Residents and visitors are gearing up for the Gypsum Flea Market and town-wide flea market and garage sale event this Friday and Saturday. Gypsum, Kansas will be the place to find great bargains and visit one of Kansas' hidden gem communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Flea Market, located near Exit 14, 512 Maple St, Gypsum, will feature at least six vendors offering a diverse selection of items, including housewares, furniture, clothing, and model cars. 

Hours for the Flea Market are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Additionally, K4 Garage is hosting its own sales nearby.

One of the local highlights is COOP’s 5% discount on dog food, along with soft drinks available for purchase during the event. For those with a sweet tooth, across from the Flea Market, vendors will be offering homemade goodies such as brownies, cinnamon rolls, and muffins.

The Gypsum Flea Market isn't the only sale going on. Travel the streets of Gypsum to discover other local garage sales. Parking is available along the street near the market and sales locations.

Gypsum’s sense of community and small-town charm will be on full display this weekend. Allison Lewis, a resident of Gypsum said she moved to town two years ago and loves the community. 

"It's a really a wholesome community. We really care about our fellow community members," Lewis said. "We've done multiple benefits for people in community who are struggling. We're all friendly.&nbsp; I love living here. It's so quiet people don't bother you. It's small town living, and I love it."

Those interested in enjoying local food can also stop by Exit 14, which will have some of the best All-American food and homemade pies in the area available during the event.&nbsp;

On Wednesday Tarik Skubal allowed just three hits over five innings for his 17th win as the streaking Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 to move within a half game of a playoff spot with 10 games remaining.

Riley Greene hit a go-ahead home run as the Tigers won their fourth straight and ninth in the last 11 games. With the series sweep, Detroit won for the 25th time in 35 games to move within a half game of Minnesota for the third AL wild-card spot.

The Royals still hold a game and a half lead over the Twins but with Detroit in hot pursuit, will need to turn things around in their final nine games.

Wednesday was a great day for Kansas Wesleyan who opened conference play in three sports with a trio of big wins.

For the Coyote volleyball team that came in the form of a triangular sweep, defeating Mission and Sterling in three sets back to back,

Meanwhile on the pitch, the Coyote women’s soccer team collected their first win, shutting out York 2-0 in the conference opener.

The men’s soccer team would do the same, blanking York 2-0 in Nebraska for a crucial win to start conference play

And finally, speaking of men’s soccer earlier this week K-dub’s Mika Wernicke was named KCAC defensive player of the week.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 19

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for Sundowner West Mobile Home Park - public water supply system located in Saline County. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a broken water line resulting in low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory. &nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from the Sundowner West Mobile Home Park indicated no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.   &nbsp;

According to a release from the KDHE customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

According to Sundowner residents, Waterwise Enterprises has been sending out updates to residents, not Scott Kolling who owns the water rights at Sundowner.

The advisory took effect on September 14 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of water line break resulting in low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.

Sundowner was placed under a do-not-drink advisory back in Aug. for elevated manganese levels in the water.&nbsp;

Manganese is currently unregulated at the state level according to the KDHE, but federal health advisory limits do apply. 

Too much manganese can increase the risk of health problems, the KDHE said in its Aug. 29 release, particularly for infants under 6 months old. Infants are more at risk than older children and adults because their brains and bodies are quickly developing. Formula-fed infants get enough manganese from formula to meet their dietary needs. Infants exposed to manganese over 300 ug/L may experience learning or behavioral problems.

On Aug. 29 the KDHE advised residents to not boil or freeze the water. The release said the following, "Boiling, freezing, or letting water stand does not reduce manganese. Boiling can increase levels of manganese because manganese remains behind when the water evaporates."

Michelle Weis, Saline County Emergency Management director said The KDHE conducted water tests in late August which revealed manganese levels below health advisory limits, making it safe to boil.

SPD officers responded to 2125 North Ninth Street in Salina at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a 74-year-old Colorado man reported being scammed out of $4,700.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, the victim was approached by an individual who invited him to participate in a 3 Card Monte game, claiming that ten others were involved, each contributing the same amount of money.&nbsp; The man initially put in $200 and won the first round. Encouraged by the win, he retrieved $4,500 from his vehicle and handed it, along with the original $200, to the suspect.&nbsp; The suspect and several other individuals then fled the scene with the money.

The suspect is described as a white male, possibly driving a red Mercury van. There is no available video footage of the incident, and the victim was passing through Salina at the time, having stopped for gas.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department.

On Tuesday, Kansas Wesleyan head baseball coach Bill Neale was named 2024 American Baseball Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.

The honor recognizes Neale for his work during the 2024 season that saw the Coyotes finish with a program-best 48-12 record including a 32-4 KCAC record, a win in the NAIA's Shreveport Opening Round and their first appearance in the NAIA World Series.

K-Dub won the KCAC title for the second consecutive season and Neale was chosen as Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. He has a 311-214 record as the Coyotes' coach and has been an ABCA member for 20 years.

Tuesday also saw the Kansas City Chiefs add Kareem Hunt to their practice squad to help replace Isiah Pacheco, who is expected to miss at least 6 weeks on the IR

Hunt, who was released by the Chiefs in December of 2018 following an incident in which he pushed and kicked a woman in a Cleveland hotel, will&nbsp;join Carson Steele, Samaje Perine, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who has also missed time this season, in a thinning backfield.

And finally, a broken-bat 10th inning single for Austin Meadows gave the Tigers a narrow 3-1 victory over the Royals on Tuesday. Kansas City returns to Kaufman for the series finale tonight at 6:40

KWU reveals schedule for Homecoming 2024

Salina South High School’s annual homecoming parade is set to take place tonight, beginning at Equity Bank on Santa Fe Avenue at 6:30 p.m. The parade will head south on Santa Fe, then turn east onto Crawford Street, ending at the Salina Stadium.

Following the parade, a pep rally will begin at 7:00 p.m. where the homecoming king and queen candidates will be introduced. This year’s queen candidates are Tamia Cheeks, Bethany Hicklin, Kamryn Watts, Sadie Xaysongkham, and Macy Yost, while the king candidates are Erik Franco, Sean Iselin, Carson Wellbrock, Jace Humphrey, and Luke Matto.

Tamia Cheeks is the daughter of Dr. Brandon Jamal Cheeks and Dr. Ralita Cheeks. Throughout high school, she has participated in basketball, volleyball, track and field, student council, Kilt Krew, Relay for Life, Black Student Union, Paw Mart, and the Belonging Committee. Outside of school, she enjoys painting, arts and crafts, and babysitting. Tamia plans to major in graphic design with a minor in art and a second language and is considering pursuing a sport in college.

Bethany Hicklin, daughter of Dean and Cherise Hicklin, has been involved in cheerleading, track &amp; field, Link Crew, Relay for Life, the Belonging Committee, HOSA, National Honors Society, and FCA leadership. She spends her free time with her dogs, working as a CNA, reading the Bible, and pole vaulting. Bethany plans to attend the University of Kansas and major in chemistry.

Kamryn Watts, daughter of Tonya and Cleveland Watts, has participated in band, soccer, Relay for Life, and has served as a manager for the boys' soccer team. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, napping with her dog Luke, and shopping. Kamryn plans to attend Kansas State University to major in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Sadie Xaysongkham, daughter of Kam and Lindsey Xaysongkham, has been active in volleyball, softball, basketball, Kilt Krew, National Honor Society, Relay for Life, and FCA. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and dog, as well as working at Scooters. Sadie plans to attend Fort Hays State University to study radiology.

Macy Yost is the daughter of Brian and Tami Yost. She has participated in basketball, softball, volleyball, Link Crew, Writing Center, Kilt Krew, National Honors Society, HOSA, and Relay for Life. Macy is also an altar server at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and works as a CNA at Pinnacle Park Nursing Home. She plans to attend Kansas State University and pursue a degree in the medical field.

Among the king candidates, Erik Franco, son of Jorge and Guadalupe Franco, has participated in football, track, and student council. He spends his free time working out, hanging out with friends, and eating. Erik plans to major in accounting but has not yet chosen a college.

Sean Iselin, son of Max and Jody Craddock-Iselin, has been active in football, swimming, track, and student council. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing pickleball and disc golf, working out, and fishing. Sean plans to study dental hygiene but is undecided on his school.

Carson Wellbrock, son of Brett and Kelly Wellbrock, has participated in soccer, the STEM Center, Link Crew, and National Honors Society. He works as a trainer at Chipotle and spends time with friends. Carson plans to attend Kansas University and major in chemical engineering.

Jace Humphrey, son of Amy Lauer and Lauren Humphrey, has participated in basketball, baseball, Kilt Krew, and National Honors Society. He enjoys spending time with family, golfing or disc golfing with friends, and watching movies. Jace plans to play sports in college and pursue a career as a physical therapist.

Luke Matto, son of Russ Matto and Heather Moravek, has been involved in soccer, student council, and has achieved Honor Roll throughout his high school years. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing with his cat Boobear, volunteering in the community, and spending time with Kamryn. Luke plans to play soccer and study computer system administration at an undecided college.

National Recovery Month, observed every September, has become a cornerstone in promoting awareness, understanding, and support for those struggling with substance use disorders and mental health challenges. This annual observance plays a crucial role in public health by highlighting the importance of recovery and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.

In 1989, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched National Recovery Month to increase public awareness surrounding mental health and addiction recovery. The initiative aimed to provide those in recovery a time to honor and celebrate their success stories while illustrating to those still dealing with substance use disorders that living in recovery is possible.

Over the years, National Recovery Month has grown in scope and significance. It has become a platform to promote evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, recognize the work of service providers and recovery community members, and reinforce the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health.

Recovery Month's importance in public health cannot be overstated. It serves multiple crucial functions:

Raising Awareness: The observance educates the public about substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, helping to reduce stigma and misconceptions.

Promoting Treatment: Recovery Month encourages those struggling to seek help by showcasing the effectiveness of treatment and recovery services.

Celebrating Success: It provides a platform to celebrate the gains made by those in recovery, much like we celebrate improvements in other health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.

Fostering Community Support: Recovery Month brings together thousands of prevention, treatment, and recovery programs nationwide, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

The need for Recovery Month has only grown more pressing over time. Since the late 1990s, deaths due to addiction have continued to increase. According to recent data, Kansas has experienced a concerning rise in drug-related overdose deaths. Particularly those involving opioids. In 2021, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported over 600 drug-related overdose deaths in the state. Approximately half of these fatalities were attributed to synthetic opioids like illicit fentanyl, highlighting the growing impact of this potent drug on public health in Kansas.

The rate of drug overdose deaths in Kansas has seen a dramatic increase in recent years, nearly tripling with the last few years. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for enhanced prevention and intervention efforts across the state. City of Salina The City of Salina is pleased to announce that the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill has reopened and resumed normal operations following a temporary closure due to a power outage caused by lightning during yesterday’s thunderstorm.

Due to lightning that occurred during the thunderstorm this morning, Sept. 17, the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill is closed until further notice.&nbsp;

A power outage that resulted from lightning has caused computer systems and the scale house to be inoperable. &nbsp; Staff is working to resolve the issues as soon as possible. The public will be advised when the landfill will re-open as soon as systems are restored.

Trash collection by all service providers may be delayed until the landfill re-opens.&nbsp;

On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Isiah Pacheco, who was taken out of Sunday's game with an apparent injury, will miss 6-8 weeks with a fractured fibula.

The Chiefs will place the star running back on IR, but Pacheco is expected to return later this season.

The Chiefs, who face the Falcons next week on Sunday Night Football, are bringing in former favorite Kareem Hunt for a visit. If signed, Hunt would join Carson Steele, Samaje Perine, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who has also missed time this season, in a thinning backfield.

On Monday night Colt Keith hit a two-run homer, Matt Vierling had three hits while driving in the go-ahead run, and the Detroit Tigers rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 17

Salina Police Department officers are investigating a vehicle theft that took place on Friday at the Walgreens on Broadway Avenue in Salina.&nbsp;

According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Captain James Feldman, a 75-year-old woman had left her blue 2012 Hyundai Sonata running with the keys inside when the theft occurred just after 10 p.m. in the 700 block of South Broadway Avenue.&nbsp;

"The 75 year old had stopped her vehicle in the Walgreens parking lot, got out to make contact with someone, left her vehicle running with keys in it and a female suspect entered and took her blue 2012 blue Hyundai Sonata," Feldman said.&nbsp;

The vehicle, which bears California license plate number 6UZB539, has not yet been recovered. The value of the vehicle is estimated at $12,000.

Officers were able to identify the suspect through video surveillance and have submitted an affidavit to the county attorney.

"No warrant has been issued. Just depending on the county attorney when we'll get that," Feldman said.&nbsp;

 </figure> By NATE KING&nbsp; Salina PostSalina Police Department officers are investigating a vehicle theft that took place on Friday at the Walgreens on Broadway Avenue in Salina.&nbsp;According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Captain James Feldman, a 75-year-old woman had left her blue 2012 Hyundai Sonata running with the keys inside when the theft occurred just after 10 p.m. in the 700 block of South Broadway Avenue.&nbsp;"The 75 year old had stopped her vehicle in the Walgreens parking lot, got out to make contact with someone, left her vehicle running with keys in it and a female suspect entered and took her blue 2012 blue Hyundai Sonata," Feldman said.&nbsp;The vehicle, which bears California license plate number 6UZB539, has not yet been recovered. The value of the vehicle is estimated at $12,000.Officers were able to identify the suspect through video surveillance and have submitted an affidavit to the county attorney."No warrant has been issued.  </figure>By NATE KING Salina PostA 37-year-old Salina man was arrested on Friday after he allegedly made alarming statements about plans to "shoot up a school" while standing in line at a local Casey's convenience store. At approximately 8 a.m. on Sept. 13 Salina Police Department (SPD) officers responded to Casey's at 725 West Schilling Road after a concerned customer called to report a man standing in line making concerning statements."The reporting party indicated that they were in the store waiting in line when the suspect allegedly stated that he was running late and had plans to shoot up a school, adding that, 'people were gonna die,'" said SPD Captain James Feldman.Officers quickly arrived on the scene and located the suspect, identified as Johnny Baldwin, of Salina. No weapons were found at the scene, and Baldwin did not attempt to flee. He was taken into custody without incident.Baldwin is currently facing a count of criminal threat.Police urge the community to remain vigilant and report any concerning behavior they see or hear. SPD Feldman thanked the citizen for making the call.
