HUTCHINSON - The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with city officials, is exploring the potential to attract a next-generation nuclear power facility to Hutchinson — a move that could bring major economic and infrastructure growth to the region.

The interest follows a September 23 announcement from TerraPower, a company founded by Bill Gates, which signed a memorandum of understanding with Evergy and the Kansas Department of Commerce to build a new Natrium nuclear reactor somewhere within Evergy’s Kansas service area.

Upon learning of that partnership, Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas contacted Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber President and CEO Debra Teufel to see whether Hutchinson might be a viable candidate. The two began early discussions about how to position the city as an attractive option for such a high-tech energy project.

Teufel said the inquiry is part of the city’s ongoing effort to identify forward-looking economic development opportunities. The Chamber and city have now set a target date of December 1 to identify potential industrial sites near existing 345-kilovolt power transmission lines — a key factor in energy infrastructure development.

While no site has been selected, Teufel said Hutchinson already has several advantages, including land zoned for heavy industry, available water capacity, and highway and rail access capable of supporting large-scale construction and supply needs. She also cited USD 308’s Career &amp; Technical Education Academy as a resource that could help train local students for both construction and long-term technical jobs.

Hutchinson City Council member, Jon Richardson said the council is open to learning more about the opportunity, noting Hutchinson’s strong fire protection rating and existing utility systems as selling points. Richardson added that the council wants to better understand both the technology and community perspectives before any decisions are made.

The Natrium reactor represents a new generation of nuclear technology, using liquid sodium instead of water as a coolant — a design aimed at increasing safety and efficiency. A prototype of the reactor is currently under construction in Wyoming.

Teufel emphasized that projects like this, along with Evergy’s planned natural gas power plant south of Hutchinson, could serve as catalysts for significant growth along the K-96 corridor.

“Industry follows power, water and land,” she said. “We have all those ingredients right here.”

While discussions remain in the early stages, Chamber and city officials agree that the collaboration itself reflects Hutchinson’s readiness to pursue innovative industries and energy-driven development opportunities.

The church stated they are honored to be a recipient of this prestigious grant that will help stabilize the building used for worship, music, community events and more.

Bethany Lutheran Church is one of 30 organizations across the US to receive a total of over $8.7 million in grant funding. Thanks to the funds, it helps the church provide training, planning grants, technical assistance, capacity-building support and capital grants to congregations of all faiths.

Lindsborg historic church receives $500,000 grant for building support

Home developers giving buyers the opportunity to custom make homes, have officially completed 22 lots at a new housing development east of Salina.

<a href="https://coolconstructionllc.com/lots/">Cool Construction LLC.</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday celebrated its completion of&nbsp; infrastructure at Cedar Point, neighboring the Salina Municipal Golf Course and is now ready for construction.&nbsp;

Co-owner Stephanie Cool stated they have sold a total of 7 lots in Cedar Point.

Since these homes are customized, Stephanie commented some of them will vary in size with whatever the buyer wants to do.

Stephanie and Kevin Cool established&nbsp;Cedar Ridge Development LLC in 2021, acquiring&nbsp;33 residential lots platted as Cedar Ridge (Phases 2 &amp; 3) and 22 lots platted as Cedar Point. The Cool's offer&nbsp;a variety of building sites ranging from 10,800 square feet up to 29,000 square feet, with prices starting at $43,000.

The Cool's recently designed and established a speculation home that is currently on sale, going for zero entry. The address is on 1529 Cedar Point Place.

Home developers allowing buyers to customize houses celebrate completion of 22 new lots, 7 sold

The current log jam along the Smoky Hill River near Bill Burke and Indian Rock Parks is progressing towards completion, as the City of Salina are awaiting FEMA federal funding.

It has already been a week, since the Salina Commissioners approved project costs of <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/a7c9bfa0-1573-46f0-80b5-236552b0ada9">$1.2 million due to the recent flooding events.</a>&nbsp;

City Manager, Jacob Wood stated they have not heard anything back from FEMA to help cover disaster relief funding from July's and September's flooding events.

If this were to be approved, then a total of $714,330.17 from July and September's costs for disaster relief would be shared as follows:

Federal = 75%, State = 10%, City = 15%

Based on $714,330.17 preliminary cost estimates and 85% disaster funding, the City could receive $607,180 in disaster relief funding. 

Disaster relief funding is based on actual costs. This amendment does not include the costs for channel or intake structure repair. However, it is undetermined at this time if those expenses will be reimbursable. 

The work is estimated to be completed by the end of November 2025.&nbsp;

In the event work is completed sooner, the cost savings will be shared with the city.

🎥 Log jam progressing, FEMA funding still pending

Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) announced with heavy hearts that it has recently said goodbye to Andrea, the Zoo’s beloved female Amur tiger. Over the past several months, Andrea had been under close observation by RHZ’s animal care team and veterinary staff due to age-related declining health. Despite dedicated professional care and close monitoring, Andrea was experiencing an overall decline in her quality of life. 

After careful consideration, the team made the compassionate decision to humanely euthanize Andrea, ensuring her comfort and dignity in her final moments.

Born April 28, 2008, at Saint Louis Zoological Park, Andrea was 17 years and 5 months old. The average life span of Amur tigers is typically 10–15 years, and slightly longer when in the care of humans.

Andrea transferred to Rolling Hills Zoo in 2016 from the Indianapolis Zoo under a breeding recommendation by the Species Survival Plan® (SSP), a program that works cooperatively with Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoos to maintain healthy, genetically diverse animal populations. The SSP carefully evaluates the entire Amur tiger population across participating institutions and makes breeding recommendations aimed at preserving a 97% genetic diversity within the managed population.

During her time at Rolling Hills Zoo, Andrea gave birth to three cubs, having previously welcomed one cub while at the Indianapolis Zoo. She played an important role in supporting the growth and sustainability of the Amur tiger population within AZA zoos — an incredible contribution to the long-term conservation of this critically endangered species.

“Andrea was a great companion to the other tigers living at RHZ. She was also an attentive mother to the three cubs that were born here. She easily captured the hearts of anyone that had the privilege of taking care of her,” shared Vickie Musselman, RHZ Registrar.

“Andrea was very patient with the keepers when it came to training, especially those just starting out,” said Kira Noda, RHZ Associate Curator. “She always had a calm and confident demeanor in everything that she did. My favorite activity with Andrea was feeding time —

as she would sit patiently waiting for you to feed her. Andrea will be greatly missed by everyone that has cared for her while at Rolling Hills Zoo.”

Andrea’s presence, strength, and gentle spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her and those who visit Rolling Hills Zoo. Her legacy lives on through her cubs and the continued conservation work of zoos around the world.

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Tuesday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Ford Edge driven by Irene M.&nbsp;Charles, 57, Gypsum, attempted to enter into southbound traffic from Interstate 135 southbound on ramp at the Lindsborg. The driver failed to yield to traffic and side swiped 2018 Peterbilt semi driven by Zachary P.&nbsp;Vytlacil, 37, Moundridge.

EMS transported Charles to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; Vytlacil was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

After a Salina woman was arrested for the requested charge of Domestic Violence Battery, the public has commented on the report the Salina Police Department (SPD) released regarding the incident.

According to SPD, Estelle Key (31) was arrested on Sunday, October 19 for allegedly 'slapping' a 36-year old man.&nbsp;

Chayla Parsons, sister of Key told Salina Post other details regarding this incident. 

Parsons stated the 36-year old man named, Randy Hulsey was at Big Nose Kate's and was picked up by his 15-year old son, instead of Key. Parsons added, Key was at work during this time.

Hulsey's son then dropped him off at Key's house. Parsons added that Hulsey was 'intoxicated' when he arrived. Key then returned home to obtain one of her children's belongings. 

Furthermore, Key was actively trying to leave the home with four children (ages 1, 12, 6 &amp; 7) of her own that were present. As this was happening, Parsons said Key was actively trying to get in a vehicle to leave with her children, but Hulsey grabbed the 1-year old child from the vehicle.

Key then proceeded to try and retrieve the child from Hulsey, which started the confrontation. Officers arrived shortly afterwards.

Parsons added that Key and Hulsey do not have any children together.

Parsons stated the children are okay, and Key has been released from the Saline County Jail.&nbsp;

Parsons stated the 36-year old man named, Randy Hulsey was at Big Nose Kate's and was picked up by his 15-year old son, instead of Key. Parsons added, Key was at work during this time.Hulsey's son then dropped him off at Key's house. Parsons added that Hulsey was 'intoxicated' when he arrived. Key then returned home to obtain one of her children's belongings. Furthermore, Key was actively trying to leave the home with four children (ages 1, 12, 6 &amp; 7) of her own that were present. As this was happening, Parsons said Key was actively trying to get in a vehicle to leave with her children, but Hulsey grabbed the 1-year old child from the vehicle.Key then proceeded to try and retrieve the child from Hulsey, which started the confrontation. Officers arrived shortly afterwards.Parsons added that Key and Hulsey do not have any children together.Parsons stated the children are okay, and Key has been released from the Saline County Jail.&nbsp;

We need some common sense&nbsp;on the board. Let's make some changes, get out and vote.

The preliminary hearing for the ongoing case of Kayla Errebo (32), has been rescheduled for next year.

According to the Saline County Attorney's Office, the preliminary hearing that was set for Tuesday has officially been rescheduled to January 5, 2026.

The hearing will be held at the Salina-Saline County building&nbsp;(300 W Ash St), Room 301 at 9:00 am.

Errebo was arrested back on Friday, August 8th for a&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/3e716804-4732-43e4-a3cf-086e2bdc9859">head-on collision</a>&nbsp;into Mark Sommerfeld (61) and Deanna Sommerfeld (55) on a rural Saline County road.&nbsp;Errebo fled from the crash site, but deputies located and arrested her at an address in Ellsworth.&nbsp;

She is booked into the Saline County Jail and is currently facing requested charges of: 

Murder in the second degree, Failure to report an injury accident, Circumvention of ignition interlock device and Probation violation.

Errebo also plead guilty back on October 2024 for&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/fca0f97b-593e-429a-8d0d-ebba84210fe7">fleeing and eluding law enforcement, driving under the influence (DUI) and leaving the scene of an accident.</a>

Scammers deceive three people in Salina seeking US citizenship to send over $7,000.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Monday afternoon, three people seeking US citizenship visited the Salina Police station regarding a scam.

Reportedly back in January 2025, they were contacted via email by scammers claiming to be 'immigration lawyers.' These scammers advised they could 'assist them with their immigration status.'

Furthermore, the victims received various phone calls, followed by requests of money for filing fees and other reasons since the first initial contact in January.

The victims were listed as two 49-year old females, who lost $2,180 and a 34-year old male, losing $5,550.

SPD told Salina Post, they want to inform the community to be aware of scams, such as this crime.&nbsp;

An abandoned UTV found by Saline County deputies, is now reported to be stolen.

"A possible owner came forward, and at this time&nbsp;it appears&nbsp;to have been a theft," said Undersheriff Brent Melander.&nbsp;

Get ready for a special performance this weekend at the Stiefel Theatre as "The Bacon Brothers," Kevin and Michael Bacon will perform on Saturday, October 25.

Starting at 7:30 pm, the band will play a genre-blending mix of folk, rock, soul and country. The brothers are currently on tour playing songs from their fan beloved albums and recent 2024 release, "Ballad of the Brothers."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Michael told Salina Post, growing up in the Bacon household was a "creative household."

"We always played music together. We were in a household that only valued creativity and did not care about anything else," said Michael.

After the band was formed in '95, Kevin and Michael started playing in clubs before earning a record deal. Michael added they make their music with 'freedom' and for it to be as 'natural as possible.' This is evident with the diversity that shows up in their discography.

Michael plays a variety of instruments such as acoustic/electric guitar, cello, autoharp, harmonica and tambourine. Kevin plays a large quantity as well ranging from guitar, percussion and harmonica.

"We like it to be all over the place," said Michael. "We just go: here is the song, how do we put it together in the best way and that is the reason we are all over the place."

"When we play the band live, we have an energy and a groove, because we a are feeling it," said Kevin. "We love live music."

Before Kevin got into the film industry, he started as a live theatre actor. He describes what he loves about live performances, is what he has acquired from doing live theatre.

"What I loved about it, was that feeling of being with a group of people, the audience and just sharing this one night with them that is never going to be exactly the same," Kevin said.

With "Ballad of the Brothers" being the 12th studio album, the brothers don't seem to be slowing down and cease from giving their full effort. Kevin commented he treats every song like if its his last.

"Everytime I write a song, I think to myself that this is the last one and its astounding to me that we have that many records of original music," said Kevin. "I am really proud of Ballad of the Brothers, I think it has some really cool stuff on it."

On Saturday, doors opens at 6:30 pm.

The Bacon Brothers set to perform at the Stiefel Theatre: Insights from Kevin & Michael

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Hall of Fame is proud to announce three prominent Salina businesspersons scheduled to be inducted into the 2025 class. 

Dr. William Eugene Mowery (Pioneer Category, 1858-1945); Richard ‘Dick’ Renfro (Historic Category, 1946-1999); and Larry Britegam&nbsp; (Contemporary Category, 2000-present).&nbsp;

In addition to the Business Hall of Fame Inductees, the Business Hall of Fame Task Force is excited to announce the Spirit of Salina Award recipient. 

This award, which was created in 2022, was developed to recognize an emerging entrepreneur in Saline County. The entrepreneur selected will represent the “best of the best” in terms of&nbsp; overcoming obstacles, believing in their dreams, taking risks and persisting as a small business owner. They embody a spirit-the entrepreneurial spirit of Salina – and those that have come before. 

This year’s recipient will be announced at the induction ceremony.&nbsp;

The induction ceremony will be held Thursday, November 13th from noon - 1:30 pm, at the Salina Country Club (2101 E Country Club Rd). Doug Girod, Chancellor of the University of Kansas, will be the featured speaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Salina Business Hall of Fame is celebrating its 20th Anniversary, having been established by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Halloween has a fun side and an eerie, spooky side. For those who lean toward the eerie side, the Kansas Wesleyan Theatre Department is presenting the dramatic version of “Dracula” during Homecoming and the week after.

Play times and dates are 7:00 pm Thursday, October 23, Friday, October 24 and Friday, October 31.&nbsp;Other times include 2:00 pm&nbsp;Sunday, October 26 and Saturday, November 1 in the Fitzpatrick Auditorium on the KWU campus.

“Dracula” is a classic story of horror, the quintessential exploration of good vs. evil that has inspired numerous filmmakers and theatre lovers to adapt the novel into screenplays and scripts, said Karen Babcock Brassea, director and KWU associate professor of Theatre Arts. This new adaptation by Steven Dietz restores the suspense and seduction of Bram Stoker’s classic novel of the same name to the stage.

The suspense and seduction of the story is one reason Brassea chose the play, despite avoiding the horror genre in general. This version will have blood and gore, she said.

“Perhaps it boils down to fascination and a challenge to express something outside my comfort zone,” Brassea said of her choice.

What do you feel are the 3 most important issues facing the Salina Education community that the USD 305 School Board should focus on?

Student Achievement and Success – These items, including test scores, daily absences, kindergarten readiness, and graduation rate, are reviewed by the board as we make budget decisions and set goals for the district.Staff Recruitment &amp; Retention – This is a concern everywhere. Any success we&nbsp;achieve here will likely be replicated elsewhere, as all school districts are competing for the same shrinking pool of talent. Work must be done to bolster the perception of teaching as a career, and it must be done at a higher level than just Salina Public Schools.Budget Pressure – An ever-tightening budget and an ever-growing to-do list from the state legislature and our community are on a collision course for disaster. District staff and the board have worked for many years to maintain services for students with ever-increasing costs each year and stagnant funding streams. State funding keeps pace with inflation, but the decline in the number of students in our community will necessitate tough decisions.&nbsp;

What motivated you to run for office and how does that motivation relate to the top 3 issues you want to focus on if elected?

When I first ran and was elected to this position in 2017, our public school system was in the midst of unrest with a messy leadership transition, an interim superintendent, and a lack of trust between the board, district leadership, and staff. Rebuilding partnerships between the Salina Public Schools board, district, and building leadership and staff has brought consistency and trust back to our system. I strive to bring steady leadership with a focus on student success and a commitment to making sound fiscal decisions with the resources devoted to education by our community.

If elected, how will you ensure that your decisions and actions put the best interests of the education community first?

What life experiences have best prepared you to serve as a school board member, and how will those experiences guide your work in this role?

We have a diverse board with a range of backgrounds and perspectives, and we work together to lead Salina Public Schools. Discussion and compromise are imperative in building leadership and trust. Having been a student in this school system and now a business owner in this community, I only want to see success for our students and, in turn, Salina.

 </figure>By: GABE GRANT<h2>What do you feel are the 3 most important issues facing the Salina Education community that the USD 305 School Board should focus on?</h2>Student Achievement and Success – These items, including test scores, daily absences, kindergarten readiness, and graduation rate, are reviewed by the board as we make budget decisions and set goals for the district.Staff Recruitment &amp; Retention – This is a concern everywhere. Any success we&nbsp;achieve here will likely be replicated elsewhere, as all school districts are competing for the same shrinking pool of talent. Work must be done to bolster the perception of teaching as a career, and it must be done at a higher level than just Salina Public Schools.Budget Pressure – An ever-tightening budget and an ever-growing to-do list from the state legislature and our community are on a collision course for disaster. District staff and the board have worked for many years to maintain services for students with ever-increasing costs each year and stagnant funding streams. State funding keeps pace with inflation, but the decline in the number of students in our community will necessitate tough decisions.&nbsp;<h2>What motivated you to run for office and how does that motivation relate to the top 3 issues you want to focus on if elected?</h2>When I first ran and was elected to this position in 2017, our public school system was in the midst of unrest with a messy leadership transition, an interim superintendent, and a lack of trust between the board, district leadership, and staff. Rebuilding partnerships between the Salina Public Schools board, district, and building leadership and staff has brought consistency and trust back to our system. A female was arrested after trespassing a homeowner's property, when told to leave.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Saturday, October 18 at around 8:00 am, a homeowner found a woman sleeping on their back porch in the 200 block of N. 10th St.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the homeowner knew the woman and advised her to leave. However, the woman returned to the home shortly after.

Officers arrived and arrested 50-year old, Verlana DeLorenzo. DeLorenzo was booked into the Saline County Jail for two requested charges of Trespassing.

A woman having outstanding warrants out of Saline County, allegedly resists officers before her arrest.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday, October 19 at around 8:00 am, officers in the 400 block of S. Santa Fe, noticed a woman around the area who had outstanding warrants in Saline County.

The woman walked towards the area of 12th Street and Morrison, where the officers were able to speak with her.&nbsp;

Afterwards, officers attempted to arrest her, but she allegedly resisted. Officers eventually arrested 25-year old, Mariah Peterson.

Peterson was booked into the Saline County Jail for Interference with Law Enforcement and the warrants.&nbsp;

Salina Police arrested a man after he refused to leave a woman's home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 pm, officers were dispatched to north Salina after a woman called regarding a man who refused to leave her home.

Reportedly after the woman requested the man to leave, she locked herself inside the garage, because she did not feel safe.

It was determined both individuals were acquainted.

SPD stated the man threw a full beer can at the woman, missing her and hitting two officers at the scene.

Officers then arrested Tyler Wolf, 33 and booked him into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of Battery on Law Enforcement, Assault and Criminal Trespass.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Saturday, October 18 at around 3:00 pm, an officer on patrol noticed a male acting suspiciously after he exited a white Kia Soul in the&nbsp;500 block of N. 12th.

The officer then approached the man and found a woman inside the vehicle. It was determined the man had a protection from abuse order with the woman.Afterwards, the officer arrested Braiden Cooley, 25. During the arrest, it was also learned the vehicle was stolen out of Sedgwick County and displayed an altered tag.Cooley was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of Violation of Protection Order and Possession of Stolen Property.
