<a href="http://salinasymphony.org">&nbsp;The Salina Symphony </a>will kick off 2025 with “Rocking Tchaikovsky” on Sun., Jan. 12, at 4 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre.

Uplifting tunes and exuberant rhythms will abound in this concert of epic proportions. The concert will open with “…the light that breathes…,” a new work by Maestro Segal. “The piece begins with textures and hidden melodies as if searching for the path forward,” said Segal. “[It] ends in a glorious celebration of light and life.”

The principal cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra, Mark Kosower, will then take the stage to perform Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto, a wild and catchy work described by the composer as “jazz, a minuet, rock, a smidgen of polka, and a march.”

On the second half, Tchaikovsky’s monumental and heroic Fifth Symphony paints the ultimate picture of victory over strife. From the lush orchestration to the soaring melodies, you won’t want this concert to end!

Mark Kosower joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal cello in 2010. Described as “a virtuoso of staggering prowess” by The Plain Dealer, he is a consummate artist, equally known around the world as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician.

Alongside solo appearances with The Cleveland Orchestra, Kosower has performed alongside the symphony orchestras of Detroit, Houston, Minnesota, Oregon, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Seattle as well as orchestras around the world.

Did you set a New Year’s resolution this year?

As the calendar flips to a new year, millions resolve to make big changes: eat healthier, exercise regularly, save more money, or spend more time with loved ones. Yet, by mid-February, many struggle to stick to these ambitious goals. Why do resolutions often fail, and how can we make this year different? The answer might lie in the groundbreaking insights from BJ Fogg's book, Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything.

Fogg, a behavioral scientist at Stanford University, argues that the key to sustainable change isn’t grand gestures but tiny, manageable actions.

 "The essence of tiny habits," Fogg writes, "is to start small, anchor new behaviors to existing routines, and celebrate even the tiniest victories."

 Many New Year’s resolutions falter because they rely on willpower or unrealistic expectations. For instance, committing to an hour-long workout every morning might seem inspiring at first, but the demands of daily life can make it hard to maintain. Instead, Fogg suggests starting with something so small it feels almost effortless. For example, if you want to get fit, start with one or two push-ups a day.

 These micro-actions bypass the brain’s resistance to change and build momentum over time.

 A cornerstone of Fogg’s method is anchoring—connecting a new habit to an existing routine. For example, if you want to practice mindfulness, you might decide to take three deep breaths each time you sit down at your desk. If you aim to drink more water, place a glass next to your coffee maker and take a sip while your coffee brews.

Anchoring ensures the new habit fits seamlessly into your day. Over time, these small actions snowball into more significant changes.

Celebration is another critical ingredient in Fogg’s method. Rather than waiting for a big milestone to celebrate, Fogg encourages acknowledging every small win. A fist pump, a smile, or even saying, “I’m awesome!” can reinforce the positive emotions tied to the habit, making you more likely to repeat it.

“Emotions create habits,” Fogg explains. “The more positive the experience, the more the brain will want to do it again.” 

This year, instead of crafting a daunting list of goals, try a Tiny Habits approach:

1. Pick a small starting point. Want to exercise more? Begin by putting on your workout shoes each morning.

2. Anchor it. Link your habit to something you already do, like brushing your teeth or checking your phone.

3. Celebrate. Cheer yourself on after completing even the most minor step.

A fresh start: Achieving New Year’s resolutions with tiny habits

A Salina man was arrested Monday evening after allegedly assaulting a woman and leading Salina Police Department (SPD) officers on a chase through snowy streets.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 1600 block of Beverly Drive at approximately 3:15 p.m. on January 6. When they arrived, they spoke with a woman from Kansas City, Missouri, who said she had been involved in an argument with Mauro Roman, 29 of Salina,&nbsp; a resident of the home.

The victim reported that Roman became enraged when she informed him she planned to return to her residence in Kansas City. During the altercation, Roman allegedly grabbed her by the throat, restricting her breathing, and covered her nose. He also reportedly kicked and spit on her and threatened to kill her.

Another individual at the residence contacted SPD, prompting Roman to flee the scene.

Later that evening, at approximately 7 p.m., an associate of Roman alerted officers that Roman was at a home in the 2700 block of Brett Avenue. When officers arrived, Roman fled out the back of the residence.

SPD officers pursued Roman on foot, tracking his footprints in the snow to a van parked in the 2600 block of Colonial Avenue. Officers found Roman hiding inside the van, which police say he had no ties to—Roman was taken into custody without further incident.

The victim declined medical treatment at the scene.

Roman was arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail on Aggravated Domestic Battery, Criminal Threat, Felony Interference, and Vehicle Burglary.

Moran will return to being Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs (SVAC) in addition to new committee assignments as a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. This committee also allows the senator to continue bolstering medical research to save and improve lives and maintain our country’s role as a leader in medical innovation on the world’s stage. In this role, Sen. Moran will also continue advocating for support to NASA, promote STEM education and advance our nation’s goal of returning American astronauts to the Moon.

The Commerce Committee plays an essential role in maintaining and advancing a thriving economy and provides Sen. Moran the opportunity to advocate for improvements to highways, rail, shipping, space, interstate commerce, consumer issues, economic development, technology and product safety. Through this committee, Sen. Moran will also continue to work to bridge the digital divide and increase rural connectivity through oversight of federal broadband deployment programs.

As a member of the&nbsp;Senate Committee on Indian Affairs,&nbsp;Sen. Moran will be in a position to help lead the effort to reform Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas. Sen. Moran previously served on the committee and worked to improve conditions for the tribal college in Lawrence. Bureaucratic mismanagement and neglect by the Bureau of Indian Affairs led Sen. Moran to rejoin this committee to hold the bureau accountable and improve the lives of Native Americans across the country.

Moran will continue serving as a member of the&nbsp;Senate Select Committee on Intelligence&nbsp;and will have the opportunity to work on a number of sensitive and pressing issues facing our country’s national security, including continued threats from foreign powers, non-state actors and transnational threats. He has served on both the House and Senate Committees on Veterans’ Affairs and served as both ranking member and chairman of the committee. Sen. Moran committee assignments for the 119th Congress

The arctic blast of January 2025 hit Saline County hard. While we often claim to be prepared for snowstorms, the truth is, we seldom are. The storm, which began in the early hours of January 4 and finally subsided on January 6, brought significant challenges.&nbsp; As someone who has lived in the Kipp, Kansas, area since birth, I’m no stranger to harsh winters, but this storm caused me considerable concern. It’s not unusual for me to shovel large amounts of snow from my driveway. However, this time, I had to dig myself out to ensure my vehicles were positioned to face outward for when the county road maintainer passed by. Despite my efforts, I watched snowplows drive toward Kipp—the nearest town—multiple times without clearing my road. The road grader went through Kipp three times, and each time, I hoped they would clear the way for me and my son, who lives just a quarter-mile down the road. Yet, each time, they went in the opposite direction. Around 4 p.m., I called the Saline County Road and Bridge Department to ask when Schilling Road would be cleared. My son, a Great Plains Manufacturing employee, needed the road open to get to work. I spoke with Tyson Gold, who asked how he could assist.&nbsp; I explained our situation, emphasizing the mandatory workdays my son had to attend. I requested the road from Kipp to Whitmore be cleared. Tyson assured me it would be done, and by Tuesday morning, the road was indeed cleared.

A family friend further assisted by clearing the stretch from Whitmore to my driveway and even created a path through a field so my son could walk out to reach work. Tyson had promised the roads on Schilling would be passable by 8 a.m. Tuesday after crews stopped work Monday at 4:30 p.m. Despite multiple equipment breakdowns and crews working tirelessly since 4:30 a.m., they managed to keep their word. However, the challenges didn’t end there. A wall of snow was left on Schilling, which my family friend cleared.On Tuesday morning, I called the county to apologize, hoping my friend’s efforts hadn’t caused issues. I was reassured that the road crew could handle it without any problems. I left my house at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, only to find that Schilling Road, half a mile west of Kipp, was still not fully cleared. After three days of being trapped at home, I was grateful for my family friend’s help. The storm, which began in the early hours of January 4 and finally subsided on January 6, brought significant challenges.&nbsp; As someone who has lived in the Kipp, Kansas, area since birth, I’m no stranger to harsh winters, but this storm caused me considerable concern. It’s not unusual for me to shovel large amounts of snow from my driveway. However, this time, I had to dig myself out to ensure my vehicles were positioned to face outward for when the county road maintainer passed by. Despite my efforts, I watched snowplows drive toward Kipp—the nearest town—multiple times without clearing my road. The road grader went through Kipp three times, and each time, I hoped they would clear the way for me and my son, who lives just a quarter-mile down the road. Yet, each time, they went in the opposite direction. Around 4 p.m., I called the Saline County Road and Bridge Department to ask when Schilling Road would be cleared. My son, a Great Plains Manufacturing employee, needed the road open to get to work. I spoke with Tyson Gold, who asked how he could assist.&nbsp; I explained our situation, emphasizing the mandatory workdays my son had to attend. I requested the road from Kipp to Whitmore be cleared. Tyson assured me it would be done, and by Tuesday morning, the road was indeed cleared. A family friend further assisted by clearing the stretch from Whitmore to my driveway and even created a path through a field so my son could walk out to reach work. Tyson had promised the roads on Schilling would be passable by 8 a.m. Tuesday after crews stopped work Monday at 4:30 p.m. Despite multiple equipment breakdowns and crews working tirelessly since 4:30 a.m., they managed to keep their word. However, the challenges didn’t end there. A wall of snow was left on Schilling, which my family friend cleared.On Tuesday morning, I called the county to apologize, hoping my friend’s efforts hadn’t caused issues. I was reassured that the road crew could handle it without any problems. I left my house at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, only to find that Schilling Road, half a mile west of Kipp, was still not fully cleared. After three days of being trapped at home, I was grateful for my family friend’s help. TOPEKA — A long-distance collaboration between Kansas State University and Garden City Community College offers residents of southwest Kansas the opportunity to earn a four-year college degree without relocating.

The agreement would combine remote instruction with on-site laboratory experiences as students completed the initial 60 to 75 hours of course credits at the community college in Garden City before finishing a bachelor’s degree at the land-grant university based in Manhattan.

The memorandum of understanding signed last month would focus attention on students with an associate degree interested in undergraduate programs within K-State’s College of Agriculture, including animal science, agribusiness or crop science. GCCC and KSU could add program offerings based on regional industry needs.

“Southwest Kansas has been a four-year educational desert for far too long,” said Garden City Mayor Manuel Ortiz.

The percentage of the population in southwest Kansas with a four-year college degree is nearly half the statewide average. In the region, 17.9% of residents have earned a four-year degree compared to the state average of 33.9%.

GCCC President Ryan Ruda said the partnership would prove to be transformative in terms of higher education in southwest Kansas. GCCC’s expertise is in delivering certificates and associate degrees, while K-State’s forte is in four-year bachelor’s degrees and graduate school programs.

“By enabling bachelor’s degree completion right here in Garden City, we’re offering students a unique chance to advance their careers while staying rooted in their communities,” Ruda said.

KSU President Richard Linton said the land-grant mission of the university included the placement of educational opportunities within the reach of Kansans regardless of background or hometown. He said broadening options for a high-quality bachelor’s degree through the public college and university was a “powerful step in making higher education a reality for the hardworking people of southwest Kansas.”

Lona Duvall, president of the Finney County Economic Development Corporation, said the alliance would fill a critical educational gap and enhance economic development in the region. It should serve to build the skilled workforce in ways beneficial to local businesses and help in attracting new industry, Duvall said.

In the future, officials said, community surveys would be conducted to determine priorities in terms of expanding four-year degree offerings in southwest Kansas through GCCC and KSU. Likely options include education and health sciences, officials said.

Kansas State, Garden City CC striving to shrink bachelor’s degree ‘educational desert’

By the time this column is posted, the first significant winter weather system of 2025 will have passed. For our area, the weather experts are all forecasting periods of ice, strong winds, extreme cold and heavy snow. 

The winter storm watch notifications have been constant on my phone. Road crews have already started treating the roads and people have been making their way to the grocery store to stock up. 

The term “French Toast Warning” is being used to describe this incoming weather event, which is basically suggesting people get to the store and stock up on all of the essentials for French toast including eggs, milk and bread.

I’m an early prepper, so I got all of my ingredients before the masses did. Early prepping is something we have to do during this time of the year, because we aren't just preparing our household for the weather; we are having to prepare the farm for the weather as well.

Machines need to be winterized, fuel tanks need to be filled, equipment needs stored. 

Since there's a chance of losing power with this storm, the generator is at the ready, propane tanks are topped off, flashlights and lanterns are charged and batteries are tested. The cabinet doors under the sinks have been opened and water jugs are filled.

With or without power, the animals still need cared for. Straw bales are moved and spread to provide warm bedding for the animals. Hay bales are strategically placed for future feedings. Ice breaking tools are brought out, and the heavy-duty winter choring clothes are hanging near the back door.

A pile of old towels are at the ready for use on floors to combat wet and muddy boots or to wrap up and dry off tiny newborn lambs since we are currently in the middle of lambing.

It’s my hope that our storm prepping is not needed, but after an incredibly brutal January in 2024 that kept the kids home more than they were at school, roads continually drifted shut, and farmers and ranchers working around the clock to care for their livestock, it’s wise to be ready.

Even if this anticipated first winter storm of 2025 ends up being all that is described, maybe, just maybe, we’ll be able to use the ingredients from our pre-winter weather grocery run and get to enjoy some warm French toast in between feeding, watering and caring for our livestock during this first winter storm of 2025.

Insight: Farm and French toast preparation

The last section of Interstate 70 has reopened&nbsp; from Salina to E Geary County line, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Motorists are advised to use caution, slow down and driver prepared as some highways remain icy and snow packed.

Kansas Department of Transportation crews are making progress in reopening state roads across the state. Major state highways in northeast Kansas are open, including all interstate highways in the Kansas City metro area, according to a media release from KDOT.

I-70 remains closed in both directions from Hays to the K-177 exit south of Manhattan. State highways in north central Kansas remain closed in Jewell, Republic, Washington, Mitchell, Cloud, Clary, Lincoln, Ottawa, Ellsworth, Saline, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, McPherson, Marion and Chase counties. South central Kansas state highways in Reno, Harvey and Butler counties also remain closed.

“This storm was an extraordinary weather event, delivering record-breaking snowfalls in many areas,” Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed said. “Our crews were prepared and responded as quickly as possible, but the storm’s scale created significant challenges. We appreciate the traveling public’s patience and cooperation throughout this event as it allowed crews to make substantial progress overnight. KDOT remains focused on reopening roads, but we encourage travelers to use caution as snow-packed conditions may persist in some areas.”

In addition to clearing roads overnight, KDOT crews worked in cooperation with the Kansas Highway Patrol and local emergency management officials to guide stranded motorists on I-70 in Dickinson County to shelter.

As weather conditions improve across the state, KDOT reminds drivers to maintain a safe distance from crews and equipment working to clear the roads.

Laura Kelly says bipartisan highlights of 2024 include strengthening authority of the state’s independent advocate for children, overhaul of Kansas’ worker compensation system and advancement of a blueprint for improving classroom instruction in reading.

Kelly, a Democrat in the middle of her second term as governor, said collaboration with the Republican-led Legislature, led to progress during the year on tax relief, K-12 education funding, infrastructure investments, economic development. In 2024, Kelly signed 103 bills that earned bipartisan support in the Legislature.

“I’m sort of amazed how much we’ve been able to get done,” Kelly said in an interview with Kansas Reflector. “We made promises and we’ve actually been able to deliver on those promises.”

Kelly signed legislation in June mandating establishment in law of an independent agency dedicated to advocating for children involved with the state welfare system. The agency is charged with acting on complaints regarding health, safety and welfare of individuals under 18 years of age in custody of the Kansas Department for Children and Families, alleged to be a child in need of care or receiving services from Kansas Department of Corrections.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/04/23/kansas-governor-signs-bill-creating-independent-agency-devoted-to-child-welfare-advocacy/">law, approved 117-3 in the House and 36-3 in the Senate</a>, required the top administrator of the agency to be appointed by the governor subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate. The child advocate office previously existed under a state executive order signed by Kelly.

Rep. Susan Concannon, R-Beloit, said the law offered “peace of mind that we will have a future of advocacy for Kansas kids who are in the child welfare system.”

“This bill places Kansas at the forefront of nationwide efforts to reform reading instruction,” Kelly said.

Kelly emphasized approval of a compromise bill amending the state’s system for compensating workers injured on the job. The law negotiated by labor and business interests and&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/briefs/kelly-signs-worker-compensation-reform-bill-passed-unanimously-by-lawmakers/">unanimously passed in the House and Senate</a>&nbsp;increased the cap on compensation benefits and added a cost-of-living adjustment beginning in 2027.

Under this law, employees and employers involved in a dispute would have the option of settling cases without a formal hearing. They also would exchange medical records in a timely way and restrict use of independent medical examinations.

“Experienced, level-headed professionals on both sides of this issue were able and willing to work together,” said Rep. Sean Tarwater, a Stilwell Republican.

During 2024, Kelly and GOP lawmakers fought on specific provisions of tax reform, abortion and transgender rights, election law changes, Medicaid expansion and legalization of medical marijuana. 

The year was marked by a struggle over the Legislature’s two-thirds Republican majority. Kelly wanted to see enough Democrats elected to the House and Senate to deny GOP leadership a supermajority. The opposite occurred: Republicans deepened their bench in both chambers, making the looming 2025 legislation session more difficult for Kelly.

Meanwhile, Kelly said it took legislators from both sides of the political aisle to fully fund K-12 education for the sixth year in a row and appropriate $75 million for special education programs in 2024. The state budget dedicated $1.3 billion to the state’s higher education system.

&nbsp;In June, after a special session of the Legislature, the governor signed a robust tax relief bill that “responsibly cuts Kansans taxes while preserving the state’s long-term fiscal health.”

She said it would result in state tax reductions of nearly $2 billion over a five-year period. It moved Kansas to a two-tier income tax, down from three levels of taxation. It eliminated the state income tax on Social Security income and nearly doubled the state tax exemption on residential property to $75,000.

In terms of economic development, the&nbsp;Kelly&nbsp;administration reported the state attracted 266 economic development projects that equated to $3.4 billion in new business investment in 2024. The governor’s office said the initiatives created or sustained 5,100 jobs.

Kelly said the Kansas Department of Transportation repaired 1,740 miles of roads and 136 bridges in the fiscal year ending in June. In an effort to narrow the digital divide, the state invested $16.8 million in broadening access to high-speed internet services. The state budget approved by the Legislature committed $35 million annually to water infrastructure, conservation and quality programs in Kansas.

Kelly said the state added 1,200 licensed child care slots in 2024. In September, the governor said Kansas would cover the state licensing, background check and fingerprinting fees for child care providers seeking initial licensure or licensure renewal through 2025 or until funding was expended.

“I am proud of all my administration has accomplished throughout this year,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“By working with the Legislature, our state agencies, stakeholders and Kansans from across the state, we were able to reach new heights in 2024. I look forward to carrying this momentum into 2025.”

On Saturday afternoon, the KHP worked an accident on Interstate 70 at the Salina exit, according to Trooper Ben Gardner. The exit ramp remains closed due to ice. "Every time we try moving vehicles, they slide into each other," according to Gardner.

"While we’re working to reopen this exit, other serious calls are coming in, so tow services are being rerouted to higher-priority incidents.

" If you can, please stay home. The roads are slick, and unnecessary travel puts everyone at risk."

The region including Saline County and surrounding counties, are currently experiencing a significant number of crashes. The most challenging conditions are on Interstate 70 in Ellsworth and Russell Counties, where multiple slide-offs, rollovers, and both non-injury and injury accidents have occurred, according to a social media report from Trooper Ben Gardner.

These incidents include passenger cars, semi-truck rollovers, and even a fire truck that rolled over—thankfully, the first responders are okay.



The roadways are completely ice-covered. Motorists need to slow down significantly if you must travel. Ideally, stay home and avoid driving until conditions improve.

SPD enacts emergency accident reporting plan

MCPHERSON COUNTY —Four people died in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Saturday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Honda CRV driven by&nbsp;Jacob F. Aich, 36, Hutchinson was traveling&nbsp;southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 135 two miles south of Kansas 4 Highway.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The SUV struck a 2013 Toyota Rav4 driven by Lydia P.&nbsp;Barton, 31, Wichita, head-on in the passing lane. 

Aich, Barton and two passengers in the Toyota, a 13-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy both of Monument, Colorado were pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the Toyota were transported to Sedgwick County Forensic Science. Aich was transported to Frontier Forensics.

EMS transported a passenger in the Honda Kirkland A.&nbsp;Byers, 29, Hutchinson, to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment of serious injuries. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the season’s first accumulating ice and snow forecast to impact much of the Sunflower State this weekend, AAA Kansas is urging drivers to be prepared for the conditions.

"We're just wanting to remind drivers to be prepared," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "First and foremost, if you don't have to be out driving in the height of the winter storm, just stay home. That's the safest, for sure. If you do have to be out in it, just refamiliarize yourself with driving on snow and ice. Take everything slower. Be much more deliberate. Leave plenty of extra space for turns and stops and pretty much everything as you are driving."

AAA Kansas anticipates an increase in emergency roadside service calls as the wintry weather sweeps through and road conditions deteriorate, with slide-offs and crashes due to slick roads, battery/non-start problems and flat tires the main culprits.

"Tires and batteries are among the most common reasons why our AAA emergency roadside service crews get called for service," Steward said. "If you can, get your battery in and checked out by a professional, to make sure that it's strong enough to face this cold weather, not only for this weekend, but throughout the winter. We'll likely get much colder throughout the winter. Get your battery in and get it checked. The typical life span of a car battery is about three to five years."

AAA members can request a visit from a AAA mobile battery service technician who will test their battery and replace it on-site, if necessary. Also, keep your gas tank at least half-full to avoid gas line freeze-up. Use your mobile devices when you are stopped to give you the best idea of how things are where you are going.

"It's important to stay up on road and weather conditions," Steward said. "KDOT has their <a href="https://www.kandrive.gov/@-99.86957,38.77164,7?show=roadReports,constructionReports,trafficSpeeds,winterDriving,oversizeLoads,stationsAlert,weatherRadar">KanDrive site</a>, or they also have a mobile app with that same information. We also recommend loading a good weather app with live radar, so you can keep up with where the storm is in relationship to where you are headed and hopefully avoid the worst of the storm."

Hazardous storms and inclement weather are a factor in an average of nearly half a million crashes and more than 2,200 traffic crash deaths nationwide every winter, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.&nbsp;
