OTTAWA COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 10:30p.m. Tuesday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Honda HR-V driven by&nbsp;Khiet Thanh&nbsp; Le, 36, Lincoln, Nebraska, was southbound on US 81 Highway one half mile south of Rifle Road.

The SUV entered the median, traveled for an extended period in the grass before the driver overcorrected.&nbsp; The vehicle traveled across both southbound lanes, entered the west ditch, crossed over a cement drainage and went airborne.&nbsp; The Honda landed and started to turn to the left, went sideways and rolled.

EMS transported Le and a passenger Thi N. A.&nbsp;Pham, 31, Lincoln, Nebraska, to Salina Regional Health Center. Both were wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

In the wake of the devastating tornado that struck Grinnell and surrounding areas of western Kansas, Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas is actively providing both emergency relief and long-term recovery support to affected families. Thanks to the generosity of donors contributing to Catholic Charities’ Disaster Relief Fund—and a $25,000 grant from Catholic Charities USA—critical aid is already reaching those in need.

This marks a critical step in connecting families with the funds and services they need to begin the rebuilding process.

Catholic Charities responds to Grinnell tornado and shares how the public can help

The beloved Kanopolis Drive-In theater will be reopening this weekend, but back better than ever.

On Friday, May 23rd the drive-in will reopen after being closed since the fall of 2024. Jessica Eagle and her husband Tyson Moyer purchased the drive-in, after it was sold last fall. New owners, means new things and the couple decided to renovate the drive-in.

According to Eagle, they have upgraded the concession stand/snack bar, audio SFX, internet speed/connection and have added more bathrooms. These are not the only renovations that took place, but Eagle commented they plan on adding and upgrading more to the theater in the future.

"This is a hidden gem that we want people to know about. This space provides a great environment for families and that is what it's all about," said Eagle.

Kanopolis Drive-In brings new additions and upgrades for its reopening this weekend

A release was sent out to all Salina USD 305 parents and guardians, regarding someone needing&nbsp; "emergency assistance." Salina USD 305 posted the following statement:

Today, May 20, at Central High School, an individual required emergency assistance. Emergency personnel were called and they addressed the issue. Students were kept in their classrooms for a short time to keep halls clear for emergency personnel. Emergency vehicles and services were present to provide support for the medical emergency.

There was no school safety issue. Our school schedule was not affected and student learning continues as normal.

USD 305 issues statement regarding an emergency incident that occurred at Central

St. John's Missionary Baptist Church in Salina, will continue in offering their annual free summer camps and programs for children this year.

According to Senior Pastor Dr. Allen Smith, St. John's will offer their food program, "Camp HYPE," "MADD Camp," "Vacation Bible School (VBS)" and a new mentoring program, "Hope in 3-D (date pending)."

Each camp and program provides learning resources, food and activities for children ages 1-18 (with the exception of Hope in 3-D) to enjoy throughout the summer. Breakfast and lunch will be served during each camp/program, free of charge.

The summer food program starts on Tuesday, May 27th - Thursday, July 31st. Free meals will be served at St. John's on 215 S. Chicago St. and at the Salina Public Library 301 W. Elm St.

Monday - Friday,&nbsp;lunch will be served at St. John's (215 S. Chicago)&nbsp;from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. Monday - Friday, lunch will be served at Salina Public Library (301 W. Elm)&nbsp;from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.

Fridays only, dinner will be served in bulk at the Old Western Sizzlin Building (1708 W. Crawford) from 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm.

Camp HYPE starts on Monday, June 9th - Friday, June 20th. This camp helps the youth understand resources that are available in the community. Agencies/organizations such as, Law Enforcement, Boys &amp; Girls Club, Boy &amp; Girl Scouts, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, etc. will educate children about the resources they offer.

MADD (music, art, dance and drama) camp starts on Monday, July 7th - Friday, July 18th.&nbsp;

VBS will occur on Monday, July 28th - Wednesday, July 30th.&nbsp;

Hope in 3-D,&nbsp;for children ages 10-18 is undecided on a date. Dr. Smith encourages parents to call at&nbsp;785-827-7082,&nbsp;to register their child.

A friend of a Kansas teen's family who lost their son to a tragic accident, has started a go fund me fundraiser to help raise money for funeral costs.

Nathaniel B. Dold, passed away at age 18 on a Kansas highway in Ellsworth County on Thursday, May 15th. A friend of Nathaniel's family,&nbsp;Erin Rogers started a go fund me to help mitigate the unexpected financial obligations put on the Dold family.

Rogers left a statement on the go fund me page.

"My name is Erin Rogers, and I am a friend and fellow co-worker of DeeDee. As you are aware, they tragically lost their child, Nathaniel Dold, in a motor vehicle accident on May 15th. Due to the unexpected financial obligations that this kind of situation can incur, we are asking for donations for this family to raise money for funeral costs. Friend of a late Kansas teen's family starts go fund me fundraiser

The Smoky Hill River Festival Medallion Quest will begin this Wednesday, which marks the official countdown to the Smoky Hill River Festival.

Beginning in 2009, the Medallion Quest brings the community together to celebrate the arts in a creative and connected way. Over the years, families and friends have searched side by side, solved riddles, and endeavored to find the Medallion.

The first Medallion Quest clue will be shared live from the steps of the Smoky Hill Museum at 211 West Iron Ave., at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, May 21st.&nbsp;After that day, two different Festival Medallion Quest clues will be provided daily at 7:30 am and 4:30 pm until the Medallion is found.

There is no cost to participate in Festival Medallion Quest. All ages are welcome to participate. Participants must be 18 years of age to claim any prize.&nbsp;

The Festival Medallion Quest 2025 prize package includes, $1,000 in cash, $2,000 in festival gift certificates, (to be used for purchases in the Fine Art and Craft Show or Art/Craft demonstration area during the festival weekend). Four complimentary festival admission wristbands, one on-grounds festival parking pass (weather permitting), an invitation for four to attend the evening premiere Art Patron Party on Thursday, June 12th and 4 Smoky Hill River Festival t-shirts.

“The Festival Medallion Quest is the perfect way to kick off the festival season,” says Smoky Hill River Festival Director Brad Anderson. “Thousands of searchers get to see the town with new eyes as they interpret clues and get creative trying to find the Medallion.”

Since the Medallion Quest’s inception, thousands have taken part. The Medallion is a unique object designed each year by an artist. The custom-designed Medallion looks different each time. It has been made from wood, paper, clay, resin, or plastic to resemble a wide variety of objects to ensure a challenging hunt.

The Medallion will be hidden on public property within the Salina city limits, which may include city parks. Curfew hours for all city parks remain in effect during the Quest and are posted at each park. It will not be hidden at Kenwood or Oakdale Parks, on private property, or on Salina Airport Authority property. 

Locating the Medallion does not require the destruction of property. All clues and notifications will be posted on the Festival Medallion Quest and Smoky Hill River Festival websites, through participating local media partners, and physically outside the west entrance of the Salina Arts &amp; Humanities Office at 211 West Iron Ave.

Another round of severe storms are predicted to occur for Salina and the Saline County area for Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, severe storms are likely for this afternoon and evening on Monday. It has been issued that wind gusts can get as high as 25 mph. Large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible, primarily along and east of I-135.

Residents should remain alert and take necessary precaution as needed for dangerous weather conditions.

Likelihood for another round of severe storms for the Salina/Saline County area

&nbsp;In early May, a delegation of U.S. livestock genetics and agriculture leaders representing Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Idaho, and the Senepol Cattle Breeders Association traveled to Aguascalientes, Mexico, to advance trade partnerships and expand the global reach of U.S. beef cattle genetics. Delegates from Kansas included Dr. Justin Smith, Kansas Department of Agriculture Animal Health Commissioner; Dr. John Nelson, KDA field veterinarian; and Thad Geiger, Geiger Cattle, Troy, Kansas.

Mexico remains the largest agricultural trade partner for the state of Kansas, with trade totaling $1.85 billion in 2024. As global trade relationships evolve, this mission emphasized the importance of continued collaboration, especially in livestock and genetics.

“Expanding U.S. beef cattle genetics exports and understanding Mexico’s evolving feedlot operations are essential to fostering resilient supply chains,” said Suzanne Ryan-Numrich, KDA Director of Ag Marketing. “While we work to promote beef cattle genetic exports, we also aim to better understand the needs and priorities of our Mexican counterparts.”

The delegation took part in&nbsp;trilateral discussions with the Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones Ganaderas and the Canadian Cattle Association, where they addressed shared industry concerns including trade barriers, inspection protocols, and threats such as the New World screwworm, a pest that poses a risk to livestock and has disrupted cross-border trade.

The delegation also conducted site visits to cattle breeding operations and regional feedlots and engaged with industry during the Feria Nacional de San Marcos, one of Mexico’s most prominent agricultural expos.

“The trip gave me a deep appreciation for the resilience of Mexican cattle producers who operate successfully in challenging conditions,” said Geiger. “The trilateral discussions underscored how closely our industries are connected. Our strengths complement each other, and strong partnerships benefit both sides of the border.”

This trade mission is part of KDA’s mission to support Kansas producers and agribusinesses, including facilitating opportunities for producers to market and sell livestock genetics both domestically and internationally. These missions are made possible through KDA’s membership in U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc., with funding provided through the USDA Market Access Program.

GEARY COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 7:30a.m. Monday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Ford Flex driven by Heather L.&nbsp;Pagulayan, 40, El Paso, Texas, was northbound on U.S. 77 at Miller Drive in the left lane.

The Ford struck a 2001 Chevy Suburban driven by Julieanne T.&nbsp; Bettis, 27, Belleville, who was northbound and had performed a u-turn between K-57 and Miller Drive in front of the Ford.

&nbsp;EMS transported Bettis and a passenger in the Chevy Sarah L. Kohler, 36, Manhattan, to&nbsp;Stormont Vail hospital-Flint Hills. Pagulayan was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Summer school registration for USD 305 high school students has officially opened for this 2025 summer season.

According to USD 305, summer school for high school students will begin on Monday, June 2nd.

 The programs are limited to USD 305 students entering grades 10-12 and seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. All classes will be held at Central High School. 

Classes that will be offered are Credit Recovery, Driver Education, ACT Preparation and Enrichment Courses.&nbsp;All credit recovery courses are offered through computer-assisted instruction.

Students are required to attend each day of the session. A morning and afternoon block allows for enrollment in two courses. If students accelerate through these courses, additional courses could be added as needed.

Breakfast and lunch will be available on site at no charge. Breakfast is served from 7:45 am - 8:00 am and lunch is served from 11:00 am to 11:20 am.

A field tractor was engulfed in flames and its loss of value was well over $5,000.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, a 1974 case tractor was being used by 70-year old Jarold Ross on Friday, May 16th. When he was done, he parked the tractor in a field in North Salina.

 The next day on Saturday around 2:15 pm, the tractor caught on fire.&nbsp; Deputies received report about the fire and the Salina Fire Department extinguished it.&nbsp;

The cause of fire was unknown and loss of the tractor was valued at $10,000.

A tractor valued over $5,000 was destroyed after catching on fire in North Salina

A 16-year old boy was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City, KS after attacking a Salina man with a broken piece of a dish plate several times.

According to Police Captain James Feldman on Sunday, a 48-year old man and a 16-year old boy got into an argument at a home in the 2300 block of Quincy.&nbsp;As the argument boiled, the boy grabbed a plate, broke a piece of it and threatened the man that he was going to attack him with it. 

A 44-year old woman was at the house as well and the boy decided to throw the rest of the plate at her, but she evaded it. Furthermore, the boy then attacked the 48-year old man with the broken piece and cut him several times on his body.

Salina police received report about the incident and arrived to the scene. Upon arrival, officers came in contact with all three residents at the house.

Officers then arrested the boy without incident and was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City. He was charged with aggravated assault and battery.

The 48-year old man did not need any medical treatment.&nbsp;

It was not determined whether the three residents were acquainted.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN - It takes a calculated effort to empty a seven-story building of furniture: 38 hours of planning, 272 staff and volunteer hours, and the participation of 34 departments and 41 non-profits, to be exact.

Spring cleaning was in full swing as Kansas State University departments moved out of the Unger Complex last month. With an abundance of furniture, supplies and office items to clear out, K-State’s divisions of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/finsvcs/">Financial Services</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/it/">Information Technology</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/facilities/">Facilities</a>&nbsp;coordinated&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/news/articles/2025/04/university-departments-invited-surplus-furniture.html">a surplus giveaway</a>.

Furniture was first made available to K-State departments and local nonprofits before being offered to the public at no cost. Items ranged from office printers to desks to workstation wall panel dividers.

With each chair and whiteboard loaded into the back of a pickup, K-State's sustainability and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/community-health/">community well-being</a>&nbsp;values were on full display, said Memory Buffington, assistant vice president of university and shared services accounting and procurement.

"When we prioritize reuse, we minimize waste and uphold the university's commitment to resource stewardship," Buffington said. "This event was an opportunity to maximize the usefulness of university assets, reduce our need for new purchases and reinforce our role as a good community partner."

Local nonprofits were eager to participate, including&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://flinthills.jobcorps.gov/">Flint Hills Job Corps</a>, which repurposed 289 items. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Job Corps is the nation's largest free, residential career training and education program for low-income adults ages 16 through 24, educating students in over 10 different in-demand industries. Together, Job Corps and the university share a common mission of bringing education, experience and expertise to Kansas and beyond.

Recent program changes had left the organization needing to furnish their classrooms rapidly, and K-State proved to be an invaluable partner.

"The timing was perfect," said Gina Shope, Flint Hills Job Corps director. "The furniture giveaway has allowed us to furnish all of our classrooms with desks, bookshelves and chairs. The impact of this event will be felt for many, many years, and I'm proud of the university for looking beyond itself to support the needs of our community."

In total, 2,316 pieces of furniture were rehomed to churches, labs, museums, youth programs and more - all while avoiding the landfill, thanks to a collaborative effort from motivated Wildcats and community partners.

After all the heavy lifting, itemizing and upcycling, the result exemplifies&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/next-gen/plan/themes/operational-excellence.html">operational excellence</a>&nbsp;in action. University assets become more than just cabinets and drawers — each item represented an opportunity to further K-State’s land-grant mission, engaging the K-State community as they navigate change together.

All it takes is a plan and a little elbow grease —some assembly required.

K-State’s furniture giveaway brings a lot to the table

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in April. This is unchanged from 3.8% in March and an increase from 3.4% in April 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas was unchanged at 67.1% in April, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Saline County is down from&nbsp; 3.5 percent in March to 3.2 percent. The rate is also down in Dickinson, Ellsworth and counties across central Kansas.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,400 from March. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,500 over the month, while government decreased by 100. The largest job gains in the private sector were in professional and business services (+2,500 jobs). The largest decrease was in private education and health services (-600 jobs).

Since April 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 2,800. This change is due to a decrease of 700 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,500 government jobs.

Jobless rate down in Saline County and across the region

Members of the class of 2025, together with friends, family&nbsp;and community members, gathered Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center for Kansas Wesleyan University’s 2025 Commencement ceremony.

Educators Dr. Ralita&nbsp;Cheeks ’07 and Dr. Brandon Cheeks ’05 became the first co-Commencement speakers on record for KWU, delivering a message on keeping God as the focal point in one’s life while pursuing one’s goals.

Numerous seniors received academic awards, including Abigail Palmer (Salina, Kan.) and Stephen Simpson III (Kingman, Ariz.), who shared the University Medallion, the honor given to the graduating senior with the highest GPA. Caleigh Evans (Russell, Kan.) and Clay Gagnon (Andover, Kan.) each received the Professor Fran Jabara Leadership award, an honor based on entrepreneurial traits and leadership.

The university’s Nursing class received their pins in a ceremony Friday evening in Sams Chapel and also&nbsp;participated in Saturday’s ceremony.

The City of Salina has announced there will be a replacement road construction, that will take place on South 9th St. this upcoming Monday.

According to the City beginning Monday, May 19th, the Public Works Department will be replacing a section of roadway on South 9th St., between Iron Ave. and Walnut St.

South 9th will remain open to traffic, but will be detoured around the construction.&nbsp;

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within two to three days.
