Fire Prevention Week, observed from October 6-12, highlights the critical role of smoke alarms in saving lives during home fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), having a working smoke alarm in the home can reduce the risk of death by more than 50%. Despite this, three out of five fire-related deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

To enhance safety, the NFPA offers the following recommendations:

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

Ensure alarms are accessible for all household members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

Test smoke alarms monthly to confirm they are functioning correctly.

Replace smoke alarms every 10 years to ensure reliability.

By following these tips, individuals can significantly improve home safety and reduce the risk of fire-related fatalities. Fire Prevention Week serves as a reminder to check and maintain smoke alarms regularly to prevent unnecessary tragedies.
