Woman nearly loses $6,000 after coming in contact with "bad actors," claiming employees from established companies.
According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Tuesday a 74-year old woman reported she discovered on her credit card statements, multiple transactions between February 10 and March 4.
The transactions appeared to be from Apple, which were a total of $140.
The woman made contact with the credit card company and had her account locked. Shortly after, she received a message on her phone that claimed to be from "Apple Support."
Afterwards, she called the number from the message and got in contact with a male individual who identified himself as a employee from Apple. He said her phone and computer had been hacked.
He then advised her that "child porn" had been downloaded on her devices and in order solve the problem, he transferred her over to an individual with Sunflower Bank security.
This individual then said she needed to withdraw over $3,000 in cash from her savings and checkings account.
The woman then went to Sunflower Bank in Salina and after discussions with employees, her account was then locked. As a result, she called SPD to report the scam.
SPD is reminding the public that if you see any of these transactions that were not made by you, the credit card company will handle it and to not click on any suspicious links.
If you have a concern about a message claiming to be from a company, research the number of the company itself to confirm its validity.
Contact your local law enforcement or your bank if you come across this issue.
