Birger Sandzén Memorial Art Gallery

LINDSBORG - Lawrence, Kansas, based sculptor Mark Cowardin will be doing a “chit chat” at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 2 p.m. The talk is a part of his Tallgrass Artist Residency and is free and open to the public.&nbsp;

Cowardin’s work examines the complicated, sometimes troubling and always compelling intersection between humans and the natural world. At the core is a keen awareness of a personal connection to the delicate environs of which he speaks. Much of the work begins with the observation of the absurd, illuminating the extreme beauty that ironically exists in some of humankind's' most damaging examples of consumption.

Mark Cowardin is a father, husband, artist, and educator. He received an MFA in sculpture from the University of Arizona and a BFA from the University of Kansas. His work is included in numerous private and public collections including the John Michael Kohler Art Center, Kohler Corporation, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and Rockhurst University.

The Tallgrass Artist Residency is a program of the Kansas Arts Commission and is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Sandzen Gallery hosts 'chit chat' with artist from Lawrence, KS 

MARION COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 6p.m. Saturday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Lincoln&nbsp;Nautilus  SUV driven by Ronald D. Ludwig, 92, Florence, was southbound on Nighthawk Road at U.S. 50 in Peabody.&nbsp; The driver did not yield at the stop sign. The SUV traveled into the intersection. An eastbound 2024 Freightliner Semi driven by&nbsp; Dennis E. Smith, 35, Nampa, Idaho, struck the SUV.

A passenger in the SUV identified as Dorothy F.&nbsp;Conyers was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Jost Funeral Home.&nbsp; EMS transported Ludwig to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.&nbsp; The semi driver was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

LINDSBORG - Bethany College is pleased to announce the appointment of Kurt Siklar as Assistant Professor of Business.

 An experienced professional with nearly 25 years of background in international logistics and supply chain management, he brings a unique combination of practical industry knowledge and a deep passion for education to his new role.

Siklar’s career includes experience at various organizations, from a small export merchant firm and a mid-sized high-tech manufacturer to a large exporting paper mill, where he oversaw overseas shipments of about twenty thousand ocean containers annually as Export Transportation Manager. His varied professional background, including roles as International Operations Manager, has given him a thorough understanding of global business operations.

A naturalized U.S. citizen since the early 1990s, Siklar has lived in five different states across the country due to his career, which has further expanded his perspective on business and culture. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Management, an M.B.A. in Business Management, and an M.A. in International Management Studies, and he is currently completing his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program at Wichita State University.

Siklar’s dedication to education became clear early in his career. While still working full-time in the industry, he served as an adjunct instructor for twenty years, teaching international business courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, following his initial experience with onsite instruction at a community college. This extensive teaching background, combined with his&nbsp;participation in various international business roundtables and export advisory boards, strengthened his commitment to nurturing the next generation of global business leaders. 

In 2017, Siklar moved to full-time teaching, embracing what he calls his true passion: sharing his real-world knowledge and fostering academic growth in higher education.

“We are thrilled to welcome Professor Siklar to Bethany College,” said Angie Martin, Associate Professor of Accounting and Undergraduate Business Coordinator. “His extensive experience in international business, marketing, and data analytics, combined with his passion for teaching, will greatly enhance our program. Outside of his professional and academic pursuits, Siklar enjoys traveling, exploring the arts, reading, and following sports, particularly soccer and track and field.

Quality assessments are based on objective measures developed from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s (BCBSA) partnership with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

These Blue Distinction Center programs help consumers find both quality and value for their specialty care needs, while also encouraging health care professionals to improve the overall delivery of care nationwide.

Only providers that meet nationally established quality measures will be considered for designation as both a Blue Distinction Center Spine Surgery and a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, which include:

According to SPD on Friday, June 27th between 5:00 am and 1:00 pm, an alleged burglary occurred at a home on the 200 block of N. West Place. A victim living at the home reported that about '15 firearms were stolen.' Police stated that the firearms missing included several Walther brand handguns, a vintage British bolt action rifle and&nbsp;several other rifles and handguns.

Total loss was estimated to be around $9,000.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on July 11, 2025, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Man arrested for an alleged assault on a motel employee in Salina

A Salina woman calls police after she was on the verge of a scam.&nbsp;

According to the Salina Police Department on Thursday, July 10th a 73-year old woman reported about an attempted scam.

She stated she was trying to access her bank account via iPad, but was not able to do so. She then called her bank and they told her the issue was probably due to 'pop-up ads' and to download Google Chrome onto her device. The woman then did what the bank told her and received a&nbsp;pop-up claiming to be from Apple that stated 'she had been hacked' and to 'call the attached phone number,' which she did.

Furthermore after the woman called the number, she got in touch with someone telling her that IP address had been 'hacked by people in other countries.' The caller requested she state her customer service number on the back of her bank debit card, and that they would contact them to connect them to her.

Subsequently, the woman then got in contact with a man who claimed 'to be with her bank.' According to police, the man was able to reveal her bank account information and told the woman there were 'several charges on her account' and a 'pre-approved loan up to $10,000.' The man then advised the woman he could 'stop the charges, but not the loan' which was supposedly going to used for the 'subscription of a website.'

The woman then ended the call with the man and she began to receive text messages stating the 'FDIC was trying to contact her, to answer their call and to not avoid the situation.' She then went to her bank and told bank employees what has happening and changed her account number with the bank.

Police stated the woman did not provide the scammers with any money. After further investigation, the phone number used by the scammers revealed they were associated with other similar scam calls throughout the country.&nbsp;

Police disclosed the scam number as (747) 320-9903.

The US National Weather Service Wichita, KS has announced that rain and storms are beginning to move east into central Kansas as of 9:45 pm, late Thursday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service Wichita, KS, the strongest storms will be capable of producing up to '60 mph winds and quarter size hail.

UPDATE: Storms moving towards Central Kansas late Thursday evening

This is day 11 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Despite early drought, uneven stands and losses to wheat streak mosaic virus, some farmers are reporting better than expected yields, with test weights and protein levels starting strong before tapering off due to late rains. Overall, the 2025 season has been an improvement over recent years.

Stan Remington, CEO of Frontier Ag, described this year’s wheat harvest as average overall, though results varied across their trade territory, which stretches from the Colorado border to Ogallah along I-70, and from the Nebraska line south to Ransom and Utica along Highway 4. With harvest now about 90 percent complete in their territory, Remington noted that the 2025 season stands out as above average when compared to the past few years.

In the northwest corner of the state, yields came in a little lower than expected. Fields north of Highway 24 also struggled, with several producers reporting below-average performance. Meanwhile, the Ness County area saw a stronger crop. As with most years, weather conditions made all the difference.

One of the bigger challenges this year came from wheat streak mosaic virus, which showed up more frequently along the I-70 corridor. These areas saw some of the most disappointing harvest results across Frontier Ag’s footprint, with Oakley and locations to the east experiencing the most severe impact from the virus. The presence of the virus in concentrated pockets dragged down yields.

Protein levels were also varied across the region. Weather conditions earlier in the growing season took a toll on quality in some areas. In addition, timing of spring rains played a key role. Fields that missed those critical windows saw reduced performance. Scattered showers during harvest also caused occasional delays, slowing progress in some locations.

Brian Linin, a farmer from Goodland, reports that harvest began on July 1 and his crew has about 10 days left. Linin, who farms alongside his dad and son, says their wheat is better than it looked, averaging above 50 bushels per acre so far, much better than last year and slightly above average.&nbsp;

Last fall’s drought conditions forced the Linins to redrill some fields in early November, a decision that significantly improved both stand establishment and yields. In fact, fields drilled later in the season are outperforming the earlier-emerging wheat across the area.

Test weights have been strong, ranging from 58 to 61.5 pounds per bushel, while protein levels are above average, running between 13.5 and 14 percent. Linin reported that drought was the biggest challenge this season, adding, “If we had received rain a month earlier, yields would be so much better.”

“Wheat is an excellent crop for this area,” said Linin, emphasizing that it fits well into their rotation. The stubble left behind greatly benefits the soil and improves the subsequent crop, and with decent yields, wheat can be a good cash crop.

In Lane County, farmer Ron Suppes, who grows hard white wheat, says he’s about 98 percent done with harvest and is working to finish up the last bit between rain showers. He brought in his first load about two weeks ago.

Suppes says recent rains have knocked down test weights, which started out about 61 to 63 pounds per bushel but have since dropped to 57 to 58 pounds. Protein levels have also dropped, starting out at 12 to 12.5 percent and are now sitting closer to 11 percent.

He says one of the biggest challenges this season started last fall, when wheat was planted into very dry soil. That led to uneven stands and staggered maturity across his fields, making harvest more complicated. Suppes planted KS Big Bow, KS Silverado and KS Snow Fox this year, and says all three have held up well despite the season’s challenges.

Day 11: Kansas Wheat Harvest report

ABILENE - The Abilene Police Department (APD) arrested a male teenager after he was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle and believed to be connected to other crimes.

According to APD on Tuesday, July 8th, the police department received multiple reports of damaged and vehicle break-ins that took place within downtown Abilene. The following day (Wednesday, July 9th), an officer conducted a traffic stop on a white Nissan Rogue in downtown at around 4:20 am. The driver of the Nissan stopped and as the officer was approaching the vehicle, the driver drove away.

A vehicle pursuit began but shortly after, the driver lost control and wrecked near the intersections of Northwest 14th and North Cedar St.&nbsp;

The driver was identified as a 14-year boy and was taken into custody by APD without incident. It was determined that the Nissan was stolen.

After further investigation, APD believed that the teenager is responsible for the alleged crimes that were reported on Tuesday. He was placed in Juvenile Detention and is facing requested charges that include:

Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Burglary, Criminal Damage to Property, and Flee and Elude.

A Lincoln County native and U.S. Army Veteran has produced and is on tour showing a documentary, that is meant help solve the problem of veteran suicide.

"Saving 22" a documentary by Gary Otte, who is on tour going across Kansas is showcasing stories of veterans who fight daily mental battles, after their years of service for the country. This Sunday, July 13th Otte will show his documentary, 'Saving 22' at VFW Post 1432 on 1108&nbsp;W. Crawford St.&nbsp;

Doors open at 1:00 pm and the documentary will show at 2:00 pm. Admission&nbsp;is $10 and all proceeds will benefit towards U.S. Veteran's overall life and health. Networks of healthcare professionals will be present during the event as veterans or families of veterans will get a chance to seek professional help for themselves or loved ones.

According to Otte, the mission of this documentary and tour is to bring community leaders, nonprofits, veterans and veterans' loved ones to create a network offering of help and hope. Otte emphasizes that community/togetherness is important in problem solving and helping eliminate veteran suicide.

"Alone we lose, together we eliminate veteran suicide," said Otte.

TOPEKA - Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland today announced the Department of Commerce has awarded $4.1 million through the Community Service Tax Credit Program (CSP) to support significant fundraising efforts for 30 non-profit organizations across the state.

“Strong, vibrant communities are what draw new businesses, visitors and potential residents to Kansas,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said.&nbsp;“CSP allows locally led initiatives to attract additional capital support – and further expand the economic opportunities in their communities.”

The Community Service Tax Credit Program provides an opportunity for non-profit organizations and public healthcare entities to improve their ability to undertake major capital campaigns involving community service, non-governmental crime prevention, youth apprenticeship and technical training, and healthcare services.

Under the program, the state authorizes nonprofit organizations to offer tax credits to donors that make contributions towards approved projects. Organizations in rural areas with populations less than 15,000 can receive a 70% credit, while communities with more than 15,000 population can receive a 50% credit.
