SALINE COUNTY —A 33-year-old Ellsworth County woman was sentenced Friday morning to more than 14 years in prison for killing a 55-year-old Brookville woman Deanna June Sommerfeld, and seriously injuring her 61-year-old husband Mark Sommerfeld in a head-on crash on K-140 and South Reece Road in the early morning hours of last August 8th.

Kayla Errebo was driving under the influence at the time of the crash, and ran from the scene and was later apprehended at a home in Ellsworth.

In a plea agreement Errebo pleaded no contest to 2nd degree murder, aggravated battery and probation violation. In victim impact statements, Sommerfeld's husband, son, sister and niece spoke on how the family has been devastated  with the death of June. Family members also said that they didn't feel the sentence was long enough.

Errebo's father, Grandmother, and close friend spoke on her behalf saying she was a good person and mother who made mistakes.Errebo, who at times Friday was physically shaking in her chair, told the court she was very sorry and remorseful and she is not the type of person that the media has made her out to be, adding she was fighting for children.

Saline County District Judge Amy Norton told Errebo while handing down the sentence that Errebo was selfish and made terrible choices on August 7th and 8th last year.Errebo will receive credit on her sentence for time already served, and can earn 15-percent credit for good behavior while in prison.
