TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly and the Court of Appeals Nominating Commission on Friday announced the applicants for the vacancy on the Court of Appeals. Governor Kelly signed Executive Order 20-01 on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, establishing the Court of Appeals Nominating Commission.

Under Kansas law, the governor appoints judges to the Court of Appeals subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate. The Commission will review each applicant’s background and qualifications, conduct interviews, and then submit three nominees for the governor to consider.

The interview schedule will be announced at a later date.

Judge among applicants for state Court of Appeals vacancy

MCPHERSON COUNTY — The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to see more drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit.

As the roads clear up after the recent snowstorms, some drivers are already falling back into those risky habits. 

On Sunday in McPherson County, Trooper Jason Fraser stopped a vehicle traveling 100 mph in a 75 mph zone on I-135 just north of the Moundridge exit, according to a social media report from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The fine was $150.00.

Another Kan. driver caught traveling 100mph on Interstate

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — John Wilson with Kansas Action for Children said that one of that group's priorities for the 2025 legislative session in Topeka as it starts this week is to continue the discussion of a Child Tax Credit at the state level.

"The federal child tax credit lifted you know hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty during that pandemic era," Wilson said. "The federal child tax credit still exists but it's in a different format and families are no longer receiving that monthly payment like they received or could have received during the pandemic. Kansas is one of the states that doesn't have a state level child tax credit and last year we proposed a state child tax credit. We're going to do that again this year and it's really straightforward. It provides a tax credit to any family with eligible children and the great thing about a child tax credit is that it could be used for any types of expenses related to raising children."

An important key is to make it refundable.

"One family might need it for child care expenses another family might just need to help support rent or pay for food," Wilson said. "It's a really flexible form of supporting families and the way that we would like to see it structured is that the lower the income the household the higher the benefit because they're the ones that need it the most and importantly a child tax credit needs to be what we call refundable meaning if they're very low income and they don't have a tax liability they can still receive that tax credit."

They would also like to see it phase out with increased income.

"There wouldn't necessarily be a cliff if you will based on income," Wilson said. "It might be that the credit is slightly smaller but as long as you file a simple tax return you would receive that credit at the time you file your taxes."

The federal EITC was initially enacted in 1975.

"Accidents happen.  We are glad our deputy was not injured and the other driver had minor injuries.  The patrol vehicle was stationary directing traffic away from an incident when it was struck.  It may be a little old, but it was crucial to pull the rescue boat and other equipment to incidents. This is 50 percent of our fleet and replacing it will take heavy fundraising efforts for our team this year."

The following advisories identify types of fish, or other aquatic species, that should be eaten in limited quantities or, in some cases, avoided altogether because of contamination. General advice and internet resources are provided to aid the public in making informed decisions regarding the benefits and risks associated with eating locally caught fish from Kansas waters.&nbsp;

There are many health benefits associated with going outside and catching and consuming fish; however, all fish contain some amount of mercury. Consumption of mercury-rich fish can harm the development of fetuses, nursing babies, and growing children. As a result, anyone who routinely eats fish or serves fish to children, including store-bought fish, should carefully consider the type and amount of fish eaten. Therefore, mercury-sensitive individuals (women who are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant, and children 17 or younger)&nbsp;should follow the guidelines presented below for eating Kansas-caught fish.&nbsp;

UPDATED: NWS 2025 Winter Storm, USD 305 cancels school Friday 

A statement from the City of Salina On January 4 and 5, 2025, Salina experienced one of the largest snowfall events in its history. &nbsp;Records indicate that it has been 63 years since Salina received this much snow from a single event.

Here is how the City responded to the event:

- Prior to the storm, the City pre-treated City streets with chemicals to help melt snow and ice.

- From January 4 through January 6, City staff plowed streets 24 hours a day.

- The City has continued to plow streets this week to address several issues, including snow that has been plowed into the street and intersections that have developed ridges from snowplow passes crossing in opposite directions.

- The City has plowed residential streets once in each direction twice, and began replowing residential streets on Friday, January 10.

At the present time, the City is at maximum capacity in terms of staffing and equipment, and all available crews and equipment continue to be deployed.

- Trucks are assigned to zones, so you may see them en-route loaded with salt returning to their zone.

- Plowing at night is less effective due to snow melting during the day and then re-freezing.

- It takes multiple plowings, traffic &amp; thawing conditions for roadways to clear down to bare pavement.

- Traffic, plowing and shoveling of driveways and parking lots moves snow back into the roadway.

- Shoveling sidewalks is important to avoid people and school children walking in streets during dangerous driving conditions.

It is unavoidable that clearing streets will impact driveways. &nbsp;To help minimize snow being plowed back into your driveway, clear an area of 10-12 feet to the left of your driveway. &nbsp;Most of the plowed snow will then deposit in this space rather than in front of your driveway.

The City asks for your continued patience as we clear roadways. &nbsp;Please know that after each snowstorm, we review our performance and make revisions to our snowplowing policies and procedures as needed.

Saline County Health Department invites public to attend opioid assessment listening sessions

By SALINA POST A Salina man was taken into custody Thursday following a standoff at Candlewood Suites that involved threats, property damage, and a confrontation with Salina Police Department officers.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, officers responded to a report at 10 a.m. of a man attempting to force entry into Goodwill at 2640 Planet Avenue. The suspect, identified as Chase Mann, was reportedly using a knife to pry open the front door while yelling at employees, demanding clothing. Police said there was no damage to the door.

When officers arrived, Mann allegedly pulled a pocketknife and pointed it at an officer. After being given verbal commands, Mann fled the scene. An officer deployed a taser, but it was ineffective. &nbsp;Mann then entered Candlewood Suites, 2650 Planet Avenue, where police said he threatened employees and entered a room that was being cleaned by three workers.

Feldman said the workers, all females from Saline County, fled room after Mann allegedly threatened them with the knife. Inside the room, Mann reportedly caused more than $1,500 in damage by stabbing the walls and furniture.

Officers secured the room and attempted to negotiate with Mann, but he refused to surrender. Salina SWAT was deployed to assist. After negotiations failed, SWAT officers opened an exterior window and observed Mann lying on the bed. Verbal commands were issued, but Mann did not comply. Officers then used a less-lethal rubber projectile, which prompted Mann to surrender.

Mann was taken into custody at 11:58 a.m. and transported to a hospital for evaluation. He was later booked into the Saline County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, criminal threat, and felony damage to property.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Crimestoppers On Thursday, January 2, 2025, at about 1:00 PM, a subject entered Casey’s General Store, 725 W. Schilling, Salina, Kansas, and attempted to purchase tobacco products. &nbsp;

The subject did not have any identification, so he was denied the purchase. The subject became upset and as he began to leave the business, threatened harm to the employees.

Upon review of the surveillance video, it was determined the subject had also stolen a lighter.

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) Foundation for Agriculture is now accepting applications for 2025 scholarship awards.

“Supporting education is one of the core missions of the Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture,” says KFB President Joe Newland. “We are so proud to support the next generation of leaders in agriculture as they continue their education at institutions across the state.”

The program offers up to 47 scholarships at universities, community and technical colleges in Kansas for students who demonstrate a commitment to agriculture, leadership and community involvement. To apply, students or their parents must have an active Kansas Farm Bureau membership.

Detailed guidelines and the application form are available at www.kfb.org/scholarships. The deadline to apply is March 1.

The KFB Foundation for Agriculture has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships over the past decade to ensure the continued growth and success of the agricultural industry.

The Kansas Commodity Classic returns on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Salina, bringing together Kansas farmers and industry leaders for a day of valuable information and networking.

The Kansas Commodity Classic is the annual convention of the Kansas corn, grain sorghum, soybean and wheat associations. The event is free to attend and includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch, but pre-registration is requested.&nbsp;

Emceed by Greg Akagi, agriculture director for WIBW Radio and Kansas Agriculture Network, the event will include perspectives on long-term weather forecasts, market insights, investment in rural communities, the Kansas State Fair, conservation and legislative developments.&nbsp;

“We have a really interesting lineup of speakers this year,” said Shayna DeGroot, Kansas Wheat director of membership and government affairs. “We’re excited to get these speakers and panelists in front of our farmer members and learn from these experts.”&nbsp;

Bryan Schulz, general manager at the Kansas State Fair, will deliver a presentation on the fair’s strategic vision, future initiatives and long-term goals.Members of the Kansas Congressional Delegation have been invited and are expected to address key policy issues affecting Kansas farmers, along with legislative developments in Washington, D.C., and their implications for the agricultural sector.The day will conclude with an agricultural exports panel, featuring Verity Ulibarri, chairwoman of the U.S. Grains Council; Mike Spier, vice president of overseas operations at U.S. Wheat Associates; and Lance Rezac, chairman of the U.S. Soybean Export Council.
