On Friday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The Salina Emergency Aid/Food Bank received a phone call asking if they would accept a free delivery of 37,000 pounds of potatoes from Idaho.

"Of course, we said yes," said Salina Food Bank Executive Director Karen Couch. "It is the great potato giveaway, and we'd love for everyone in the community and surrounding area to come grab boxes and boxes of potatoes from us."

The giveaway, dubbed the "Great Potato Giveaway, " was located at the food bank's parking lot at 255 South Chicago Street in Salina.

"The goal was to clear space before another semi-load of food arrives on Wednesday," Couch said.

On Monday morning, it took only three and a half hours to find homes for 14 pallets of potatoes.

"If you missed your chance to grab some, we still have bags of potatoes that are 'hit & miss' still available to sort through," Couch said.
