Salina Presbyterian Manor invites community to help support residents financially with event

An encore showing of “Prairie Prophecy” will be presented at 1:00 pm Sunday, October 26, in Sams Chapel on the Kansas Wesleyan campus, as part the 2025 Homecoming celebration.

“Prairie Prophecy” is a feature-length documentary about alumnus Wes Jackson ’58, a KWU professor emeritus and co-founder of <a href="https://landinstitute.org/">The Land Institute. </a>

Jackson was instrumental in developing <a href="https://landinstitute.org/our-work/perennial-crops/kernza/#:~:text=Kernza%20has%20a%20unique%2C%20nutty%20flavor%20and,as%20an%20appealing%20new%20ingredient%20for%20markets.">Kernza</a>, which has been introduced as a sustainable alternative to annual grain crops and can be used much as wheat.

The documentary, which was produced by Perennial Films, had its world premiere in Salina in April.

The screening is free and open to the public. 

It is sponsored by KWU’s Community Resilience Hub and Kansas Wesleyan.

ABILENE - The national morning show&nbsp;Fox &amp; Friends&nbsp;featured Abilene on Friday morning in its&nbsp;Main Street U.S.A.&nbsp;segment, sharing with more than 1.3 million viewers why Abilene continues to shine as one of America’s Best Small Towns to Visit.

Former Abilene resident and&nbsp;Fox &amp; Friends&nbsp;co-host, Steve Doocy returned home to highlight the people, places and pride that make Abilene special.

More than 200 residents lined the streets for the live broadcast, which showcased the community’s historic downtown, locally owned businesses, and patriotic spirit.

Filming began at Little Ike Park and followed a route along NW 3rd Street and Buckeye Avenue, wrapping up at Amanda’s Bakery &amp; Bistro. Viewers were introduced to several Abilene businesses, including RHV Do It Best Hardware, Cypress Bridge Candle Co., Great Plains Manufacturing, Rawhide Portable Corral, Thunder Struck Bumpers, Holm Automotive Center, Robson Oil Company and the National Greyhound Association—plus a few four-legged stars, the greyhounds themselves.

Adding to the excitement, 54 members of the Abilene High School Marching Band performed on their day off from school, helping Abilene sound its best. Mary Jean Eisenhower, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s granddaughter, joined the celebration and presented Doocy with a Key to the City.

“This morning’s broadcast was an incredible opportunity to share Abilene’s story with a national audience,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau. “The energy was contagious and reminded me just how special our town truly is. The best part? We’re already receiving requests for visitor information, and local businesses are getting calls and orders for products!”

Despite the early hour and rain, Abilene’s enthusiasm never faded. Residents and visitors filled sidewalks, waved flags and signs, and proudly showed why Abilene is known for its charm and patriotic pride.

The Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau coordinated the event in partnership with&nbsp;Fox &amp; Friends&nbsp;producers, community volunteers and local businesses. “Fox & Friends” Main Street U.S.A. segment shines national spotlight on Abilene

GREAT BEND - The Great Bend Fire Department has officially opened ticket sales for its 50/50 raffle and is inviting the public to its third annual Holiday Extravaganza on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Great Bend Events Center.

Tickets for the 50/50 raffle run $5 per entry and can be purchased now until the Extravaganza by contacting the fire department at (620) 793-4145 or emailing sedwards@greatbendks.net. The winner of the 50/50 raffle does not have to be present at the Extravaganza to win. All proceeds benefit the fire department’s social and charity fund which provide scholarships, Christmas presents for those in need, honor flights to veterans and donations to organizations such as Kans 4 Kids.

"This event helps our social and charity fund give back too many local organizations throughout the city," said GBFD Engineer/AEMT Skyler Edwards. "Without this fundraiser, these donations would not be possible, so we really appreciate all who participate in our 50/50 raffle and come out and support our Extravaganza. We are excited and look forward to hosting another successful event this year."

Doors open for the Extravaganza at 5 p.m. beginning with a social hour and cash bar serviced by Dry Lake Brewery. Tickets for raffle prizes will be also available to purchase for $1 each during this time. Boots Style BBQ will serve dinner at 6 p.m. where attendees will have their choice of pulled pork, pulled chicken or brisket to dine on with sides of cheesy potatoes and green beans. Live music will begin at 7 p.m. with the Colorado Keys Dueling Pianos playing until the end of the night.&nbsp;

Tickets for the event run $40 per person and can be purchased&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.tickettailor.com/events/gbfdsocialcharity/1846873">online</a>&nbsp;or at the door. Attendance is capped at 600, so buying ahead of time is advised to secure a spot.&nbsp;

The Salina Symphony’s "Fireworks" concert will light up the Stiefel Theatre Sunday, November 9, at 4:00 pm with brilliant color and vibrant energy.

"Rainbow Body" by Christopher Theofanidis opens this colorful program with its gorgeous melodies and shimmering textures, leading into the profound journey of Strauss’ poignant “Death and Transfiguration.”

Be among the first to experience the vibrant energy of Carolina Calvache’s new “Hojarasca for Trombone and Orchestra,” showcasing principal trombonist Dan Hinman. The piece was co-commissioned by the Salina Symphony and premiered in March by the Jackson (Mich.) Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will conclude with the hypnotic crescendo of Ravel’s captivating “Bolero,” promising an unforgettable concert experience.

Hinman’s performance experience spans a diverse spectrum. He currently serves as principal trombone of the Salina Symphony. In high demand as a performer, he has enjoyed recent performances with the Kansas City Symphony and Wichita Symphony as well as several other regional performances as a soloist and in ensembles.

Hinman is assistant professor of trombone at Kansas State University, where he teaches applied trombone, the KSU Trombone Choir, and other academic music courses.

The 10th annual Fe for a Cure Race/Walk, held September 20, celebrated a&nbsp; “Decade of Hope” and raised a record-breaking $79,183 to support patients at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center. 

Registrations, memorial/honorary ribbon sales, donations and raffle items raised&nbsp; $39,183. A recent matching contribution of $40,000 from an anonymous donor also has been received.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Over the years a total of $400,729 has been raised by Fe for a Cure. Thanks to support from the&nbsp; event’s sponsors, 100% of the funds raised are directed to enhance patient programs and services at the&nbsp; Cancer Center.&nbsp;

Fe for a Cure 2025 also set records for participation with 1,214 registered and 173 volunteers&nbsp; assisting on race day. Runners came from 64 Kansas communities, eight states and one person even registered from Canada.&nbsp;

“You can clearly see the impact cancer has on our community each and every year at Fe for a&nbsp; Cure,” said Marla McElderry, executive director at the Salina Regional Health Foundation. “We’re&nbsp; pleased to see this event continue to grow in support of patients from across the area undergoing&nbsp; treatment at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center.”&nbsp;

A Corporate Challenge is held in conjunction with Fe for a Cure that recognizes area Small, Mid-sized and Large businesses with the most participants. Thirty-nine different businesses participated in the Corporate Challenge this year. Winners were Jim’s Formal Wear, Small Business, 23 participants; Blue Beacon, Mid-sized Business, 70 participants; and Great Plains Manufacturing, Large Business, 138 participants.&nbsp;

Salina man arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman at a home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Thursday at around 10:45 pm, SPD received a 9-1-1 call from a home address in north Salina, regarding a domestic violence incident.

Allegedly, a 42-year old female reported she was assaulted by a 32-year old man identified as, Nalo Bishop. The victim and Bishop are reportedly acquainted.

SPD stated an argument occurred and Bishop proceeded to throw CD player towards her. As a result, she received injuries to her face.&nbsp;

Police added the woman was pushed to the ground and strangled by Bishop.

Officers arrived after the incident and arrested Bishop. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of Aggravated Domestic Battery.

It was unsure if the victim needed or received medical treatment.

Domestic violence incident results in arrest

Saturday, October 25 marks the 29th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which will take place at locations across the country. This event is organized by the&nbsp;Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and along with law enforcement agencies, will collect and safely dispose of tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs that are unneeded, unwanted or expired.

In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 19.8 million pounds (10,000 tons) of medication from circulation since its inception.

Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at nearly 4,500 drop-off locations nationwide.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office will be participating on Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at three locations.

UPDATE: Salina Police seeking tips regarding suspect damaging two vehicles

SALINE COUNTY - A harvester combine was destroyed after catching on fire in Saline County.&nbsp;

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, on Wednesday, October 22 at around 5:00 pm, deputies and Rural Fire District (RFD) 5 were dispatched to the 4900 block of E. North St., after a John Deere combine was reportedly on fire.

RFD 5 quickly extinguished the fire and nobody was injured.

The owner of the combine, Ricky Leister, stated he was harvesting soybeans, heard “popping sounds” and the combines hydraulic fluid caught fire.

Total loss of value was $40,000 and approximately $400 worth of soybeans were burnt/destroyed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fire hydrants and water tower approved to be repainted at Salina City Commission Oct. 27 meeting

Visit Salina is proud to announce that SculptureTour Salina has been honored by the Travel Industry Association of Kansas (TIAK) with the prestigious Community Collaboration Award at the 2025 Kansas Tourism Conference.&nbsp;

The TIAK Awards celebrate outstanding tourism marketing initiatives that strengthen the travel and tourism industry throughout Kansas. Each year, these awards honor the most innovative and impactful efforts among TIAK members, many of which serve as destination marketing organizations to Kansas communities. 

Categories include: Community Awareness, Community Collaboration, Events, Online Marketing, Print Marketing and Visitor Guide.&nbsp;

SculptureTour Salina (STS), now in its 15th year, is a rotating, public art program that engages residents and visitors alike. Viewers can vote for their favorite sculpture by using the ballots found near most mid-block crosswalk structures in silver boxes on Santa Fe Avenue. The sculpture with the most votes receives The People’s Choice Award and is purchased by the City of Salina and will be located permanently in Salina for the public to enjoy.

“Since its inception, public and private purchases from SculptureTour have resulted in more than 45 sculptures on display throughout the city, making a positive statement to residents and visitors," said Salina Arts and Humanities Executive Director, Brad Anderson.&nbsp;

Showers and thunderstorms expected to return to Salina this weekend

HUTCHINSON - Prisoners' Rights Kansas will be holding a public rally for the civil rights of all prisoners and protesting against the 'use of solitary confinement in Kansas detention facilities' on Saturday, October 25 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in Hutchinson.

The protest will be held at the Northwest Corner of the intersection, Severance Street and Cole Avenue across from the Southwest corner watchtower of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility and will march Severance Avenue from Avenue G to Avenue C.&nbsp;

Members of the public are welcome to rally with families of the incarcerated, citizens and learn more about the ways of extended solitary confinement.

According to Interim Spokesperson of Prisoners' Rights Kansas, Ellen Johnson, she stated the purpose of this protest is to speak against the "excessive use of solitary confinement in Kansas prisons." She added that it "violates the eighth amendment against cruel and unusual punishment."

"The mental and physical health of prisoners are being affected, which interferes with rehabilitation," said Johnson. "Kansas families know that the prison system can do better, and are gathering in Hutchinson to urge the Department of Corrections to rehabilitate itself, and rethink the way prisoners in Kansas are treated."

LINDSBORG - Governor Kelly and Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Secretary Calvin Reed, announced on Wednesday a total of 9 new modernization and expansion highway projects.

Lindsborg being one of the 9 districts receiving this benefit, where it was announced reconstruction will be taking place on K-4 and Bethany Drive. According to KDOT, this project will create a more functional and welcoming entrance into the city from I-135. In addition, it will remove an aging bridge, eliminating the long-term need for maintenance at this location. 

The investment towards Lindsborg was listed to be a total of $11 million.&nbsp;

These projects, which represent a total investment of more than $442 million, are moving into the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE) construction pipeline. This is the fourth round of projects moved to KDOT’s construction pipeline under the Kelly administration’s bipartisan 10-year IKE program.&nbsp;

“The IKE program is a powerful engine for economic growth and a testament to our commitment to building a stronger, safer Kansas,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “Since the program's inception, we have worked diligently to advance important infrastructure modernization and expansion projects to the construction stage, ensuring a safe, prosperous future for Kansans in rural, suburban, and urban communities across the state.” 

Secretary Reed also highlighted the importance of partnerships and community involvement in the IKE program’s continued success.&nbsp;

“Communities across the state recognize the benefits that a well-planned and funded transportation system brings,”&nbsp;Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Calvin&nbsp;Reed said. “When we listen to and collaborate with Kansans directly, we can have confidence that these investments will deliver meaningful and long-lasting benefits for all.”&nbsp;

Joining Governor Kelly and Secretary Reed were stakeholders representing several of the selected projects, including Lindsborg Mayor Clark Shultz, Osborne County Commissioner Craig Pottberg and Wichita Public Works Director Gary Janzen.&nbsp;

Governor Kelly highlighted that KDOT has met its mid-program targets for each of its six geographic regions, demonstrating the program’s success in advancing projects in every corner of the state. &nbsp;

Lindsborg receives highway reconstruction investment from the state of $11 million

On Friday, November 14th, Saturday, November 15th at 7:00 pm, and Sunday November 16th at 2:30pm, the&nbsp;Salina Central Mustangs Theatre Troupe 639 &amp; the Salina Central Jazz Band will present Catch Me If You Can (the musical).

Based on the hit film and the incredible true story, Catch Me If You Can is the high-flying musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught.

Nominated for four Tony awards, including Best Musical, this delightfully entertaining show was created by a Tony Award-winning "dream team," with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a swinging score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray).

Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager, Frank Abagnale, Jr., runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer – living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. Salina Central theatre arts and music departments present: "Catch Me If You Can"

Salina Police are currently searching for a suspect, who reportedly broke two windows on two separate vehicles.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Wednesday at around 11:00 pm, a report was made regarding two vehicles being damaged by a suspect in the 500 block of S. 9th Street.

Reportedly, a 46-year old female stated she saw a suspect breaking two windows of a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage in her driveway. When the woman called out the suspect, the individual then broke another set of windows on a 2016 Honda Odyssey parked in her driveway.

Afterwards, the suspect ran away north of 9th Street.

There is no identification of the suspect at this time.

SPD stated the suspect was wearing baggy blue jeans, black hoodie, a silver halloween mask with bulging eyes and carrying a crowbar or bat.

Salina Police searching for suspect damaging two vehicles

Disturbance at a Salina home leads to a male suspect assaulting a man and threatening two women, before his arrest.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Wednesday at around 8:50 pm, officers arrested a male suspect who allegedly assaulted a male in the 1200 block of Gypsum.

Before the arrest, SPD stated the suspect identified as 39-year old, Demetrius Carruthers and a 32-year old man were inside Carruthers' home, when a disturbance occurred between them.&nbsp;

Reportedly, Carruthers allegedly swung a knife at the victim. The victim then exited the home and ran away, as Carruthers chased after him. SPD stated the victim then fell on the ground and Carruthers began kicking and hitting him.

Afterwards, neighbors heard the commotion and two women told Carruthers they were going to call the police. Carruthers then threatened the two by saying he was going to "shoot them and the police." He then returned to his home.

Officers then arrived to Carruthers' home and was arrested him without incident. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of:

Aggravated Battery, Criminal Threat (2 requested charges) and Intimidation of a Witness (2 requested charges).

The victim was transported to Salina Regional Health Center for injuries he sustained.
