sacred Heart Cathedral,&nbsp;<a href="https://shcathedral.com/about-us/directions">118 N. Ninth Street Salina</a>, offered an opening prayer, asking for comfort and healing for the Salina Police Department and the community during this time of loss, while also celebrating Ty's life.

KBI Special Agent Austin Baker delivered the eulogy, recounting Tyrann's years of service and noting Ty's courage and commitment to his duties. Baker reflected on how K-9s like Tyrann are more than just working animals; they are partners who serve as vital components of police work.&nbsp;

"Tyrann was more than just a K-9 officer. He was a partner, confidant, steadfast companion and member of our family," Baker said. "Together, we could face anything, knowing our purpose was to serve and protect. Ty did so with unmatched loyalty and courage."

Baker also shared that Ty was named after former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu.&nbsp;

SPD K-9 Officer Chandler, Tyrann's second handler, shared a deeply personal tribute, reflecting on their unique bond and partnership in the field. Chandler said he deeply appreciates the Salina community for keeping SPD and his family in their thoughts and prayers during this time. 

Salina Police Chief C.J. Wise expressed gratitude for the community's ongoing support and to Sacred Heart for hosting the event to memorialize Ty.&nbsp;

"I want to thank our department. We have some of the best men and women that I have ever had the pleasure to work with," Wise said. "One of the big things that sticks out to me with this department is resiliency."

Wise continued saying the job of a police officer is not easy, and there are peaks and valleys. He closed his remarks in prayer.

"Dear heavenly Father, we thank you for this beautiful day. Help us to always remember that we are here to serve you," Wise prayed. "Bless all our families and our department and help us through the peaks and valleys. No matter what we are always here to serve. Bless and keep us walking in integrity to do the next right thing."

 Chief Wise emphasized K-9 officers' critical role in ensuring public safety and the immense contribution Tyrann made during his time with the department.

The ceremony concluded outside the cathedral with a series of ceremonial honors. Local piper Terry Ferguson played bagpipes, filling the autumn air with a somber melody of "Amazing Grace" followed by Salina Central High School Freshman Dominic Brosi performing taps on the trumpet.&nbsp;

 The service ended with a traditional last radio call, a final salute to K-9 Officer Tyrann's service. Tyrann's memory will remain a lasting symbol of loyalty, service, and protection within the Salina Police Department and the wider community.
