Saline County Jail Activity, Sept. 28

On Sept. 28, 1928, Scottish medical researcher Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first effective antibiotic.

In 1781, American forces in the Revolutionary War, backed by a French fleet, began their successful siege of Yorktown, Virginia.

In 1841, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow completed his poem “Excelsior.”

In 1850, flogging was abolished as a form of punishment in the U.S. Navy.

In 1920, eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. (All were acquitted at trial, but all eight were banned from the game for life.)

In 1924, three U.S. Army planes landed in Seattle, having completed the first round-the-world trip by air in 175 days.

In 1939, during World War II, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a treaty calling for the partitioning of Poland, which the two countries had invaded.

Today in History, Sept. 28

Between 1934 and 1943, over 1,600 pieces of public art were installed in post offices throughout the country – 29 in Kansas. These pieces have stood the test of time - eight decades of time. Join Kara Heitz as she delves into what these murals can tell us about Kansas during the Great Depression era and how they continue to speak to us today. She will explore these questions through the lens of New Deal art programs in Kansas. Heitz will give special attention to the murals created for the Salina Post Office, sharing the process and challenges and where the pieces might be now.&nbsp;

Kara Heitz is a historian and educator who engages in cultural history storytelling through documentaries, podcasts, and writing. She is a lecturer in the Liberal Arts department of the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), where she teaches courses on 20th-century American history, film and history, and critical studies.

Salina cardiologists to join Salina Regional Heart Center

​A few years after relocating here from Pennsylvania, a friend of mine dove into home ownership. &nbsp;Being extremely knowledgeable and passionate about birding and gardening, she decided to convert part of her front yard into a native plant pollinator garden. &nbsp;She had no problem with the plantings, but the city codes are giving her fits.

​There are numerous advantages to cultivating pollinator gardens instead of non-native grass and other decorative plantings. &nbsp;Plants like Black-Eyed Susans, Western Yarrow, Wild Bergamot (beebalm), Milkweed, and Kansas’ state flower–the sunflower– have deeper root networks, which help prevent soil erosion and reduce water runoff. &nbsp;They do not need to be mowed, saving energy and pollution. &nbsp;They are natural parts of Kansas’ ecosystem and do not spread invasively. &nbsp;Natives grow well without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. &nbsp;Many grow beautiful flowers. &nbsp;They also adapt better to our climate, requiring less watering.

​Pollinator gardens supply food to native birds and insects including hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, and native bees. &nbsp;In recent years, the population of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/species/invertebrates/monarch_butterfly/#:~:text=Monarchs%20have%20declined%2085%25%20in%20two%20decades.">monarchs</a>&nbsp;has declined alarmingly, which many experts attribute to agricultural pesticides and herbicides. &nbsp;All told, one third of our food requires pollination by insects.

​Unfortunately, native pollinator gardens violate many communities’ local ordinances. &nbsp;These old laws reflect the 1950s ideal of a suburban lawn. &nbsp;They incentivize the planting of nonnative grass which is mowed short and often treated with fertilizers. &nbsp;They also encourage or condone ornamental shrubs, trees, and other plants which are an invasive threat to our native Kansas plants. &nbsp;Such scourges include the Bradford Pear, the Eastern Red Cedar, the Tree of Heaven, and wintercreeper. &nbsp;I join legions of other homeowners spending countless weekends trying to remove these noxious pests. &nbsp;Farmers and ranchers do not like them, either.

​As for my friend, she won her dispute with the city, but only after cutting part of her beloved pocket prairie and compiling a thick packet of information for her hearing. &nbsp;She is now working with Emporia officials to update the local ordinances. &nbsp;Fortunately, she has a template. &nbsp;Active in Kansas and western Missouri, the Metro Area Regional Council (MARC) has prepared&nbsp;<a href="https://marc2.org/assets/environment/greeninfrastructure/FinalModelGIOrdinances_GouldEvans.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1yFBMEXakDcqC8_3GYA-wZ1WSx4iWpiF_-KlY3TxJ-1-_qnX6Sjk5TN9I">model legislation</a>&nbsp;to encourage native plants and pollinator gardens while still allowing communities to clean up true noxious weeds, abandoned lots, and unkempt yards. &nbsp;

​Our sensibilities need to change, too. This past April, a Kansas family<a href="https://shawneemissionpost.com/2023/04/11/overland-park-milkweed-198901/">&nbsp;got caught&nbsp;</a>between the city of Overland Park–which discourages such plantings, Johnson County–which encourages them, and their own neighbors. &nbsp;Many neighborhoods in Overland Park feature neatly-manicured lawns in tidy housing subdivisions along cul-de-sac streets. &nbsp;Neighbors must adjust their expectations of what looks beautiful. &nbsp;Lawns should be property maintained, but they need not resemble golf courses.

​These codes also reflect the needs of agriculture. For example, milkweed is a beneficial, beautiful, easy to grow native plant that pollinators love, but it is poisonous to cattle and horses. &nbsp;This is fine for farmers and ranchers, but the average suburban homeowner is not going to have cattle and horses in their yard! &nbsp;Some local codes still classify milkweed as a “noxious weed” even when planted in town. Fortunately, some Kansas local governments have started targeting actual noxious weeds such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2023-04-04/people-in-kansas-city-lawrence-and-topeka-you-can-get-a-good-tree-for-killing-a-bad-one">Bradford Pears</a>, which are highly invasive. Wichita is one of many communities expanding native plantings on public land including parks.

​New codes will allow beautiful, native, pollinator-friendly yards while still requiring that yards and lots be properly maintained. &nbsp;MARC’s model legislation is just what you need to start working on this in your own community– and your yard.​

Zoning Codes Should Allow Native Plants and Pollinator Gardens

Salina Area Technical College hit a major milestone this fall, with more than 1,000 students enrolled for the first time.

According to data collected for the Kansas Board of Regents on the 20th day of fall classes, Salina Tech has 1,007 students, up 150 from the 857 in the fall of 2022.

On a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis, enrollment jumped from 465 FTEs in 2022 to 568 this fall, crossing the 500 mark for the first time. FTEs are calculated by dividing the total number of credit hours students are enrolled in and dividing by 15.

In percentage terms, headcount increased 17.5 percent over last year, while FTEs were up 22.2 percent.

Over the past five years, Salina Tech’s headcount has grown by 28 percent, and FTEs have grown by 30.6 percent – again making Salina Tech the fastest-growing college in Kansas. Looking back 10 years, the number of students enrolled at Salina Tech has more than doubled, from 451 to 1,007.

Salina Tech President Greg Nichols said he was pleased with the growth and what it represents.

“Some of the growth is from new programs, such as Dental Hygiene,” Nichols said. “But lots of existing programs that had low enrollment -- such as Business Administrative Technology and Early Childhood Education – saw big surges.”

“It was great walking into classrooms the first day of class and seeing almost no empty chairs,” he added. “And full parking lots are a great thing to see.”

Nichols noted Student Services extensively updated the college’s admission processes over the past year, to maintain closer contact with applicants and guide them through the enrollment process.

“This meant a lot more work from our Admissions team,” Nichols said. “But it pays off when you see these numbers.”

Across Kansas, the state universities experienced an average enrollment increase of 1.7 percent. The state’s community colleges averaged a 1.1 percent increase, while the six technical colleges averaged an 8.6 percent increase in enrollment

The spirit themes include "Barbie" on Monday, "Rhyme without Reason" on Tuesday, "Frat Out" on Wednesday, "U.S.A." on Thursday and "Mustang" on Friday.

Each day allows students to dress up within the theme, from all in pink for Barbie on Monday to wearing school-themed clothing on Friday.

School staff will allow students to dress as they want within the school dress code.

Salina Central will parade through downtown at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, beginning at The Temple at 336 S. Santa Fe Ave. After the parade, the school will host a pep rally at 7 p.m. at Salina Stadium.

The royalty candidates will parade with other students, local businesses and organizations to show school spirit and excite students for the pep rally.

On Friday, Sept. 29, during the Salina Central High School football game against Valley Center High School, staff will coronate the winners during halftime.

This year's queen candidates at Salina Central include seniors Lydia Dong, Tyler Vidricksen, Azbey Peckham Callan Hall and Kendyl Gary. 

Salina Central's king candidates include Kyler Brecheisen, Gunnar Gross, Dez Gibson, Jameer Moore and Levi Losey. 

Each student stays involved in the school, varying from choral groups to sports.

Tyler Vidricksen is the daughter of Deby and Casey Vidricksen and sister to Hayden. After high school, Tyler plans on attending Kansas State University and is currently undecided on her major. While in high school, she participated in basketball, volleyball, softball, book club, and yearbook. She also served as Relay for Life captain for four years. Her favorite high school memory was going to the state basketball tournament her sophomore year and getting second place.


Dez Gibson is the son of Danielle Cranston and Greg Gibson and brother to Greg Gibson. After high school, Dez plans on attending college but is unsure of where at this point. While in high school, he participated in football and basketball all four years and track for 3 years. His favorite memory from high school was the Back to School dance during his sophomore year and playing against Salina South.


Lydia Dong is the daughter of Jonathan Dong and Jami Evan and sister to Kaili and Keryn. After high school, Lydia is planning on attending a university to major in pre-law. While in high school, she was involved in Vets, Maroons, wrestling and Softball. She is also the senior class STUCO treasurer and Mustang Media Producer. Her favorite high school memory was winning against a boy at the Salina South dual her freshman year and beating South for the eighth year in a row.


Kyler Brecheisen is the son of Rae Brecheisen and brother to Kinleigh (ken-lee) and Karlyn. After high school, Kyler is planning on getting his associate's degree in applied science for welding. While in high school, he participated in baseball all four years and is currently on the Maroons. His favorite high school memory was the home football games in the student section and riding to school with his sister.


Kendyl Gary is the daughter of Trish and Brandon Gary and the sister of Mason. After high school, Kendyl plans on attending a university and majoring in psychology with hopes of becoming an occupational therapist. While in high school, she participated in basketball, volleyball, and track. She also was a part of the maroons and yearbook. Her favorite high school memory was winning their first volleyball tournament this year at Wichita-North.


Levi Losey is the son of Troy and Monica Losey and brother to Logan and Lakyn (lay-ken). After high school, Levi plans on attending Kansas State University and majoring in agronomy. While in high school, he participated in football, basketball, and track. His favorite high school memory is going to the gym with his brother.

&nbsp;Azbey Peckham is the daughter of John and Jennifer Peckham and sister to Danielle and Hannah. After high school, Azbey plans to attend
the University of Kansas and major in elementary education. While in high school, she was involved in basketball and swimming. She participated in Scholars Bowl, Link, NHS, and book club and currently serves as the managing editor of the Pylon and the Stuco senior class
 vice president. Her favorite memory from high school was breaking the school record in the 100 butterfly and seeing the board get changed.


Jameer Moore is the son of Tammy Fairchild and Xavier Moore and brother to Quincy, Jazlyn, and Starlet. After high school, Jameer plans on attending a university to major in either mechanical engineering or drafting. He also plans to continue his football career in college. While in high school, he participated in football, track and field, and basketball. His favorite high school memory was beating Salina South.


Callan Hall is the daughter of Michael and Lisa Hall and sister to Griffin and Braxton. After high school, Callan plans to continue her twirling career at a Division One college and pursue a career in the medical field. While in high school, she participated in volleyball, basketball, track, student council, Relay for Life and Link. She is also active in the Ark Church Community. Callan was also awarded the All-League Honors in volleyball and basketball, the Hoby Leadership Award, and the I Dare You Leadership Award. She has also received 25 individual national titles and a world champion title with Shannon’s Star Twirling Club. Her favorite high school memory is the state basketball tournament her sophomore year and going 24-1 for the season.


Gunnar Gross is the son of Guy and Kathryn Gross and brother to Grayton and Kallia. After high school, Gunnar plans on playing football and wants to pursue a career in the medical field. In high school, he participated in football and basketball. Gunnar was awarded 1st team All-State non-senior, First Team all AVCTL in football 1x All-State and 2x all AVCTL in baseball. Gunnar is also active in the Ark church community. His favorite memory from high school is winning the
 regional playoff game in football last year and beating Salina South three years in a row.

Meet Cole, Big Brothers Big Sisters ‘Waitlist Wednesdays’ 

The Salina Police Department announced this afternoon that an arrest has been made in connection to the stolen vehicle and subsequent police chase that occurred Monday morning.&nbsp;

Sergeant Kyle Tonniges told Salina Post that on Tuesday officers arrested 38-year-old Brandon Craig Loder of Salina.&nbsp;

A suspect is still at large after stealing a vehicle and leading Salina Police officers on a Monday morning pursuit.&nbsp;

Salina Police Sergeant Tonniges said this morning that at approximately 9:20 a.m. Monday, an officer responded to the report of a stolen vehicle in the 300 block of E. Jewel Avenue. 

The vehicle's owner,&nbsp;Jenifer Holcomb, 48 of Salina, told SPD officers that sometime overnight, Sunday evening, her 2019 white Ford Fusion was stolen.&nbsp;

Tonniges said Holcomb did not identify any suspects that might have been responsible but she did say that she was missing one of her car keys.

"She wasn't quite sure how the car had been stolen. Then Monday night at about 1:18 a.m. We actually got some hits on our license plate readers," Tonngies said."The license plate readers read the stolen vehicle's tags near the intersection of Crawford Street and Centennial Ave."&nbsp;

An SPD officer located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it. The vehicle sped off heading southbound on Centennial, then east on Republic Avenues., and all around the neighborhoods along Broadway and Republic Avenues.

The pursuit reached speeds of approximately 71 mph and eventually came to a stop in the 900 block of Sheridan St. The driver then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.&nbsp;

"There was a passenger in the vehicle, and after speaking with the passenger and the owner of the vehicle, we were able to identify a suspect," Tonniges said. "We haven't located him yet but we are still searching for him."

Arrest made in connection to grand theft auto, high speed chase on Monday

The Salina Police Department is looking for the suspect who led officers on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph Monday night.&nbsp;

Salina Police Department Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said on Monday at approximately 9:27 p.m. an officer observed a vehicle with illegally tinted windows leaving the Kwik Star, 100 N. Broadway Avenue.&nbsp;

Tonniges said before the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it turned onto State Street, and then onto Interstate 135.&nbsp;

"The officer wasn't able to get the stop on until it exited the interstate," Tonniges said. "It went I-135 onto Crawford, officer tried to stop the vehicle at that point. The vehicle fled."

Tonniges said the officer pursued the vehicle east on Crawford Street and south on Sherman Street, reaching speeds of 100 mph.&nbsp;

Because the chase reached such high speeds, the officer involved decided to suspend the chase.&nbsp;

"However, later in the evening, officers did locate the car in the 300 block of East Kirwin," Tonniges said. 

Tonniges said officers have developed a suspect.

NWS-Wichita: Warm, dry conditions continue

Fort Riley’s Fall Apple Day Festival returns this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival, which is free and open to the public, is the largest annual event at Fort Riley and serves as the military installation’s open house.

Community members can get an up-close look at military helicopters, tanks, and other vehicles, watch demonstrations by the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard, military working dogs, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Soldiers, and the 1st Infantry Division combatives team, and enjoy musical performances, kid-friendly activities, and apple pie sales. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Visitors can park at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Ave., just off Huebner Road. Signs will direct visitors to the nearby festival grounds at Artillery Parade Field. Attractions and demonstrations will be located throughout Historic Main Post, including Artillery Parade Field, Tuttle Park, Sturgis Field, and Cavalry Parade Field. No pets or outside alcohol are allowed at the festival.

Fort Riley’s Survivor Outreach Services will be honoring the fallen with a song and balloon release in front of the main stage at 10 a.m.

Traffic is reduced to one lane on Henry Drive, near Marshall Army Airfield, due to work on the Kansas River bridge. Drivers can expect delays and may want to consider alternate routes.

On this episode of King in the Community, I sit down with Michelle Weis, executive director of the Saline County Emergency Management Department, to discuss the department's plan for preparedness.

This year, the department will take a new approach to its emergency training, utilizing a Dungeons and Dragons dice-rolling system to create unique and random scenarios.&nbsp;

The emergency management department will host an emergency exercise using the dice-rolling system on Oct. 19.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Peabody, public water supply system located in Marion County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

-Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water

-Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker

-If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.-Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.-Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested.

-Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on June 22 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure due to valve replacement. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.
