On Tuesday afternoon, Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a vehicle fire on U.S.-81 near the junction with Interstate 70.&nbsp;

At 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Saline County Sheriff's Office received a call about an SUV engulfed in flames. Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said the vehicle's driver reported experiencing vehicle electrical issues before it caught fire.

"He was driving northbound on U.S. 81 and had some issues with the lights inside the car," Soldan said. "Then it quit running and started to smoke. He pulled over to the side. The car ended up being a total loss. It burned to the ground."

Michael Jacquart, 21, of Salina, and his passenger, a 19-year-old, of Kanopolis, both escaped the vehicle before it caught fire and were unharmed. 

Saline County Rural Fire District Seven subdued the blaze and allowed deputies to look closer at the charred frame of Jacquart's 2014 Toyota Rav 4.&nbsp;

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Salina Post will update this article as new information becomes available.&nbsp;

Salina man and passenger unharmed after highway vehicle fire

The inaugural Kansas Landowner Conference took place in 2023, helping landowners removed from agriculture learn more about managing their properties and developing relationships with tenants.

This year, K-State Research and Extension farm economist Robin Reid said event coordinators added a day to the conference due to positive feedback from past attendees.

The conference is set for Oct. 10-11 at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

“We had a great turnout at the first conference,” she said. “Previously, it was all in one day. We have found since then that there are many issues that landowners want to learn more about, so we expanded it to two days, giving participants more availability to desired information.”

“We know that this is smack dab in the middle of harvest for some people,” said Ashlee Westerhold, K-State director of the Office of Farm and Ranch Transition. “However, our target audience are those who own Kansas land but are not operating the land themselves.”

Reid added, “A demographic that we really want to experience this conference are those who did not necessarily grow up on the farm or those who inherited a farm and do not know where to start on how to handle being a landowner and working with a tenant.”

Due to the recent downturn in the farm economy, Reid said this year’s event will include more breakout sessions around topics that will “impact every Kansas landowner’s bottom line.”

“For crop-share landlords that do their grain marketing, we have an awesome session on how to put together a marketing plan, navigate crop insurance and select government support programs,” she said.

“Some of the other sessions revolve around components of a well-written lease, leasing rates and how to effectively negotiate with tenants.”

Additional breakout sessions happening during the 2024 Kansas Landowner Conference on Oct. 10 include:

Wind and Solar Leases, with Kansas Farm Bureau’s Wendee Grady – 1:30 p.m.

Climate and Carbon Credits, with K-State’s Micah Cameron-Harp – 1:30 p.m. Hunting leases, with K-State wildlife specialist Drew Ricketts – 2:30 p.m. &nbsp;Charitable Strategies in Agriculture, with K-State Foundation senior director of gift planning Darci Cain – 2:30 p.m.

Reid said landowners on the fence about participating should strongly consider it because industry experts will be presenting on the topics they receive the most questions about.

“The agricultural economics department gets information requests all the time about things like ‘What is the going rate for pasture rental in my area?’, ‘What are the legal implications of renting?’ and ‘What should I have in a written lease?’” she said.

“Our attendees will be able to answer those questions after the conference, feel comfortable with that information and know the people to contact if they want to learn more,” Westerhold said.

Currently, the early-bird cost of attendance is $350 per person, or $650 for two business partners. Westerhold said prices will increase after Sept. 15.

“At the 2024 conference, we are offering a business partner discount rate because we know a lot of our attendees are couples, siblings and parents/children, so having both people there to experience this event is something we wanted to encourage,” she said.

Kansas Landowner Conference 2024 schedule

Officers with the Salina Police Department (SPD) are investigating a burglary that occurred between August 30 and September 3 in the 1000 block of Brock Avenue, resulting in the theft of two paint sprayers.

"It was reported that unknown subjects entered a construction trailer and stole two paint sprayers, a red Titan 440 and a Graco Quick Shot paint sprayer," Feldman said.

The Titan was valued at $2,000 and the Craco CO was valued at $1,500 for a&nbsp; total loss of $3,500. Feldman said there was there was no evidence of a forced entry.

SPD continues its investigation and is seeking any information related to the incident.&nbsp;

SPD investigating another construction site burglary

RILEY COUNTY —Officers with the Riley County Police Department are investigating a Saline County man for alleged child sex crimes.

Just after 3:30p.m. on Tuesday, police arrested 38-year-old Evan Volker of Assaria, Kansas, in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road on a warrant for rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

On August 31, authorities in Saline County arrested Volker after a warrant/National Crime Information Center hit.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Volker is being held on a $50,000 bond&nbsp;

On Tuesday Kansas Football was officially ranked No. 19 in the week two Associated Press Poll and No. 20 in the &nbsp;Coaches Poll.

This is Kansas’ earliest ranking in the regular season since being ranked&nbsp;No. 14 on Sept. 2, 2008. Kansas opened the season at No. 22 in the AP poll and No. 24 in the Coaches Poll, marking the first time Kansas has been ranked in both major polls entering the season since 2008.

The ranking comes after Kansas won its season opener for the fourth straight season, defeating Lindenwood 48-3 to start the year 1-0. Kansas compiled 530 yards of offense, including 331 rushing yards and seven total touchdowns.

Tuesday also say 9-hole hitter Brayan Rocchio drive in four runs and the Cleveland Guardians beat Kansas City 7-1 Tuesday night, extending the Royals’ losing streak to a season-high seven.

Since tying Cleveland for the AL Central lead on Aug. 27, the Royals have dropped 5.5 games behind the Guardians, who have won five of six. Kansas City maintained a 4.5game lead for the final AL wild card.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — September 4

Michelle Coats, Mobility Manager for North Central Kansas and Daniel Craig, Cancer Outreach Coordinator at Tammy Walker Cancer Center, presented at the Kansas Local Food Summit in Wichita on August 28 on efforts in Saline County to leverage funding to address food bank access and safety at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. 

Their presentation highlighted grant funded initiatives that expanded the community garden, funded site plan development, solar lighting, car and bike parking improvements, and sidewalks connecting to the local business corridor and public transportation.

Craig said events like the Kansas Local Foods Summit allows organizations, like Live Well Saline County, to network and share ideas.&nbsp;

"Events like this provide the opportunity for us to share with professionals across the state the work that we're doing, and we also get to learn from other communities and see the types of projects that they're working on, and if there's opportunities to partner," Craig said.&nbsp;

The summit also gives organizations a platform to reach potential funders.&nbsp; "There's a lot of local and statewide funders that attend events like this, and so it's great for them to hear the types of work that we're doing, and so I think just creating partnerships and potential collaborations is a great opportunity," Craig said.&nbsp;

K-State Research and Extension with support from many state agencies including the Kansas Health Foundation, From The Land of Kansas, North Central SARE, and Wichita State University Environmental Finance Center put on the Kansas Local Food Summit. It was attended by local producers, public health professionals, city/county staff members, university staff members, and farmer’s market vendors from the across the state of Kansas.

The Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank community garden was revitalized through a project that began in 2017. Dane G. Hansen Foundation and the Greater Salina Community Foundation held a series of “Strategic Doing” meetings that guided Saline County residents through a quick and sophisticated process of prioritizing, planning and implementing (or “doing”) community improvement projects. 

Local foods was one of the top priorities identified and revitalization of the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank community garden was the project selected. A Local Foods planning committee worked with the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank to draw up plans for the revitalized community garden and through a series of grants and sponsorships from over 20 agencies.

 The project was completed in 2021 and additional enhancements to the garden continue to be made. The Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank currently has five handicapped accessible garden beds, 27-community garden raised beds, a children’s garden for neighborhood kids, and a Master Gardener’s section raising produce for the Food Bank &amp; running vegetable trails for K-State Extension.

Following the completion of the community garden revitalization program Live Well Saline County, a local health and wellness coalition, received a four-year $500,000 Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant initiative from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. Tammy Walker Cancer Center was the designated fiscal agent for the grant and Daniel Craig who was the lead grant writer was selected to be the project manager.

Live Well Saline County worked with the Pathways to A Healthy Kansas technical assistance providers and through a series of community surveys identified enhancing safety and access at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank as the priority project for the grant. The Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank conducted interviews with clients and three projects emerged based on that feedback. 

The first was development of a site plan and addition of solar lighting that was supported through a $45,288 implementation grant. The second project was a sidewalk that connects the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank to the Broadway business corridor including links to two City Go Bus stops that was supported through a $100,000 implementation grant and additional matching funding by the City of Salina. 

The third project which will be starting soon is the addition of 12 additional parking spaces and six bike racks which was supported by a $100,000 implementation grant and matching funding from several sponsors and donors. In total $245,288 of the Pathways funding was allocated to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank projects.

Live Well Saline County is planning a community celebration event to highlight the initiatives at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. The event will be held this fall once the parking lot project at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank is complete and will serve as a celebration of the 15th anniversary of Live Well Saline County. 

Live Well Saline County is currently helping to support a $20,000 Chronic Disease Risk Reduction grant from the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment that was received by the Tammy Walker Cancer Center. 

The coalition is also working through a strategic planning process and will be adding mental health and tobacco prevention/cessation as new focus areas. 

The coalition recently developed a new vision statement: Liveable Healthy Saline County and mission statement: Engaging community partners to cultivate a holistic approach to well-being in Saline County.&nbsp;

Salina wellness leaders highlight Salina’s local foods initiatives at Local Food Summit

<a></a><a>Lisa Peters has been awarded the 2023 Justin Sports Medicine Committee Person of the Year Award for her volunteer work with the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene, Kansas.</a>

The Abilene resident is chairman of hospitality for the rodeo, making sure food is ordered and served to contestants and contract personnel during each of the four nights of the rodeo, plus for two breakfasts as well.

Peters’ nephew, Dusty Kuntz, vice-president of the Abilene rodeo committee, asked her to help when the new committee took over two years ago.

“All he told me was ‘you’ll have to bake 200 dozen cookies,’ and I said, well, sure. You can do anything for a week,” she joked. “I had no idea what I was getting into.”

Sponsors provide the nightly meals, which range from barbecue beef to Mexican to pulled pork sandwiches, followed with homemade ice cream each night. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy is one of the meals, which the contestants love. “They don’t get fried chicken very often,” on the road, she said.

Peters and her helpers also serve breakfast two mornings: pancakes, sausage, and biscuits and gravy. About 100 people are served for breakfast, with 150 for the evening meals.

Peters grew up in Dickinson County, rarely missing the rodeo as a kid. She has a photo her parents took of her as she slept as a seven-year-old, with her boots and jeans laid out for the next day, ready to dress for the fair. “It was the biggest event of the year,” she said. “It still gives me goosebumps.”

<a>She spent her adult life in Texas, Colorado Springs and Sioux City, Iowa, managing horse ranches and showing cutting horses. When she married Roger Peters, who also showed cutting horses, the two began showing together. She was the 1996 Reserve World Champion in the $20,000 Non-Pro Cutting Class.</a>

She never enjoyed baking, preferring to be outside and with horses. But when she married, her husband, who loved to cook, got her involved.

“I love to do cookies,” she said. “We’d go to cutting horse shows and I would always give cookies to my helpers. I got to be known for my cookies.”

She makes about fifteen varieties of cookies for rodeo hospitality, including not only the traditional types like chocolate chip and peanut butter, but also toffee sandies, double chocolate, lemon poppyseed, and her favorite, jelly-filled linzer cookies. The cookie tradition is one started by Wava Marston with the previous rodeo committee.

She also makes sure the hospitality pavilion is set up in a welcoming manner, with tablecloths, decoration, lights, and entertainment like cornhole, cards and board games.

“That’s the goal,” she said, “to make people feel at home and comfortable.

“It’s so much fun to have everybody come in here. It’s like a family, and everybody sits around and visits, and when they leave they’re happy and content. It’s a great service we can provide.”

Matt Farson, president of the rodeo committee, along with other committee members, presented Peters with her award during the rodeo on August 1.

“Lisa is one of the most willing-to-help people I have ever met,” he said. “She took on a huge role when she decided she would take care of the hospitality area, and never complained and doesn’t ask for help. She’s just a worker that loves to give back and make people smile. We are honored to have people like her on our committee.”

1She is quick to praise her fellow volunteers. “Everyone on our committee works hard all year to make this the best rodeo possible, and I am deeply honored to be selected for this award.”

She loves being involved with the rodeo. “It’s a challenge, and it’s exhausting, but it is very rewarding.”

She was awarded a pair of Justin Boots for winning the award.

Peters moved back to Abilene in 2015; her husband passed away in 2010.

The 2025 Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo will be July 29-August 1.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 4

At approximately 2:50 p.m. on September 2, Salina Police Department (SPD) officers responded to a call reporting unusual behavior by a female in the 600 block of West Prescott. 

According to Salina Police Cpt. James Feldman, a Salina resident called SPD to report that a woman wearing a bikini swimsuit had accessed a cooler on their front porch and took a beer before leaving the area.

Officers were dispatched to the neighborhood but did not initially spot the suspect. 

"One of the other officers was flagged down by a subject in the 600 block of West Prescott Avenue, and they indicated the female was southbound on 11th Street," Feldman said. "They also indicated she [suspect] had flashed them by lifting up her bikini top."

SPD officers located the suspect, identified as Nicole Hoffschneider, 39, of Bennington in the 600 block of South 11th Street. 

Hoffschneider was taken into custody on requested charges of public nudity.

Gov. Kelly orders flags at half-staff in honor of fallen Ark City firefighter

Most of us frequently use ATMs to withdraw cash, but Bitcoin ATMs (or BTMs) are different. These machines, often found in convenience stores, grocery stores, gas stations, and similar locations, allow users to buy or send cryptocurrency. 

Unfortunately, scammers are increasingly using BTMs to steal money. A new FTC Data Spotlight reveals how people are losing millions to fraud at BTMs and offers tips on how to protect yourself and others.

These scams often begin with a call or message claiming something is wrong—such as suspicious activity on your Amazon account or unauthorized charges on your bank account. The caller may say your money is at risk or that you're linked to illegal activities like money laundering or drug smuggling, but they can help. 

They then instruct you to withdraw cash from your bank, investment, or retirement accounts and deposit it into a specific BTM to supposedly protect your money or resolve the issue. However, once you deposit the cash, it goes straight into the scammer’s wallet.

Do not trust anyone who tells you to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect your money or solve a problem. Legitimate businesses and government agencies will never ask you to do this. Never withdraw cash in response to an unexpected call or message. Only scammers will make such a request. Verify the story independently. If you suspect there’s a genuine issue with one of your accounts, contact your bank, investment, or retirement company using a phone number, website, or app you know is legitimate. &nbsp;Avoid using any contact information provided in the unexpected call or message, as it will likely lead you back to the scammer. FTC: Scammers use Bitcoin ATMs to steal your money

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers arrested a 45-year-old Salina man after he allegedly kicked in a door and stole an iPhone during an argument that occurred early Saturday morning in Salina.

SPD Cpt. James Feldman said the incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, in the 1900 block of Hagaman Avenue. A neighbor reported it to SPD officers.

"At 3:30 p.m., contact was made with a 39-year-old female who reported that they lived in the 1900 block of Hagaman," Feldman said. When they had a friend come over to the residence, it looked like they got into some sort of slight argument. He left and she shut the door behind him. A few minutes later, he kicked in the door."

Feldman said the suspect entered the house and took the victim's iPhone valued at $1,000. He then promptly left the residence. 

Later that day, around 12:45 p.m., officers stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Albert and Ohio Streets. During the stop, they identified the driver as Andrew Guebara, the suspect in the earlier incident. 

Guebara was taken into custody without incident and charged with aggravated burglary, theft, and criminal property damage.

Man arrested for alleged burglary after kicking in door, stealing phone

The decision to eliminate someone’s job after years of solid performance is not one that many employers make without serious consideration.

In the case of a beef cattle operation, the decision to sell the cow from the herd is often influenced by a variety of factors, including her performance, the quality of her offspring, cattle prices and marketing opportunities among others, say the experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksre-learn.com/calf-performance-cow-cullling">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, the experts addressed a question from a listener who asked about how a calf’s performance should be factored into the decision to sell its mother.

“The decision to cull a cow from the herd is a complex decision and it usually isn’t just one thing that drives that decision,” K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers said.

Specific to a calf’s performance, if the cow is in good body condition but the calf is not at the appropriate weight for its age, K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster said it is likely that the cow is not supplying enough milk to meet that calf’s dietary needs.

“If the calf looks rough and the cow is in good shape, it tells me that calf is relying too much on the grass to meet its nutritional needs, and in a drought environment that can be challenging,” Lancaster said.

K-State veterinarian Bob Larson agreed and advised producers to evaluate the cow’s udder.

“If the calves are smaller than expected, make sure to confirm the cow has a functional udder,” Larson said

The experts agreed that studying the individual records can help make the decision to sell a cow that, historically, has raised small calves.

“By looking at the year-over-year records, a producer can see what the trend has been,” K-State agricultural economist Dustin Pendell said.

Larson added that the weaning weights of the calves will vary depending on the dam’s age.

Another factor that can influence the size of the calf is the cow’s diet during pregnancy, according to Lancaster.

“If those smaller calves are born to cows that aren’t getting enough nutrition in the mid-to-late gestation, it can have a stunting effect on those calves,” he said.

KSRE Cattle Chat: How offspring performance influences culling decision

A dispute over an alleged vehicle burglary escalated into a physical fight and an alleged BB gun shooting in Salina on Friday, resulting in the arrests of two men.

According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Cpt. James Feldman, officers were sent to the area of North Ninth Street and Stimmel Road after receiving reports of a physical altercation between two men. 

Upon arrival, officers contacted Ekko Okey, a 51-year-old Salinan and 43-year-old Joshua Angley, also of Salina. 

"Ekko stated that he believed that Joshua Angley had entered his vehicle, so he tracked him down to confront him," Cpt. Feldman said. "He [Ekko] exited his vehicle with a BB gun after supposedly after Joshua Angley commented, either that he would put a bullet in Mr. Ekko's head, or the other comment was that he was going to whoop his [Ekko's] ass."

In response, Ekko claimed he shot Angley five to seven times in the chest with the BB gun. Angley, however, denied being shot with the BB gun.

Due to conflicting statements, no immediate arrests were made at the scene. 

Officers later visited the Budget Host Inn at 222 East Diamond Drive, where Ekko stayed. The management provided video evidence showing Angley entering Ekko's vehicle and possibly removing an item. Although Ekko stated he did not notice anything missing from his vehicle, officers arrested Ekko for aggravated assault and battery.

Officers located Angley at 809 North Broadway. When officers attempted to arrest him, he resisted and tried to flee. He was apprehended and was charged with burglary of a vehicle, theft, interference with law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

WASHINGTON – As educators gear up for the new school year, the IRS reminds schoolteachers that the maximum deduction for classroom expenses in 2024 remains at $300.&nbsp;

This deduction allows educators to offset the cost of supplies, materials and other classroom essentials, providing some financial relief for those who spend their own money to improve their students' learning experience.&nbsp;

Under federal law, this $300 cap is unchanged from 2023, continuing the adjustment for inflation that began in 2022 when the limit was raised from $250.&nbsp;

Who qualifies for educator expense deductions?

This deduction is available for teachers, instructors, counselors, principals and aides who work at least 900 hours a school year in a school providing elementary or secondary education. 

Educators filing jointly can claim up to $600 if both spouses are eligible, but no more than $300 per person. Educators can claim this deduction even if they take the standard deduction, and both public and private school educators qualify.&nbsp;

Educators can claim deductions for out-of-pocket expenses on classroom items like books, supplies, equipment (including computers and software) and COVID-19 safety measures such as masks, disinfectants and air purifiers.

They may also deduct costs for professional development courses relevant to their teaching, though it could be more advantageous to use other educational tax benefits like the lifetime learning credit (refer to&nbsp;<a href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fforms-pubs%2Fabout-publication-970/1/0100019175e9d5dc-38b01c64-fe1c-4429-8351-2eead3ec0d04-000000/qjIrg-ZbUxs4hjtWtFh9dz4XxiXKu6IKDBbur3fHaL8=367">Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education</a>, Chapter 3).&nbsp;

For educators who have been granted a tax filing extension or qualify for a disaster extension, or for any other pertinent reason are still in the process of completing their 2023 tax return, the rules for claiming deductions remain consistent for the 2024 tax year. The filing extension deadline is Oct. 15, 2024. However, submitting a return before this date can aid in averting processing delays.&nbsp;

Last night, Gavin Williams pitched seven sharp innings, as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2.

Williams allowed one run and one hit, retiring his last 16 batters faced.

The Guardians began the day with a 3 1/2-game lead over Minnesota and Kansas City in the division, and held the Royals to just two hits in their season-high sixth consecutive loss.

Kansas City has tumbled to the bottom of the AL Wild Card standings but still holds the third spot with a 4.5 game lead over the Boston Red Sox

Staying in KC on Monday the Chiefs placed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the non-football injury list, which removes him from the active 53-man roster and means he will be out for at least the first four games of the season. Kansas City plays Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Chargers during that span.

Edwards-Helaire has been dealing with PTSD and vomiting after a 2018 shooting incident when he was in college at LSU.
